He was also my dad’s roommate in college. They hadn’t spoken in years, but a couple years ago my mom and dad went to a concert of his and dad talked to a security person and dropped his name. After talking to Mickey, the security guy brought them backstage and the two of them had some laughs and reminisced. Mom and Dad said Mickey can still hit all the high notes at 70

In the early '90s I cooked at a bar & grill in Walnut Creek, CA and Mickey Thomas came to perform as he was reforming Starship with local guys that regularly played the bar. I was in the kitchen when Mickey was warming up without a mic and he sounded as loud as every other singer amplified. Some months later the band invited me to a Christmas party at the guitarists apartment and got to hear Mickey sing in a living room.

So Grace Slick was battling the bottle and eventually the bottle won. At a show in Germany in 1978, she basically embarrassed herself and got pulled from the tour.
Then, when the tour finished, co-lead singer Marty Balin decided he'd had enough crap and quit.
Then, drummer John Barbata (formerly of the Turtles and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) got into a horrific car wreck, needed 2 years to rehab, and ultimately retired. So the band needed to reconfigure.
Luckily, Aynsley Dunbar had just quit as the drummer for Journey and was glad to trade up the San Francisco band pyramid (Journey were only starting to get hot), so that was one problem solved. And Elvin Bishop had let backing singer Mickey Thomas take the lead on one song ("Fooled Around and Fell in Love") and now people knew what Mickey could do, so he took Balin's spot.
And keyboard player David Freiberg (not usually a key songwriter) had a real good song in him, and guitarist Craig Chaquico came up with a really awesome solo, and a classic was born.
Slick eventually comes back, Balin doesn't. The rest of this album kicks, too.
David Freiberg got his start with a different SF band, Quicksilver Messenger Service. If you haven't heard QMS doing "What About Me?" from 1970, stop what you're doing and put it on NOW.
    I said *NOW!!!* You're welcome.
(And thanks for the gold star. It's International Cat Day and I was looking to get my boy Ziggy a present.)

Craig Chaquico is on blazing guitar, I saw him in the Jefferson Starship and he was an amazing player, with endless runs at times that kept morphing into similar but not the same segments, they played 3 hours that night including the entire Blows Against the Empire album. Those guys plus Grace Slick still had it in the 70s, before she was overcome by her alcoholism and was fired by the band. She was magnificent when I saw them, both with Jefferson Starship and the Jefferson Airplane (she did chilling versions of While Rabbit both times, I can still see her piercing eyes as she belted out that unreal tune).
Nice song in Jane, always loved it and Mickey Thomas sure was great as the new singer. More of all of the above and also how about some Hot Tuna some time? The other spinoff from the Jefferson Airplane with Jorma Kakonen on guitar and Jack Cassidy on bass, those guys could jam with the best of them, I saw them back then and they played for 4 hours with a 45 minute Walking Blues as the encore included. Try Hit Single #1 from them, it is a banger! Enjoy. 👍👍

Terrific musicianship and lyrical composition during that time (70's). "Jane" is definitely the best banger from the 80's era of Jefferson Starship (IMO). About fifteen years ago, I was at Epcot with my then-girlfriend (now-wife) when "Starship featuring Mickey Thomas" was performing there. She was unfamiliar with the band, so I named several songs from Airplane/Starship. As we got closer to the concert area, we could hear this song playing, but we were too far away to make out lyrics, and although it sounded familiar, I just couldn't remember what it was called. The song ended before we arrived. Later, it was bugging me that I couldn't think of the name, so I looked up their hits, and was reminded of "Jane." I then felt pretty dumb telling my girlfriend, Jane, that I had been unable to identify this song.

The arrangement and production, first rate. When it goes to the reggae break, great choice. It's a remembering of the good times, so take it down, and while you're at it, why not go reggae? Then out of the break with that vocal scream to "ugh" into a killer solo. Then you get out of the solo, following the vocals up and back into the verse. When this band was on, it was on. A couple of points of note, Craig Chaquico is a killer guitar player, and btw, the drummer was Aynsley Dunbar, who played for almost everyone back in the day: Zappa, Beck, Bowie, Keith Emerson, on and on.

The whole "Freedom At Point Zero" album is fantastic. Jeffereson Starship re-invented themselves with this album as more of an arena rock act and it worked beautifully. Micky Thomas was (and still is) a fantastic vocalist. Today he leads the band Starship which evolved from Jefferson Starship and before that Jefferson Airplane.

Some friends and I saw Starship at a “free concert” at the LA Sports Arena. Don’t get me wrong this and the rest of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship hits they played were great, no complaints. The problem was some studio needed crowd shots for a Rick Springfield video or tv special or some shit, so we were in the crowd shots and got to hear Jessie’s Girl about a thousand times before Starship came out. Nothing is free gentlemen. Nothing.
