Everyone dislikes when their favorite diet is deemed “hard” 🙄
If the average person who tries it considers it too restricted, emotional depriving and not sustainable long term they aren’t gonna shy away from that fact and not call it hard just because some people find it easy. It’s easy to find people saying low fat + low protein fruitarian-vegan diets are the most “incredibly easy” diet they’ve ever done. There one anecdote doesn’t change it’s a hard diet overall

Lol we never know, it just might be. Whilst research has figured out a lot of the correlations, nothing yet concrete that identifies the cause. But I still think it’s pretty cool that we’re able to provide treatments to people with autoimmune conditions, even if we still don’t fully comprehend the cause. Like most disorders, it follows the genes plus environment equation and as it currently stands,it looks like we’ll figure it out if we can solve the semi-complete and very much oversimplified equation of: genes (most likely the X chromosome interaction with hormones that are comparatively lower in post-pubescent males) + unknown environmental trigger (that appears to be geographically bound)

@Lunar Type 1 diabetes is any situation where the pancreas isn't working. While the most common reason for this is just unknown birth defects, there are a lot of ways to damage your pancreas, like car accidents and alcohol abuse. Low carb diets are great for people who have a damaged pancreas, because they are less reliant on artificial insulin.

Not sure if this will be in the video, but intermittent fasting is based on the same idea of keto-diet but on a cyclical level. After 14h of fasting your body enters ketosis but you only spend 2 to 4h in this state before you end your fasting. This keeps your body more in balance because you still consume every food group but still go into ketosis

I've been on keto for a few years now. My goal was just to find whether works for me that I could actually sustain for a lifetime; I don't see the point in temporary diets. While it can be hard to find substitutes for some things, I almost find it easier on my mind when cooking, as there's usually fewer ingredients to work with.
We definitely need more long-term health data though, looking forward to it in the upcoming years.

You guys pointed out the biggest and most surprising benefit I found; reduced appetite and cravings. One day as lunch time approached I found I just wasn't hungry. It was the dietary change that allowed me to lose a bunch of weight without ever feeling starved or even hungry. It was a miracle. Eventually I noticed I was eating a bunch of processed "keto" foods and as you mentioned, it is difficult to manage carb intake. So I switched to a mostly Carnivore diet to make the food choice easier. And as I don't have cravings anymore, the dietary limitations aren't an issue. I don't want to go back to the SAD diet and have food control me. So I stay on the diet and find I feel better when on it.

What helps me to feel full is a meal full of fiber, for example, nowadays I'm loving to eat whole wheat pasta with textured vegetable protein and some meat, this way I have a ton of protein(around 50 g) and fibers (~15 g) and the calories aren't that bad either (around 500 kcal)

BTW, thank you for a very balanced look at the diet. My only pushback would be your comment about "As we all know" Calories In Calories Out. However this is far more complicated in our bodies than that as our bodies are controlled by hormones and different foods trigger those hormones differently. Also, you mention needing to make sure to get fiber and a variety of plants. Even this is up for debate lately as It looks like you can get all the nutrients your body needs from meat due to the higher bioavailability. I'm still unsure about fiber as it sounds like our bodies can't use it anyway.

    • @StevenKephart

@@FutureProofHealth If there's one thing I've learned from watching all these nutrition TH-cam videos is how massively complicated our bodies are and how little we understand about the systems it runs on. And a lot of the research we have is greatly influenced by corporate lobbyists as well as bias from personal ideologies making it even harder to know the truth. That and the limits due to ethics of running effective nutrition studies. Even personal anecdotes can be flawed as well all want to believe we are doing the right thing for our health. I think the one truth we can all agree on in nutrition science which you mention in the video is that processed foods are harming us and should be avoided or at least limited for optimal health.

    • @lunar686

Calories in vs calories out will always be an exceptionally true, yet exceptionally nuanced statement. Unfortunately, unless you have the same genetics and environmental factors as another person, you won’t get the same outcomes, oh and also feel the same way about them, as even our emotions also influence outcomes lol. And from what I know regarding the research on the bioavailability of meat products, I would also add that iron deficiency is also a concern for those that exclude meat from their diet as the type of iron we need cannot be supplemented

I've been low carb for 5 mts and I can believe how much better I feel, I could go on about everything it fixed for me but I wanted to write in case this helps someone: it depends on who you listen , there's keto people that are obsessed with stats and borderline carnivore diet and there's the people like me . Who don't count a thing. If one or 2 people are too strict or loose for you keep looking for your tribe. I started it for health reasons and weight loss was a bonus, I was a fries a holic I don't miss any of it, not sweet not potatoes not bread. I miss the convenience of them, I didn't have to think ahead then I do now. When you think on it most bread rice potatoes are very blend tasting ,what taste good is what you put on it ,once you find a new vessel for the flavors, it's pretty good and easy. You don't have to go keto but cutting sugars and carbs will make a huge difference in your well-being.

  • @anonymouse6703
    @anonymouse6703 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I don't generally subscribe to diets, especially if they cut out a whole food group. However, I've been trying Keto for a month and it's given me a great structure to start eating healthy and whole foods. I worked my way up to eating 10 cups of salad every day and that's where I get my carbs, although I don't put it toward my Keto carb count. It makes me so full that I can barely finish 7 ounces of protein. Never in my life have I felt so satiated, it pulled me out of brain fog and gave me my energy back. I will do this until I reach my goal weight and then transition back to allowing myself more of a variety, but this time I'll have the discipline to do it right without overdoing it. I love the Keto diet, it totally works for me but you have to do it right, with grass fed beef products and organic pasture raised chicken coupled with lots of vegetables to help carry the fat out of the liver.

A couple other comments touched on this, but the reason you lose weight on keto, isn't due to calories in/calories out, it's due to the lack of insulin, as insulin blocks fat burning, and with minimal carbs, your insulin is lowered and you can now burn fat easier. Also, FAT is not bad for you, it's the sugar, processed foods and seed oils. I personally thrive on a carnivore diet, but I do know that everyone is different.

People often don’t crave salt, sugar or fat on its own. However the combination of the three into a singular item increases addiction and consumption, and is kinda the combination almost all processed foods contain. Removing even just one component reduces the insulin production, cravings, and allows people to eat more mindfully

Great video. I lost a bunch of weight when I first tried keto in 2017. When I had to take care of my mom, my keto cooking got her completely off insulin (type II diabetes, I think). Then she got sick and I couldn’t shop and cook the way keto required at the time so I gained the weight back and more. What I like about it is that I eat way more produce, way less processed foods and sugars, and the food tastes better and is more satisfying. But I now find it harder to continue and I’m not losing weight the same way. Also, get blood tests done. My cholesterol is not great. There are explanations out there so it’s not necessarily a cause for concern, but you should be aware. I was disappointed my A1c wasn’t better.

There are both healthy versions of keto or low carb diet, and unhealthy versions of keto diet. If people doing healthy versions of keto diet, eating healthy, exercise, and managing stress, there are huge health benefits, losing weight is just side effect compared to other health benefits. The purpose should be a permanent lifestyle change, or not just for lose few kilos weight for a few weeks. Most people doing it wrong and starved themselves, replaced carb with other junk that don’t contain any nutrients, and not change their unhealthy lifestyle, then it’s bound to failing.

Btw the ketons-brain link is fairly straightforward. Your brain uses primarily ketons as energy source, where the rest of your body is optimised for glucose-use. When your entire body runs on ketons you always have excess ketons for your brain

Keto is honestly not a hard to diet to do. There is loads of variety you can add to dishes without dipping into carbohydrates.
As long as you don’t eat bread, rice, pasta, sugar, potatoes, or consume alcohol then you’re practically there already.
Today I’ve eaten: walnuts, peanuts, asparagus, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, smoked basa fish, blue cheese, and emmental cheese. I have drank tea with soya milk, black coffee, and cacao powder.
It sounds like a lot but it’s honestly a breakfast snack, and a dinner.
Within a few days your cravings for sugar dies down and eventually you gain an understanding that our modern food culture is basically profit driven nightmare that doesn’t give a damn about you.
If you are interested in the diet without intending it to be a long term lifestyle change, then you should see it as a handbrake manoeuvre into getting more in touch with natural foods, home cooking, and learning about nutrition.
On top of that, it does wonders for focus. It has linked benefits for many neurological conditions as mentioned in the video.
Don’t knock this diet till you try it.
I’ve done it several times over the years, lost 14 kilos overall, and genuinely believe it has helped my mental health like nothing else could.

Hey Sher - great video. I've had T2 diabetes for about 15 years now and it has always been under control with 2022 getting told I was in remission. Until... phone call from my specialist to say my latest HBAC1 was massively increased this year so... well, its been chicken, nuts and berries for the last month and seriously, watching and reading about this diet and "that" diet is doing my head in lol. I've already gone back to my great love of a homemade curry and rice once a week. I love cod and haddock but in breadcrumbs (argh carbs again lol). This video is the most concise and common sense/balanced evaluation of the diet craziness and the $$$ behind it. I'm going to organise a meet up with the nutrionalist at my doctors and discuss a good plan for a balanced diet. I'm so lazy that I have spent most my life surviving on "easy" meals I can make (no chef here lol) so it's chilli, curry, bolognese or ready meals and of course the most important food in the world - Pizza haha. However, IN the last 2 years I have lost 4 stone in weight and am now only 3 stone from my ideal weight. This made the HBAC1 result all the more depressing but I suspect - and have talked it through with my doctor - that an ongoing UTI problem for the last 4 months may well be upsetting my blood glucose levels as my diet hasn't changed for over a decade. However I am now in my late 50s (male) so maybe my body is just - sigh - slowing down? And yet, I have lost significant weight for the first time in 20 years so go figure (PS: no i don't have a meth habit :) ). All very puzzliing but, if people should take ONE message from your video, it should be that there is ZERO "one size fits all" solution to your own personal diet. You have to get good advice, ignore the paid influencers and marketing and trust your own sense of what you body needs in conjunction with your health care providers support. As a result my HBAC1 glucose has halved and is almost back to normal T2 manageable levels and I hope to reverse it further in 2024. Sorry for long post, but your video really got me thinking and supported a lot of my own thoughts and research. Please make more of these Sher - you're a great presenter and I really enjoyed this informative video 👍👍👍👍

I've tried multiple diets and have always been able to eat whatever I wanted when I was younger without any weight gain or health affects. Now that I'm older and getting in my 30's. I've found myself gaining weight, having health concerns which have put me in the hospital multiple times. Once I started to get all my health problems I started to do more research into what I was putting into my body and started to change my diet around trying different diets. I found the best results on the Carnivore Diet with the occasional fruit as a candy or sugar replacement. I've even noticed a big difference between getting my meat from the grocery store or Costco compared from the local butcher. I can say will out a doubt my health is 100% better if I stick to the Carnivore Diet and get my meat from the local butcher. I worked in healthcare for a decade until my health got so bad I was having stroke and seizure symptoms at work and getting sent to the hospital monthly if not bi-weekly. The hospital would run tests but couldn't figure out what was wrong and actually got made at me for getting sent to the hospital. I understand why they got made as every time I was sent to the hospital I was getting MRI's, CAT scans, and more tests. They were getting made because of the amount of radiation I was putting into my body with all the tests. After going on the Carnivore Diet I haven't had a stroke or seizure or any real health concern that sent me to the hospital from work. I was also diagnosed with other mental health issues which made me unsafe at work taking care of others. My doctor is trying to get me on Persons With Disability and doesn't agree with me being on the Carnivore Diet but my body and mind agrees and saying it's like night and day doesn't really explain it in the right words but it's the easiest way to put it. I of course don't recommend anyone to just go Carnivore but I do recommend people do an elimination diet and start cutting things out like sugar and oils like vegetable, canola, maybe cut carbs as that usually gives the body inflammation which can cause some people a lot of pain. Everyone is different though and the best diet for anyone is the one your body and mind functions on best. It just so happens that mine is the Carnivore Diet.

Personally I think the 'ketosis' or w/e part of keto is all nonsense. And this is from someone who lost about 15kg while doing keto for about half a year. It's all down to your other point - it's increadably hard to overeat when there's no carbs. Eating the same calories equivalent of non-carbs is a significant more time, effort, and very importantly, money intensive endeavour. As for keeping it off, no diets ever going to do anything long term, so really all diets are a fad preying on people's insecurities (which is your closing remarks). Only way is to change your lifestyle.

While each diet option has it's quirks, it seems to me that most diets have the same general things in common: less proccessed food, less sugar, more whole veggies and fruits, more quality protein. I would add leaner meats too but keto and vegan obviously don't support this for specific reasons. Still, given these common denominators, it seems to me the key to healthy eating isn't fad dieting, but just eating better things. Even if you are on a specific diet for whatever reason you need to be sure to eat a good variety of natural foods to avoid malnutrition. I appteciate the commentary on diets making you more intentional about food as that seems like the best outcome overall

You don't need a Keto Diet to get into Ketosis. As long as you're fasting majority of the time with a good protein to carb ratio. Ie: 20-22 hours of Fasting + 2 Hours of Eating. Still ate over 100g of Carbs and met my proteins to maintain my muscles.
Lost 9 Lbs in 7 ish Days. Not Water Weight and I have not gained it back yet. When I'm back on my normal caloric intake. You can speed this up by exercising on an empty stomach. Which including taking all your medications or stimulants prior to your exercise. Exercise will speed up your body into ketosis. Since if your body has nothing in the stomach = It has to rely on the fat in your body to burn = Pushing you into ketosis.
However, you need to replenish your electrolytes and such because you are not eating meal every couple of hours. When you start to feel hungry, you drink some water with sodium. Ie. Electrolytes to push down Ghrelin = Making you less hungry = Makes the body rely on fat and sodium to elevate blood sugar levels :).
People are talking about the Diabetes Magical Pen, Ie: Ozempic. Eat Whatever and Lose Weight but they are not replenishing with Electrolytes = Kidney Disease. Since you need Magnesium and Potassium to clear Gallstones and Kidney Stones.

Less sugar, less junk food, more veggies - that seems reasonable, right? :) I've been vegetarian for over 10 years, and mostly vegan for around 4 years, and all this time my weight stayed pretty much the same, and my skin got better, because turns out that dairy products and sweets can trigger skin to produce pimples and redness. I try to limit highly processed foods, because it's logical that the more processed something is the less actual nutrients it has. I lived through 90's skin&bones trends, my stomach was never 100% flat, but I learnt that girls actually naturally have more fat percentage than men and that's normal, and whatever your body looks like the best you can do is to accept that everyone is different, and we don't need to all look the same (that would be so boring anyway), and body trends and beauty myths are BS, they come and go, and change all the time, and it's really not worth it to starve yourself to achieve some unatteinable perfection of an appearance.

I've been doing Keto for 6 months and it is fantastic. I've lost 15 pounds, feel full, and have lots of energy and mental focus. I eat lots of organic vegetables, grass fed dairy and meats. Eliminating added sugar is the best thing to maintain good insulin levels and keeps you from becoming diabetic. Don't knock it until you try it.

Yeah, I’ve lost 13lbs over the past 6 months but its because I cut out snacking rather than a particular diet. I really think that just being more conscious about what you eat really helps. Glad keto is helping you on your weight loss journey 👍

@@latristessdurera8763 Yes! The Keto diet virtually eliminates the need for snacking constantly.

Great video! Nutrition is very complex. Keto works for me, the tricky balance is cycling in and out of ketosis and not just pummeling your system nonstop and reaching a healthy balance afterwards. Cheers!

I feel the Keto diet exists purely as a side hustle for chiropractors 😂

In a world where heart disease is the #1 killer, a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol (like keto) is incredibly irresponsible

    • @kaypattersonvlogs
      @kaypattersonvlogs 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Healthy saturated fat from whole food sources (butter, coconut oil, avocado) in moderation and dietary cholesterol are not necessarily the bad guys and the links to cardiovascular disease are WEAK at best. But a lot of us still believe this. In 2015 the American heart association reversed their view on dietary cholesterol but no one talked about it 😂

Another health video that doesn't say anything new.
My God, it's not complicated, there is no debated.
    At least do literature review.
If you want to know what's up by people that know the science and research, look up diet doctor, Dr Jason Fung or Dr Pradip Jamnadas.

Not a good diet for someone that has since childhood despised meat….like eating shoe leather which in another form it is indeed. Diet trends aside I’ve always been a fruit and veggies person. I don’t think of a time growing up that I didn’t drown whatever slab of meat served to me was not drowned in ketchup or bbq sauce, I was always slurping up the broccoli and cheese tho😊 btw late stage baby boomer born 1958
