My father put me on the Keto diet about a year after I was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 8. My seizures went down and I always had energy. I am now in late 57 and consider myself thin and healthy. I rarely get sick and the diet has been a lifestyle most of my life.
Just because it works for you doesn't mean it works of everyone else. Also you may be linking the diet to less seizures by collation of the two. For example as I get older the population of mexico increases, these doesn't mean that my age or the amount of people in mexico are related in anyway, they are coincidentally connected. You(or anyone else on a keto diet) may have improved due to medication, exercise , or any other factor. Not trying to attack you just pointing out you're improvement may not be due to you're diet change.
That doesn't mean that the change in diet was the cause for your betterment, this sort of stuff needs years of study and thousands of people to be studied to reach any meaningful conclusion.
@@eddlake5694 This is true but it seems to me that it worked for me. To me that's all that counts. Besides I love being able to be on a mostly meat diet. If it is a coincidence it's a pretty convenient one.
edd lake A ketogenic diet for epilepsy has been used in medical practice for many years and is utilized by many respected institutions like Johns Hopkins since the twenties. There have been studies supporting its efficacy(I haven’t personally read them). But the use of a Keto diet to treat epilepsy should always be done under the advisement of a doctor or nutritionist. All of this was mentioned in the video in detail if you watched it.
yes. at leat for me, it is the only diet that does indeed bring down my weight very quickly and without rebound, and it also helps with my neurodegenerative disease, cures my gastritis my bloating and my stomachaches as well as bringing down the itching in my skin.
I think I agree more with "not one diet is for everyone". He did mention a concrete example, people who want the athletic performance where they use a lot of force/speed at a short time should not be on the diet as it reduces it. And there are probably some people who actually are better of (or equally good) healthwise on other types of diets, a lot of factors play in
Way to mischaracterize the criticisms. Nobody or at least no majority are arguing that keto is right for everyone, we're calling out the video for radically egregiously misrepresenting it. Nuance is hard, I know, but the truth resists simplicity
Meanwhile the Inuit today suffer alarming rates of obesity since being forced to settle in villages where they are dependent on imported packaged food.
Concrete proof about how carb destroy your body edit: by "carbs" i meant "digestable carbs" which is every kind of carbs that human can turn into glucose, cellulose which is indigestable, can be considered "harmless" since we can't digest them.

As a veterinary student who recently was diagnosed with severe insulin resistance (although not yet progressing to Type II diabetes), thanks for this informative video! It’s really ridiculous how little science there is about our own nutritional needs, but alas, there are many barriers to ethical experimentation in this field. Six months after starting a ketogenic diet with the help of my endocrinologist and nutritionist, my insulin seems to finally be under control (and I lost 30 pounds). Here’s hoping that my body continues to respond well to this metabolic areangement, and for more long term studies going forward!

Something i wanted to add. It's almost impossible to do keto without cutting out ready meals and a lot of junk food. You are forced to read every label and it is shockingly difficult to avoid sugar.
Only snack you can eat is basically puffed pork rinds. No carbs, just protein and fat. Everything else is basically carb based (corn, wheat, potato, starchy vegetables)
Lol if cutting out junk food is a deal-breaker then it's hard to believe you take your nutritional health seriously. I do sympathise with your second sentence though as almost all foods contain a lot of sugar nowadays, even relatively healthy things like vegetables, fruits, dairy and most cereal.
@@TheRABIDdude I don't think anyone is arguing it's a deal breaker, just that part of the benefit of keto may be simply cutting out those type of snacks and not something inherit about the diet
David Treder I think the tone of OP's post implies she is discussing unforseen hurdles of the diet, considering her emphasis on having to read labels and finding it 'shockingly difficult' to find appropriate meals. But your comment does raise an interesting point there. I think there's a lot more to the ketogenic diet's success than just a reduction in junk food. Especially considering that a defining feature of many 'junk foods' is a high fat content, yet the keto diet advocates a high fat intake. But maybe you're right, maybe the way bacon fat is cooked and prepared (for a keto dieter) is less unhealthy than the cooked fats in chips and crisps.
My A1c has been 5.6 for 10 years. I eat 300 carbs per day. CGM, pump, and sugar surfing. It's all about timing and proper dosage. Seems so unnecessary to follow the keto diet. I also question what the long term effects could be.
Underdog Rising congratulations, but that is not my experience. It’s not “all about timing and dose” for me. While CGM has improved my health, It is unaffordable for most diabetics.
Keto is NOT an all meat diet. Most keto advocates, myself included, recommend 8 servings of vegetables per day as fiber is not typically counted in daily carb macros.
Mortieus Thank you. Exactly. You don’t metabolise cellulose etc. so they don’t count as carbs. So many veggies are too low carb to kick you out of ketogenesis.
@@MauroTamm I'm not going to go deep into this on this platform, but, an all meat diet ends in a process known as gluconeogenisis. A good keto diet consists of only about a half a gram of protein per pound of body weight, which relatively speaking is a very small amount of meat, especially if you include the protein from nuts, eggs, cheese and so on.
This is a generally good video, except for the fact that you made it sound like keto is an all meat diet. You will eat more vegetables (mostly fibrous ones that have low net carbs) than you have in your entire life on keto.
@@sillyfoxer9927 You're doing keto wrong then. Google it. No veggies? Lol good luck not getting vitamin deficiencies. Literally watch any video from Thomas Delauer, Dr Berg or Logan Sneed. Healthy keto contains tons of low carb veggies.
I did Keto for a year and a half it was exceptionally effective. The thing I would say is in my case, while weight control is easy putting on muscle and strength is really challenging. I ultimately stopped when my bench press dropped below 5X315. I’ve gone to a low carb instead of a no carb. I’ve basically eliminated poors sources. It’s pretty effective, but for most people it’s too complicated you have to know the composition of your food.
Look up 'darth luiggi' and 'ketogains' on google for some clues. A keto bodybuilder can stay very low carb all the time, but a small amount of dextrose before lifting weights dramatically improves performance.
It’s very hard to go keto fully, it requires nutrient dense foods, which unfortunately…. Nearly nowhere to be found, and very expensive, like, 3 times or more as expensive, I’m saying like $5 per lb vs $20 per lb, or $1 vs $3. It’s just ridiculous how food industry leads us to this food desert.
When you do 3 months of standard meats on keto. Switch to a low carb version. 50 carbs a day and 2 sugars. It becomes effective. Low carb version is much easier and if you work a 9-5 then you worknoff the extra carbs. Each sugar converts to 12.5 carbs and 12.5 carbs become 1 sugar. Roughly. Changes based on type of sugar/carb. That's what I've found. I go on harscore keto for 3 months during the winter when my hours slow and for 9 months I do the low carb very tiny amount of sugar. So its basically 75 carbs a day but I also have a very labor intensive career.
Really? I want to do keto mainly to lose fat but I am worried that my muscle gains and strength will vanish. I was thinking of still eating carbs though, just probably 10% of my macros. I dont do much cardio, I mostly lift. Any tips?
I have been following a keto diet for 6 months, and i am quite sure that during those months I have eaten more vegetables than in the previous 29 years of my life. I eat huge piles of (low carb) veggies 6 out of 7 days a week. Mostly leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables. Also zuchinni, green beans, asparagus, eggplant, among others - as long as i keep my net carbs below 20. Thats the only number I worry about. I dont count calories, or anything else for that matter. I just limit net carbohydrates. I have a "cheat" weekend once a month, where I eat pretty much whatever I want, mainly something I have been craving, but cant eat on keto. I have lost 85 pounds in these 6 months. I have not added any exercise to my lifestyle, but my job is quite physically demanding, and requires me to walk multiple miles and climb 20+ flights of stairs every day.
biggreenblob I started Keto last year and did it for 7 months and lost almost 50 pounds , very easy diet for me. I have since went back to eating a normal diet but found I ate smaller portions and I’m not as hungry all the time like before. I think it’s a great short term diet to get to goal weight then chill.
Good for you! I started it just after Christmas last year when a buddy of mine sold it to me with, "You basically eat steak and sausage all the time. Most of your meals, or large portions them, are just going to be meat." I've lost 45 pounds since then, and I eat far better now than I ever have since after I moved out of my parents. Later this year I'm going to start adding some basic exercise routines to my daily cycle and just watch the pounds bleed off.
Anas Takiyudi Grams. Below 50-60g of carbs is recommended to stay in ketosis. More than that and your body will still rely slightly on glucose rather than ketones.
Yes, but not many. Until recently, an unbiased approach to low carb diets was like a career death sentence in the scientific community thanks more to dogma than anything like evidence.
There's no long term scientific studies on any diet, except the Standard high carb diet of the last 80 years, which shows increases in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and early death. The closest thing to a long term study of keto diets are the hundreds of generations of various tribes who thrived on it.
scarboss 42 not really many, (although more have been coming in recent times) but it’s mostly because the creation of USDA dietary guidelines were so littered with lobbyists of the grain industry. Keto only recently came back into the limelight but really if you want a good example of long term high fat low carb diet, look at pretty much any indigenous diet. Whether be the us plains Indians or mongols, both subsisted on exclusive fatty meats and organ meats and were very physically impressive.
You can look at groups of people who for reasons like terrain, climate, and economics, have to eat such diet. Case in point, modern Mongolians. Guess what, they die a lot from heart disease and their life span isn't all that long (their life expectancy is shorter than freaking North Korea) How about places with quite long life span? Mediterranean diets with plenty of fish, cheese, vegetables, fruit, and wheat. Everything. Japanese diet: fermented soy, white rice, fish, vegetables, fruit, wheat. French people also live pretty long while drinking wine, eating cheese and baguette. The more you worry and try to min-max your diet, the less healthy you are, actually.
How the heck did a study of 7 people get cited as a credible source in this video? Thats... Not even remotely big enough to rule out other factors. How many of the sources were peer reviewed and reproduced?
This is the problem, many people from gym fanatics to diet 'experts' with no formal education in biology or scientific methods assume that as long as a study is published = its valid to use on arguments. Also, I think studying stuff like diet effects on people can be hard similar to sleep studies as its difficult to obtain participants and even harder to eliminate the effects of outside variables on your results.
Because he very specifically pointed out that it's a very small study in a field that hasn't had very much research put in and qualified everything exactly the way he should have. This isn't someone trying to obfuscate reality by citing studies with few patients and pretending that proves anything, it's suggesting that this phenomenon could be true and properly qualifying everything as "not figured out yet."
One main thing regarding weight loss on a keto diet is that, and this is supported by some studies, steeply hypocaloric diets tend to result in less muscle wasting when they are ketogenic. That is, a ketogenic diet mimics the muscle protection of a normal water fast, as opposed to the severe muscle wasting you'd get from eating a few hundred calories of bread per day (see: Minnesota Starvation Experiment).
My wife and I have been on keto for 14 months. I have lost 190 pounds without exercise due to being disabled and I am no longer a diabetic (a1c went from 12.1 to 6.1). No more insulin, metformin, cholesterol meds, and blood pressure meds. My wife has lost 100 pounds and after 27 years is also no longer a diabetic and is off all or her meds. Our doctor didn't like the idea when we first told him. He is now on keto and recommends it to his patients. For those that say there is no long term research on the effects of keto I say we were literately dying and now we are healthy. So we know keto works.

@@karllaur3866 Lucky you; I was foggy in the morning, and had insomnia at night. Energy levels extremely low. For some people it takes longer than two weeks; especially if they are not monitoring their salt intake. My end goal was not ketosis, but to control my appetite by restricting carbs, and I only eliminated grains and starchy carbs, and then eventually I started passing over fruit. Imagine my surprise when I started getting ketones in my urine, and fruity breath - more than five months later. So newer information coming out from a couple of the conferences held over the last two-three months, is showing ketosis is NOT necessary unless you are diabetic, or are trying to fix a specific health problem. What most people can do to lose weight is just restrict carbs - you figure out which ones, and how many grams per day makes you feel best.
Saying keto has no advantage because there is little difference between test groups eating high carb and high fat while glossing over the the fact that most studies control total calorie intake is at best disingenuous. People in ketosis spontaneously reduce their calorie intake because hunger is stemmed by stored energy being available for use. They don't magically lose more weight than someone restricting calories, but they do it without hunger.
I've been on Keto myself for the past two years. I was diagnosed with Menere's Disease, an inner ear disorder, that caused me to experience painful, frequent vertigo attacks. I was dizzy to the point of vomiting multiple times per day at random moments, it was misery. After being on Keto for three months, the attacks just stopped altogether. I didn't need to take medication to fight them anymore. I haven't had a vertigo attack since. Oh, and I also lost 60 lbs. after starting Keto. I know it's only anecdotal evidence, but it worked for me.
one side effect of my going keto->carnivore was improved hearing. I had abt 60% hearing loss in my right ear, 40% left due to infant ear infections. At a recent trip to get my hearing checked (first time in 30+ years), the specialist told me many autoimmune disorders cause inflammation affecting aural nerve conduction. I'm guessing your improved symptoms share the same fix as mine
Keto dieting is also great for other neurologic issues, including sensory integration, chronic neuralgia, and cognitive diseases. It's incredible as a therapeutic diet. I think a lot of people who criticize strict keto dieting are failing to understand that any strict diet plan is about more than just feeling good, these protocols get implemented to treat specific problems. And they're very effective for it. Personally I stay at least slightly in ketosis because it's helpful for my sensory hyperacusis and cognitive issues, and when I discovered it in the first place it ended what had been years of neuralgia/myalgia. It's been proven for a long time that it's a neuroprotective metabolic state. But a lot of people want to feel special and important by being dismissive of it because they wrongly equate science with cynicism, so even though we're the ones backed by facts, somehow this subject is still considered contentious ...
Ketogenesis is the real subject of this video. Not the specific prescriptions of other aspects of the diet. Besides, at this point there are many versions of the keto diet due to the nature of the Internet and countiess low-knowledge people who love to give dietary advice.

I have been overweight all my life, and tried every diet I could find. When on a diet, I would only lose a little weight, then two weeks later I'd go right back to not caring about what I ate or how much. Then I started keto 3 months ago. So far, I have actually been able to stick with it, and have lost a significant amount of weight, more than I have ever lost in my whole life. And I haven't even exercised once. My mom has diabetes, and her blood sugar was typically in the 300's, for many years, but after just a few weeks on keto, they were down to a normal, non-diabetic range, and have stayed there ever since. Think about how humans ate before agriculture, what did they eat while the race was evolving? Mostly meat and whatever they could find growing naturally (hunter/gatherers) which is essentially what Keto is. For millions of years, humans ate meat and naturally growing vegitation, evolving to survive and thrive on that diet. Agriculture (grains; high carb diets) has only been around for about 12,000 years, not long enough for humans to evolve to survive on this diet change.

I personally started eating a carnivorous keto diet 5 months ago. Primarily it consists eggs, beef, beef liver, cheese and cream. I feel better on this diet than I ever have otherwise on my standard American diet. It’s helped me with my mood, energy, physique, mental clarity, everything. I can’t recommend it enough.
I grew up big, but eventually toned down to be thinner. All I can say is that, after 6 years the one major thing i notice is that the keto diet lead to me being less hungry overall. For that, I think it may have something to do with an effect in the ghrelin levels of some people.
I think an ideal diet consists of red and white meats with semi frequent leafy vegetable intake for vitamins and minerals and carbohydrates supplied from root vegetables for glucose and semi frequent fruits for fructose. Something like An apple and banana 3 times a week, radishes and or potatoes 3 times a week. Fish or poultry for 1 meal (periodically using small lean mammals as a substitute), beef, venison, bear, or pork for the other. I dont see any health benefit to only eating meat considering humans are omnivorous but only eating meats and vegetables/fruits is nothing but beneficial.
I also have noticed less fatigue and greater mental sharpness as well as stamina when comparing it to a standard diet. I think when people here the term "diet" they get the wrong idea and that's when it goes downhill.
I've been Keto for about 2 years now. Thank you for putting out this unbiased video. I did lose a lot of weight and I have been able to keep it off. The best part of this diet is the full feeling. On 1400 calories a day eating a lot of fat I am way fuller than I would be on 1400 calories a day with breads and fruit. It's because of this fact keto is easier to stick to for the long run.
I hope the people commenting on "It's as simple as CICO!" see your comment. I'm don't want to argue about absorption rates of different foods and liver function minutia. But luckily we don't have to. High fat, low carb makes sub 1500 calories daily so easy. Before keto I'd easily have 700 calories for breakfast, be hungry by mid-morning, eat a 100 calorie snack, eat another 900 calories at lunch. Then be hungry by mid-afternoon. Have another 100-200 calorie snack. Then be hungry right when I got home for another 900 or so calorie dinner and most likely a snack before bed. Yes, there are lots of things wrong with that, and I could cut calories many different ways. But having 120 calories of MCT oil in coffee once in the morning and once at noon gets me to 7 or 8 pm on 240 or so calories. Then a reasonable, keto dinner with mostly vegetables (which this video got so wrong). Add a snack of nuts, low-sugar berries, dark chocolate, or similarly low carb anywhere in there and I finish the day under 1500 calories without thinking about it once. No pain, no suffering, no complaining.
I think you should clarify that they literally have to be GREENS, and not just all things we consider to be vegetables. For instance, you can't eat a lot of Onions, as onions have a lot of carbs. You also have to factor out fruit and many delicious nuts (like cashews) because they have so many carbs packed in their tiny bodies. Bananas are especially high in carbs. I'm not saying you can't eat them at all, but to stay in Ketosis you have to eat them in extremely small portions, smaller than most other "healthy" diets.

Did the Keto diet and going to get back on it again soon. I dropped 30 lbs in about a month and a half. It was tough to maintain though - not because I had a hard time staying on it (it’s my preferred method purely for fat loss, and find it easier because I don’t have to count calories, just avoid eating over 20-30g carbs a day) but because of how difficult it is to go out to dinners or eat at home with everyone else. I either had to order low carb veggies instead of potatoes, or eat at home and get a light meal. People got annoyed by my “healthy eating” telling me to “live a little” but the truth is you can’t overconsume carbs otherwise you’ll get knocked back out of ketosis (and feel like crap in the process - physically I mean). Pretty much just ate eggs, a lot of feta cheese, Costco roast chicken (because you know.. it’s damn cheap and so good), and frozen broccoli and cauliflour). Drank almond milk protein shakes (that were made with stevia, almond milk because regular milk actually has surprisingly high amounts of sugar - and also found... almond milk makes protein shakes way easier to drink imo), heavy cream and MCT oil (easy to break down into ketones). The thing is, it’s not a miracle. Combine the lack of carbs (which you only need about 20 of - for your average person - glucose is produced through other means as well, not just carbs) with high fat and moderate protein, you get full pretty quick. When I was counting my calories to see what I was taking in, It was between 1200-1400 calories a day - and I was not feeling hungry at all (since your insulin levels are stable - almost zero hunger pains, even when you are hungry, so it’s good to develop a routine. You could do this with any diet that balanced your macronutrients though. I just found this the easiest one to maintain. I didn’t really need to think about what I needed to eat. Did I rubber-band back? Very little, about 5-8 pounds (water weight usually due to depleted glycogen - carbs store about 4x their weight in water). Eating like this though taught me not to overeat, and even on carbs I’m okay with avoiding overindulgence... just like... keep me away from anything with the words hazelnut and chocolate in it.
There is a thing called Rabbit starvation (or Protein poisoning) caused by lack of fat in the diet. Some early European Australian explorers suffered from this as they lived off the land and ate mostly meat, especially Rabbits, which had been introduced early in European settlement (Invasion) of Australia, and bread like crazy. The European explorers mostly ate the red meat as they were used to. The locals also lived on a lot of meat but mostly ate the fatty organs and were fine.
That last part about being able to stick to a diet is key. And ironically is exactly why ive been enjoying the keto diet. Despite cutting out a whole food group its just been easy for me to maintain. @@jackflash6377 okay? Or I can eat perfectly healthy food when I get cravings? My point here was that the kind of cravings I get has changed, dramatically for the better.
Not mentioned is that getting off carbs stops food cravings which leads to naturally eating less; getting down to one meal a day is easy. Once you reach that point, multi-day fasts are then easy. Also not mentioned is that a Kcal isn't a Kcal. Our bodies are not calorimeters. We don't digest carbs, protein, and fats in the same ratios and chemical processes. Long story short, fat may be high in calories but we absorb a smaller percentage of the potential energy vs how carbs are quickly turned to glucose at a higher percentage of potential energy. Calories, like weight, are poor gauges for weight loss. I've been on the keto diet for almost two years following a pre-diabetes diagnosis. After 4 months on the diet, and 30lbs lost, my blood work is now normal. I eat one meal a day, do a 3 day fast once a month, and a 7 day fast once a year. It works -- IF -- you never, ever cheat.
@@LafemmebearMusic Combining a high-fat diet with carbs is deadly dangerous. You have to keep it under 20g of carbs (after subtracting fiber) per day, or you risk doing possibly permanent damage to your cardiovascular system.
The "studies" directly contradict my experience with the keto diet. I broke my ankle 18 months ago. I weighed 415 lbs. During recovery and pt, my doctor put me on the keto diet. I've been on it ever since. Right now, weigh 295 pounds, and counting. I feel great, more energy and my mental focus is as good as it has ever been. Maybe I'm an exception, but that's been my experience.
I'll echo that that experience is not an exception at all. It's just the nutrition field of research just prefers to pretend that you, and the rather large segment of the population which has had this experience, don't exist. It's definitely a conspiracy.
@@SirCharles12357 I went to the dentist recently, and all of them were like, "Oh thank goodness, PLEASE stay on the keto diet! It's saving your mouth too!"
Doing keto and IF for 3 years, I don't really miss carbs, and have kept the weight off. Not everyone can do it though, so it's not for everyone. But lowering carbs is a good idea for most people.
The one thing I wish you guys had mentioned is another issue with more modern keto diets is that the Inuits eat organs of animals they ate. These organs are high in vitamins and minerals that someone would normally get from vegtables/fruits. They also ate seals/fish that are high in fatty tissue very different from the cows here in the western world. Some meat they ate raw. So the modern Keto Diet varies greatly from the Inuit's original diet.
@@RitardxSJ It's calories in calories out. The only reason you might be stuck is that your body lowers it's metabolism when it's been on a deficient for periods of time. Calculate your metabolism -500 cal and have a re-feed day where you go +100 cals over your metabolism. Still do keto to not feel starved and eat nutrient dense foods.
My main reason for the Keto diet is controlling Diabetes. I was diagnosed with it in January of 2018 and fully reversed it by August 2018. My doctor wanted to put me on Metformin and I instead suggested a diet change first. Her and her fellow Dr's almost didn't believe it. Don't follow the advice of eating Carbs when you're Diabetic, eliminate them! The exception is vegetables, you can and should include them as I have.
Idc what anyone says, I was strict keto for 8 weeks and then low carb (under 100g a day) for the following 6 months and I have lost 60 pounds. I’m down to 130 and under 20% body fat! Life changer
There's tons of them out there. It tends to work as a complete cure for type 2 - as long as the patient remains on the diet anyway. For type 1, it improves blood sugar regulation massively and reduces insulin requirements up to 75%.
I'd really like a deeper dive into the studies that supposedly test the keto diet. Many of them call a 30/20% carb diet "low-carb", which, while compared to 70% carbs isn't close to the 5-10% carbs recommended.
Maybe you have what you need by now, but look up a TH-cam video called Stop Feeding Your Pet Mouse Keto from Dr Berg. It would be hard for me to look up the studies I've looked at in the past against keto but they all followed the same sloppy premises as the one mentioned here. Keep in mind as he's gently calling them out that the GI of glucose is 100. I tried to include a good keto calculator link from Plan and Conquer, but apparently that's not allowed. So you can try to look it up if you haven't found a non confusing one already. Keep in mind net carbs are always 20 or below, so it shouldn't even be asking that but it's still the best calculator I've found for starters. In my experience protein and fat grams can be adjusted according to how you feel, if you feel you're eating to much after a while. Intermittent fasting and eating non processed foods with low GI levels are highly important in keto as well. Edit: Sorry it was dextrose they fed the mice, it's the same as glucose and has the same GI.
6 months on keto, so far: down 45 lbs, 4.5 BMI drop, 90% of my psoriasis gone, 5 pant size drop, no muscle loss, and it's still going. I'm hungry much less frequently and on average I eat within a 4 hr window. The key is to keep a reasonable caloric intake still as to not lower your basal metabolic rate too much, i.e. use a generic calories in/out diet calculator to lose a set amount per week, and keep your calories around that number otherwise your body will slow down your metabolism to compensate.
Keto works for a lot of people - I lost 30 pounds in a very short time without feeling like I was starving myself. I don’t do keto as a long term plan, but it’s a great feeling knowing I can always lose weight if it gets out of hand in the future.
@@hermione3muller674 Keto actually reverses diabetes. Check out virtahealth.com to see their latest study with 2 year data. 60% remission...with a diet and NO drugs. Shits wild.
Diabetics on keto still need insulin. Protein digestion causes the liver to release glucagon, a natural hormone that results in a rise in blood sugar. Diabetics still need insulin to counteract that glucagon induced rise. Especially if you're a type 1 diabetic like me.
Keto definitely helped me with binge eating, I love it but I know it's not for everyone and it takes a bit more effort and organisation. But for me it's worth the cons because I got my life back from addiction and depression 😁
If it's "not for you", you can always try some home-made variant of keto and paleo of your own. As long as it sticks to the low carbs high fat principle it should give you benefits.
@@LuisAldamiz I did it 10 years ago. It worked like crazy with weight loss. But I got underweight and my endurance sports went bad. After that I tried to put on some weight, but I couldn't for a while (half a year). Got into binge eating because of that and into a kind of teenage depression. End of story I doubled the amount of pounds I lost (~20 lost, 40 gained). Not gonna do diets again or get crazy about weight. Isn't healthy either (to lose some weight fast and then jojoing). Just try to be healthy overall and enjoy life.
@@sammyruncorn4165 I don't think keto/paleo as a "diet" (although it can be when going hardcore, because you do lose weight and gain energy) but as healthy eating. Diets are IMO calory restriction and there's absolutely no calory restriction in keto/paleo. You were probably eating less than you needed, especially not enough (quality) fat. Why are olympic athletes like Dr. Ekberg promoting keto if it would not work for themselves? You will keep gaining weight not for "binge eating" but for eating too many carbs. It will also destroy your metabolism, causing metabolic syndrome, which often leads to diabetes later in life, among other problems. I can see how one can not be strict for this or that other reason (I'm not strict at all these days but I was originally strict and worked very well in terms of weight loss, improved health and greater energy, the first thing I noticed).
@@LuisAldamiz If you don't want to label it as a diet that's fine. I just wanted to bring another perspective to it, since I read so many people's comments about it always being like "it changed my life" (for the better), but almost never the opposite though I know a few people (me included) for whom it just didn't work or went way overboard. I guess that's just people being more inclined to share something that worked/ success than failure. You get to see all the novelists and celebrities, that made it, but rarely the many, who had to give up/ perished along the way. Studies (not anecdotal evidences) also support it not faring better than any other diet/ cutting-some-macrogroup-out-eating-practice. You rarely hear about the failures or possible complications (loss of menstruation for women for example, though that might just be a general problem related to restricted eating/ huge weight loss). If you think I will get worse health-wise by not (massively) cutting out carbs immerse yourself in that scenario if you want and it makes you happy. Since the years I did it, my weight has gotten back to normal (back to square one, lost the extra 20 pounds again), but I'm much more happy now with my body. I try to eat less processed stuff (sweets, cakes...) in general, but I'm not beating myself up about it any more (or any macronutrients that is), enjoying potatoes, rice and pasta on a regular basis again. And I personally think that is the only good part about that eating-practice and any other, it might make you more concious about what you are fueling your body with in general.
When I was doing an office job the keto diet worked really good for me cuz I would do endurance workouts. But once I switched to becoming a firefighter EMT, where I needed short bursts of intense energy to put out fires and such, there was no way I could stay on the keto diet. So I learned to eat healthy carbs and lots of fruit and veggies of course.

i can not confirm that high carb/low calorie diet is as effective at weightloss as lowcarb/keto diet. i tried for over a year to loose weight while eating highcarb, in the end i gained 3kg while starveing for a year. i realy honestly and totaly urge you to not even try it, it was horrible. after getting into ketosis i lost 50kg in a year without any hunger or exercise or any effort whatsoever. that was 2 years ago and im still in ketosis or at least very low carb, holding my ideal weight. im not sticking with verylowcarb because i have to to loose weight, im sticking with it, because it feels just so much better. i can finaly read 8 digits and remember 7 of them correctly while writing them down. with high carb i struggled after 3. my mind is clear, my body has full power all day long, you couldnt pay me to go back.
Similar story here. Everyone is different and aren't likely to respond to the same diets in the same ways. On a high carb diet I always feel hungry, like I could use a snack. Obviously only did bad things to my weight. On a low carb diet, I don't really get that hungry, and I intermittently fast. I never go hungry, and it's really hard to overeat because I feel so full after each meal. I think it comes down to that low carb/high fat as a diet allows me to keep a calorie deficiency, *without* going hungry. It was and still is game changing for my weight loss.
Why did you starve yourself on the high carb diet? I'm doing highcarb/low fat and lost 10 pounds so far in my first month and never starved myself. But I also love potatoes, pasta, rice, and oatmeal. I don't worry about calories and I eat when I feel hungry. I've tried a high fat/low carb diet and felt absolutely horrible after a week. The first time I tried it, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. My time on the treadmill declined drastically. The second time I tried it almost a year later, I started vomiting after a week. I also have pre-existing heart and kidney issues so I think keto just isn't for me. Always listen to your body.
@@suicune2001 simple, when i eat carbs, my blood sugar rises. when it eventually falls back down, my body screams hunger. at that point i have to either eat or endure. if i dont allways endure, i gain weight because high carb food simply has a lot more calories then what i burn in a day of sitting infront of a monitor. this is why highcarb diets never stick, while "on diet" people go to the gym and burn the calories the food inherently comes with. the second they stop, they gain back all the weight and then some.
@@tomduke1297 The hunger thing I can understand. I eat a giant bowl of oatmeal with berries in the morning. At that point I'll have to decide if I want to eat dinner or not since I go to bed really early. I sit at a desk all day as well so I'll see how this goes. Yes, it works, I lost 63lbs in 5 months. Just don't give up when you hit a wall, re-evaluate what you're eating and add some exercise, i.e. walking to your diet program.
IDK, but it seems misleading, starting with the video thumbnail and the historic examples, that you are showing keto as a meat- & fat-only diet. In reality it should be high in non-starchy, high-fiber vegetables; high in fat (which do not come just from eating animals) and MODERATE in proteins. This is not Atkins...
Calling it "bro science" in the title instead of "nutrition science" was a clear sign that we shouldn't expect an academically rigorous treatment of the topic, IMO. That and the fact that SciShow at this point has a history of totally failing at rigor.
@@ItsAsparageese how was this not a scientific approach to the keto diet. He mentioned the benefits of the keto diet, the only thing he said, it isn't for everyone. The title was pretty accurate, it's becoming a bro science in the fact that many people aren't implementing the diet in a very scientific way. I'm personally into powerlifting myself so carbs are definitely a benefit for my workout routine, yet I have keto friends who keep trying to shove it down my throat as if I need to be on Keto. I'm in excellent shape, and I'm reaching all my strength goals faster than my friends, so why do they think they have the authority to push their diet on me.
I've been low carb dieting not cutting down enough to maintain ketosis. I eat more protein than is recommended and eat high fiber vegetables. Calorie control has been easier for me than on other previous diets and I believe it has helped control my blood sugar which was diabetic.
Eating a healthy keto has changed my life. I keep my carbs and fat low so my body burns the fat that's on my body. I've lost over 25 pounds and regained my health. I eat way more veggies on keto. I no longer eat sugar or most processed foods. Keto is life!
@@Szanth Before I started keto last year I was eating whole grains, fruits and veggies plus meat. The high carbs kept me from losing any weight for years despite the fact I was watching my calories and exercising. I used to have horrible inflammation in my joints as well. Now I don't even get colds anymore. I haven't felt this good since my twenties. Keto works.
@@Szanth What do you think the keto diet is? Basically what you listed. Stop eating sugars and processed foods. Eat fat and protein and veggies along with a few carbs.
@@jackflash6377 Keto only specifies minimal carbs with a replacement in fat and protein. He said it weird, so it seemed like he was saying "I do keto! I know it works because I lost weight! So I was like "You could've just cut out the sugar and processed foods without the carb restriction and probably gotten similar results."
@@Szanth Probably. But you have to cut all grains and starchy vegetables, and most fruit. And some specific health results do require you pay attention to the ratio fat: protein:carbs.
big fan of keto myself, indeed one calorie is one calorie and keto does not make much of difference if total calories is same, but keto is really good at keep you feeling full thus a lot easier to stay on lower caloric intake, 1500cal with a normal diet might be miserable but 1500cal with a keto diet feels pretty pleasant
yes, especially i do not feel hunger or craving at all. i had my bloodsugar measured continuously over a trial period. with carbs it had sparks and downs. without carbs on full keto it was stable throughout the day and the night, no spikes, neither up nor down. that correlates with my total lack of feeling hungry or feeling completely drained when bloodsugar plummets too low on a carb diet at certain times during the day.
Well actually protein isn't used as energy in the body, if the body can avoid it. It's used for rebuilding cells, muscle and so on. Energy for moving around and such, comes from fats or carbs.
Keto doesn't make you lose fat weight by itself. BUT, the resulting shift in your metabolism to use/burn more fat allows you to skip meals (aka intermittent fasting) much more easily, and effectively use your stored body fat, which does lead to fat weight loss. One can do unhealthy keto (e.g. not enough nutrient dense vegetables) and experience bad side effects, and/or simply intake as many calories as you did before starting the diet, and you wouldn't expect fat weight loss in that case.
Inuit and other indigenous people also ate the animals head to toe including bone marrow and organs and the animals were eating a wild diet unlike our commercial feed lot livestock
... and intermittent fasting on a non-ketogenic diet will not give you the same effects, as the carbs will drive your insulin up farther and keep it elevated longer, so you will need to fast longer between feeding windows to get the same results, where fasting is harder to begin with, as your body will be getting hangry as your blood sugar drops
I think the main point here is how easy keto is to stick to. Once you get past the sugar cravings your body works with you. Unlike other diets that you feel your body fighting against you the whole time. Even after the keto diet a lot of people become educated on what real food is. And suddenly over sweetened and over refined food loses its appeal.
Thanks for a really good video about the ketogenic diet! I was linked here by a friend (he is not keto, he is against it lol while I've been keto for 2 years). I must say this was a really well done and informative video. Yes keto is not superior to any other just because you lose weight quickly. However it can be argued that the power of keto shows itself in other ways. As we say in the keto community: "I came for the weightloss, stayed for the benefits" ~ and that's very true for most. The ketogenic diet is *not* a weightloss diet, never has been but is now treated as such. It's not only ancestral but also has roots in the medical community (for treating epilepsy as you said). It can treat other things as well, or at least put it in remission. Type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, other mental issues. I do not say healing because once you go off keto those issues tends to come right back (at least for me and a lot of others), therefore keto is not a cure, but a way to manage. It's something I'll want to (and probably have to) do for the rest of my life, and I'm very thankful I found the ketogenic diet. Once again thanks for a great video :)
PyroMonkey I combined the Keto Diet and Intermittent fasting (One Meal a Day) No Lie I started three months ago. I was 181lbs. Now I'm 154lbs! So many people have said I looked Soo diff and I can finally got small and mediums
In terms of fat loss, the idea is you get low insulin and thus you use up more fat. However, you don't need 12 hours for insulin to go down, in between meals works fine too. You might get more efficiency but how much is debatable. However I do think people on a fasting scheme tend to eat less overall. Because.....1) it's easier to not snack if you take away the choice.....2) It's harder to shove tons of food down your face in a shorter period of time. So yeah in short.... it works. If you go back to normal eating though your weight will slowly return to your "baseline". Your body actually regulates this very well (unless if you have an issue like diabetes in which case it is totally broken).
The National Food Pyramid recommends that the two largest food groups to consume each day are fruit (7 servings of carbs there) and breads (5 servings of carbs there). Then, 3 servings of milk products (which in milk is half carbs and half protein)..... In that Type 2 food induced diabetics aren't able to eat carbs without drug use, it is evident that the government food pyramid is wrong.
@@RoninXDarknight I remember watching a video recently with one of the researchers talking about her experience when the government were first coming up with the food pyramid. (I think '73). She said, her coworkers and herself recommended 3-4 servings a day. But of course, we all know that's not what the government recommended.
All I can say is it works for me. By experimenting (I'd never heard of keto at that stage) I cut out all simple carbohydrates and rid myself of a lifetime (63 years) of migraines and swollen ankles, got rid of hip and back pain and general stiffness (at least 6 years duration) and increased my energy levels. I'm vegetarian and get complex carbs from vegetables. When I recently went off track and ate sugar, flour etc for a few days I ended up cranky, pessimistic and lethargic, with bloating followed by my first migraine in years. It works for me and that's all that counts. My only problem is keeping enough weight on! Upping the healthy fats takes care of that.
Anecdotal here: but keto really does help you loose weight! Why? Well im less hungry simple as. When i eat carbs i find i get awful hunger, its almost painful. On Keto not so much, "yea i could eat" is the best way i could explain how i feel when i get hungry on keto. I dont think i have ever said im starving on keto. Also its not just meat, i eat probably more greens on keto than normal. I also eat nuts and olives its a great source of nutrition. Finally there was 0 mention of the affect this diet has on people with diabetic and pre-diabetic symptoms. Its well worth looking into that alone.
Starvation mode may have long term health effects. Fruits and Veggies have so many proven benefits to compare them to a fad diet like Keto with hardly any data is silly.
Keto is not just steak, bacon, and pork chops day in and day out. Why do all these critics forget the veggies. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, zucchini, avocado, etc. And how about the eggs butter, coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, etc. Then there are breads that are made with almond or coconut flour. Now the body wasn't meant to run on glucose only. Carbs or glucose is not essential because the body can make it's own glucose when needed through a process called gluconeogenesis. Then there are the terms this guy is using like "keto evangelist " or "keto weight loss magic"... This is, and I'm not sorry to say it, a disinformation campaign. Wow in the end of the video. No diet is one size fits all then makes a point that keto is the worst. Really. My diabetes is gone, I've lost a ton of weight, have crazy energy, have never felt better at work where I'm driving a gas truck, picking up heavy hoses and fittings. I was only able to do 2 jobs a day. 3 if I pushed. Now I'm doing 4 to 5 jobs a day with ease and feeling good. Also my paychecks are looking fatter now. 44yrs old and feel like a freaking teen again. Keep the disinformation coming. I'm no keto evangelist, I'm no keto magician, and keto has been around since the late 1800's to treat epilepsy and in the early 1900's to help cancer patients but then the pharmaceutical industry slowly did away with all that stuff.
I lost like 50 pounds in 6 months just by not eating sugary snacks and drinking sugary drinks all the time, and otherwise eating whatever the hell I wanted. I call it the Eat Like An Adult diet.
The good thing is, It's not actually a Zero carb diet so just eating meat and fat isn't the be all and end all, you can eat a reasonable amount of high quality low carb veggies like broccoli, asparagus, spinach and mushrooms... which just so happen to be very healthy... and taste better covered in grass fed butter! So it's kind of a win win situation!
I've been eating one meal a day for several years now. In January, I decided to try keto. I didn't eat for 48 hours and then I ate a meat+green salad meals, approx. 1000 calories, all in one meal in the evening. I lost 14kg (some 30 pounds) in two weeks. I always started feeling hungry only in the evening. I haven't been on keto since maybe February and I haven't gained a single pound back. I need to get back on that and lose at least another 14kg
I've been on keto for about 15 months now (fairly faithful, cheating on holidays and occasional weekend). I stick to it for my mental clarity. It's like being on my ADD meds from childhood.
"A body without carbs has a backup plan.." What if the opposite is true? That we thrive most on fatty meat, but as omnivores can eat carbs as seasonally available or as a starvation food. I think it may well be the case that humans evolved as mainly Carnivores. My personal experience eating only animal based foods has been incredibly positive. Stronger, energetic, clear mind, amazing digestion. I truly believe most people will feel amazing eating only meat.
I lost 150 lbs using keto. And I promise you I ate salad for lunch every single day of it. People just seem to think that bacon is the only food you eat on keto. Smh
Nice overview of the diet. The diet practically saved my life. Never been in such steady stable mood and almost gave up on ever losing weight until I tried it. Just the mental stability is enough to stay in it. I may be more carnivore now but still have the same effects 3 months on.
I used to work at a Children's Hospital. From what I remember, the kids who underwent bone marrow transplants had to eat a ketogenic diet for at least a couple weeks.
6:12 you skipped over your conclusion about sharpening of the mind after this part. This is the best thing about Keto in my opinion, after being on it for several months.
You can knock this "diet" all you want. All I know is, I started it (with intermittent fasting) 3 months ago at 254 pounds, and I'm now 223. No running (even though I know I should). I'm just as active as I was when I gained all the weight. I don't care if it's supposed to fail, or not supported by science. If the weight is coming off, I'm gonna keep doing what I'm doing.
I went on a sort-of keto diet when my husband was on chemotherapy because had had read studies that indicated it could minimized nausea. He had no nausea and I lost 30 pounds in the past 18 months. I’m not strict about it these days; I will eat a little dark chocolate but no pasta and bread. I do eat lots of avocados and lots of dark green veggies but generally avoid the carb-heavy ones, such as tomatoes and carrots. I’m not religious about it, though. In general I would say I feel better and I most definitely enjoy wearing clothes that are two sizes smaller. Also: No soft drinks, no sweet tea, no artificial sweeteners. I don’t like beer but occasionally drink a glass of red wine.
This video is very misleading. The keto diet is not a high protein diet. It's high fat. You don't have to have much protein on keto. There's vegetarian and vegan versions of keto. It involves lots of nuts and avocados. I just started keto after 6 months of research first. I'm eating more green vegetables than I did before. I get maybe 5 to 6 servings of green vegetables a day now. I started the diet with permission from my Dr. as a way to control my diabetes, which is one of the main uses of this diet. I'm incredibly disappointed you guys didn't mention how the keto diet was used to treat type 1 diabetes before injectable insulin was invented. I'm also upset that you compared it to Atkins. They are not the same diet. Also after the first month or so you don't lose weight any faster than other diets. 1 to 2 lbs a week is normal. The reason for doing it is controlling blood sugar and therefore controlling cravings. I have struggled with binge eating disorder since I was 6 years old. This diet allows me to control my craving and appetite. No other diet does that
Yeah, the more I think about the video, the more I realize how much they left out. If you are not not diabetic, or trying to control seizures, or put PCOS in remission, then your macros are restricted when it comes to protein. But if you are trying to lose weight, Dr. Naiman, and Dr. Bickman have shown you can get into ketosis by not being so strict with protein. The key is restricting carbs to 20 grams a day or less. In fact, both doctors caution how much fat you consume if you are trying to lose weight - the goal should always be to get your body to burn the fat stored on your body first, that's what it's there for - fuel. In other words, the goal should be to become fat adapted, and not spend all your time in ketosis.
Meat is extremely high in nutrients. The main thing missing is vitamin C, but you can still eat low carb vegetables such as broccoli, kale and avocado, which are very high in vitamin C. There's some bro science about not needing vitamin C on a low carb diet, but I don't really know about that
I get more vitamins in my keto diet than in my regular diet. If you're following the advice of folks like Dr. Jason Fung, you will be eating green leafy vegetables and other low - carb plant foods in addition to healthy saturated fats. That's not to say that carnivore diets can't be done, but they require that people eat more like natural predators (that is, include the organ meats we tend to avoid in modern society for reasons I don't really get), and in my opinion it would be a shame to skip out on variety when you can get it.
@@anon5119 as far as I heard, it isn't that you don't need it, as much as you don't need as high levels of it because you absorb it better or something. That said, there's usually no good reasons to intentionally lower your c vitamin intake because there are so many vegetables and more you can consume on keto that will give you way more of the vitamin c you need, even if you had been on a normal diet.
You didn't even acknowledge the hunger suppressing claim of keto in weight loss which is a big pillar of it. I'm not saying it's right but you should at least cover it when making a fair analysis. It's hard to make definitive claims with the science of nutrition so please don't callously label it as "bro science". There are many significant scientific authorities who support the keto diet and they're working towards bettering their understanding of it.
"there are many scientific authorities that support keto" No, there isn't. A scientific authority is a health institution, some random doctor or expert isn't a health authority and there isn't a single health authority on the planet that would prescribe keto for anyone with the sole exception of people with seizures.

My uncle has heart disease and diabetes, and Dr. Schwarz told him to eat 120g of fat, 70g of protein, and 40g of carbs every day. I don't visit my uncle that often but in the past he also had a stroke, and has troubke remembering/using the right words and after eating less carbs my mom and I believe his health and cognition have improved. I feel like that introduction might be a bit misleading. I'm not on a ketogenic diet, but my understanding is that it's a "normal" level of protein. Really just replacing most carb calories with fat. So a normal amount of meat, but then instead of mashed potatoes you put a bunch of fatty dressing on your salad and a bunch of butter on your broccoli.

@@theboomshadow Yeah that's the main challenge, sticking on a diet. Most diets are extremely hard and unsatisfactory to stick on it, plus diets high on carb make people feel exhausted and wanting for more food. Keto is way easier to stay full, feel energetic and still lose weight.
I tried doing a keto diet for about a month with assistance from a legitimate nutritionist. I felt like crap the entire time, didn't lose any more weight than I had been losing previously with a lower calorie diet, and I started losing hair like crazy. My diet was even tweaked by the nutritionist when my hair started falling out, but it didn't help. If the keto diet works for some, that's great for them, but I had much better success with a lower calorie diet.
What we're you told to eat in your version of keto? The specific sources and types of fats and protein matter a lot. For instance, if your fats are mostly omega 6 and little omega 3, don't expect good results and I won't be surprised by hair loss and skin damage.
Please correct me anywhere I'm wrong. Inuits consume large portions of fresh meat that is also frequently raw and thus they consume carbs in the form of the glycogen stored in muscle (meat), contrary to popular belief of how inuits are in some form of Keto their entire life due to eating mainly meat. Much lower carb content in the meat we're used to because it breaks down over time. books.google.com/books?id=ltqvLpKHRWIC&lpg=PA396&ots=Sl1rzEjlLm&pg=PA399#v=onepage&q&f=false Also, the vast majority of several Inuit populations exhibit a variant of the metabolic disorder CPT-1a deficiency known as “the Arctic variant” which seems to prevent ketosis. Not sure if I have all that right or not. But you guys seemed way more sure than I think you should be that Inuits are ketogenic/on a ketogenic diet.
Pretty much this. Ketosis is an inefficient metabolic state because the body has to make the small amounts of glucose it needs by itself through gluconeogenesis. This is inefficient and not beneficial for survival, so it's a no brainer that peoples that ate something akin to a ketogenic diet would adapt to it so they can stay out of ketosis. Also, like you mentioned, the muscle glycogen as well as the sugar in the blood that is consumed and a few plants here and there would keep almost all people out of ketosis. Its a survival state to keep one from starving, not the metabolic state our body ought to be in most of the time. Since people who eat a ketogenic diet in their natural environment adapt to stay out of ketosis, it can be assumed that ketosis is something the body enters only when it has no other choice. Of course, an inefficient metabolic state leads to weight loss, which is what most people want. The main problem with ketogenic diets are the lack of any scientific data that show any benefit for long term health and longevity. Back in the day Atkins wanted to conduct such a study but it never happened and to this day no such study exists.
There's not a whole lot of glycogen in muscle meats. any nutritional breakdown of meat shows next to 0 carbs. unless you literally eat it as you've slaughtered the animal.. and it might not even be more than a few grams here and there. no biggie
@@nioxic77 Which many of the native tribes that are supposed to be in ketosis do all the time. Plus you forgot the blood sugar. Also, the sugar in muscle meat breaks down over time which is why there is non in commercial meats. Fresh meat contains enough to keep those people out of ketosis. Simple as that. The carb limit on a ketogenic diet is very low. 30-50 g if you ask most keto dieters. That is easily achieved. A few vegetables here and there + the carbs from the meat/blood is enough to reach that. The claim that humans evolved in ketosis is just ridiculous and is easily disproven just by simply showing that the body goes out of ketosis the first chance it gets and people who would be in ketosis develop genetic adaptations to avoid ketosis.
I'd think the large amount of protein would kick them out of ketosis before any of that stuff would. A keto diet is high fat, moderate protein, low carb. You can't just achieve it from eating meat alone. Unless you only eat the fattiest bits of meat then maybe.
@@Based_ChameleonOn a keto diet you are don't not count carbs that come from fiber in the food. So you can eat a lot of the right types of vegetables on a keto diet and remain in ketosis.
I literally could not have been more happier after going keto (3 years strong now!). I had no time to exercise and keto allows me to lose (now maintain) my weight from overweight/borderline obese to normal BMI just from eating whatever I can eat without having to crunch numbers and log my food in an app which was the thing that made me fail my previous calorie deficit diets. When I was starting out I had a plate of bacon every morning, coffee (decaf) with butter and coconut oil (bulletproof coffee; now I use MCT oil because coconut oil is disgusting tbh). Many veggies too. Lots and lots of Kimchi which honestly, I enjoy the flavor so much. I'm 5'3" and from 67 Kg at my highest (143 lbs) to 50 Kg at my lowest (110 lbs) the first 6 months and now maintained at 56 kg (123 lbs) after 3 years, suffice to say that it has done me wonders and now a big part of my insecurity with my body image was lifted too. People started treating me differently too which is a sad part of reality, but we do this for ourselves and to keep on living. you got this 💪
Wanna loose weight? Stop eating sugar and alcohol. Work out before breakfast. Cook your own food. Eat more veggies and fiber. Voila. Fasting is great though
@@loganwolv3393 I agree that low carb is the way to go for most people :) the body doesn't need to eat carbs, and so it's the most logical thing to cut from your diet. Not mixing carbs/sugar with fat is a great way to lose weight and reset your hormones. What time of day you workout is insignificant. What I mean is working out before eating breakfast will allow you to workout in a fasted state which is VERY beneficial. For the people who don't practice Intermittent Fasting (IF) it's a good easy rule to "workout before breakfast" and gives the same great benefit as me working out in a fasted state at 11 am before I break my fast with lunch at noon :D If you work shifts or practice a different version of IF you can change your hours around and still apply this to your schedule. One example could be that you sleep until 4pm, hit the gym, eat your breakfast at 6pm, and then work a night shift from 8pm to 8am. (you probably eat a "lunch" during your night shift, and a "dinner" before you go to bed)
Nah, fam, you're thinking too hard. Literally, just consume fewer calories. That's it. Nothing magic. It may not be healthy, depending on how it's done, but weight loss is the only thing that can happen
@@CharliMorganMusic That only works if you're litterarely eating too much. If you eat i guess normally and try to eat less you'll lose muscle. Fasting is better you lose fat but not muscle.
I've been practicing intermittent fasting for the last 5 months, my weight has dropped dramatically, is need less hydrocortisone, I no longer need metformin to control my diabetes and I can ride 50 miles no problem now. When I do eat it's all protein rich foods. Another good source of info is a couple of books by Dr. Jason Fung.
But that's the problem with getting a lot information from people on diets: When a person decides they need to get in better health they combine some form of diet with more exercise, so from a science standpoint it gets hard to tell whether the improved health comes from the diet or the exercise. BTW, great job on getting yourself healthy though. I good diet an exercise program is a lot better then bottles of meds.

As a veterinary student who recently was diagnosed with severe insulin resistance (although not yet progressing to Type II diabetes), thanks for this informative video!

Good keto is mostly veggies and fat and a little bit of meat
But that does not mean it can't be.
MEat + vegetables for flavor/side.
Not just for fibre. Vegetables have many important compounds and nutrients
This is a generally good video, except for the fact that you made it sound like keto is an all meat diet. You will eat more vegetables (mostly fibrous ones that have low net carbs) than you have in your entire life on keto.

Love seeing a good gun channel watching other channels i like.

Good for you! I started it just after Christmas last year when a buddy of mine sold it to me with, "You basically eat steak and sausage all the time. Most of your meals, or large portions them, are just going to be meat."
I've lost 45 pounds since then, and I eat far better now than I ever have since after I moved out of my parents. Later this year I'm going to start adding some basic exercise routines to my daily cycle and just watch the pounds bleed off.
Below 20 what? Kilograms?
Anas Takiyudi Grams. Below 50-60g of carbs is recommended to stay in ketosis. More than that and your body will still rely slightly on glucose rather than ketones.
Any studies on the long term effects of a ketogenic diet?
Yes, but not many. Until recently, an unbiased approach to low carb diets was like a career death sentence in the scientific community thanks more to dogma than anything like evidence.
There's no long term scientific studies on any diet, except the Standard high carb diet of the last 80 years, which shows increases in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and early death. The closest thing to a long term study of keto diets are the hundreds of generations of various tribes who thrived on it.

Whether be the us plains Indians or mongols, both subsisted on exclusive fatty meats and organ meats and were very physically impressive.
You can look at groups of people who for reasons like terrain, climate, and economics, have to eat such diet.
Case in point, modern Mongolians. Guess what, they die a lot from heart disease and their life span isn't all that long (their life expectancy is shorter than freaking North Korea)
How about places with quite long life span? Mediterranean diets with plenty of fish, cheese, vegetables, fruit, and wheat. Everything. Japanese diet: fermented soy, white rice, fish, vegetables, fruit, wheat. French people also live pretty long while drinking wine, eating cheese and baguette.

Well said, and very good point. It's highly glossed over how much keto does to reduce the hunger spikes people fall victim to.
I've been on Keto myself for the past two years. I was diagnosed with Menere's Disease, an inner ear disorder, that caused me to experience painful, frequent vertigo attacks. I was dizzy to the point of vomiting multiple times per day at random moments, it was misery.

Scientist always its anecdotal evidence even if there is hundreds of thousand of people who get better on keto

Agriculture (grains; high carb diets) has only been around for about 12,000 years, not long enough for humans to evolve to survive on this diet change.
im personally convinced that insulin resistance causes one to get fat as a way to protect the body, store it so it cant do harm. keto lowers your insulin resistance and corrects your body. insulin is the store fat signal, and with no store fat signals , basically weight just falls off without much effort.

Please people, eat as many greens as you want! That the best way to go when on KETO. Seems like most doctors forget that important note..

I think a research study for diabetic on keto would be interesting

If you don't want to label it as a diet that's fine.
@ ketogenic isnt generally a high protein diet and you need to work out your personal protein threshold
fasting + keto . very happy . lost 20 kg and kept most of it for 2 years now . relatively easy too
I've been low carb dieting not cutting down enough to maintain ketosis.
You don't think you could've replicated those results by just eating more veggies and cutting out sugar and processed foods?
Also, as an afterthought, I also, y'know, cut out sugar and processed foods. But that's unrelated to the success I attribute to my keto diet."
That's one of the reasons I can't do keto, actually: I tend not to get enough calories. The other reasons are mostly financial and moral.
Well actually protein isn't used as energy in the body, if the body can avoid it. It's used for rebuilding cells, muscle and so on. Energy for moving around and such, comes from fats or carbs.
Other 1000 calories or so comes from your body fat storage. And if you lean - from dietary fat.
Inuit people didn't get nutrient dense vegetables and they were fine. That was the whole point of the ketogenic diet.
You can get the same metabolic shift by intermittent fasting though, right?
Inuit and other indigenous people also ate the animals head to toe including bone marrow and organs and the animals were eating a wild diet unlike our commercial feed lot livestock
... and intermittent fasting on a non-ketogenic diet will not give you the same effects, as the carbs will drive your insulin up farther and keep it elevated longer, so you will need to fast longer between feeding windows to get the same results, where fasting is harder to begin with, as your body will be getting hangry as your blood sugar drops
@@d4rk0v3
Organ meats are very nutrient dense, something this video conveniently leaves out...
Once again thanks for a great video :)
what about fasting or intermittent fasting?
PyroMonkey generally speaking, there is no magic to eating nothing.
Keto doesn't help you loose weight.
Me: loses 70lbs over 1 year
They didn't say that. In fact, they openly said (at 7:00) that it has been shown to encourage weight loss, just not any more than other diets.
Of course it's wrong...it was literally designed to appease various food manufacturers. Go look up the history of it; it's obscene.
I eat lots of vegies on my keto diet. Its my staple. So even if I 'cheat' on a night out, I'm back into weight loss the next day. It works for me.
Veggies are good for you
Starvation mode may have long term health effects.
Glad you have vegetables in your diet if not you'll be screwed lol
Smh
Yes I've been thinking the same thing, theres obv unhealthy ways to do keto😂
Nice overview of the diet. The diet practically saved my life. Never been in such steady stable mood and almost gave up on ever losing weight until I tried it. Just the mental stability is enough to stay in it. I may be more carnivore now but still have the same effects 3 months on.
I used to work at a Children's Hospital. From what I remember, the kids who underwent bone marrow transplants had to eat a ketogenic diet for at least a couple weeks.
6:12 you skipped over your conclusion about sharpening of the mind after this part. This is the best thing about Keto in my opinion, after being on it for several months.
Or maybe it's just because you cut all the junk food out of your diet?
@@Lancor84 ? what does that have anything to do with it?
I felt sharpening after 3 weeks. Had to quit it though and it felt horrible after.

Curious about the longevity effects on the body if any. I guess it depends what food your eating for either diet type
Carnivore is keto but keto is not carnivore, its also very high in salads and fiber. Thumbnail is inaccurate.
No other diet does that
This show is pop science after all.
Bu but but, what about the vitamins? You brought it up, but never answered it...
On a true Keto diet you should eat at least 5 cups of vegetables per day. That brings in all the vitamins that meat and fat don't give you.
@@anon5119 U can get vitamin c from dairy. Raw milk ect. Stay away from store bought dairy products. Buy local fresh from a farmer.
He did briefly and partially at 7.22, but he should have talked about it more.
He mentioned that it goes away after a while which I have not found to be the case. My body is hungry less because ots already full of fat.
"there are many scientific authorities that support keto"
No, there isn't. A scientific authority is a health institution, some random doctor or expert isn't a health authority and there isn't a single health authority on the planet that would prescribe keto for anyone with the sole exception of people with seizures.

Not true, the cardiologist my parents have been seeing for a decade, Dr. Michael Schwarz in New Jersey, prescribed the keto diet for my uncle. Several years ago my mom actually demanded that my uncle visit Dr. Schwarz because she did not trust his former heart doctor.
Also, my uncle is definitely not following the keto diet, he just started eating less carbs and my mom and I could tell there was improvement.
It's real and its spectacular. Also, this allows the week willed such as myself to do intermittent fasting while on keto
3.5 years keto here, never going back. I highly recommend everyone try it. Im so glad Scishow didnt jump on the 80s fear bandwagon of "this diet will kill you", no it wont. I get blood work done every year, im the healthiest person to walk into my doctors office according to him.

This video didn’t advocate against Keto for long term weight loss. They say any diet you stick to in the long run, is good for weight loss.

Much lower carb content in the meat we're used to because it breaks down over time.
books.google.com/books?id=ltqvLpKHRWIC&lpg=PA396&ots=Sl1rzEjlLm&pg=PA399#v=onepage&q&f=false
Also, the vast majority of several Inuit populations exhibit a variant of the metabolic disorder CPT-1a deficiency known as “the Arctic variant” which seems to prevent ketosis.
Personal success, is a strong argument....

Wanna loose weight?
Stop eating sugar and alcohol.
Work out before breakfast.
Cook your own food.
Eat more veggies and fiber.
Voila.
Fasting is great though
And also cut down on carbohydrates. Or not eat them at all coz your body can produce them whenever it needs.
Also it's good to exercise as early as possible? or i can do it mid-day and in the evening too?
@@loganwolv3393 I agree that low carb is the way to go for most people :) the body doesn't need to eat carbs, and so it's the most logical thing to cut from your diet. Not mixing carbs/sugar with fat is a great way to lose weight and reset your hormones.
What time of day you workout is insignificant. What I mean is working out before eating breakfast will allow you to workout in a fasted state which is VERY beneficial. For the people who don't practice Intermittent Fasting (IF) it's a good easy rule to "workout before breakfast" and gives the same great benefit as me working out in a fasted state at 11 am before I break my fast with lunch at noon :D
If you work shifts or practice a different version of IF you can change your hours around and still apply this to your schedule.
