Hi Julian. Buddleia grow / self seed in cracks in old buildings etc. Purple flowers and quite tall. See them all over old railway infrastructure. That might be a good fix for you.

Thanks for the info, several others have suggested Buddleia so I think it will definitely be on the vegetation list.

+1 on the foliage over the blobs: there'd be tons of stuff growing over this after just a few years of being abandoned. You could also add moss streaks from overflowing guttering in places. There's often a lot of moss on the underside of arches too.

That’s a BEAUTY my viaduct is going live in two weeks two years to get the coastal scene right and it’s done editing at the moment the colours you achieved what I wanted but mine went the other way the PLUS side is the other bridge I did went perfect. The one thing that I will say was in your favour was yours was not CURVED. you have no idea how dumb it was for me to go for the curved option BUT the results are truly special. Stay tuned and look forward to more progress.

Dear Julien, thanks for the video and the bridge is a work of art. Your fingerprint, I smiled on that, like an artists signature. Well explained why you did it all assembled and why not photoshoped to make it look as one aged building. Moreover a very noteable landmark and impressive buildung structure. Almost feeling sorry for the bridge not being in use anymore. Apart from that you did good filming and that alone including postproduction takes up a lot of time you are spending on your virtiual visitors like me. Thank you so much for your well thought and nicely presented process of developing your wonderful layout. Best and happy holidays Albrecht

Hi Julian. Phew - I bet you're glad thats over! White streaks: It could be calcium but it could also be salt leeching out of the bricks or mortar. Fingerprints: As @alyro-ls1dv suggests - the artist's signature. Yes, I like the tree method of covering up the signature, but not actually removing it. Module: Did it fall, or was it pushed!? Awesome!

Great stuff Jules! I know you are annoyed at ‘the blobs’ but maybe just develop the darker patch to imply that area has fared worse than most other areas by ingress or something? That would certainly account for there being protruding weeds and growth accumulating there 🤔 The method you use is effective because it is simple and allows a more random, localised weathering than say using a spray gun, which I think can lead easily to over-weathering. The addition of thin layers adds to this as it gives depth 👍
Look forward to the next one mate 👍🍀🍻

the whitish staining could be salt peter leaching out of the bricks or staining from the lime mortar just an idea i could be wrong as my wife often tells me 😂 great look that weathering gives, patina thanks again for sharing your awesome skills. john

Hi Julian, an epic weathering. Have you thought of a walking track through the weeds & sleepers with some hikers & their dog on the redundant track bed? A reminder of your own hikes in the UK. As always, inspiring & enjoyable. Cheers. Dave 🙏

I do plan to incorporate the indication of a worn path where people have walked.

Great work Julian. Might want to add ammonium nitrate (saltpeter, white) residue on inside arches as well as algae/moss on lower part of inner arches (lintel of columns). Cheers Joachim

Dear Julian, beautiful how you’ve done the weathering on the arch viaduct. Definitely adds to the whole viewing experience! Do like the idea you talked about on using the water color pens to add the calcium deposits. Humbly think you could also add some rather significant calcite bleeds on several mortar lines, kind of as a ‘source’ for the deposits. On the fingerprints, think that calcite simulation might be a good idea to tone those areas down by following the mortar lines. After that you may be able to tone the bricks down with either a slightly lighter color.
Don’t really agree on what you said about airbrush weathering. It can be just as intricate as the powder weathering. Of course it may require a bit more exercising effort. Although, when one has found the weathering handwriting signature of his or her liking, it may just as well be a breeze to weather such a large structure with the airbrush. As for me, wouldn’t just leave it at that, don’t really know how easy it is to pin wash the printed brick texture, but definitely would try it out. Also a good technique for adding the calcite streaks.
Overall, love the entire series of the viaduct. Definitely a great visual addition to your layout and an excellent example of how the story of the railroad can be told beyond the visual borders of the layout’s footprint. Looking forward to seeing the next episode. Cheerio

Hello Julian. As an alternative to adding growth to hide the smudge you could add a hung scaffold with some tarpaulin covers or, perhaps an open scaffold with some workmen re-pointing/repairing some of the brickwork. One or two strategically placed items on the scaffold planks would help disguise the marks, eg. a bit of boarding etc lent up against the brickwork. This may add an extra little feature to your, already, excellent viaduct. Hope that will help you.

Hi Julian this is not a criticism more an observation hopefully as additional information to assist you, your parapet walls should have refuge areas built in to allow track workers etc safe areas to move into when trains are passing bear in mind these structures were built long before modern day health and safety rules. The refuge areas are big enough for 2/3 workers and set about every 20 yds (meters). Not that refuge areas are visible but are built into tunnels also.

    • @StationRoadModelRailway
      @StationRoadModelRailway  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I decided not to include refuges because I did see some viaduct examples where there were no refuges. These tended to be viaducts that appeared to have a wider trackbed than normal.

Use artistic licence to weather how you wish, wild shrubbery would be an advantage given thie time scale you suggest. Well put together video thanks

Good work Julian, I thought the viaduct looked good to begin with, but the weathering really puts it in a league of it’s own.

Very nice weathering. It does make a difference. I will have 8 viaducts running around the outer edge of the baseboard. It will be my version of the East Coast Main Line. There is a video here on TH-cam. Search for Yorkdale LNER. Martin. Thailand.

Great job. As for the top you could have gang lifting the track, crane, bogie wagons and shovels loading wagons.

I did consider a static display of track lifting equipment (crane and bolster wagons) but I'm wanting to stick with the stark simplicity of a disused relic.

Another problem with digital weathering (done before printing) is the viaduct is made of repeating pieces -- and you'll see the repeating pattern.

  • @alanwagstaff16

I'm not 100% sure but the white stripes is a build up of lime and other minerals which has come from water tuning trough the brick work . Anyway the viaduct looks very good . So dose the rest of the layout. Wish mine did . As just bare base boards at the moment.

regarding the disused line. Have you considered to make a little scene showing the lifting of the old track?
