The bosses and special events are the highlight of the game. Good job on those. I had alot of trouble differentiating the rats and remembering what they were/what was special about them. A codex with that info would have helped alot. Along that same vein, it gets very frustrating when it isn't clear what the effect of an action will be. Such as: will pulling this lever use up an action? Will it end your turn? It's very inconsistent. Some actions do and some don't.
XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen player here. I just wanna say that (at least in my game) the enemy often moves their cannon fooder first. The grunts go first. They eat the overwatch shots. Then the psychic aliens and commanders come to take over my guys and buff their aim. And if you play War Of The Chosen theres also Chosen who will appear on missions like Nemesis from Shadow Of War and mess up your mission. Theres also a lot of debuffs from global map. For example a guaranteed reinforcements as soon as things go loud. I was literally stuck for like 10 turns trying to take back control of the situation cause I was getting overrun by grunts dropping every turn on both my flanks. Also The Lost are a fun mechanic that also creates Horde Shooter mechanics within XCOM.
Love to see you're checking this out! I played it a bit when it came out and loved my time with it! Seems like the dev is really great. It's awesome to see someone who cares so much about their product.
It's worth noting when you come across additional characters later on in the game they *are* leveled up to be on par with the rest of your party and don't start at level 1. (With the downside being you cannot customize the points already spent.)
5:11 "you kind of have to move quickly..." "...i have never had to cannonball a map, unless there was an objective that said that there was a bomb that was going to go off in like ten turns..." 26:22 "double moving gets me into trouble again. unfortunately because this game is so balls to the wall you kinda have to double move."
Happy to see you revisit this, I didn't pick it up at launch as the devs said they'd be adding to it so I figured I'd give it some more time to cook. Nice to be getting another look at the progress they've made.
Hey Splat, you ever check out a roguelike called 'Brutal Orchestra'? I've been playing a bunch and it's awesome. Tons of meta progression, interesting gameplay mechanics, and a story that actually makes you want to do run after run. Anyway, had to mention it, I feel like it's an overlooked gem. Have a great one, brother.
He already did. And unfortunately it has some kind of forced LGBT trash in it. Very simple, linear, short, easy. Worth $5 maybe. Do you yoy remember what the other Redwall-like game is that he played before? Might have had a Slay the Spire map.
@@VndNvwYvvSvv Could you drop the link to the Splat video because I searched his video library before I posted the comment and there are no results. I heard it has gay rats is all. Maybe you are mistaken and it's some other YTber coverage you are thinking of.
It's insane how much time has passed since I found this channel. Or in just recent times...this video came out last year in November but it feels almost like a century, and considering so much can happen in the 3-4 months since this video released. Losing a job, losing more hearing, realizing you've worked the same dead end job for some gods forsaken reason for 8+ years and only ever came home to consume media and suffer financially. Don't get me wrong if I didn't have certain channels back in 2017-2019 things would have been very difficult for me but it does make me feel old and useless...I should have gone to school or worked better jobs I guess. Anyways I mostly found you Splat in 2020 and I hurt my hearing in 2021-2023 and then just last summer I lost the rest of my low-mid dB's due to my previous employer...man ruined my life for the last 5 years.
love the concept of x-com and slay the spire. The pixel art and palette is turning me off as there is nothing to easily focus on. It all just blends in like a spectrum game with too much detail. Just my opinion, love the idea of this.
I think the palette is fine. I think the issue is that the pixel characters are *very* pixel, without much detail. In other words, despite Songs of Conquest and this both *technically* being pixel games, one has put a lot more effort into their characters/units to ensure they are visually very distinct. Regardless, I will say that the concept's cool.
Same. I also hate when they label the game Xcom like and then give it scripted characters with abilities instead of random squaddies and gear deciding what they can and can't do. Ufo defence > gears of xcom.
@@TherealTenmanI The "Game-Like" tags are getting out of hand. Every game is rogue-like now as well. By the same qualifications used today, just about every 90s action game is a roguelike.
The 10 turns to leave before the bomb goes off thing is not only an optional thing but you can decide when the countdown starts. It gives you a good amount of time to get out. It gives you a ridiculous amount of time to get out of you wait to trigger it until after you clear the path ahead.
maybe they cahnged the name b/c they were worried verminfall was too close to vermintide? Like i am not saying i would agree with this, but considering bethesda sued notch over scrolls, its possible
I remember the scramble turn controversy. I hate the scramble turn. It's bullshit. It's literally a free first move for the AI. I mean, it's turn based for a reason. I take a turn, the AI takes a turn. The scramble turn is the AI getting a free turn for every unit. And it happens in the *middle* of the player turn. It's SO annoying.
dumb suggestion splattercat when you say something like "min maxing" maybe have a yt card with a real short video explaining what some gaming terminology for the people who have been out of gaming for a while or for the newbs??
Whilst I love you’re content - I have been watching for months and I still feel like an idiot every time you refer to a game as a 2AP 🤷♂️😂 Like who knows what that is??? At least explain it so I don’t feel stoopid
Shardpunk creator here - thanks for the coverage, Splat. You are a real treasure!❤
Thank you for making it!
Dude, it's a great game, I personally disagree on the scramble turn, but I love the way you worked around it.
PLEASE tone down the idle hyperventilating animations. It's truly awful to look at, every pixelart game looks the same because of them.
Why is the combo Gideon+support bot so broken?
The bosses and special events are the highlight of the game. Good job on those.

The whole second part of the video I was screaming at Splat for mentioning about grenade use and then not using them on the tight group in the doorway

The X in XCOM is for "extraterrestrial". This would be more of an SCOM, at least I assume the enemies are subterranean.
I mark this game as a diamond of a game. Something special and one of my best buys.
Title grabbed me! It is everything I want from a game.

Which splattercat games have you bought and loved recently ?
@@Bentzel75 Colony ship, Terminus, Beast. Probably even more, but that was off the top of my head.

Hell yeah. Always a good morning when our splat cat dwarfy boy puts out a new video
I watch every video he does and even went back to watch them a couple years ago. Always appreciate them.

Thanks for covering this game. Certainly looks like something I'll enjoy but I hadn't noticed it before. Going to give it a try.

Anyone else see "Active profile: FART" 🤣 🤣 splattercat Earned this like.
Tearing my hair out over all the missed opportunities to use explosive barrels or the barrel-carriers when the enemies were all lumped up 😅
FYI Shardpunk is on sale till 3/11 on steam. I’m excited to finally pick this title up.
Played this through way back when. I definitely recommend it if you can digest the graphics. Its a lot of fun.

This is like a 40k Mordheim.
So the name Shardpunk is exactly that. Technology runs on shards. Think of shards as Warpstone from Warhammer.
I'd pay good money for a game mode where I play as the ratmen trying to stop the filthy humans instead.

If there is one thing I hate, it's being forced to a time limit to complete things as mandatory and not optional.

Get good. Some of the best strat games I played use this feature. Xcom might have actually been a difficult game if they had done this.
And escort missions, lol
I've had covid twice. Each time my first test was negative. Have fun with that information!!
Have you tested for flu?
Keeps on talking about Enemy Unknown... but Enemy Within and XCOM 2 solve the overwatch issue by putting timed objectives on EVERY map.

Scavens doesn't exist, yes yes
I wonder why the footage was cut out where Splat splated his team :D
Bought it on your recommendation, enjoyed it, but kinda felt too short. Is there an open world take on this? i.e. Vermintide + XCOM + Battle Brothers?
Hmm 4:30 I wonder if there was a word in the game for that
Can we have Shartpunk based on that one monster from Jay and Silent Bob?
Scramble turns just seem to be a cheap mechanic to me. I prefer stuff like the interrupts of each enemy like Silent Storm.
With xcom being stinky pooh on the Steam Deck I'll be giving this a whirl to see if it fairs better. (Once I finish with Midnight Suns)
