Once you get it flat, seal the bottom too. Chances are the warp is because moisture penetrated through the unfinished side and caused it to expand which now shows a dip in the top. You will also need to support it from the bottom too.
It's because you only treated one side of the worktop with varnish and the other side was left natural that will cause it to bow on one side often. Best to always treat both sides top and bottom then it will reduce likelihood of this happening.. 👍🏴🇬🇧
You are 100% correct. And the angle iron without a treat of the underside will likely rip teh screws out. Not enough to prevent it from happening again.
As has been stated by several others, the major reason your countertop warped is because you sealed the top and sides, but not the bottom. Moisture came from below, and soaked into the raw wood. Causing the bottom of the slab to expand, while the top did not expand. Your angle iron pieces will help. But your best bet is to get it good and flat the way you did, and then seal the bottom. Giving it several coats, to be sure...
My personal opinion, you should have sealed the bottom of the counter top. It probably absorbs the moisture, and cool temps from the cellar with the wood on the bottom expanding when the wood on top not expanding because the top side is sealed. The steel angle iron is a great idea, but sealing all six sides will do wonders to prevent warping.
if a GFI is required by your local codes then just make the first receptacle in the island a GFI and all the other connected to the load side are GF protected also.
The iron bars will certainly help but it would also be beneficial to seal the underside of the wood too. When one side of "raw" wood is left unsealed, it will absorb and react to humidity more so than the sealed top and cause odd wood movement effects. Just like other folks have already said 🙂
Even with the angle iron, you still need to seal the back side of the island from moisture. Also you will want to paint the angle iron to prevent rust.
When finishing wood products a good rule of thumb is what you do to one side of the wood surface you should do to the other. Wood is susceptible to moisture in the air and varnishing closes off the pores and stabilizes it. Where your cellar is more damp than the rest of the room puts more moisture into the wood surface on one side causing warping. I would recommend starting over with a new surface and using wood finish on both sides. You can also put in a metal ‘C’ channel in the wood surface on the cellar side of the top. I am curious to see if the angle iron will be strong enough to hold the surface straight. Cam at black tail studios has several videos on stabilization of wood surfaces. This comment is coming from a place of love and respect for you and your family.
That’s super alright. Super cool basement access, super cool idea and I’m super impressed how you took that super sag out of the counter top. I know y’all are super happy with the way it turned out.
I love that island storage bunker set-up. I'd put hidden hinges on the access door and like @fisherus said, put latches on the inside to lock it all up. Keep smiling!.
Another reason for the bowing could be that the counter is only sealed on one side, with higher humidity the unfinished side absorbs moisture faster than the sealed side.
Great job on the bunker. One reason your top warped was due to only sealing one side of the counter top. As the bottom dried out, it pulled the grain closer causing the warp. I recommend you seal both sides. Your hinges need to be hidden as well as your latch for securing the top. Recommend using a magnetic lock to release the lop. There are many hinges that can be hidden. If the power is cut off upstairs, what sources of light do you have down in the bunker and what about going to the bathroom? You're very skilled and build to or above code so good on you. Thanks for the video.
I think it's pretty cool, but doubling as your kitchen island it comes at the cost of prime kitchen cabinet/draw storage. 16:50 you should staple up some bubble foil insulation on the ceiling down there so you are not eating insulation down there. I have it in my basement low ceiling its soft and durable if you bump your head and reflects a ton of light where you need it. Plus it keeps the insulation where it belongs.
Nice modification. Well done. I think I might have used the circular saw to relief cut that deep dado then run the router through. Less wear and tear on the router bit. And making that mess in the house? Good job cleaning up the dust. Awesome as always. Thanks for sharing
Agreed … seal the bottom with what you used on the top. The dampness from the shelter below has warped the wood. Now that you reinforced the counter top door complete the process and you shouldn’t have the problem again … great job👍👍👍🇺🇸👍👍🇺🇸
Just curious to know if you can lock the sliding top from the inside so that it doesn’t move if someone was inside your house and happened to touch it?
You should consider putting in a way to lock the countertop in place from below as well so any intruders can't slide it back, keeping you safe down below. Love the vids!
It bowed because you didn't finish/seal the underside of the table top and it absorbed more moisture than the top so the wood on the bottom expanded expanded causing the bow. . You need to seal the undersurface of the wood to equalize the wood absorption of moisture.
I hope you are grounding the sheet metal. And it does need a GFCI breaker because it is near water. You probably need two circuits. How many crock pots can all those outlets run?
I love this design. I'm noodling how I might convert our island into something like this. However - we have our cook top in the island. Hmmmm - going to require some creative thinking.
Oh mann.. i'm still remember watching you back in the old days when you were still in Indonesia. I'm glad that you guys still making a content! Keep it up!
Hi Y'all, I love the hidden bunker, please make sure you have a door the you can get from the bunker to outside. That way If terrorist or cray people happens to break into your home, you will have a place to hide In and get out of the bunker to outside of the house. Make sure you have a lock on the inside of the bunker. Make sure that the door into the bunker Is hidden or disguised with plants, or a water hose holder or something else so It can't be clearly seen from outside. Make sure all who live In that home know that they can run Into the bunker for emergency purposes. I love It. I wish I had one. Blessings to all of you.
Put a GFI outlet in the first position on the island (connected to that wire you were testing for power). Any outlets connected to it on the load side of the GFI outlet are GFI protected.
My concern if the underside is not treated would be if the wood tries to warp again and the angle irons prevent it from doing so, could the wood end up splitting along the seems?
Great job on this. I would like to do something similar but instead of passing through the island, I would like the entire island to slide to reveal the passage because the island is actually just a chest of functional drawers. Do you think that would be possible?
I noticed the 4 AR 15s in the corner of your bunker! And those 30 round banana clips! See you got the 1000 round case of military ammo also! Good thinking! That will help out with the bad guys!!!
Playing out the scenario you have to escape to the cellar. It all looks very good but one thing, locking the counter top from inside as you go down? Just an added safety there.
Hello Martin, Jules and family. I’ve started watching your build from the first video. The latest video I watched was from July 2021 and your just building the breezeway connecting the garage to the house. You guys are awesome. Im wondering how I would go about getting your building plans and maybe how much it cost to build. I can’t seem to find an email address for you
Did anyone else notice the cars driving backward into and out of the parking lot before your church sermon??? Had to run it a few times for my wife to see it...
Yes the island has to be on gfci. And all circuits must also be arc fault now. And nothing can be on dish washer, fridge and stove circuits. They have to be dedicated. Same with microwave. And kitchen outlets themselves have to only be on a shared circuit in the kitchen and not on the same wall as each other. Really each one should be on its own circuit or something close because a single toaster with a coffee maker will pop a breaker.
Are those boxes rated for use on a metal surface? Might want to ensure you ground that metal surface one way or another.... Also, you need to coat the back side of your countertop to avoid inconsistent moisture absorption.
What church did you go to in the beginning of this video? It reminded me of the denomination I went to as a kid and that my father-in-law used to pastor at. He has since passed.
I really like the design and function of your sliding island top and cellar access but I personally would have chosen some type of wood or veneer siding instead of that unsightly corrugated aluminum.
Seal the bottom. It happened to me also I made a solid wood top for a desk and sealed only the top. It pulled. The exposed wood pulls in water and then expands while the top does not absorb anything
Awesome job on fortifying the countertop, countersinking the reinforcing bars was a great idea. Now varnish the underside...lol 😂😅 Love what ya'll are doing ❤
I don't know how to break this to you, but the "secret" of your "secret bunker" is out! LOL and I agree with another post, Seal the bottom of the slab!
you need to finish the back side of your countertop. With it being raw, moisture can get in from that side and cause the wood to expand. With the top side finished, moisture cannot get in from that side, causing the wood to expand on the back and not on the top.
Is this legal to build in New Jersey. I need to get rid of stairs in the middle of my house ans create an island!! This will be the ideal solution. Please advise!!
This is nice and a good Idea. However, you have hinges on the door. If someone was actually looking at that, will begin to wonder why? The hinges are a give away to something else.
Electrical comment, The Range needs to be on an accessible GFCI circuit. Don't have the GFCI behind the stove. Be very careful of the metal roofing around your outlets, In an industrial applications you would probably have to actually bonds the metal to your equipment ground but some inspectors may not understand the safety issue.

Once you get it flat, seal the bottom too. Chances are the warp is because moisture penetrated through the unfinished side and caused it to expand which now shows a dip in the top. You will also need to support it from the bottom too.
A moisture issue, exactly what I was going to say!
Definitely a moisture issue. Ask me how I know? lol Lets just say I got the t-shirt
It's because you only treated one side of the worktop with varnish and the other side was left natural that will cause it to bow on one side often. Best to always treat both sides top and bottom then it will reduce likelihood of this happening.. 👍🏴🇬🇧
100%
I thought the same thing
Plus cooler cellar below with a water tank down there so the bottom face will be higher humidity.
100%
You are 100% correct. And the angle iron without a treat of the underside will likely rip teh screws out. Not enough to prevent it from happening again.
Sealing or varnishing both sides of the Island butcher block top would keep it more stable and not be affected by the moisture.
An excellent point.
There is no greater Love than to lay down ones own life for his friends.

That is a really great safe room and food storage. You had a very smart trick island idea.
That will tie the 2 sides together and give you the best support strength for sure. Glad you fixed it now while it wasn't too bad.
Working on a Finished Deck & a Finished dining room floor!! Surprised Julie let you, You NEED A workshop.
Nice seeing you in the Pulpit . Great job Marty
I’m totally doing this in my remodel !!
Another reason for the bowing could be that the counter is only sealed on one side, with higher humidity the unfinished side absorbs moisture faster than the sealed side.
I agree with Kirk, you have to seal both sides so that moisture doesn't get into it.
Seal the underside, and you could also put some saw curfes to underside to remove tension.

Sealing the underside the same as the top will stop humidity expanding one side to cause the curvature.
The island looks great !!!
You’are great family. Love from Indonesia ❤🇮🇩🇺🇸

Wow! The labels in your breaker box are AWESOME! Nice job.
Beautiful and a great idea. We love watching you build n you're smart ideas.
Fantastic build!

That is one smart build. Great job! Forney, TX
Could it be moisture coming up from the root cellar that is warping the wooden island?
For Emergencies Break Glass picture box with can opener inside? DIY project ❤
Only need GFI if you are closer than 3 ft to a water supply however it doesn’t hurt to be safe
Oh mann.. i'm still remember watching you back in the old days when you were still in Indonesia. I'm glad that you guys still making a content! Keep it up!

This is so awesome! I absolutely love this!!
Who would you be escaping from from your bunker?
Those electrical outlet boxes are way cool the way they anchor.. Thanks for the info, may come in handy sometime.
Those electrical boxes are known as "retro" boxes.
Put a GFI outlet in the first position on the island (connected to that wire you were testing for power). Any outlets connected to it on the load side of the GFI outlet are GFI protected.
Hello martin &family from northern ireland👋👋
My concern if the underside is not treated would be if the wood tries to warp again and the angle irons prevent it from doing so, could the wood end up splitting along the seems?
You have to paint the underside otherwise it will bow again if humidity changes
Your wood top is sagging because of moisture. Once you get the sag out finish the back side to prevent moisture from entering the back side.
Great job on this. I would like to do something similar but instead of passing through the island, I would like the entire island to slide to reveal the passage because the island is actually just a chest of functional drawers. Do you think that would be possible?
Your secret is safe with me. Thanks for sharing
love the bunker love the show

You just need a gfci outlet in the first one on the Island. Then the other one will be protected.

Cool Coffee Table, did you build that too? That looks like a Baptist Church with you preaching.
Did anyone else notice the cars driving backward into and out of the parking lot before your church sermon??? Had to run it a few times for my wife to see it...
National Electric Code requires all 15A and 20A kitchen outlets be GFCI protected.
How clever! 🤓
You could use a stainless steel outlet cover to match the sheet metal island
Yes the island has to be on gfci. And all circuits must also be arc fault now.
And nothing can be on dish washer, fridge and stove circuits. They have to be dedicated. Same with microwave.

I wish I can build something like this in Indonesia. I have no idea about the permit, I need to do more research. Good job Om Martin dan istri! ❤
Just a thought... Put a lock for the top on the inside like you have on the outside. Like I said, just a thought. Thanks for sharing.

all you need is install three C channels under the counter top and it's a forever fix.
You should put a lock on the underside so you can prevent them from opening it if you all have to bug out to the bunker.
You might also want to seal up that mouse door you left in the cellar were the water hose went out before.
Seal the bottom. It happened to me also I made a solid wood top for a desk and sealed only the top. It pulled. The exposed wood pulls in water and then expands while the top does not absorb anything
Mantap 👍 pak Martin...
09:47 - So to see Safety Sally was there, haha.
Awesome job on fortifying the countertop, countersinking the reinforcing bars was a great idea. Now varnish the underside...lol 😂😅 Love what ya'll are doing ❤
I don't know how to break this to you, but the "secret" of your "secret bunker" is out! LOL and I agree with another post, Seal the bottom of the slab!
everytime i see that island i think its so cool
Grab yourselves a non-contact electrical tester their dirt cheap and will give you instant alert of power.
you need to finish the back side of your countertop. With it being raw, moisture can get in from that side and cause the wood to expand. With the top side finished, moisture cannot get in from that side, causing the wood to expand on the back and not on the top.
Good afternoon Mr
Am extra long tension rod or like a guitar truss rod?
you have to paint or varnish the same number of turns on both sides of the table then the table won't fold
Can you send me the details for the secret steps down What are the measurement you need
Selamat malam Pak Martin... Salam sehat dari Jogjakarta Indonesia...
Is this legal to build in New Jersey. I need to get rid of stairs in the middle of my house ans create an island!! This will be the ideal solution. Please advise!!
GFI only required within 3' of wet locations
Not when, if ever a bad guy comes along and I hope he never does.
Nice job, I guess its not much of a secret now! Show us more, please.
Way to go build Is that island
Love it
Semoga makin sukses selalu saudaraku, salam dari Indonesia yang mungkin banyak kenangan buwat martin janson❤❤❤🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Safety Sally should have told you to take the battery off before you adjust your router bit’s!
You really should get a couple of bolts on the inside of the door between the cellar and outside so it's secure 🤔
They are called remodel boxs
Thank you Jesus!
This is nice and a good Idea. However, you have hinges on the door. If someone was actually looking at that, will begin to wonder why? The hinges are a give away to something else.
Martin, when is a secret not a secret, when you tell four hundred and fifty four thousand people LOL,nice one,we won't tell anyone about it!
Electrical comment, The Range needs to be on an accessible GFCI circuit. Don't have the GFCI behind the stove.
