They were great when they came out. It was the wackiness of an adult swim show without getting uncomfortable. It was also exciting to see because I had been a fan of Roiland for a few years.
I think the “you need to be smart to understand Rick and Morty” crap happened in season 3, when Roiland stopped a lot of his involvement anyway, and the writers seemed to lean into that.

I really liked S1E1's Rick. He looked like he wasn't in control half of the time and that added tension because you wouldn't automatically assume he'd win.
The scene when Morty's freaking out and Rick is just standing there with drool coming out of his mouth to me is still the funniest in the show.

Rick and Morty was too good, too fast and was given an unbearable amount of expectations to live up too. It grew self conscious, self serious and self loathing. It now oscillates between pandering to watchers and actively antagonizing them, spiteful over how much appealing to them still matters to it.

The hatred for serialization really upsets me. Because they're the perfect show to be semi serialized. You could have your self-contained adventure of the week that isn't related to any of the other adventures. But have the effects of that adventure continue on to future episodes. And reveal small bits about the characters past in each adventure.

    • @cursedimageseveryday5559

To be honest I actually think this so called hatred for serialization is an actuall part of the story not just a gag that writters keeps telling us so we don't demand serious plot. Rick somehow knows he is in a show.

@@LunaMinuna I hate what they’ve done with Jerry’s character. He used to be a somewhat dimwitted yet good guy that was insecure about his place in the universe.
He cared for Morty and Summer’s well-being and hated how much Rick tried to manipulate them into joining him on dangerous misadventures. And he used to be one of the few characters in the show that actually stood up to Rick despite his concerns being drowned out by deaf ears.
In the season 2 finale, he was also the one person that managed to get through to Rick which is what caused him to turn himself into the government in order to ensure the safety of Jerry, Beth, Morty, and Summer.
Yet season 3 (like the video pointed out) completely ignores this and reverts everyone back to worse versions of their former selves, only with little to no redeeming qualities.

I miss the Rick and Morty that were fleshed out in season one. Rick, being smart but not too bright, trying to connect with his grandson, but tripping over himself. It left lots of room for fun scenarios, character development, and actual risk. I hate how the character arcs all just end in "they're a stoic badass" by the end of the episode. Now everyone is "badass and cynical" and there's no charm.

I just been rewatching seasons 1-3, I hated the fan base at the time but the show was just too good, miss those days.
And to be fair, even with all the character arcs in the recent seasons, I feel like if they brought out episodes a little more frequently and with not as long of a break between seasons, the audience wouldn’t hold them accountable for a couple bad episodes, but because we only get like 10 episodes then wait for 2 years, all we can remember is how ass it was 2 years ago and forget about all the great stuff about the show.

@@CJT49 it really isn't. Half the latest season was episodes that all ended with me thinking to myself "I can skip those whenever I get around to rewatching the series"
Also, pretty sure pointing out that a show's not as good as it used to be isn't "counterculture" or "being contrarian"
It's pretty much the norm for shows to decline, especially as the original creative force either gets burned out, spread themselves thin with other projects, gives too much control to new writers, and/or suffers too much studio interference.

    • @CJT49
      @CJT49 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@InfernosReaper it's not that you are pointing out it's bad, it's the fact the show started getting very mainstream, and we are seeing an influx of these "show fell off" videos, with some extremely nitpicky and unnecessary complaints. Yes the newest season had some of the worst episodes, but they also had some of their best. They might be inconsistent with how good their episodes are. But I guess it's just easier to say the whole season is bad instead of just a few particular episodes. One could point out just as many problems with the earlier seasons, but I guess it's more about complaining for the sake of bias at this point.

@King Henry V Daria's cynicism wasn't meant to be aspirational. Everyone around her was a counterpoint to her sarcasm and lack of social skills. In fact, her cynicism was regularly cited as a negative quality. At the same time she was smart, empathetic and grew through the series to appreciate those around her as she matured. In other words, she was a teen, and Jane in particular was the softer edge that made the dynamic, and by extension the show, work. Her hating everything wasn't talking down to people for liking those things because she wasn't seen as "better" for not liking the same. That's why even the "bad" characters like the Fashion Club had their positive points sometimes.
R&M is the opposite of that. There isn't really any growth, because the more the family is exposed to Rick and his world, the more jaded and condescending they become. They adjust to a universe where they are only out for themselves. Summer might be the best example of that mentality. And it is presented as a good thing in a way because that makes them smarter and more capable, with the ability to live on as each new reality falls without consequence to the core family. It is Daria if Daria's cynical assholishness was celebrated. Only ironically, in a way that pointed to the viewer and sneered.

A big problem with me is that some of the jokes fall flat because the show creators are pretty pedantic and political but not in a funny way. For example, this is their own public opinions btw, they think it's funny how Jerry becomes good at survival because he is homeless, and for them survival in the wilderness is the same as being homeless .... no they weren't joking.
Did someone found the feminist jokes in the horse sperm episode funny ? Because I didn't. I pretty much never saw someone dismissing a women's opinion just because they are women. And it's so dumb when some of the most powerful figures in history have been women.
Then, in the last episode of seaon five, the creators went on a rant in the credits about how the whole episode was a critique of capitalism and how all the system needs to be left behind ( luckily the episode kind of works without the dumb analogy because the analogy fails completely ). The fun thing is, nothing is stopping anyone from leaving capitalism behind. Anyone can found a city through voluntary work and have a public ownership of the means of production. No one does it because it always fails.

Something I noticed when watching Season 5 is that the characters reference and mention previous episodes and moments in the series way more than usual, if done at all, so that the show's world gives off the impression that those moments did indeed happen, instead of feeling like Family Guy does where each episode just happens and its world doesn't evolve from that episode, making it more self-contained.
The problem in doing is that it clashes the two methods of episodic creation used in Rick & Morty where an episode is either a solo episode dedicated to being "funny goofy Rick & Morty adventure" or "this episode is one of many that when combined will create a serialized story so that our show actually has a plot".

I guess, for "adults", it's much more shocking to see a show that honestly portrays issues of toxic dynamics of people unable to maintain relationships, substance abuse, awkward sex and dysfunctional families; to see our secrets and failures applied on other characters presented from cruelly direct perspective. It's nothing anyone is proud of and everyone keeps it to themselves.
People know about reproductive organs since young age - everyone learns at different pace but it doesn't take 18 years for teenager to know about bodily fluids. This kind of humour on TV has shocking value to teenagers since they haven't seen anything like that on Bob the Builder. It takes special talent to write such jokes that work and have some substance behind them.

One thing I remember very distinctly, when season 3 was being shown off, was that people shat on the new writers for the issues with it. It was toxic, shitty, and a lot petty, but we got a lot of important info out of it. Namely, that most of the material in the show is created in the writer's room collaboratively. This is something that's been emphasized again and again.
What I think happened was that, in the jump from season 2 to 3, the perspective of (and size of) the writing room had shifted. It wasn't a small group of writers tossing fun ideas to each other with different perspectives and ideas, it became a larger room filled with people who, while they still all had their own interpretations, now had to prove it to that many more people. I don't think this in of itself is an issue, it can lead to more varied dynamics and situations.
What does make it an issue though, is if there's a power imbalance in that.
If a showrunner + writer has a small group of writing partners they collab with, there's not much shame in shutting down bad ideas. If a showrunner + writer has a full room of writers, suddenly it becomes harder to tell them no.
Regardless of how good a writer is, having that one perspective dominate the discussion can create all sorts of issues, especially in a show like Rick and Morty.
And I think we do have evidence to support this. Dan Harmon has gone on plenty of times about his opinions on storytelling, and his preferences towards extreme nihilist comedy over character writing. Do some people enjoy that style of writing? Absolutely, but it's a very hard sell when so much of the show needs a balance, at least as it's been established. (Also, while I do cite Dan Harmon specifically for this, there's a chance many of the other writers very much believe the same, and it's not a power balance issue, but the remaining fault still remains)
With that interpretation also comes a slew of new questions, namely "why do some episodes still focus on the character moments, while others mock it." (also, from here on I'm speculating on top of speculations, please take it with a grain of salt the size of Texas)
I think that the remaining character moments in Rick and Morty are done by specific writers, trying to bargain their ideas into the show. Whether that be because Dan's vision dominates it, or many of the writer's share the same vision, I think that specific writer or writers want to sneak their own character moments into the show with the concession of "wouldn't it be funny if..."
My reasoning for this is that Ricklantis Mixup is in season 3.
"Wouldn't it be funny if... a whole episode was dedicated to an artful exploration of a new society of Rick and Morty's, and we had no jokes the entire time."
The episode is so unprecedented that I cannot believe for a second it was created unironically. I think that one of the writers' had a genuine passion for the world, presented it, and justified it's existence by its irony.
"Wouldn't it be funny if... we made an episode that was genuinely beautiful as standalone art.
and then showed that it didn't matter."
Every time a character says something of value, or does something of value, I always put it into this context.
"Oh, the two Beths both exist and did something in this episode? Imagine how lame it would be if we followed this up unclimactically. That'd definitely show it didn't matter." "What if we teased a resurrected bird person, but we took away all the dramatic stakes from it just to make it less satisfying, gotta make sure it doesn't actually matter in the long term." "What if we changed the entire dynamic of the show, then reverted it super unsatisfyingly, to show it didn't matter?" "Oh, a world where Rick can't use his typical science gadgets? He adapts immediately and becomes a badass science sorcerer, but only if it's the least satisfying way we can do it. Also add horny dragons." (I think the horny dragons were unintentionally unfunny, but I think the rest of the episode's issues were intentional)
It sounds almost conspiratorial, I know, but stick with me on this one.
The train episode proves this for me. While the episode itself is rather solid, and the comedy is pretty good, the implications of the ending bits are massive. Rick and Morty get zapped for all their "story potential," and the only way they can stop it is by running it into the ground by being obnoxious. They zoom out and Rick makes an over-merchandising joke while being creepy even by his standards. Given that this whole episode was a retry of a "corrupted Hero's Journey" (see The Vindicators), this episode was probably under more scrutiny than any other episode, and thus, is a better reflection of the show's direction as a whole. Yet, the only takeaway there is, for the entire episode, rounds off to "wouldn't it be funny if... nothing mattered?" The train scene by itself was enough to prove this, but the zoom out and weird Rick behavior serves *only* to confirm this. The intentional takeaway of the episode is exactly that nothing matters.
The intentional takeaway of the show is that nothing matters.
And while it's in the context of humor, it's more like one big anti-joke.
      It's not a joke, it's a statement.
"Wouldn't it be funny if nothing mattered."

    • @sdbzfan1
      @sdbzfan1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@nyahnyahson523 weird thing the whole, wouldn't it be funny if nothing matters, is something I can get behind, Rick and Morty already isn't standard television in that it comes and goes like dead beat dad, so when it comes back I have a few laughs then promptly forget about it, this worked to its favor back in seasons 1 and 2 but come the end of 2 it got popular and I genuinely think the writers do hate that fact given how every time they do something world changing they undermine it the next episode or even the end of the season, I think the main issue with reviewers is both annoyance with fans overhyping the show as better than it is but also feeling like the writers view all their fans as the same annoying people that want things to change, everyone, everyone brings up how much they hate the baby episode and love the rick backstory episode and to me I just saw the baby episode as the writers blowing off some steam, not every episode needs to be a banger not every episode needs to move the story along, people see the whole facist Morty as a substitute for the fans when I just see it as a way to make fun of constraints when making a product people hounding you to things you'd rather do on your own terms

I think a good indicator of this show’s decline is the fact that, if you zone out from the audio and take a look at what’s on screen, a lot of clips from the recent seasons show the characters with the same annoyed, bitter “rant face”. In the earlier seasons, the family genuinely loved each other and there were a lot of moments where you could see that love and trust in their faces. But now, the only times the characters look happy or sincere is when the joke is on them. The rest of the time they alternate between annoyed, afraid, and depressed. It truly looks like you’re seeing the family lose their souls season after season and fall into a bitter, angry depression. I wish that Rick and Morty regains some optimism or sincerity in season 6, but I no longer have hope. At least we have Smiling Friends now to fill that void.

You know, an aspect I used to love about Rick and Morty was that Jerry was a dick, but one you could understand. Everyone always wants to be a Rick, maybe even a Beth or even a Morty. But the vast majority of people would be like Jerry, and that's not SUPPOSED to be a bad thing. When it comes down to it, Jerry generally does have the best interests at heart for his family. His worst moments is when he actually gets recognized and his ego balloons out of control as a result of having too much sips of the fine wine Rick gets drunk off of on an average basis. Rick is not supposed to be replicable, and I felt like that message was that Jerry was a believable response to being an in-law to one of the most insane scientists in the universe.
But now he's just kind of a one-note joke. He's inherently pathetic to everything around him, yet nobody can see why having someone who wishes to return to normalcy is inherently a bad thing. Rick and Morty is like if you started listening to a rock band. The songs are great!
Then, they start making some absolute bangers, and you're all like "Oh man, this band knows exactly what rock fans want to hear!"
Then you go to a concert and the band plays your favourite song, but then mocks you for listening to rock instead of classical music.

I definitely did enjoy when Rick would be outmatched and then desperately start yelling "Run Morty! You have to run!" The point SHOULD be that Rick is a piece of shit and the show should prove that constantly by showing him lose due to him being a piece of shit. The Cronenberg episode was the best example of that. Rigamortus is a show that is depressing to watch.
I remember rewatching Season 5 because of how disappointed I was the first time and it just filled me with such emptiness.
It's like watching your best friend become more and more addicted to crack until you can't recognize them anymore. It's sad to even think about.
And it hurts even more to see Rick and Morty as what it is nowadays considering how refreshing and well-written the first two seasons were. I used to consider it one of my favorite cartoons of all time.
Knowing how there are 50 episodes left that were ordered, or more precisely, 5 more seasons, I can't imagine the show getting better or attempting to go back to basics. I can only imagine Richard and Mortimer succumbing to a deep depression of self-hatred until it finally pulls the trigger on itself and is left with a legacy of mediocrity and failure rather than its moment in the spotlight.

Imagine Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland walking towards them with a stoic look on their faces. Imagine Justin looking at his creations with utter disappointment, while Dan looks at them with simple apathy. Imagine Dan raising a gun at these things, and pulling the trigger on both of them. I agree with most of your points, but my understanding as to why Beth loved Jerry was because he made her feel like she mattered. That she spent so much of her life chasing Rick's approval...Only to find out if she was the clone and he knew she found out he would kill her. It wasn't exactly written well but that was my understanding why she ran to Jerry, because he legitimately does love her and she realised what a shitty, horrible father and human being her dad Rick is, and how he has no attachment to her whatsoever and sees her was expendable.
I also really didn't like Summer in the episode where she turns herself giant (and Beth turns her inside out) as it makes her into a massive fucking hypocrite. She literally cheats on Ethan behind his back in episode 2 and we're meant to sympathise with her when he dumps her. And feel he is deserving of being Cronenberg'D by Morty when everyone ignores how she cheated on Ethan and he never found out about it. All we have to go on is Summer's reasoning why they broke up since we never get Ethan's side of the story.

@@Mrhellslayerz Speaking of Star Wars, the "Solo" movie spent about 30 mins on exactly this crap.
Most Star Wars fans know that in the first movie, Han Solo says the line about the Millennium Falcon that, "it's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs." If you look it up, a "parsec" is a real life term used in space... but it refers to distance, not time.
This became an inside joke for Star Wars fans. Obviously, George Lucas was looking for some "spacey"-sounding words to throw in his script, so he looks some up, but in his haste didn't realize the word he picked made the line nonsensical. He-he, good laugh, Lucas ain't perfect. End of story.
...then the Solo movies spends a good 20-30 mins trying to force it to make sense with the most convoluted and unnecessary plotline I have ever seen. They make up a stupid freaking space station that for some reason is in the middle of giant cloud of dust and rocks, and the "Kessel Run" is a secret path through it, until...
You know what, I just can't. Can't even explain it, it's that stupid. They took what was a cute joke fans liked toss around, and took it WAY too seriously. It's like the script writers of Solo never seen or liked any Star Wars film before, so in attempt to feel grounded in the community took to online discussion forums, saw the joke, and thought what fans really wanted was: "to have it explained in excruciating detail"? When all they really did was ruin a cute inside joke, cause now whenever I re-watch to hear my favorite line about "12 parsecs", it reminds me of that horrible Solo movie.

You see it sometimes in sports where a winning coach is fired for some reason, and often it blows up after a season or so. Anyway, after thinking about season 3, I'd say that, for me, the good shows were so fun they made up for the bad shows, or the bad parts of shows, that started showing up. And I was able to ignore any troubling signs that I noticed. For instance, in The Rickshank Rickdemption, the evil bug empire was killed off really easily. This was a powerful empire that was built up over several great episodes. You had to fear them. Poof! Gone. This should have told me that nothing is sacred and you shouldn't invest any thought thinking about future plot-lines, but I just enjoyed the episode instead. In The Vindicators & also in The Rickchurian Mortydate Rick was basically all-powerful. This should have led me to ask: If Rick can do anything at any time, how can there be any real drama or tension in future shows? Over time, also, Morty became less innocent and harder to root for. But I just smiled and watched...
I really trusted that show and looked forward to seeing them. The long layoffs were very frustrating! I'd re-watch the old shows many times. Now, I couldn't say what season they are on.

I'll never understand shows attacking their fans. A funny elbow to the audience from time to time is fine, but the amount of seething hatred and contempt shows like Rick & Morty show for them is just irritating and uncomfortable. Like, sorry for watching your show and for being invested in the world you set up, I'll go watch a different one? idfk jesus.

I lost most artistic respect for Dan Harmon, when he was fired from community for being a horrible person, but then as soon as he was rehired, mocks the writers who had taken his place for season 4.

@@ron4202 Was sexually harrasing a writer named Megan Ganz. That combined with being so difficult to work with and his show not being as succesful as expected, gives him no right to mock the people who kept the show on tv while he dealt with his demons.
He did apologize and she accepted it, so it does seem like he learned his lesson (unlike many).
It's actually why the Jeff/Annie ship which had been building in season 4, was tanked as soon as season 5 came back with Dan.

I still enjoy the show, but the pessimism and dark brand of humor for old fast. I’m glad they tried something new in season five with Rick and Morty’s relationship, and I do love the evil morty lore. I think if they continue to do that and find ways to change things up they can keep the show going.

Rick and Morty complaining about serialisation is like that one kid who stopped giving a shit about revising a subject in school after getting good grades for a while, failing tests because they couldn't be bothered to learn, then complaining about how "the school system has failed" them.

I'll never forget the time at the height of it's popularity I was in a club and had about 3 or 4 people talk to me about the show. I wasn't really into it, but I never hated it so talking about it got a bit stale. One guy when I said I wasn't really into it just turned around and walked away. Not complaining, at least I didn't have to listen to him tell me how brilliant the show was.
