@@johnhughes8828 I saw an interview with a Chicago band mate, who said Hendrix told him Kath was "better than me..let`s go on the road". I kinda believe it. He took the Moving Sidewalks, with Billy Gibbons, on the road too, and was heard complimenting him as well. This nonsense about "why don`t you ask blah blah" will never be seen in a video...until the AI version comes along, and he will be saying that about TinyTim.
@@martybrown358 Hendrix studied albums with Gibbons. He also called Rory the best. There was a list of old school Jazz/ Blues masters he admired. To be included in Hendrix list of greatest guitarists, tongue in check or not, meant you were doing something that he was interested in and wanted to spend time understanding. He didn't just say that "about everybody's favorite guitarist." Honestly I felt like that was throwing shade on Terry Kath's legacy and the work we saw in this video and in others. Until AI auto tunes Jimi's best work and claims it to now be better, Terry should be credited for the beast he was.
@@johnhughes8828 I wouldn`t say I`ve ever heard a better Guitarist than Terry Kath. Period. I never knew Hendrix...otherwise I might have had a few quotes to share. I have to admit, I was being sarcastic by saying "he said that about everybody`s favorite", cause he didn`t. People will claim he said that about Rory, Johnny Winter, Beck, Gibbons, etc. Since very few of us were there, we don`t have much to go by. Once again, I believe Terry Kath was as good as there ever was.
Back when bands just jammed, no big production. Just great musicians playing and supporting one another.
He was actually saying "Terry Kath" at the end not take care...I thought he said take care at first as well but after listening to this numerous times he is giving props to an amazing guitar player, RIP Terry Kath

Terry Kath was the hardest working guitarist I can think of..any style you want.
I saw them in concert in 72 and 73. The guy worked so hard I imagined seeing him at 40, with his fingers falling off and the roadie rushing out to screw them back his hands. 25 or 7 to 4 was about pulling an all nighter? Due to writer's block. Being so tired he couldn't focus on the clock dial. First 5 albums had the same personnel. After Terry died, the round Robin of band members started.
Mind you, this was just one song out of 90-minute concert.

Terry Kath was the soul of this band. Afterward, they stayed together and had great success. But it was really a completely different band without Terry. They lost there Rock edge and became more pop-ish. And I like that music... just saying Terry gave the band a deep soul.
Make Me Smile is another great song... Terry Kath (guitarist) is the lead singer. Soo many great songs. I prefer the older Chicago more. After Terry's death their sound changed, still good but not the same without him.RIP..Terry Kath!❤️
Hmmmm…. On THIS song the lead singer was Peter Cetera (bass player). Kath DOES sing lead on many songs (“I’m A Man” is one of my faves, like the only cover _Steve Winwood_ they did??) Robert Lamm sings lead too, on many songs ( “Beginnings” is great!).

The actual Chicago Transit Authority took exception to the use of the name after their first album came out. So the band chose to shorten it to Chicago and the rest is history.

Don't know if anyone else said it, but 25 or 6 to 4 is about being up in the middle of the night writing a song. 25 or 6 to 4 refers to 25 or 26 minutes to 4am.
Make Me Smile, Beginnings, way too many great Chicago songs to list. You can't go wrong with any of them. One of the greatest bands of all-time.
Yes, the band signed a contract to produce a new album by a certain deadline, and they only belatedly realized they hadn't left themselves much lead time to come with enough music for it. Bobby Lamm, the keyboardist, was up late one night, sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by sheet music, working on writing as many songs as possible, as fast as possible, taking inspiration wherever and however he could. At one point he looked up, quite bleary-eyed, to check the time and saw that it was 3:35, maybe 3:34, in the morning -- in other words, 25 or 26 to 4 --
and he said "Screw it, I need a title, that's it."
I like how at the end of the song, they say "25 or 6 to Far."

This song is about Terry doing coke all night and deciding if he want to do another line at 25 or 6 to 4 AM.
The saddest part is the day of Terry's death was the day he was set to go into the studio to record his first solo album. The world was robbed probably one of the greatest Blues Rock albums of all time.

They are one of the best groups of all time. We have seen them live six times. The Tanglewood concert was the best for watching live versions of the original seven members.

Terry Kath was absolutely amazing. Oh, and the guy with the "pipes", is none other than the legendary Peter Cetera. He had a great solo career after leaving Chicago. You'll definitely want to check out some of his stuff.
What I always love about that guitar solo is that at first, it's like yeah, that's pretty good. Then it gets better. And better. And BETTER. It just keeps building, and by the end, you're like, WTF? Beautifully constructed.

At end Pete Cetera says Terr Kath in a compliment to his guitar solo - he didn't say "take care" at the end. Your 1st listen won't be last and listen to other Chicago live tunes - Terry, Pete, the Brass Wall and Danny on drums were tight. I saw them at Ravania back in the day.

Alan Parsons Project is another band, like Chicago, that has a strong jazz influence, and relies heavily on keyboards. Check out "Eye in the Sky" and "Wouldn't Want to Be Like You" and "Games people Play". These are all-time classic rock tunes.
This version is very good for the solo and visual energy. The studio version is great for the sound and engineering. They're both good for different reasons.
It's a shame Peter Cetera's voice is so drowned out by the big orchestra in this live video. The audio quality wasn't the best back then. Salvo will see just how powerful his voice is in the studio version.
I used to use this song to demonstrate ipod speakers some years back. Just so perfectly constructed.
You should listen to their first song on their first album called 'Introduction', an amazing intro to this group and you'll love it.
And after that it is better to continue with the rest of that first side! It is his taste.

The entire concert from Tanglewood is incredible cant wait for you to react to my request for Im a man from the same concert. On this one the drummer will blow your mind. The song was written one early morning when they were struggling with writers block but needed to get new material written. The time was 25 or (twenty) 6 to 4 ( AM.)
Chicago toured and opened for Jimi Hendricks for awhile and Jimi was discussing doing an album together. He also considered Terry Kath a better musician than himself. Very high praise. Tragically they both died too young.

The guy with “Great Pipes “ is Peter Cetera, had a huge career solo after Chicago faded.
Honestly, this is one band that is just as good live as it is in the studio. I've seen them about four times now and have never been disappointed. Wish I had seen them when Terry Kath was around though, but I was much too young.

Kids thought the song title was about drugs back in the day, but they thought everything in a rock song was about drugs. It's actually about trying to stay awake and write a song as 4AM approaches (25 or 6 to 4). Terry Kath was obviously a beast on guitar and he had a very soulful singing voice.
They were a powerhouse in the early 70s, and I had a huge poster of them on my bedroom wall. There are three impeccable lead singers in this band, all with very different vocal timbres. Their harmonies took advantage of their difference, as shown here live. Terry Kath, the guitarist was an amazing live performer. His passing was a sad time. P.S. he didn't say 'take care', he say 'Terry Kath'.
Glad to see you've found this. Terry Kath was truly a force of nature with guitar in his hands, rock & roll lost a lot when we lost Terry. Fantastic recording of a fantastic song by a fantastic band. They started out as Chicago Transit Authority, but had to shorten it to Chicago when the actual Chicago Transit Authority threatened to sue them for trademark violation.
Funny. I always assumed that it was a song about an acid (lsd) trip, but I read an interview with Peter C a few years ago, where he said it was a song about being up all night trying to write music. The clock on the wall, which was seen through his fatigue weary eyes, said either 25 to 4 or 26 to 4, so; 25 or 6 to 4

Just an absolutely great solo. The studio version of this song is also great, but that solo is one of the greatest you'll ever see. Go for Beginnings next.

Great recommendation and I too would suggest this live version. The entire band was stellar, but this really showcases Terry Kath, one of the best guitarists ever, RIP and one of the best guitar solos ever. Funnily, this song is about trying to write a song and being up all night trying to get it done. It turned out to be one of the top Chicago songs of all time.
This is a rare example where the live version is mandatory. Most times live doesn't reflect the studio intent. But this in particular far eclipses the studio version.

YEAH! Chicago - loved their earlier songs. React to "Color My World", "Feeling Stronger Every Day", "I've Been Searching So Long", "I'm A Man", "Dialogue 67 & 68". Peter Cetera & Terry Kath were the lead vocals and after Terry Kath passed, his voice and guitar definitely was missed. The horns add a totally different level and creates their own sound. Never saw this video, glad I did now. I always love the studio version that you were used to hearing on the radio, but I would've loved to have seen this in person.
Peter Cetera has such an amazing voice. He started there and carried it forever into his own single career which you'll have to check out next

Oh my - CHICAGO!! They have MAJOR talent. Any song you check out is a winner. I wouldn't even know where to start - you should listen to the studio version of 25 or 6 to 4 as well! Horns up the wazuu! And that guitar solo... You will absolutely fall in love with this band!!
An all time favorite song, performance, and guitar solo that I have loved since 1970! I am a HUGE Terry Kath fan! Terry also has an amazing, unexpected voice! Listen to "Wishing You Were Here" or "Colour My World" to enjoy that voice! Every member is amazing at what they do! Robert Lamm plays keyboards and also sings. Listen to "Saturday in the Park" or "Does Anybody Know What Time it is". The singer here, has an amazing voice, as well, because he is Peter Cetera!! Here he was healing from a broken jaw, so has some challenges and still sounds amazing. Danny Sarafine is such a soulful and heartfelt drummer! Watch the video for "I'm a Man" back at the Beat Club to see more of his individual talent! The horn section, Lee, Walt and Jimmy are so great! They still play together, with Robert Lamm. Terry's life was curly short by an accidental, self inflicted gunshot to the head. Awful and so sad!! 25 or 6 to 4 signifies a time of day. Robert wrote this song while trying to write a song deep into the night and early morning. "Should I try to do some more, 25 or 6 to 4". Interesting stories with this band, which would never be the same after Terry's passing in 1978. 💕

"Make Me Smile" is the first part of "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" but was edited with Terry's solo shortened for single release. The suite which also contains "Make me Smile" is one of Chicago's finest accomplishments but those are the only parts on radio and predictable greatest hits sets.
I grew up hearing these songs - my favorite as a kid by far was Saturday in the Park because it just had so much description of what, as a kid, was a perfect day.
I saw Chicago 3 times back in the 70s when I was a high school kid and Terry Kath was still alive. They didn't rely on crazy effects or pyro - just good music. The guitar work from Terry really drove the band's sound in those days. I would also recommend "Introduction" from their first album called 'Chicago Transit Authority'. It was written by Terry Kath, features him on lead vocal, and kind of lets the individual members of the band show their stuff.
They are a completely different band after Terry passed away. I love the music when Terry was in the band much more than after however I have to say the music after is fantastic and I've seen them live four times I've been truly blessed

I was a trumpet player in high school and played in the marching & stage bands and whenever the school had plays etc. I and a bunch of my friends from the horn section saw Chicago in 72-73 a few times. They were our musical heroes.
After graduation, I always saw the band when they were in a 50-mile radius. Seeing Terry play was literally mind bending. When he passed, I was literally in shock and sadly, the band never sounded right after that. He literally was their heart and soul. So yes, I do feel blessed and I'm glad his playing is recorded.@@daveking9393
When this came out, our HS Band used to play it every Friday Night at the Football Game. It was perfect for fall nights and football.... and it was fantastic.

You just witnessed the great Terry Kath on guitar, imo the heart and soul of Chicago--you have to also hear some of the Chicago songs that he sang lead on...he has a great soulful deep voice.
Chicago's 1st album is still the best of ALL. I was in Viet Nam when this concert happened, but I did get to see them back in 68' at the Oak Dale theater in the round in Wallingford, CT. and I did get to see the Moody Blues, James Taylor and the Boston Pops at Tanglewood and it is by far the best place to ever hear a band.

The great Terry Kath! These guys still put on one of the greatest live shows. Still some original members. I’ve seen them perform at least a dozen times… tours with Earth, Wind & Fire, Doobie Brothers, Beach Boys, etc. Terry Kath had a lot of grit in his voice. Bought their first album whilst I was still at school. Terry Kath was a fantastic guitarist. When Jimi Hendrix was asked who he thought was the best guitarist in the world? He answered Terry Kath.

Apparently he said that about Winter, Gallagher, Gibbons and a bunch of others...quite the fickle one that Hendrix...of course I have no horse in this race, so maybe Kath was better. I do believe he told this to a couple of Kath`s band mates though...but you will never see this in an interview about anybody..
This is the best thing they did and it’s the best performance I know of it and probably one of the best 20 live recorded performance videos in rock history. That solo was absurd but that was Terry. True legend.
Danny Seraphine was always a beast on the drums; "Make Me Smile" is a good showcase for his work.

Their early stuff with Terry Kath is uniformly stunning. After he passed away, they slowly devolved into a sappy easy-listening/soft rock style and sold a TON of records. Check where they rank in records sold for the '70s, '80s and all-time. They used to open for Jimi Hendrix and he supposedly said that their guitarist (Kath) was better than he (Hendrix) was.
Terry the denim god just blew your mind little human .. and his horn section took your soul! Dude one of the best live performances of all time.. the whole Live at Tanglewood is amazing. Also check out .. the same year .. Black Sabbath Live in Paris .. another amazing live .. also both the sound quality is amazing for the day!
I think the first listen to any song for your reaction, should always be the studio version. Just like all of us had our first reaction to. We didn't have the option of going onto youtube and looking up a concert. just listen to the studio version first, and if you like it, check out live versions.

25 or 6 to 4 means 25 or 26 minutes to 4am. They had to write a song and the deadline was the next day so the lead singer stayed up all night writing this song about his experience 😂
Truly my favorite band when I was in school. Way too many great songs and this is the stellar "live" performance. Terry Kath so unbelievably amazing in the solo...he was truly one of the greats in guitar, but he left this life too soon. The whole band again so good and so distinctive in their sound. You're gonna have to dive into their music and so many have already been recommended already. "Saturday In The Park, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, Make Me Smile, Color My World, Another Rainy Day In New York City, and What's This World Coming Too" are some awesome listening to start with. Enjoy and can't wait to see your reactions.
Grew up about 15 minutes from Tanglewood and I have sat under the stars on many a summer night taking in great performances. Such a great venue. They no longer have a ton of popular artists and it is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. James Taylor lives nearby and has performed there many times.
One of my favorite love ballads is If You Leave Now from Chicago. You might like it.
He said "Terry Kath" at the end. Jimi Hendrix himself considered him the best guitar player of their generation. The two things I love about this performance is the guitar solo (of course) and the fact that they're setting up the drum kit as the song starts.
Terry's daughter have made a documentary about him.
For me it's like their first record Chicago Transit Authority is Terry Kath's band and there was much good guitar playing on that one. From the second one he didn't have much space for guitar playing as on the first one.

First concert I ever went to - my Dad took me and my older brother, we were young pre-teens in Houston, Texas, circa 1974. Even as a kid I knew they were special. I think that their first song called "Introduction" from their very first album offers a great insight into their sound from their first 7 or 8 years. Reallllly enjoyable.

Chicago redefined what rock music can be. Their sound was revolutionary and evolved over the decades as they produced hit after hit until the late 80s. Early Chicago featured the voices of not only Peter Cetera (who aslo played a mean bass), but the incredible, late Terry Kath (incredible guitarist) who, sadly, passed away in '78. After Kath's passing the band changed but kept the amazing horn parts and cranked out many more amazing hits. So glad to see you test the waters that are Chicago. I must recommend Leonid & Friends. They are a Chicago cover band currently on a US tour. They are a Russian/Ukrainian group that covers Chicago plus E, W, & F in addition to B, S, & T. They have many videos here on YT. I have been following them for the last 5 or 6 years. I have done side-by-side comparisons of each song they cover & have found only minor differences to the original bands (mostly the English as a second language bit). The musicianship is just as masterful from guitar to vocals, to drums, & horns, too.
The studio version is the one I grew up listening to and it's one of my top 5 favorite rock songs of all time. I never get tired of listening to Terry's guitar solo.
Terry was one of the best ever! Such a sad ending, as he forgot about the one in the chamber when he stuck that gun to his head. Always remember, there is no such thing as an unloaded gun.
The guitar solo in the studio version isnt as long, but it has some guitar licks in between lyrics that this one lacks. It's equally awesome.
Having just come off of your Against All Odds reaction, the studio/radio cut of this song is great, a masterpiece. But this live version is a step beyond. You started in the right place.

I was born in 63, and you just discovered one of the best bands from the 70's. Must listen to their Greatest Hits album. So many great rock bands from the 60's and 70's to checkout. Since TH-cam was aired there has been such an explosion of music history to seek out and also discover for those of you that were born in the 80's and thereafter. It's been a blast finding some of the forgotten songs that I grew up listening to. Thanks TH-cam!
Still have several of my original Chicago albums & they get frequent rotation. They have such a variety of songs styles ….but you can always recognize their unique sound. The 70’s were a great time musically!

In my life, I've had two favorite guitarists. I've heard hundreds of amazing guitarists, and I cannot deny they're all great. But two have stuck out to me as the ones who spoke to me over all other ones. The first, and undisputed champion, is Duane Allman. The second is Terry Kath of Chicago. Kath played his guitar like an orchestra all in one. Such a f*cked up way the world lost him, RIP, man. If there are guitar lessons in Heaven, I'm signing up for his class.

Great band in all iterations. The studio wanted them to K.O. the brass section in the early 80s when disco backlash started, but the band refused. They went on to have a new run of hits WITH their brass section, proving that businessmen should never have a say in artistic decisions. Ever.
