Freebird on The Great Loop
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 ต.ค. 2008
Freebird is a 2006 56 Carver Voyager and our home port is in Chattanooga, TN. We will be taking extended trips with the end goal to complete The Great Loop. We spent our first year cruising The Tennessee River and prepping for our first long range trip up to the tip of Michigan. We left April 1, 2022 and headed up the rivers to Michigan, spent the summer up there and then cruised back to Chattanooga arriving back 7 months later on November 1, 2022. In May of 2024 We started our second attempt leaving to do the loop backwards. Please Subscribe. Thank you!

New Sharkskin Bottom Paint for Freebird
@19:00 the sounds of the water hitting the boat would be very soothing to me If I owned a boat as beautiful as yours.
One of the best things about boating: Hearing the waves and water sounds.😄
This lady is cracking me up, in a good way. I live in Holland and have frequented Sagautuck's downtown especially the bars mostly on Independence Day weekends. What cracks me up is her critique of the subdivision, that is basically the way W. Michigan is. BIg houses on a few lots compared to more smaller homes on smaller lots. People around this area seem friendly but they definitely love their space to themselves and don't like alot of neighbors, if they can help it. Especially down near the water.
Glad I could give you a laugh. I came in the boat after that video and told Ed I probably wouldn't post this video! I was rambling on about stupid stuff. But then when I put them all together I thought, what the hell. 😁
Beautiful area, beautiful yacht!
We love cruising this area. Thanks for watching. 🛥
Land of the free? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You got it! 😁
Grt tour. I wld put this tour link in every video and mention it as peeps join these video series at diff times. Also because you take the videos you are never seen as you were in the boat tour. I wld put yr pho in a stand once per video so you are shown as well or have yr husband hold the pho once per video showing you. Viewers get connected to both of you in these long series but must see both. Also you schld put price of new Carver 56ft and used range to again give new prospect Viewers sense of boat cost and to fill 800 gal tank and how many days running a tank will last.
Thanks for the ideas. We will try to get some of these in our next videos. Not sure how to put a link or where to put a link to this video in future videos. Do you know how?
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Sorry I'm a computer basic guy. Just ask in yr videos, many have know how and glad to help. Found out Carver 56 are in $500,000 range dependant on chronic age and motor and boat real age. As you said, yrs was in storage fr yrs so boat is way younger than chronic age. $2800 to fill 800 gal tank of diesel est and maybe last you a month if drove it every day as a looper. Am I close? Have to put oars in it if I bought one!!!
@@billkramer2994 Our slow burning cruise is 6 gallons an hour at 9mph. Our fast cruise on plane, 24mph at 35 mph. Ours is in better shape and low hours. We have had offers over $550,000 but not ready to sell.
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop You might want to view Andromeda grt loop videos. This couple has ist class production from maps, music to showing both couples etc. As you know, life winners learn from anyone. I wld tell Androm guy, take off sunglasses when cam is in him. He wears some blue tinted reflective s/glasses that are hard to look at. His wife never has sg on. Viewers bond w others thru their eyes. Keep up the openness! Does yr boat have an 800 gal tank and about $2800 to fill it. And on the grt loop when yr running it daily, how many days bef a refill? I have attached my dream yacht to build -67 ft, Constellation. Grew up in Mich w C.Crafts!!
Sorry guess I can't attach a pic. You can Google it. Make sure it is pic in 50's w teak deck, only a few ever built, I have all the specs, just waiting fr my moolah. Forest Lawn may win out!! Bill
Only yr lead video do you see yr boat from some distance. You schld show a side view at the dock and also show pics of each room on boat when you bought it. Now all yr things are on board.
Keep watching...each video varies. We also did a video of a tour of our boat. Here is a link: th-cam.com/video/uOwwNO9RI68/w-d-xo.html
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop OK thnks must have missed it.
Also keep showing side of yr boat ea day. We're just seeing cockpit area.
Not sure what you mean. Please explain.
You need to show map and progress ea day.
That's an interesting idea. I will research how to do that in the future.
here in holland we have a app on the phone for ais ,only costs is 20 euro a year
That would be great. Do you still have to have an AIS system on your boat for it to work?
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop no its with the telefoon waterkaarten

I always loved Saugatuck. The Butler was a favorite lunch spot. My grandparents lived about 10 miles south of there. Beautiful place and always super nice people.
Thanks for comenting! Have a great day!
So.. question. Do all the marinas charge per foot? What is the average per foot cost? And this is per day?
Yes, as far as we know, they all charge per foot. The cost depends on the part of the country you are in. Florida and some of the East Coast are the most expensive. Michigan averages around $1.75 per foot. Tennessee River is about $1 a ft. We have heard $6-8 per ft in Florida and even more in New York City. And yes, this is per day. We try to anchor as much as possible to cut down on the costs.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop facts... I think I saw $64/ft but I think it was for the whole season. IL river.
@@nedflanders7352 Sound posssible.
How do you spell soddering?
I think it has a l in it. Soldering.
Looks great, Ed. The only thing I might have recommended is the use of some dialectic grease on the crimp junctions to help seal against a salt water environment. Gord
Thanks Gord! Good advice!
I have 2 Pro Mariner chargers for a bow and stern thruster. Each one is charging 2 AGM batteries hooked up for 24 volt. One charger I've had for 3 years now and the other 8 months. No problems at all. Easy to hook up and work as they should.
Glad to hear that they have lasted. The reviews I looked at were very positive. What boat do you have? Thanks for writing!
@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop I have a 46 Maxum which we have had for 10 years. Our previous boat was a 45 Carver aft cabin. Currently looking for a Carver like yours or a 57 Meridian. We boat in Puget Sound and up in BC Canada and have been up to Alaska twice.
@@steveprice4779 Wow! That must be great boating in that beautiful part of the country. We plan to be in Canada next year on the Great Lakes.
Been enjoying your video journal. I spent a lot of time on the upper Mississippi as a kid at my Grandparent's cabin across from Beaver Island around Fulton IL and Clinton IA. Lots of memories there. Loved watching the barges go by at night. Also the lock there fascinated me as a kid. I live in the Ozarks now so don't get to see the big river much anymore. I have seen you TN river it is really beautiful.
Thanks for writing! Sounds like you have had many wonderful experiences. Some of us are just drawn to the water and really appreciate being near the rivers and lakes. We loved Beaver Island!

Thanks for sharing the stops along the way. Its great to see what the harbors look like and what is in town.
Thank you for commenting! We started doing this so we could save our adventures to watch when we are old and sitting in our rocking chairs. It has been a pleasant suprise that so many people are following along and enjoying our videos!😀
FB, I enjoyed seeing this next visit after South Haven. Again, another really nice vacation port off of Lake Michigan. I was wondering how your Carver would do in the five foot swells. Without some real speed and a gyro, you will tend to rock and roll rather than lunge from swell to swell. That's why I like express cruisers and especially the Boston Whaler with their foam filled hull... no drumming on the waves... much quieter. But EC's just don't have the room like you have on a bigger yacht. Tight living quarters... but the speed and time saved on rough waters makes up for allot of sins... 😊 Gord
Hi Gord, We can get her up on a plane and get going if it gets rough and it makes it a much smoother and quick ride. Freebird can go up to 30 mph. But she drinks a lot of diesel so we don't do it that oftern.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Indeed, FB. Twin diesel inboards are thirsty critters. Filling up those enormous fuel tanks is definitely going to set you back a ways. Glad to hear that it smooths out on plane. Looking forward to seeing more of your destinations this past summer... on Lake Michigan and through the other lakes. Were you able to steer clear of Helene on your way around? West Coast Florida got smothered with sand and waves. Most of the construction on the Keys along the intercostal, from Ft. Meyers all the way up to the panhandle were smooshed out. You will need to plan accordingly. Gord
@@gorrdd Thanks for the warning. We have decided to not head down to Florida this winter due to the destruction and not wanting to take up marina space from those that are residents who need it. Stay tuned for future plans after the summer.
I look forward to their migration to my farm. They stay a few days each year. You would think they could an empty a pond of fish but I rarely see them hunting.
That sounds great! Where is your farm? What time of the year do they come?
In August we left Saugatuck to head back to St. Joseph and we were in 5’ with some 6’ waves in our Chris Craft 381. It was interesting that our camera did not pick up how big the waves truly were. That drive from the channel head to Singapore Yacht Club seemed to take about an hour at ideal speed.
We know what you mean! They are way bigger then the camera sees! Is your home port St. Joseph?
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoopyeah. We keep the boat at Pier 1000. We live just west of Ft. Wayne so it’s about an hour and forty minute drive each weekend. We bought the boat in Saugatuck though.
How has the paint held up?
We think it has held up very well. Just pulled the boat out last week and it has a couple areas that need touch up but we think it was from the slings distubing the paint. We had it done very early in 2022. But the boat has only been in fresh water.
When I got out of the Navy in 1981 I was hired off the Lockwall at L&D 18 on the Upper Mississippi near Burlington Iowa. Did a lot of trips on all Midwest inland waterways, best 9 years of my life. Boating was in my blood from a early age, my Father Bill Felt built Sea Star, Mach 1 and Envision Boats in Monmouth Illinois for 37 years. Great video and enjoy.
Thanks for your service. Ed's Dad was in the Navy and he always supported us in our boating adventures. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Gord! We are glad you are enjoying them. We had a great summer!
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop That sounds great. That was also a beautiful day, as Ed mentioned. It definitely sets the stage. My god, woman...if you're gonna film and narrate places you visit, do us all a favor and GOOGLE THOSE PLACES FIRST, so you can call all "these shops" at Bay Harbor what they are (The Village at Bay Harbor) etc. etc. Your videos are shaky and random; laughable lighting and ummm...how 'bout you spend like $20 of your riches on a muffled mic?? 🤣You are just soooo bad at this, lady, it's actually stupid amusing, but I guess I ve gotta give you at least a "C" for effort and a "A++" for the endorphin surge!! 🤣🤣 Just wondering what your hubby did for a living b4 you retired on a McYacht...🤔 I'm putting money on either retired GM Admin or other CEO/COO exec type. Maybe a Dr.? (They all seem to be retiring early these days 🙄.... ) Attorneys? meh... not so much; they seem to relish their game beyond retirement age, so probably your hubby isn't a lawyer. But maybe a retred judge, thouugh... there's a difference. See, I doubt you would be the girl in that picture on the McYacht! 🤣🤣. And so!! It was a great ride on the Freebird Plane crossing the lake that day! 🚤
How is the power usage on your current system, or do you only run it when connected to shore power?
I've heard it's about 8-10amps continuously when online.
Our Gen 3 power supply and router uses from 75-100 Watts of power. We mostly run when connected to shore power but have had no problem using it on generator power. If powered by an inverter, make sure you use a pure sign wave inverter.
I've noticed that the alignment really doesn't seem to matter too much, as long as there is open sky for the antenna. I've also noticed that when tied to the end of a covered dock, Starlink still works with almost half the sky obscured by the dock roof. There are outages, but they tend to be brief and things like youtube have a buffer that allows it to work well.
We have had the same experience. Even when it is not aligned we seem to get internet. I have notice the speed for uploads and downloads seems to be better when aligned. When anchored it seemed to work even with 120 degree swing, as long as the dish faces predominantly North.

You are lucky to have a house in South Haven. It is one of our favorite towns! I bet you love escaping all the hustle and bustle in Chicago for beautiful South Haven!
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Yes your correct watched some more of your videos very cool coming down the river to the lake
Thanks for documenting your trips. It's an education seeing first hand some of the things you encounter. What made it possible to pick up speed later in the day, given all the debris earlier? Do you get reports from upriver that let you know if it is clear? Are all those logs from trees blown down from storms and washed into the river? Thanks, Gord
Hi Gord! There were areas where the debris was lighter so we were able to pick up speed. No reports that I know of. The logs are all on the sides of the rivers and when the water level goes high it picks them up and they start floating. So in the spring when there is a lot of rain there are more logs. When the water goes down they settle back on the sides waiting for the next high water. Areas where there are a lot of barges, fleeting areas, the logs get caught on them and then released when they move. Those areas seem to have a lot more debris to get through.
@@FreebirdonTheGreatLoop Thanks FB... I finally figured out what was happening as I viewed more of your adventure days going forward. What this tells me is that following a rainy spring is not the time to go along the interior of the Great Loop. This is way too much work for any kind of semi-relaxing voyage. Plus the risk of expensive repairs to props and rudders. Not as entertaining as when you first started. But very educational... Gord
