      Dvd commentaries are probably the second biggest reason I collect stuff I love on physical media (much to wife's chagrin, when I immediately start rewatching something after we finish it at midnight...).
      Commentaries used to be the first, but finding out that Netflix (and now other streamers) gets rid of shows after selling off favorites that I thought I didn't need anymore due to online access made physical stuff even more of a priority. But yeah, insights into stuff you live just makes you love it more.

So while these episodes are a rewatch, if this podcast goes on long enough, I'll get to episodes that are new to me. I rewatched the whole series.recently. It's tied form my favorite series, Star Trek, which I watched as a kid in the1960s. When Smalville was airing, each year for my birthday my best friend bough me the previous season on DVD. Each time I went to watch the latest DVDs, I'd have to watch all the previous ones. The only one I didn't watch initially on DVD the following year was Season 10, because I couldn't stand the fact that the show had ended. I grieved the ending of Smallville even more than I grieved the ending of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and maybe as much as I did the ending of original Trek. I'm really enjoying watching the two of you react to watching your own show. It's a real treat!

    I liked "freak of the week" episodes but I didn't really categorize them as such. Rather, I saw them as episodes that explored how the meteor shower had far-reaching effects beyond JUST Clark arriving. It added a lot of nuance and sorrow to the history of Smallville's residents, even down to their family trees and DNA, a bit like the history of Maine in IT.

    I'm glad Allison was brought up a bit in this episode. Sadly, we all understand how terrible things went with her in the end, but Cloe is BY FAR my favorite character in Smallville. She's like Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings: Good hearted and loyal to a fault. Clark wouldn't have gotten far without Cloe. I hope you don't shy away from talking about her... at least in the context of the show.

I always wondered why they didn’t show more of Chloe and Oliver’s relationship bc their love scenes were ❤️. I guesss bc the show was about Clark. I was reading why green arrow never got his spin off. I def thought of ways to get around what the writers said but I do think Justin Hartley who played green arrow could have had that spin off that would have done realky well. I miss Chloe and Oliver

    This episode does an effective job in showing that Clark emerging powers came gradually through various circumstances, in this case it was in the form of a headache that trigger flashes. As the series progresses we'll see different types of ways he'd discover different power set and how he harness them effectively in life. Tom sold the performance with the way he portrayed his mannerism as Clark using his X-ray Vision. I really liked the scene between him and his parents teaching him to focus his vision like a telescope. John and Annette really had great onscreen chemistry portraying The Kent's.

    The reason meteor freaks become evil so fast is because the meteor rocks effect their judgement (similarly to how the red meteors effect Clark’s judgement). This is explained later on in the series and is brought up a couple times.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It depends on the person. Depends on whether it’s meteor in the water, soil, etc.
      Clark’s reaction is very different, as his body is reacting to the radiation, and changes him, due to his Kryptonian physiology.
      Humans are being mutated, not unlike how fallout from nuclear waste, or the people of Hiroshima, Nagasaki or Chernobyl, altered some people and there children for generations.

It seemed like something a nervous clark would do having a legit heart to heart with Lana. I think thats why they kept it

    I think they were showing that the “freaks” had underlying issues before they developed their powers. That’s why they didn’t focus on them being likeable people per se. They even say in the later seasons that the meteor rocks also impact the persons thoughts and that the power really gets to their head. (E.g When Pete and Lana got temporary powers). The powers emphasized issues the characters had that they tried to bury deep down. We also eventually meet meteor freaks that are actually not crazy LOL but then they wouldn’t be the type to draw attention to themselves and clark wouldn’t be saving others from them.

I really hope the podcast fulfills its purpose of commenting on more than 200 episodes of this great phenomenal series. I'm very excited about the idea and looking forward to finally getting to the episode that marked my life (and still marks today), and that made me stop liking the series, to start idolizing. I'm referring to season 3 episode 19 "Memoria". An episode that could be simple, but that revealed bombastic secrets about the past of Lex, Lionel, and also Clark. The episode ends with the huge difference in warmth and family love between Clark and Lex, to the tune of Evanescence's "My Immortal". I cried so much with this episode, I had dreams for several nights. Congratulations on your amazing performance. One of things I think that makes season 1 so interesting is that within it, almost all of the major storylines from all the other seasons are foreshadowed or seeds for those seasons are planted. Good examples of this would be level 3 at Luthor's plant and then in season 7 when it gets revealed that Lionel Luthor, the Queens, and Virgil Swan had formed the Veritas society for the Traveler (the first shot of Lionel Luthor is him reading a newspaper that states the tragic deaths of the Queens- which later will be revealed that he killed them right before so that he could get to the Traveler before them). This piece of information can make one go back to season and "re-interpret" almost all of Lionel Luthor's scenes with the possibility that he already suspects that Clark is the traveler (further evidenced by the adoption backstory episode where he helps pay for the Kents adoption of Clark).
