What would you do with zero consequences…
This week we explore that concept in Episode 14 of Smallville: ZERO. The guys revisit a Lex heavy, flashback frenzied episode that almost featured the very own Neil Patrick Harris.
Michael remembers the Lex hanging upside down scenes causing a bit of a health scare and the one scene that caused a stuntman to quit on the spot.
Tom remembers what it was like working with iconic guest stars who made appearances in the series and tricks of the trade in executing some of the Smallville oners.

Confession: I am in my 70s, have been a TV viewer since the early 1950s - and Smallville is my *all-time favorite* show. It 100% hits every note - acting, casting, writing, filming, music, not to mention its fundamental compassion and humanity. I've rewatched the series many times, and now I'm loving that you guys are sharing TalkVille with us.

Great episode, but ultimately shows one of Clarks greatest flaws... His Hypocrisy!
Clark very validly criticizes Chloe for sticking her nose in his business but constantly does it to other people (mainly lex) and will often lash out at those trying to help him, while he himself is constantly pushing his help on others. Once again love the episode and this podcast but any thoughts this on this character trait of Clarks?

In my opinion, it is very different for us (Smallville fans), since we've watched & re-watched the show (or even discussed show details, on-line, with friends/ family, etc.) than it is for Tom & Michael (Smallville actors), since they have watched a bit of the show here & there (Tom seems to have watched more than Michel has, but still I am sure Tom has not re-watched the whole show multiple times, over the years).
If you consider these differences, and also how long it has been since they were on the show, it is not at all surprising that some of the finer plot twists are not things they remember too clearly. We, as fans have had time & opportunities to "study" the show.
I do love it that they do not remember all the details. For the first time, they are watching the show (sort of) from a fans' point of view, which is exciting, fun & interesting to me, because they've got some back-stage stories to tell, yet they are watching the show (as a whole) for the "first time", from our point of view :)

Oh, and if any of you have not read the piece about a fan who had his pic taken with Erica D. and Tom W. at the New York Con, it is very moving. Apparently the guy had a rough childhood and Smallville was his main escape or distraction. He cried when Erica hugged him but was trying to be tough for Tom. Tom and Erica both went above and beyond. ... I am thankful for this podcast and Inside of You. I am excited to see Tom on shows again. And i do hope that Michael will get back out there too. I had forgotten just how many twists and turns were in this episode! I certainly forgot about Fry Cook Doppelganger. It's not on my list of episodes I'd use to introduce someone to the show, but it's definitely among my favorites. A solid 2 roses for all the great Lex stuff, Jonathan's Big Sad about dead cows and another one of my favorite scenes: Clark's adoption angst. Not knowing who his bio parents are and why he's not with them isn't something you have to be an alien future superhero to relate to, and I thought Tom really sold that scene. I wish there had been a little bit of episode shuffling so that this episode didn't follow so closely behind Leech. Because that episode really highlighted Clark's ability to lie - not just a little bit to protect himself but to lie viciously - and there's a part of me now that has to wonder just how much of his Chloe scene was truthful and how much was "protect the secret."

The effect of watching each episode each week for 10 years was why it's ingrained into my very soul. Sure I was learning from my parents my friends and the people I surrounded myself with but it's my time with Smallville that somehow watching each week(by the way there was a ton of skipped time in multiple weeks waiting for certain episodes) that I had to fill in the gaps of my life with actual life, and I would take the lessons I may have learned watching and try to apply them. Truly we could talk about so many ways that Smallville helped us grow as individuals. But the question brought up about it being on a streaming service these days made me realize I'm so happy it aired exactly when it did.

Talk Ville Tuesdays are just so nice to look forward to, thanks for another great episode. I agree 'Zero' is a great Smallville episode. Thank you for answering my question, I did think it looked and sounded like Michael was actually upside down, but he looked so bad, I hoped it was TV magic, because it just seemed cruel! I know it was a long time ago, but sometimes rewatching these episodes, I get nervous for the actors, just from what you guys have revealed so far about filming. We are only in season one, and so far Michael has been trapped under water and been made to hang upside down for a silly amount of time, I seriously wonder if Smallville left him with trauma? Also, when they were at Club Zero, I didn't think Lex was implying he didn't care that Amanda was engaged in a smug way, I heard it as he was reassuring her, that he was telling others she was spoken for... but then again I consider myself a good, honest person, but Lex? Maybe not so much, so maybe Tom and Ryan had a point. Come to think of it, I also accepted the final version of the club scene where Amanda fired the gun (she would have been so emotional), and this was always my problem with Lex, I always wanted to see the good in him, and then whenever he did something shady, I either didn't want to believe it or I was really bothered by it 🤣 My hope knows no bounds, even with villains! 😂

Dawn, I think you nailed it for the Rosenfangirls. In our minds, as we watched, Lex started out as good, and was fighting his demons and just kept getting thrown into such awful circumstances. I wanted to believe that he was innocently just good friends with Amanda, then learns her finance is cheating. So in order to protect her, he takes her to the club to witness for herself what's going on. Only then he learns the fury of a woman scorned could go so badly that she kills her fiance. Lex, then uses his influence to protect her, his genuine friend. But she later kills herself from the guilt of that night. I never believed Lex actually did the original shooting, but it was a horrible memory for him and he lost his good friend in the end just the same.

I always thought the Appletini was Amanda's drink of choice and Lex, trying to play the part of the best friend would join her in her favorite drink, even if he found it revolting, just to further that connection and impression that he was there for her.

True. I agreee. Also, in the historical context of when the show was made, I think Appletinis were a drink of choice. I'm pretty sure they were mentioned in SATC which is roughly the same era. 🍸
