The osb lid will warp overtime allowing airflow. You’ll need to add a some kind of frame to the lid to keep it flat. A welded angle iron frame would work well. I’d also glue on foam board to one of the sides to help with the temperature differential.
I agree with the foam board. I used foam board attached to my osb for my attic door that was similar to your door. It sealed out the cold air completely. Great idea for your storage entry. Also, a different counter than your others would be so attractive. Butcher block is so beautiful.
Or you can use like weather stripping like how you do a door the door jam and like how the door would close you got weather stripping around it that will stop the air the cool air from coming up
Yessah....I was gonna bring up all of this too. Frame it so it can't warp, (with some center framing in case somebody decides to stand on it), weather seal it and foam board it. Then you got a hatch! OH...a secret hatch that nobody knows about too. Now if you can make it all automatic, that'd be cool.
Cheap and easy suggestion for a handle for the root cellar lid. Drill 2 holes and put a piece of rope through both holes and tie a knot on the back side of the holes.
Your home is looking better every day. It’s easy to keep smiling with Jule’s laughter and the positive attitude of both of you. May God continue to bless you and your family.
A couple of small pulleys attached to your sliding top and access door will open when the top is slid back. Just a thought. Your vids are awesome. I know it's alot of work editing but it is amazing what dedication can accomplish.
Why not add some pullies so when you push the countertop back, the lid you just made will automatically lift and stay in place until you close the top again? No need for extra effort of lifting that lid. Also, OSB is going to warp over time, if you leave it just plain like that. You probably want to make some sort of frame for it and add some insulation as well to get the best out of it. :) Great video! Love how the house is coming along!
Very positive and see we watched anyway. LOL The door looks a little weak, due to size, you may want to beef it up a little so it doesn't bow over time. Maybe some 1x2 or Metal option to make some ribs or cross section supports.
You might want to put some membrane under the feet of your stairs. Since it is non-pressure treated wood in contact with concrete, that will protect it from the moisture. That Grace detail tape that you've used in the past would work great.
I would have used a piston on the back side of the door and piano hinge on front. Also do yourself a favor and glue piece of rigid foam insulation on the back of the door. It will not add a lot of weight and that’s why I suggest the piston to assist with opening, otherwise great job with the stairs !!!⚓️🇺🇸
Have you seen a sailing boat entrance to get below from the cockpit? That's what I'm picturing... Maybe a cutting board that slides horizontally over the countertop. Like you said, a butcher block, rock n' roll!
You could install 1 inch thick insulation board using glue on most of the underneath side of the door to the storage space. It might also be good to insulate the cabinet walls themself just to try and keep the cold air contained there. I don't know if you planned it but you could also put in a light switch at the top of the stairs so they would be lighted all the way down. It is looking good!
I'd go for a different top from the rest of the kitchen counters. If Julie want a solid surface for the main counters then a hardwood butcher block would be a nice contrast for the island. To help more with the chill air from the root cellar you could use some "door sweeps" to seal off the air gaps both above and below the door as well as around the bottom of the sliding top.
Just a reminder don't forget to put a couple of outlets in the walls of your iland so you can use appliances, also a switch top of stairs inside the stairwell going down into the root cellar. In my carrier, I have seen and built many like this even slid-away tops with cooktops built into them but they were mostly for wine cellars or climate-controlled rooms, one or two with spiral staircases to save space, anyways always thought it was a cool idea. curious to see what or how you combat the cool airflow coming up. Anyways looking good.
your lid is going to warp without some sort of a frame to keep it straight. It will be cold on the bottom and warm on the top. I can guarantee it's going to twist. But all and all the whole project looks outstanding.
Beautiful drone shot! Hello Marty & Jules, you have come a long way & it looks so awesome the way everything is going to be working. I am so excited for you both with all of your hard work for your dream coming true. It's going to be beautiful! Take care & see you again. God Bless you& your family! ❤🙏🤗🍀
😱OH MY GOSH!!!! This is looking so cool!!!!😁 Your house is coming right along. I have learned so much about how things are done and what not to do, also. Just so you know, I will never be building a house. LOL! But so cool to see how y'all are building yours. I love petting other people's cat and yours are beautiful! I can't have any because of allergies.🤷🏻♀️ The snow outside is so beautiful! Pretty soon it will be melting away and I can't wait to see how green it's gonna be! Great video! God bless. 😊❤️
For the counter top, why not sourrce some wood from your property and use an epoxy resin to coat it and finish it. Maybe even torch it a bit to give it that rustic look.
I like it. Looks great. Hidden root cellar is awesome. Maybe add a rope so you don't have to bend over to open/close it. Butcher block would look good and tie into the garage apartment. Great teamwork. Thanks for sharing
A couple of gas struts and a hinge on the top would be great, not sure if you mentioned how that would work yet. But lifting it up like a bed in an RV.
Great job guy’s on the root cellar door. I would flame it and add some thick foam padding to keep the cold air out God Bless and thanks for sharing.☺️☺️❤️❤️❤️
You need to insulate the entrance much more thoughtfully. Think of it as a door to the outdoors just like your front door. Foam board is a good start, but you need to seal all air leaks and insulate the walls as well. Weatherstripping on the door just like your front door is essential. Insulate under the countertop with foam board as well. You don’t want a refrigerated countertop.
The island concept is cool! A countertop of any kind would be awesome, as long as the short section can be picked up so to gain access to your stairway. Nobody would think to look for ya'll down there except for viewers who watch your channel...lol Love what ya'll are doing ❤️
That is a really clever set-up going into the root cellar!! I really love the ingenuity of it. I guess you'll learn over time whether those piano hinges and the magnet will hold up. Those are my two concerns. Your cats are adorable and of course, so is Tux!
If you find the stairs too steep going down, consider making the treads like an alternating staircase. Heavy duty drawer glides would be nice for the countertop.
Are you going to put some long soft closing drawer slides on the bottom of the counter top? I think that would be a cool way to have the top opening up.
If you put a strong hatch lid catch instead of the magnet that locks the hatch in the open position you could then attach the top half of a handrail directly to it making it safer going up and down.
Without a doubt Corian is my fav. It's practically indestructable. Burn it accixentally? just sand the burn out, There is almost an infinite color selection to choose from. Have had friends get granite and were sorry they did. A glass knocked over will more than likely break - guaranteed. I have formica that is now 27 years old and is a pain --- spilled food sticks like concrete - going to try a cleaning product to add a sheen.I love your videos - your home is going to be magnicent!
My idea is to put rollers like on a sliding patio door on the inside walls for the counter to roll on. Haven't figure out what to do to hold it down when open.
I would put your osb in a frame to stiffen it up. Cover the backside with 1 inch insulation board. Put some sort of rubber sealant around the edges. Also the inside of the island needs to be insulted. Love the look and idea of the island.
As always you guys knock it out of park It is still one my favorite all around homestead channels complete Genius level thinking esp the stairs and sliding island unique in all aspects it will serve you well for years to come Awesome video Thanks for sharing it with us.
Put the counter lid section on gas struts instead of pushing the counter back. The cabinet door could lock down the gas struts with a door catch when closed. You could also counterbalance lifting the OSB lid once the cabinet door was opened
I did a counter top with ceramic tile, and Home depot had some special tile, with fruit, like painted on, we placed on corners and a couple in center, whatever you like, grouted it, looks good, also did one in bathroom similar too. My thoughts.
Laminate flooring must be in your house a few days to get acclimated to the temps. Do not bring it home and think your gonna lay it. It’s important that it gets room temp
Y'all should check out poly resin countertops. You can make some really interesting and beautiful tops with that stuff. Lots of videos on TH-cam also so you can learn how to do it for yourself. 😉 I'm getting more and more excited for Sarah's big day watching the house come together!
Very good plan on your underground food closet if you can call it ...nice space for your storage and a very cool way to access the needs .... I am curious now about your decoration idea around it up in the surrounding needs😎🤗 but the whole place is looking very nice for sure, just the windows and light all around is wonderful...🎉
How about adding a sheet of polystyrene insulation (blue board) to the bottom surface of the lid such that when the lid closes the insulation fits snugly against the floor joists. Then use aluminum tape to tape all edges of the blue board.
Hi Martin, I watched you wrestle drilling the screws on your piano hinge. Vix Bits self centering predrill bits work wonderful for exactly what you were doing. They come in many different sizes for common screws. Keep up the great content, Thanks for all your family does to provide entertainment.
To be honest, screws supplied in hardware packs, such as hinges or latches, are often of such poor quality that it's usually best to just throw them away and use the appropriate size of whatever brand of screws you normally use instead.
@@johnbanks8065 I totally agree with you that screws are not what they are meant to be. My comment as to Martin wrestling the screws was mainly cause he was screwing into OSB board. Self centering Vix Bits or their equal will predrill the hole in exact center of the intended target without wavering due to hard and soft woods glues together making installing screws so much easier to install.
Nice main thing also bring the floor in 48hr pre install for proper acclimation. Best to follow the makers recamendation but I found 2 days pre install safe.
Love this episode! Great access to cellar. I recommend either insulating the underside of lid or inside the island on all sides and door to control temperature changes!
Pretty good idea to use the space above the trap door. My concern is how often you will need access to the cellar during canning season, it might get to be a chore moving the island often. Thanks for sharing.

I agree. Foam board would help a lot with cold air infiltration.

So smart!!
For the echo in the big room(sound proofing)
You're welcome! Thanks for the Super Thanks!

Cheap and easy suggestion for a handle for the root cellar lid. Drill 2 holes and put a piece of rope through both holes and tie a knot on the back side of the holes.
I am a 62 yr old lady and I enjoy watching videos like yours!! I am sure Matt appreciates you wearing his Demolitia shirt on your channel. Take care
Your home is looking better every day. It’s easy to keep smiling with Jule’s laughter and the positive attitude of both of you. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Flush trim router works every time.
I do look forward to your videos. Tux and the cats are so entertaining. Oh yeah the building and homesteading too. 😅
😂 I understand!
You should have kept that area a secret bug out spot! Now we all know where to look!
A couple of small pulleys attached to your sliding top and access door will open when the top is slid back. Just a thought. Your vids are awesome. I know it's alot of work editing but it is amazing what dedication can accomplish.
Would also put in some pulley or hydraulic system to open it when sliding the top, and insulate the board and walls a tad to really keep out the air..
Love you all and your family! 🥰🙏✝️❤️
Why not add some pullies so when you push the countertop back, the lid you just made will automatically lift and stay in place until you close the top again? No need for extra effort of lifting that lid. Also, OSB is going to warp over time, if you leave it just plain like that. Very positive and see we watched anyway. LOL The door looks a little weak, due to size, you may want to beef it up a little so it doesn't bow over time. Maybe some 1x2 or Metal option to make some ribs or cross section supports.
That hidden stairway is very cool. You might want to consider a counter top where half of it flips over on top of the other half.
You might want to put some membrane under the feet of your stairs. Since it is non-pressure treated wood in contact with concrete, that will protect it from the moisture. That Grace detail tape that you've used in the past would work great.
You should insulate the walls around the stair well. Another layer of protection from the cold. 😊
Awesome job guys!
It's amazing what you can accomplish with Jesus and a lot of grit!
Well done. I love your entry to your cellar. Julie you are highly skilled now. Your house is beautiful.. enjoy.
Black walnut live edge slab for the top. Cool "secret " storage space.
You may want to insulate like you would a wall, the cool air coming from the cellar may make the kitchen area a little cooler in the winter.
Nice to see someone building steps from scratch. Thanks for showing us the process. I love your secret bunker idea guy’s! 🙏🙏🙏Blessings
Butcher Block can be a huge problem for bacterial growth. Solid surfaces should be stone or something similar
Butcher Block with some extended length drawer glides to make sliding the top smooth.

Good morning you guys how you guys doing today hope you guys are doing a great job keep up the good work 😻🥀💰🌴🌳😀😃😄😄😻
I suggest gluing some rigid polyurethane under your plywood floor door since the rest of your floor is insulated. 😊
😱OH MY GOSH!!!! This is looking so cool!!!!😁 Your house is coming right along. I have learned so much about how things are done and what not to do, also. For the counter top, why not sourrce some wood from your property and use an epoxy resin to coat it and finish it. Maybe even torch it a bit to give it that rustic look.
What about making the counter top hinge up with a set of gas shocks to assist (like a car hood). Might be a little easier to design and build
If you put your stair runners up under the floor joists it would gain you 3” of width on your stairs. Easy to support on the sides if that’s a worry.
I would use lag bolts through the stair side planks to attach to the floor joists.

I have been waiting for this multiple usage island build.
Thumbs up 👍 fixed the issue and moving on. Have a great week everyone !
So cool to have Kitchen Island Secret Access to Root Cellar and Bunker!
fasten a sheet of 1/2 to 3/4 insulation board to the bottom of the door to keep more cold out.
Are you going to put some long soft closing drawer slides on the bottom of the counter top? I think that would be a cool way to have the top opening up.
Love your Demolition Ranch T shirt !!!!!
Stairs to the basement look great😁👍
Mr Martin love you root cellar and your design of hiding it and the system of entry and the stairway ! Your home is awesome !
I don’t know where you lived has tornado or not , but this wine room could be a great shelter ❤
If you put a strong hatch lid catch instead of the magnet that locks the hatch in the open position you could then attach the top half of a handrail directly to it making it safer going up and down.

ya I will believe it when seeing it and those 2 tabby cats have your heart as they have are hearts as well I am sure they will be house cats
Fricken genius! I love it!
That's really cool! I wasn't sure how you were going to secure that hole. Seeing it come together is genius. Great work y'all! 🏆🎉 God bless 🙏
The door for the secret hatch you can put a motorized device of some sort so it opens at the push of a button
Use butcher block top and SOSS HINGES, so you could lift up section over door
My idea is to put rollers like on a sliding patio door on the inside walls for the counter to roll on. Haven't figure out what to do to hold it down when open.
Your place is looking awesome. Very impressed!
great idea for the island ,mjght be worth it to add a door handle close to the magnet catch, instead of using the pinkies
Great entrance to root cellar
I would put your osb in a frame to stiffen it up. Cover the backside with 1 inch insulation board. Put some sort of rubber sealant around the edges. Also the inside of the island needs to be insulted. Love the look and idea of the island.
I did something similar to my floor. Fyi, you will need insulation to stop the cold air from invading your space.
As always you guys knock it out of park It is still one my favorite all around homestead channels complete Genius level thinking esp the stairs and sliding island unique in all aspects it will serve you well for years to come Awesome video Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks guys you are the cats meow lol love your cats Big time

Looking fantastic!!!
You must be feeling all your work is moving along the plan!
should look into an automatic door closer for the lid, so you dont have to bend over to close it every time and to prevent it from slamming down
Use drawer slides for the top.
That island is gonna be gorgeous, great job guys! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Always fun to collect Electro gadgets😄🤓
Laminate flooring must be in your house a few days to get acclimated to the temps. Do not bring it home and think your gonna lay it. It’s important that it gets room temp

I'm getting more and more excited for Sarah's big day watching the house come together!
Top: Corian on top of a wooden frame, and leave enough hanging over the sides for bar stools to be useable by guests.
The island looks amazing👍
Getter done guys!
Home made picture frame case, (Sign reads in case of emergency break glass) Have a can opener an spoons lol in the root cellar ❤ love it!
Martin n Jules your build is becoming such a homely home I love the layout you've done, G'day from Western Australia
Very good plan on your underground food closet if you can call it ...nice space for your storage and a very cool way to access the needs .... You should put a Motor on the wood that u put the hinges on so when you slide the counter top it will open the door

Martin....you might want to "stiffen" that cover piece in case you ever have to get/walk on it to fix wiring on the island inside!!!!
Nice main thing also bring the floor in 48hr pre install for proper acclimation. Best to follow the makers recamendation but I found 2 days pre install safe.
Mayne glue some 1 inch or 1/2 inch Installation board under the hatch.
I think butcher block would looks awesome
For the door, you should use one of the doors that you push in and then it pops open.
Looking good!
clever root cellar
Are you planning to install a floorheating system? It’s efficient and very comfortable.
Love this episode! Great access to cellar. I recommend either insulating the underside of lid or inside the island on all sides and door to control temperature changes!
