But by rejecting Sony, they allowed their quality decrease, and now fucking Netflix kicked Disney's ass with a Pinnochio movie that's also a complete antithesis of Disney's Live Action take on Pinnochio... you can see a pattern here.
@@nicolasrestrepo6177 that's something i've been wishing for almost a decade and counting, Pixar is the greatest 3D animatiuon studio yet they've been holded down by Disney's restrictions and poor decisions. Pixar needs to leave Disney, yet they can't, and Disney keeps destroying that company from the inside.
I don’t think enough praise goes to the directors of Across the Spider-Verse, I was a little skeptical being that they were first-time Sony Animation directors, but they added a whole level of depth to each major aspect of the movie. Joaquim Dos Santos- Worked on Avatar, improved the action aspect. Kemp Powers- Worked on Soul, improved the quiet/conversational aspects Justin K. Thompson- Was a production designer on Into the Spider-Verse, improved the aesthetic aspects
Of all these three, I'm particularly impressed on the conversational aspects carried the audiences through the movie before any action and artistic stuff was displayed on screen. It really had a strong narrative. The fight scenes and artistic prowess mattered because of taking the time to develop its story.
I was so surprised at joaquim and lauren montgomery (i think she worked here?? Im not sure) making a good job here!! Since, you know,,, they butchered voltron,,,,
@@BuizelCream And there are TONS of examples of this! -There are the scenes where Gwen and George had their intense conversations, there’s tons of use of clashing colours. -Then you have the long-take/static-shot arguments between Miles and his parents, where they would let diegetic sound take over until the score comes in to compensate. I love the establishing shots of Jeff’s party where it would focus on people doing different stuff at a party rather than just showing them drinking and talking like in other movies, such as showing the food being made and kids playing trading card games. -There’s also the parts where Hobie’s does super sneaky moves because he’s practiced a lot through taking countless leaps of faith during his time in his world. He sneaks around and steals stuff for the dimensional watch, and when he silently tells Miles to use his palms while he is captured, he makes it looks like he’s trying to calm Miles down (which in a way, he is, but again, there’s a layer to Hobie’s actions). -I also love this common motif of alternate reincarnations of the Prowler being a guardian angel (or potentially devil depending on how Beyond’s story plays out) for Miles in some sort; in the first, it was Aaron 1610, who gave him a sense of self and in his dying words, gave him advice that would make Aunt May proud. In the second, it was Hobie (who was the OG Prowler in the comics), who gives him advice on his powers and challenges his perspectives on what he wants in life. There’s this looming sense of immersion in not just the situations like in Spider-Man 2, but in the dialogue and in the little details.
I grew up with open season and always remembered it fondly, only recently rewatching it and realizing how painfully hard it is to get through. Stellar video king 👑
Not going to lie, i probably won't ever going to touch the sequels made after the third film, i'm happy where it ended. i have realized they existed only because Dumbsville mentioned and reviewed every single one of them.
The only thing I fear is that the spiderverse trilogy/series will be the only thing they have after it’s complete. I really hope they’re able to thrive w/o solely relying on these films and that audiences can have something to look forward to in a post spiderverse world.
Based on other recent movies they’ve made like Mitchells vs the Machines, Wish Dragon and Vivo, I’m not at all worried, it’s in fact the animation studio I’m most excited for rn.
i got faith that the K-pop demon hunters film they got in development will be as successful as the Spider-Verse franchise. not only cause it's centered around the K-pop genre but because the premise sounds cool as hell
Every power fantasy be like: started with shit, made shit, got shit and is shit to then a 180 turn and become the giga chad no one expected. Ngl, exceeding expectations is way better than destroying it (aka disney)
It seems like after Into the Spider Verse, Sony has managed to finally make better movies lately. And the fact that they’re going for adult animated movies now, is pretty dang impressive! Especially due to the fact that they actually just recently made a show for adults (Agent Elvis)! So I’m pretty optimistic for Sony Animation’s future 😁
I felt that there are 2 sides of this studio: The ones who make animated movies just to have a quick buck and the others who make animated movies to fully embrace the medium with passion.
I always thought Sony was on a similar renaissance to Dreamworks. I think they're a bit underrated in that sense and i'd wish people put more attention to their movies outside of Spiderverse, The Mitchells vs The Machines is heavily forgotten and its so fun and emotional. And Wish Dragon and Vivo, while not masterpieces are still great!
You can tell from some of their earlier films like Surf's Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs that they want to have their own unique voice in the industry. It's just buried underneath the Smurfs films and The Emoji Movie.
@@redpanda6497 That is not Dreamworks, it's Universal, it was not their choice. Please don't spread misinformation even if it wasn't your objective and you didn't know about it.
I honestly don't think that DreamWorks is going through a "renaissance" right now just because of one good movie (their upcoming output of films... doesn't look super amazing tbh), but Sony has definitely redeemed itself with all the phenomenal things they've put out for the last few years. It's genuinely hard to believe how much they've improved. (Seriously, can people stop acting like DreamWorks is the second coming of christ in the animation industry just because of ONE really good movie-)
Couldn't agree more. I loved Puss in Boots: The Last Wish as well, but even I know that it's not the start of the "DreamWorks Renaissance". There's going to be more mediocre movies in production, but I'm sure there's also going to be some really great films too.
@@sonicfanboy3375 I'm guessing you mean *directly* before The Bad Guys, because DreamWorks has made a ton of good movies in the past. If you're talking about more or less everything between HTTYD 3 and Bad Guys (or including HTTYD 3 if you didn't like it), then yeah it's not that good lol
@@michaelstrong5383 Exactly. Mayyybe it could be argued that the positive reception of The Bad Guys and The Last Wish could influence DreamWorks' choices in their animated movies (correct me if I'm wrong but the guy who directed The Last Wish will also be in charge of Kung Fu Panda 4 so it'll probably be amazing lol) but that doesn't mean everything they'll make after Last Wish will be a masterpiece. Like you said, there will probably be a lot of mediocre stuff, but probably some incredible films as well Edit: So I was wrong about the Kung Fu Panda 4 thing, it won't be directed by the same guy who directed The Last Wish, oops
Yeah, we have Trolls 3 and an upcoming live action HTTYD. I don't know what to say about Teenage kraken. Outside of the Disney parody parts it seems just ok to me, but I'll give it some time. At least the art style is original. That's something.
It's crazy to think we live in a world where Disney is considered a low tier animation studio(I find the movies meh to good) and Sony/DreamWorks are held in such high regard
Just because Disney’s most recent movie (Strange Worlds) is mediocre doesn’t mean they are currently low tier. Encanto is a 9/10 movie that came out not long ago
Lord & Miller taking over the horrible bland and uninteresting Miles Morales story and adapting it for theaters completely changed how people view miles. They make him a extremely interesting understandable and relatable character as opposed to the blank slate that he was in the comics. The change was such a fantastic adaptation that when people think about miles they think about him from the movie not the comics
As much as I do have hopes for Disney's Wish and that its style does look lovely, it still feels significantly leaning towards the 'safe' style they've been relying on, despite its portion of 2D qualities. Hell, sometimes it feels like all they did was just put an outline filter you'd see in video games, like they did the bare minimum to diversify. It's rather telling and peculiar how Disney has insisted on keeping things safe to mixed results while other mainstream studios have been or starting to take risks, be the storytelling and/or visuals, and paying off both critically and financially. Not billion dollar levels like Frozen or Incredibles 2, but still considerable amounts that more films are in the works by these risking studios. Of course, damn good artists and writers and so on helped in that regard, but it's clear that in comparison, Disney is fading into this 'been there done that' atmosphere that's even starting to affect people's views on Pixar despite their own attempts to branch out, which is unfortunate.
FINALLY someone talks about how Wish looks like they just put a filter on it! I don't have anything against people who like how it looks, or against the animators who probably worked their asses off to make that style, but every single comment on the trailers is "Wow, the mix of 2D and 3D looks amazing!!" and it's like... Have you even seen Spider-Verse?? Or Mitchells Vs the Machines??? Do you actually KNOW what mixing 2D and 3D means?!??! But yeah Disney has definitely been not trying at all with how their animated films look lol. I don't doubt there are a lot of extremely talented animators working on their movies, but unless they try to be more creative and truly push the envelope of what an animated film can be, they'll be stuck in their mainstream look that is really starting to lose relevance
And it's not like Disney couldn't mix 2D and 3D animation together. Look at their short films like Paperman and Feast. Unfortunately, their excuse as to why they haven't made a feature film in that style is because they don't think it's ready for that length yet. Meanwhile, Sony just released their second Spider-Verse that pushes the envelope even more than the original did, and Disney is falling way behind with the trend.
@@michaelstrong5383 I always feel their questionable contempt towards traditional animation plays into it. Like, their last 2D animated features like Winnie the Pooh and Princess and the Frog were """conveniently""" put near Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows Part 2 and Avatar respectively and look how that turned out. Whether something like the 'female oriented' titles like 'Princess and the Frog' had something to do with it, I'll never know, but it's obvious Disney manufactured an excuse to stay away from 2D animation. Where Wish feels like Disney is pretty much saying, "Oh my god, fine, we'll give you your "precious" 2D animation again.🙄The way WE want it, though! 😃" They're pretty much trying to enforce that 2D is bad and that 3D should be permanent because I guess their 2000's flop era is still fresh in their minds.
@@dremcrak5647 There IS some effort there in Disney's animated films, definitely. Their films still look great and impressive in their own right, which the artists and animators themselves should be acclaimed for. The issue lies on Disney overall not wanting to step out of their comfort zone because they insist playing it safe will keep them afloat, which again led to more so mixed results than 100% guaranteed. And this issue applies to everything they've released, no less. Animated or not. Nowadays, 3D has become the new norm and isn't that special like in the 2000's, hence why Spiderverse, Mitchells, Puss in Boots, and Ninja Turtles stand out so much because they're willing to do something new with a medium that has gotten very 'average' at this point.
@@anthonyibarra8697 My thoughts exactly. If Disney wants to make people excited for their releases, they'd better start taking more risks with their animation styles. It's just that they likely won't do it because they're too afraid to not be the "safe, familiar studio that makes films inside people's comfort zones". (tbf companies like Illumination have the exact same problem but even worse lmao, but when other studios are making films that truly stand out among the crowd for their originality and creativity in the animation department, Disney should start, and be EXPECTED, to do better)

That’s so cool that Sony Animation has a slate for family animated filmed and adult animated films. It gets me so excited to see what could come from them and the creators they team up with.
I disagree with the Dreamworks point. Yeah, 2 movies doesn't mean they're going to head into a renaissance, but it does suggest a change. In the interviews for TLW and Bad guys, the creators talk about the support they received from the dreamworks execs, and suggest more movies of that quality are in DreamWorks' future. It seems like after several years, Universal has finally figured out what they want to do with DreamWorks, where they want to build up Dreamworks as a higher quality and more experimental studio, while Illumination is their cash cow.
I honestly cant articulate how much i love spiderverse. Its perfect in my eyes. And im forever grateful to Sony Animation not just for making it, but crucially not milking the shit out of it
We’re definitely entering to a Renaissance Era for Sony Pictures Animation. They are giving creators and artists more freedom with their projects. Both Spider-Verse movies and The Mitchells gives me a good hope for the future of this studio (Even though i already love Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs). Speaking about the future, i heard that Sony Pictures Animation will start investing into more PG-13 and R-Rated animated feature films. That’s pretty exciting. 2 of them will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky: Fixed and Black Knight. I don’t know much about Black Knight, but i heard that Fixed will be 2D animated! Finally a 2D western animated movie in theaters. With that in mind, i hope they give another chance to Mr. Tartakovsky to finish Popeye and Can You Imagine.
Sony Pictures Animation is one of the few animation studios whose future I'm very interested in seeing, which is more than I can say for Disney and, to some extent, Pixar these days.
Well i have a good and a bad news for you The good news Is that the popeye movie right now Is not anymore fully cancelled The bad news Is that Sony Will not make, It Will be made by a small studio If Tartakovsky Will direct It idk 乁( •_• )ㄏ
To be honest, Cloudy with a chance of meatballs is an excellent movie in my opinion. May I add that it still holds up a bit now. I remember it airing a lot on Cartoon Network back when I was a kid. Sure, Sony Pictures Animation has a reputation for releasing crap films, but they have released some good films here and there, but rarely. With Hotel Transylvania 1 and cloudy being two examples. And I still agree with the fact that the emoji movie is very, very VERY bad. And I say that as a guy who saw it on OPENING NIGHT in the movie theater. It was pretty much one big ol' ad, basically. Overall, there are a couple of EXCELLENT movies this studio made that I treasure and most that I absolutely hate. Gladly, Sony picture animation is somewhat out of that phase of making bad films, and lets just hope it stays out of it.
I remember loving the first Cloudy w/ a chance of meatballs movie so much that I dragged my family to see the second one, and then felt like I had to apologize for it afterwards. (Also, I finally watched Wish Dragon for the first time earlier this year, and I def wish I would have watched it sooner, it’s genuinely good)
Surfs Up was the first film in Sony where they let the filmakers have control over the general direction the movie was gonna have, like the best of it is just improvised dialogue This along with the fact they basically motion captured the *camera* is just mind blowing the effort into detail
A part of Goosebumps was actually filmed at my highschool! I recognized the French room, but when they left and turned a corner, there was a hallway that just doesn’t exist in the building.
Before I watch the vid, I wouldnt say they "improved overtime" they certainly made good to great films even before Spiderverse 1. I mean, the Cloudy franchise is GOATED and the first 2 Transylvania films are great as well as Pirates too. Its just that their catalogue is like Dreamworks, very mixed to where its not like with Disney or Pixar where there is a obvious decline
Agreed. Sony did make many great films in the past. However, most people are recognising their talent just now because they've released a *streak* of great movies. Also I'd disagree with the "obvious decline of Disney and Pixar" aspect, but the more I think about it you're honestly right, it's been kind of really evident how their movies are getting worse lmao
I'm an animation student and it's so interesting how if you ask current students what their dream studio is, nobody says disney or pixar at all. everyone is wanting to work at dreamworks and sony, and I'm sure even 5 years ago the answers would've been drastically different. just goes to show the quality difference in the studios nowadays
be careful there have been reports of the production of *Spider-man: across the spider-verse*, and it turns out that it was atrocious and it caused many animators to leave production on the film
To be honest, I even liked most of Sony Animation's movies, even before the revival period. They weren't gems of Pixar caliber (except Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf's up, Hotel Transylvania, and the Aardman co-productions), but they were pretty interesting, entertaining, and good movies. I admit that I even liked the first Open Season. It wasn't a hit, but a pretty decent movie, and I've never understood so much hate for it. The only thing I could fault them are the two lousy Smurf Live-Action movies, the weak sequels Open Season and Surf's Up on DVD, and the terrible Emoji Movie. I always thought they were pretty decent, but now it's really great to see the studio grow and start sweeping Disney under the rug. I can't wait to see what happens next.
While I do love the redemption arc Sony animation has going for them, it's still sad that they cancelled Pirates 2, Popeye and Medusa which would've been fun additions. Especially since some of them were cancelled due to creative differences. Though, I'm at least still glad they are gonna churn out more original adult animated movies soon. Maybe later on they can these cancelled projects another chance and give these artists more creative liberties.
I really liked the first spiderverse. But still did go to the theater not expecting that much from the sequel, "we already know the style now"... In the first 2 minutes that movie was 10x more creative with the animation medium than 90% of the rest of this industry. Not only using combination of 3D and 2D and flat comic-book like elements, but the scenary changing color to show time and emotion, it was fucking crazy. Best movie ive seen this year
Spiderverse inspiring things like Entergalactic and Puss in Boots 2 is another great byproduct of SPA’s resurgence. I hope they stay as creative as ever beyond Beyond the Spiderverse.
I think this quote perfectly describes how movies should be in the future. "Unless someone like you cares a who awful, nothing is gonna better, it's not".
While Arthur Christmas is much more Aardman than Sony, the animation in that movie was done entirely by Sony. And the head of story supervisor was Kris Pearn (who worked at Sony Animation). So I guess I should give some credit where credit is due.
I do say Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the ones who saved Sony Picture Animation with their Spider Verse franchise. Been a long time fan of their work since their first film Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.
On the one hand, gold (Arthur Christmas, Spider-Verse 1&2, Cloudy 1&2, Surf's Up, Pirates, Hotel Transylvania). On the other, painful, agonizing failure (Emoji Movie, Smurfs 1&2, Open Season)!
Sony really went from being butt of the joke in the animation industry to trailblazing the current landscape after Spiderverse. Tell me a better underdog story.
Sony didn't forgive Disney for giving them the short end of the stick with the Spiderman deal renewal, so they used that anger to destroy their animation studios by releasing the best animated film in recent years using Spiderman. Little did they knew that Disney didn't care about animation so they won't care about being dethroned in that department.
I still remember this 1 quote from Schaffrillas after being burned out by Disney(he said this before Puss in boots 2 btw): The future of animation is now in the hands of Laika, Netflix and even Sony. Look for the projects theyre putting out”
Sony making the Emoji movie one year and making Spiderverse the next year is... becoming an old joke, Lord Miller is one of the greatest artists in animation and Spiderverse is their peak project
Killer analysis, man. I subbed for this! The textbook example of an insane glow up, and you guide us through it in a super entertaining and introspective manner. I'm glad i found this, because this was so fun!!
I tell you, many people will choose animation as a career thanks to Spiderverse, it's amazing how one of the worst studios that ever graced the Earth managed to create an entire animation revoltion that, frankly, made me excited for the future of this medium.
This studio's output is a really wide spectrum of quality and I think it's so funny how the studio that makes the Spider-Verse movies also made The Emoji Movie
interesting bonus: Sony Pictures Animation's work lately has been so game-changing that they were even going to have their toes dipped into the gaming industry in collaboration with PlayStation Studios! Apparently they were going to work with game studio PixelOpus for an untitled project, it was going to be a PS5 exclusive before Sony Interactive shut down PixelOpus in favor of dishing more huge blockbuster titles. To imagine what SPA could've brought to the table with this would be insane, especially when PixelOpus' previous game Concrete Genie was already so beautiful visually!
Ngl bro Emoji Movie to Spider- Verse series is the craziest glow up in history like sun jin woo level glow up, this stuff is actually insane just shows how far giving your team actual creative control to make a great story rather than just something for getting money cause little kids will watch it, will take the movie, cause a movie with no soul will be infinitely worse than a normal movie where the team had actual fun and enjoyed making the film
I have always love Arthur Christmas and its sad it doesn't get the attetion it deserves. Its an awesome film that genuinly makes you laugh and taught little kids a lesson. And we can say it "breaks" the stereotype of an animated christmas movie.
The fact that we are living in a day and age where DreamWorks, Universal, and Sony are all kicking Disney’s ass in the box office at the same time is still mind blowing… Mickey Mouse rn: “WE’RE F%@$ING LOSING!!!”
Nice video! I think to fully understand Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) you also need to consider Sony Pictures Entertainment as a whole and how it's structured. Under the latter there's also Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), which basically is a production house that produces most of SPA's high budget films, as well as do work for other clients (WB, Netflix, etc.) And while Sony Pictures Animation is a known commodety now, it's different than studios like Dreamworks, Disney and Pixar in that they don't make their movies in-house. Once you start to look into it, it becomes even more interesting. For example, while The Star, Wish Dragon and Into The Spider-Verse are all technically SPA films, out of these three only Into The Spider-Verse was made at Sony Pictures Imageworks (that includes look development, animation exploration, lighting and post-production, to name a few). As another example, the people that made the Spider-Verse films and The Mitchels vs The Machines, also made movies for other clients such as Storks, The Sea Beast, Small Foot and others. Also, both Angry Birds movies were made by Imageworks while technically belonging to different clients. It's something that most often goes unnoticed, who actually produced the film, and gets brushed off by who owns/distributes the films.
I love that American animation is making a comeback. We were truly in the dark ages for a bit there. Sony and Dreamworks dropping bangers, and even WB/DC hit a home run with the adult orientated Harley Quinn Animated Series, which I've been hearing that they are planning on expanding with spinoffs.
Probably the best redemption from an animation studio since..........Disney with the renaissance era......the state Sony was before Spiderverse was nearly in the trash, but after Spiderman.......they are the ones to influence EVERYONE,
For me, not just Sony animations themselves but Sony themselves as well, back then my final straw was them firing my boy Andrew Garfield and giving us the 2016 Ghostbusters excuse. However, as we move on towards the future, after spider verse redeemed their animation arc and Ghostbusters afterlife I'm starting to restore my faith in Sony big time. If they make The Amazing Spider-Man 3 then I will forgive them for life
Sometimes I gotta wonder, is this really Sony’s redemption, or just lord and miller being utterly incredible, in my opinion every other film Sony has made, other than surfs up, has been average to below average and that hasn’t changed at all
Not only did I grow up with open season, but it was by far one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid and one my dad would even watch with me and my brother (he hates animated kid movies lmao) so it’ll always be near and dear to my heart
I will never forgive Sony for dropping that Popeye movie, but they allowing genndy to animate adult animated films and after his work on primal, samurai jack, and his newest show unicorn warriors enteral I can say I’m really excited to see what he does with fixed, and black knight.
Fun fact about Sony Pictures Animation: I know Sony Animation also made a streaming deal with Netflix in 2014 before the actual Netflix contract went into the public in April of 2021 that same month Sony announced a new streaming deal with Disney+ for having Spider-Man films (including Hotel Transylvania, Jumanji, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, etc) once the Sony titles expire on Netflix for USA streaming rights, they’ll go to Disney+/Hulu and Disney’s linear TV networks
We can all agree that Sony as of recently is the definition of redemption. It’s insane that Sony made the worst and Best animated movies I’ve ever seen
As the world's biggest surfs up fan, I had to mentally torture my brain into forgetting wave mania existed for a while. I can look at the cover now without throwing up, but I refuse to even let someone else offer watching it
The only good thing about the Emoji Movie was that it was the movie that made Sony go, "Oh no. We hecked up." So they redeemed themselves by hiring Kristine Belson as their new CEO and made themselves rise to the top by releasing "Into the Spider-Verse." And they were like, "Wait, Spider-Verse can't be our only good film. We still need to be better." So they only hired incredibly talented animators, storytellers, and filmmakers who are so passionate about their projects, so that led the company to make even better films like "The Mitchells VS The Machines," "Wish Dragon," and "Vivo." And now that they finally released "Across the Spider-Verse," the company went from heading to its downfall to stealing Disney's crown, and that's a good thing. Ever since Kristine Belson took over as CEO of the studio, Sony Animation is in a much better place now. They're taking more risks, they're trying new things (like how they accepted "Vivo" because they never did a movie musical before, and they trusted Lin-Manuel Miranda to make it good), and they literally hired a talented 14-year-old boy to animate the Lego dimension in "Across the Spider-Verse." THAT'S INSANE. Let's hope Sony can put the past behind them and stay the way they are right now.
I still remember being extremely baffled when Spiderverse came out, because like many other people, I couldn't believe how they went from producing the Emoji movie to doing once of the best western animated films and having an animation that was like nothing we had ever seen before. I'm glad it paid off because with Disney thinking Live Action remakes are a good idea (which makes their direct to DVD sequels look creative and I cannot believe I said that,) Pixar trying to play safe, and everyone talking about AI and how to use it; is nice to have Sony actually letting their creators have enough freedom to produce this amazing movies. The sad part is that this probably happened because Sony as an animation studio wasn't doing well so experimenting made sense since they were trying to find something to stick; and is the exact reason why Disney despite having so many IPs and money are refusing to do anything new, because they would rather use their pre-establish formula than try to do anything new.
Sony Animation going from the crappy emoji movie to Into the Spider-verse and Across the Spider-verse is honestly the perfect definition of an anime redemption arc. I'm glad that ITSV is helping revolutionize and innovate the animation industry. It's because of this film that inspired Puss in Boots: Last Wish and the upcoming TMNT Mutant Mayhem(I hope it's good).
I remembering not giving a flying fuck about into the spider verse cause I thought it was gonna be shit cause of the emoji movie, literally the only reason I watched it was cause there it was a day where there was nothing to do in my health class and I somehow turned out to be one of the best animated movies I’ve ever seen
You forgot that Into The Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animation Feature at 2019 Oscar beating the record of Disney/Pixar which won the category from 2012-2018
Sony’s comeback in the animation scene is nearly as prolific as No Man Sky’s comeback to the Boston Red Sox overcoming a 3-0 deficit to stun the New York Yankees.

This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched and you bleeping out the f bomb with the beginning of the buddy holly riff made me laugh and realize I might have a new subscription.
I think it would be funny if Sony releases Open Season 5, but actually puts elaborate attention to detail when it comes to the animation, story, etc, and it blows everyone's expectations out of the water

Kemp Powers- Worked on Soul, improved the quiet/conversational aspects
Justin K.
Since, you know,,, they butchered voltron,,,,
True, Joaquim is already creating good stuff since the 00s.
@@rinina First off, Lauren’s gonna direct the Spider-Gwen spinoff.
And second, they’re working on directing roles, no problem there.
@@BuizelCream
And there are TONS of examples of this!

And then there was the Mitchell's vs the machines then may other movies
Fundraiser? Did it even broke even?
The only thing I fear is that the spiderverse trilogy/series will be the only thing they have after it’s complete. I really hope they’re able to thrive w/o solely relying on these films and that audiences can have something to look forward to in a post spiderverse world.
Based on other recent movies they’ve made like Mitchells vs the Machines, Wish Dragon and Vivo, I’m not at all worried, it’s in fact the animation studio I’m most excited for rn.
If you look at their upcoming movies that are in the works right now, they have a pretty promising future after the Spider-Verse trilogy.
The video literally said they have Adult animated movies in the works, so they will likely be fine after Spider-verse
I don't think so, Mitchells vs the Machines was amazing. It should have won that oscar
i got faith that the K-pop demon hunters film they got in development will be as successful as the Spider-Verse franchise. not only cause it's centered around the K-pop genre but because the premise sounds cool as hell
remember this is the same company that made one of the best animated movies of all time and its same company who made the abysmal emoji movie

Wait Sony Animation made Agent Elvis? Surprised I didn't know that lmao

No

I felt that there are 2 sides of this studio: The ones who make animated movies just to have a quick buck and the others who make animated movies to fully embrace the medium with passion.
Two Words
Lord Miller
And it happened at one year!
And now Dreamworks is diving into the live action remakes... Sony is our only hope now.
Not going to lie the MvM movie was over hyped when it came out. I don't think it's that good of a movie if I'm honest.
@@dragonslayermasterornstein83 I respectfully disagree.

The Spider-Verse franchise is so amazing that we don't deserve it
Straight facts. I actually can’t believe that I am able to watch movies so beautiful.
I’ve never seen them but I’m glad people hold them so highly.
Yeah most movies before The Bad Guys weren't that good
Couldn't agree more.
Like you said, there will probably be a lot of mediocre stuff, but probably some incredible films as well
Edit: So I was wrong about the Kung Fu Panda 4 thing, it won't be directed by the same guy who directed The Last Wish, oops
Yeah, we have Trolls 3 and an upcoming live action HTTYD. I don't know what to say about Teenage kraken. Outside of the Disney parody parts it seems just ok to me, but I'll give it some time. At least the art style is original. That's something.
I think that the reason Sony has succeeded is because they toke risks, unlike Disney currently who’s only doing what’s safe and it’s failing
It's crazy to think we live in a world where Disney is considered a low tier animation studio(I find the movies meh to good) and Sony/DreamWorks are held in such high regard
Just because Disney’s most recent movie (Strange Worlds) is mediocre doesn’t mean they are currently low tier.

@@adamgrant6327 Yeah, the ending was so rushed.
They're pretty much trying to enforce that 2D is bad and that 3D should be permanent because I guess their 2000's flop era is still fresh in their minds.

Glad to see Surf's Up gaining more attention, one of the more underrated animated movies by Sony and the whole medium.

Tl:dr = Sony animations is a wild card
I remember loving the first Cloudy w/ a chance of meatballs movie so much that I dragged my family to see the second one, and then felt like I had to apologize for it afterwards. (Also, I finally watched Wish Dragon for the first time earlier this year, and I def wish I would have watched it sooner, it’s genuinely good)
Tf you talking about second goes hard
When spider-verse first released I saw it in theaters and didn’t think much of it but now I’m realizing how amazing it really is
I also watched it when it first released in theaters, and I absolutely loved it. The Spider-Verse trilogy is one of my favorites
I was mind blown when I watched it
Damn. Sony really went on an arc like Miles in the first SpiderVerse.
The Disaster that is the Emoji Movie was the wake up call that Sony needed in order to step up it's game and boy have they done so.
Surfs Up was the first film in Sony where they let the filmakers have control over the general direction the movie was gonna have, like the best of it is just improvised dialogue
This along with the fact they basically motion captured the *camera* is just mind blowing the effort into detail
What blows my mind is that Sony Animation has 2 spiderverse movies under their belt and still hasn’t wiped away the stain of the emoji movie is insane
We Will Just pretend that the emoji movie never existed
They most definitely have I think you just refuse to let it go which is quite odd
Ngl I think it’s probably just a scar now
A part of Goosebumps was actually filmed at my highschool! I recognized the French room, but when they left and turned a corner, there was a hallway that just doesn’t exist in the building.
Ooh, cool!
Best movie ive seen this year
Your videos and your humor make my day so much better
In this time of original ideas being rejected and animation not being respected as much as it should, we need Sony more than ever.
10:48 If only Cartoonshi could see what would happen on September 4, 2024...
Spiderverse inspiring things like Entergalactic and Puss in Boots 2 is another great byproduct of SPA’s resurgence. I hope they stay as creative as ever beyond Beyond the Spiderverse.
Damn, I don’t remember being so early to another classic Cartoonshiシ video.
I still believe that every sludge of a movie like the Emoji movie was a fundraiser for Spider-verse
I think this quote perfectly describes how movies should be in the future.
"Unless someone like you cares a who awful, nothing is gonna better, it's not".
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better… it's not." -Dr. Seuss, _The Lorax_
While Arthur Christmas is much more Aardman than Sony, the animation in that movie was done entirely by Sony. And the head of story supervisor was Kris Pearn (who worked at Sony Animation). So I guess I should give some credit where credit is due.
Actually didn't know that I've just thought for years that it wasn't the case lol my bad. Should've looked further into that.
I do say Phil Lord and Chris Miller were the ones who saved Sony Picture Animation with their Spider Verse franchise. Been a long time fan of their work since their first film Cloudy with a chance of meatballs.
FINALLY, someone agrees that cloudy with a chance of meatballs is awseome
Look for the projects theyre putting out”
Sony pictures has the biggest film studio glow up I’ve ever seen
This studio really went from The Emoji Movie to one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces in the history of animation.
The fact that we are living in a day and age where DreamWorks, Universal, and Sony are all kicking Disney’s ass in the box office at the same time is still mind blowing…
Mickey Mouse rn: “WE’RE F%@$ING LOSING!!!”
I grew up and loved Open Season. I only liked the first one though.
Nice video! I think to fully understand Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) you also need to consider Sony Pictures Entertainment as a whole and how it's structured. Under the latter there's also Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), which basically is a production house that produces most of SPA's high budget films, as well as do work for other clients (WB, Netflix, etc.)
And while Sony Pictures Animation is a known commodety now, it's different than studios like Dreamworks, Disney and Pixar in that they don't make their movies in-house.
You KNOW it's gonna be a good day when Cartoonshi uploads 🙏
Arthur Christmas became an instant "watch it every Christmas" movie in my family
Probably the best redemption from an animation studio since..........Disney with the renaissance era......the state Sony was before Spiderverse was nearly in the trash, but after Spiderman.......they are the ones to influence EVERYONE,
Crazy how DreamWorks and Sony got their glow ups while Disney is falling off.
Amazing video man. It's always nice for me to see people I follow mention how great Surf's Up is. Keep up the good work
I will never forgive Sony for dropping that Popeye movie, but they allowing genndy to animate adult animated films and after his work on primal, samurai jack, and his newest show unicorn warriors enteral I can say I’m really excited to see what he does with fixed, and black knight.
Spider-Verse & The Mitchells saved Sony Pictures Animation plus I’m excited to see them bring back adult animation!
that weezer riff as the censor sound punched me in the face oh my god
The scene of Hotel Translevania where Drax twists his nipples is still the best scene to ever be created on TV. Prove me wrong.
At least Spiderverse into the Spiderverse, Surf's Up, Arthur Christmas, Pirates Adventures with Scientists were pretty good
Still wish we got something out of The Popeye Movie.
I think open season's constant return is so that when they do something bad you see less of the flaws with the next thing
Remember
They are making a Harold and purple crayons movie🥶😰😥🤭😵💫😵🤯😭!
Sony(not only animation scene) went from releasing abomination like Morbius to Spider-verse was jaw dropping ngl
if Sony can keep this good thing going, They need to make a animated Goosebumps movie on the same artstyle as the covers of the books.
It's because of this film that inspired Puss in Boots: Last Wish and the upcoming TMNT Mutant Mayhem(I hope it's good).
damn back to back video
Hotel transylvania and cloudy with a chance of meat balls have a special place in my heart because they are my childhood 🫶
Disney has been dethroned and now we are getting films that aren’t in the Disney Pixar art style anymore and I am here for it.
If you told me a few years ago Sony Animation would be one of the leading studios in animation, I would’ve thought you were talking crazy. To see them where they are now is just… wonderful
After the release of Across The SpiderVerse I’d have to say Sony Animation has made some of the best animated films of all time
This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched and you bleeping out the f bomb with the beginning of the buddy holly riff made me laugh and realize I might have a new subscription.
I think it would be funny if Sony releases Open Season 5, but actually puts elaborate attention to detail when it comes to the animation, story, etc, and it blows everyone's expectations out of the water
I doubt it 😂
Really good video, would love to see the same analysis for other studios.., or maybe any foreign movie studios..
Please
I’m glad Sony has learned their lesson. No more movies based on trends or cringey live action adaptations.
We are getting a live action Harold and crayons movie this year 😥😰
