Once again, this explanation is trying to diminish glory to God. Harriet gave glory to the Lord who gave her the grace and strength to survive and lead others to freedom. I'm glad the film captured that aspect of truth. Knowledge of topography cant outrun hounds on your track....we know the narrative and who brought her through. Praise the Lord!

@Pamelafountain60 jones Ruby Dee didn't play Harriet Tubman in a 1964 movie. She played Tubman in an episode of a 1963-1964 season TV series called "The Great Adventure." It was an anthology series, with each episode based on a different historical character. (IIRC Dee's husband Ossie Davis also appeared in several episodes.)
I don’t know why people are focusing on the negatives of this film. I think it’s very inspirational, powerful, and gave Harriet justice. I really loved it, and I hope Cynthia Erivo wins the Academy for her performance! ♥️
We care about the negative because it dilutes the story to the core. Now it seems like the only reason Harriet went back was because of her husband and only that, and the fact that the original movie says the bounty hunter was white now this one says he was black. Why should they add fiction to a story that was real? Why couldn't they narrate exactly how it is. It's our history as black people and we ought to know it as it is not some fiction from someone who has money and decides to add their own version

"A Woman Called Moses" a made for TV movie 1978 starring Cecily Tyson is what I believe was a good an accurate presentation of the life of Harriet Tubman. The real problem with that movie is the very poor film quality back then. Most scenes are filmed at night which was the safest time of the day for Harriet to travel. The scenes are so dark the screen is nearly blank. I would love to see this movie recreated using modern digital technology in order the make the movie much more enjoyable to watch.
Of course the film has historical inaccuracies in favor of Hollywood. But for the comments about the “white savior,” saving Harriet from the Black bounty hunter, please realize that... (spoiler alert) He killed the black bounty hunter so that that he hurt Harriet himself. He wanted Harriet to suffer at his own feet. So no, he was no “white savior.” Use the plot of the story to find your own inner strength. Focus on the theme of not letting the opinion of others hinder you from your own truth. That’s what the biopic represents.

How do you condense years or even decades of someone's life into a 2 hour movie that is designed 1st and foremost to entertain and to make a profit? Unless you are some sort of historical anthropologist, capable of doing real and extensive independent research, you actually have no idea that the books you read are actually true or not or to what to degree they are true. To be certain, history is by definition a fiction based on societal ideals and cherry picked event highlights design to create and promote a national or cultural narrative. Even if you wrote an autobiography, it would certainly contain only your version of the parts of your life that you chose to reveal. It would be your history, but not a peer reviewed factual account of your life. I suspect that If Harriet Tubman read one of your books that you like about her life, she would read it with utter dismay and shock at the BS that's in that book.
Harriet Tubman had great visions. I have no doubt about this. She had a great deal of knowledge yes, but she followed her unseen Guides given to her by the Creator of the Universes. Please do not try to diminish this great ability bestowed upon her.
No ones trying to diminish it, but not everyone believes in "the Creator of Universes". If that's what she believed they were, people shouldn't skip over that belief, but it's ludicrous to fake believing in something you don't believe in when it's not necessary to explain her story. A lot of people also say spirits are real, and while I'm not gonna try to force them to not believe it, I'm also not gonna force myself to pretend I think its real.
While it is true that this is a movie, it’s also important that the true history is also told. The movie captures the emotion of Harriet’s story and while that is important, it does not portray accurate facts, so it is important that those facts are discussed.

I liked the movie. If this encourages people to read more about her and help her not to be forgotten, great! Many movies take liberties to facilitate the story line. If this were a documentary, which it is not, I don't think as many people would watch it. If the truth be told, most details of movies are forgotten over time except to the few passionate fans. She was a great woman so much so that there is even enough material to make a second movie.

We saw Dragon about Bruce Lee, but because we'd already read three bios on Lee, we hated that movie. Same with X. We own three dozen books on the Minister so the movie totally disappointed us. @@jettap7652 I saw the movie and what was shown of her work as a conductor was little to the point I'd say it was nothing in light of how much time should have been devoted to it rather than the fictionalization which took up the greater part and had the greater impact.Tubman did live till the age 90 after all and her work on the underground railroad in the decade they did cover in the movie was much deeper and impactful than most are led to believe. It's my hope that this leads people to go and actually read the biographies out there as well as explore the other forms of media which exist and provide a more expansive view of how bad ass Tubman really was.

That's anybody's story. Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues with Diana Ross wasn't accurately told. The film didn't really focus on her career nor did it do her legacy justice. Lady Sings the Blues mostly centered around her drug addiction and her relationship with Louis McKay. Louis wasn't the good guy that he was depicted as in the film. Louis McKay was abusive. The real Louis McKay was a technical advisor for the film.

The movie wasn't that bad. It wasn't meant to be a documentary. I thought it depicted her as a hero and gave people a better idea of what she REALLY did........why complain, just retell the story more accurately if you don't like it

What was said in Sarah Hopkins Bradford`s autobiography about Harriett Tubman concerning her first husband John was actually told to her by Harriett herself.She did not feel as if he was love-struck and devoted.In fact when she return to the plantation where in leaved she caught him with another women whom he had married and she did not know that he had remarried.
Without doubt Harriet was indeed guided by her creator and her ancestors. If you know you know. She was also a root worker and her knowledge of natural medicine and African spiritual traditions passed down from her ancestors helped her heal soldiers during the civil war too

This movie is very good. It’s about Harriet Tubman, and what she did. Honestly, not everybody knows EVERYTHING about her. No human on Earth knows everything about her. Yes there are errors about the movie. And if they were going to make a good movie about it, they’ll have to make at least one fictional character to make the movie more interesting. And not everything will be perfect, a lot of people in the comments are probably hating because everybody else is. Please stop hating, if you’d actually set aside the minor errors and watch the movie you be crying, surprised, or wowed.

Wrong! Harriett had spiritual gift from God. She operated in them. Old black folks know this. For sure she was a Moses to black people. She freed more than the white man could account for.
Whether there was ever a black bounty hunter is quite frankly unknown. I mean I see a lot of comments strictly bashing the movie because of this addition to the movie. So in less you were around during slave times to have really seen or heard whether there was actually a black bounty hunter, don't just assume. And on another note while the creators did take some creative liberties in adding some characters and portraying others in different ways, can we just appreciate the quality and the beauty of the acting in the film itself?

All in all Harriet is still a very good film. Movie of the year? No but Cynthia's performance should be celebrated. Costume design is also noteworthy. The song Stand Up is truly inspiring. My only complaint it wasn't an hour longer. Good luck Oscar night.
Its a movie! Its not a freakin Biography! What do we know for a fact!? This woman escaped slavery and went back to free other slaves. A Goddamn hero. Why do people make everything so hard. I would encourage others to see the movie and draw your own conclusions instead of relying on information from others. Most movies made about historical figures and events embellish storylines for theatrical impact, and consolidate and/or create characters to enhance the storyline. Even history books that are considered accurate, will to an extent still be imprinted with the author's personality or literary style, regardless of the author's ethnicity. My husband and I saw the movie and neither of us felt as if her slaveowners were portrayed as benevolent people. The son was a selfish and ruthless master. And when push-came-to-shove, even his mother was willing to sell off some of the slaves to save the family farm. The narrator of this video seems to have a clear bias against spirituality as evidenced by his statements against Mrs. Tubman's encounters with GOD. One of the most moving scenes in the movie was when one of the slave catchers who was tracking her witnessed one of her spiritual experiences and asked about her GOD, and subsequently became one of her biggest allies and helpers in leading more slaves to freedom. If our ancestors did not see her calling and assignment to help bring slaves to freedom as that given to her by GOD, why would she be given the name Moses by those longing for freedom? This has been well-documented even before Kasi Lemmons wrote her screen-play. If you decide to see this movie as with anything you read or hear, eat the meat and spit out the bones. In other words, take the good and throw away the bad. Regarding the portrayal of the black men in the movie, her husband and father were portrayed as good men. And there were others as well. I'm sure there were plenty of good black men that were free and in captivity in those days. The Bigger Long character was no worse than the slave owners and other slave catchers. They were all portraits of evil people. He just happened to be of the same skin color as Harriett. A good analogy of this to me is the epidemic of drugs in America. The drug may be crack in the "black communities." It may be opioid or meth in the "white communities". The dealers in both of those communities may share the same skin color or ethnicity of those in his/her community. But at the end of the day the dealer is bringing death, disease, and destruction to those in his community. Opioids may be considered pharmaceutical grade drugs approved by the FDA and drug executives, but they are still dealing deadly drugs. Crack may be whack, and not approved by the FDA, but it still is a deadly drug. If the trailers for the movie draw your curiosity go see the movie. Do your research and gather information from several sources. Then draw your own conclusions. Have a great day! And may you never become complacent in your quest for truth.

I truly believe she heard the voice of God. Even if she had seizures, they would only strengthen her relationship with God. Considering that they did consult with Harriet's family for this movie, we can assume that they d8d approve of the final product. As we all know, Hollywood typically does take some creative liberties with stories. I don’t know why people are focusing on the negatives of this film. I think it’s very inspirational, powerful, and gave Harriet justice. I really loved it, and I hope Cynthia Erivo wins the Academy for her performance! ♥️

"A Woman Called Moses" a made for TV movie 1978 starring Cecily Tyson is what I believe was a good an accurate presentation of the life of Harriet Tubman. The real problem with that movie is the very poor film quality back then. Most scenes are filmed at night which was the safest time of the day for Harriet to travel. The scenes are so dark the screen is nearly blank. I would love to see this movie recreated using modern digital technology in order the make the movie much more enjoyable to watch.

So no, he was no “white savior.” Use the plot of the story to find your own inner strength. Focus on the theme of not letting the opinion of others hinder you from your own truth. Do you understand the difference between a movie and a documentary? How do you condense years or even decades of someone's life into a 2 hour movie that is designed 1st and foremost to entertain and to make a profit?
Unless you are some sort of historical anthropologist, capable of doing real and extensive independent research, you actually have no idea that the books you read are actually true or not or to what to degree they are true.
To be certain, history is by definition a fiction based on societal ideals and cherry picked event highlights design to create and promote a national or cultural narrative.
Even if you wrote an autobiography, it would certainly contain only your version of the parts of your life that you chose to reveal. It would be your history, but not a peer reviewed factual account of your life.
I suspect that If Harriet Tubman read one of your books that you like about her life, she would read it with utter dismay and shock at the BS that's in that book.
Harriet Tubman had great visions. I have no doubt about this. She had a great deal of knowledge yes, but she followed her unseen Guides given to her by the Creator of the Universes. Please do not try to diminish this great ability bestowed upon her.
No ones trying to diminish it, but not everyone believes in "the Creator of Universes". If that's what she believed they were, people shouldn't skip over that belief, but it's ludicrous to fake believing in something you don't believe in when it's not necessary to explain her story. A lot of people also say spirits are real, and while I'm not gonna try to force them to not believe it, I'm also not gonna force myself to pretend I think its real.

I liked the movie. If this encourages people to read more about her and help her not to be forgotten, great! Many movies take liberties to facilitate the story line. If this were a documentary, which it is not, I don't think as many people would watch it. If the truth be told, most details of movies are forgotten over time except to the few passionate fans. She was a great woman so much so that there is even enough material to make a second movie.
I personally don't like watching movies that facilitate the story, but that's my preference.

@@jettap7652 I saw the movie and what was shown of her work as a conductor was little to the point I'd say it was nothing in light of how much time should have been devoted to it rather than the fictionalization which took up the greater part and had the greater impact.Tubman did live till the age 90 after all and her work on the underground railroad in the decade they did cover in the movie was much deeper and impactful than most are led to believe. It's my hope that this leads people to go and actually read the biographies out there as well as explore the other forms of media which exist and provide a more expansive view of how bad ass Tubman really was.

If you couldn't see that the adding of a fictional violent, brutish Black male bounty hunter was to divert attention away from the real villian, the slavemaster/plantation owner, the institution of chattel slavery and most pointedly Harriet's enslaver and made him the white savior and sympathetic. Obviously the producers didn't want a certain group to feel too uncomfortable watching this film.

That's anybody's story. Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues with Diana Ross wasn't accurately told. The film didn't really focus on her career nor did it do her legacy justice. Lady Sings the Blues mostly centered around her drug addiction and her relationship with Louis McKay. Louis wasn't the good guy that he was depicted as in the film. Louis McKay was abusive. The real Louis McKay was a technical advisor for the film.

People create these issues to stop Black people from being exposed to our history. When Hannibal or Cleopatra, are being portrayed as white in the movies, you don't hear white people say they are not going to see it because they were actually black. What was said in Sarah Hopkins Bradford`s autobiography about Harriett Tubman concerning her first husband John was actually told to her by Harriett herself.She did not feel as if he was love-struck and devoted.In fact when she return to the plantation where in leaved she caught him with another women whom he had married and she did not know that he had remarried.
The bigger long character was a mistake and should have "NEVER" been been allowed to hit movie screens.

Without doubt Harriet was indeed guided by her creator and her ancestors. If you know you know. She was also a root worker and her knowledge of natural medicine and African spiritual traditions passed down from her ancestors helped her heal soldiers during the civil war too

Movies are not made to be historically accurate or educational, movies are made to be entertaining while people are enjoying popcorn, candy, and soda. The best way to acquire real information of any historical figure is to do research. RIF (Reading Is Fundamental).

This movie is very good. It’s about Harriet Tubman, and what she did. Honestly, not everybody knows EVERYTHING about her. No human on Earth knows everything about her. Yes there are errors about the movie. And if they were going to make a good movie about it, they’ll have to make at least one fictional character to make the movie more interesting. And not everything will be perfect, a lot of people in the comments are probably hating because everybody else is. Please stop hating, if you’d actually set aside the minor errors and watch the movie you be crying, surprised, or wowed.

Wrong! Harriett had spiritual gift from God. She operated in them. Old black folks know this. For sure she was a Moses to black people. She freed more than the white man could account for.
Why do some people think they have to nit pick the history in a movie. It's not a documentary a dramatic MOVIE based on a historic figure.
Whether there was ever a black bounty hunter is quite frankly unknown. I mean I see a lot of comments strictly bashing the movie because of this addition to the movie. So in less you were around during slave times to have really seen or heard whether there was actually a black bounty hunter, don't just assume.
And on another note while the creators did take some creative liberties in adding some characters and portraying others in different ways, can we just appreciate the quality and the beauty of the acting in the film itself?
I love the movie but damn this is a lot of changes and fabricated parts. It makes a good movie but a shitty historical documentation of Harriet Tubmans true life.

All in all Harriet is still a very good film. Movie of the year? No but Cynthia's performance should be celebrated. Costume design is also noteworthy. The song Stand Up is truly inspiring. My only complaint it wasn't an hour longer.

None of us were there. Who can really tell the true story. Even if you spoke with family members that are still living, its still second hand information. Just celebrate that it happened. Celebrate that she was an exceptional woman. Damn..

I would encourage others to see the movie and draw your own conclusions instead of relying on information from others. Most movies made about historical figures and events embellish storylines for theatrical impact, and consolidate and/or create characters to enhance the storyline. Even history books that are considered accurate, will to an extent still be imprinted with the author's personality or literary style, regardless of the author's ethnicity.
My husband and I saw the movie and neither of us felt as if her slaveowners were portrayed as benevolent people. The son was a selfish and ruthless master. And when push-came-to-shove, even his mother was willing to sell off some of the slaves to save the family farm.
The narrator of this video seems to have a clear bias against spirituality as evidenced by his statements against Mrs. Tubman's encounters with GOD. One of the most moving scenes in the movie was when one of the slave catchers who was tracking her witnessed one of her spiritual experiences and asked about her GOD, and subsequently became one of her biggest allies and helpers in leading more slaves to freedom. If our ancestors did not see her calling and assignment to help bring slaves to freedom as that given to her by GOD, why would she be given the name Moses by those longing for freedom? This has been well-documented even before Kasi Lemmons wrote her screen-play.
If you decide to see this movie as with anything you read or hear, eat the meat and spit out the bones. In other words, take the good and throw away the bad.
Regarding the portrayal of the black men in the movie, her husband and father were portrayed as good men. And there were others as well. I'm sure there were plenty of good black men that were free and in captivity in those days. The Bigger Long character was no worse than the slave owners and other slave catchers. They were all portraits of evil people. He just happened to be of the same skin color as Harriett.
A good analogy of this to me is the epidemic of drugs in America. The drug may be crack in the "black communities." It may be opioid or meth in the "white communities". The dealers in both of those communities may share the same skin color or ethnicity of those in his/her community. But at the end of the day the dealer is bringing death, disease, and destruction to those in his community. Opioids may be considered pharmaceutical grade drugs approved by the FDA and drug executives, but they are still dealing deadly drugs. Crack may be whack, and not approved by the FDA, but it still is a deadly drug.
If the trailers for the movie draw your curiosity go see the movie. Do your research and gather information from several sources. Then draw your own conclusions. Have a great day! And may you never become complacent in your quest for truth.

I truly believe she heard the voice of God. Even if she had seizures, they would only strengthen her relationship with God. There was too many instances where she would have been caught yet she would go another way. Call it luck, coincidence, but she herself said it was the voice of God. You should honor her own words and not theories by people who did not even know her

People who complain about the film was still in the Theatre watching it. You gave them your money first then your opinion because it doesn’t “seem” accurate. I’ve watched plenty of interviews with Cynthia Erivo, who has done a great job in my eyes, has met the TRUE family of Harriet and they watched the film and said it was good. People who have so much to say about films and shows don’t know the hard work that goes into it. I personally do because this is my craft.Just give her the props of being apart of it and move on! and i did not "like" the creative license used when the black man kicks the woman in the face and kills her, but blacks did not make the movies, they just played the parts and played then well i might add.
Considering that they did consult with Harriet's family for this movie, we can assume that they d8d approve of the final product. As we all know, Hollywood typically does take some creative liberties with stories. But, the overall message to me with this movie is that every generation needs to be taught about this amazing woman.
