I know Kirk and watched him build this van...he is one of the most talented builder ever...the van is awsome and he is too.....Most awsome van build ever.....
No mortgage .. discounted home owners ins.. ( still pay because I work seasonally 5 months at golf and 2 clients only and on the books btw landscape jobs) ) is still leaving me eating the bare minimum for food so I can save until I return to work. Thinking about a Wally world job next winter .. These are Rough times ..
Another nice build!! My heart aches for some of these situations, this lifestyle, and these free spirits. At 70 I have lived many lifestyles already, on the ocean, in a van, and in a really nice housebus that I built and lived in for many years. But now I am in a downward spiral with my health taking away all that I was, and all that I loved. It is like a big anchor holding me to one place, and a lifestyle that is difficult, but necessary. I would give all I own to have my health back for one year living on the road. Oh the miles we leave behind, what a wonderful concept!
I lived in a 84 Extended Dodge van for 5 years while I was a traveling tech for Indian Motorcycles. I was never in 1 place for more than 3 months so I decided on the van for 2 reasons, 1st when I left one place and went to the next I could just wheel my toolbox in the back, tie it down and leave and 2nd I could just jump in drive, I didn't need to hook anything up and haul it.
I lives away from the busy city about 60 miles, all my people in our community basically abandoned me unless they needed help (money, donation, free labor, birthday, sickness and funeral). Mr. Bob, your channel lift my spirit and boost my energy to keeps on going to better my surroundings. Happy New Year.
Had a 77 hightop tradesman myself. This is maybe my favorite of ALL vans I've seen on this channel. Even has a reinforced roof? wow, very rare..you've outdone yourself BOB, love it !
1990 I purchased a used 1980 Dodge half ton high roof van similar to his van similar wood interior wall comes with sink, cabinet, built-in stove propane. Two front seats become beds. Rear bench seat become big bed for 2 people. Spend $4,000 for it trouble free no breakdown except replaced one worn tire for $25 from K Mart installed. 5 years travel from Canada to Florida 2 times a year.
Great van build and demonstration. The creativity and craftsmanship is some of the best. I still see many of the 90s Dodge van on the road, they are very durable.
A couch and a bed. Everything you need in a compact area as well as outdoor accessories. Great imagination and skills. Also positive attitude with quality of life mindset.
The mini split. …didn’t know they ran on such low wattage. Well I’ll be checking out Amazon, and buying one in my future. Learn something every day . Great video Bob. Awesome build
Really cool, I love the raw wood look and open vibe to it right now. I really enjoy how everybody takes their own approach to tiny living, nomadic or not. I want both, gotta get some land before I can wander again. So for now just working and saving, staying dedicated to the goal. Going to play the rest by ear, how much time I spend at the land will change over time, same with how much wandering I do. Don't want to wander full-time anymore, gardening is too important to me. 43 now, hopefully a lot of time left to me to keep playing with the hobo gardener way and meet lots of fun people like this guy :)
I love Kirk's van. It took me years to get rid of my suburban and I used the money I got from the sale of it to buy the best van I could afford to buy with the money.
Kirk is awesome! I love how he chose and built what he wanted and what also worked for him! He's right how now people are not being so healthy because they do not have anything to look forward to.
I added a mini split in my 2006 Chevy Express van. If you find the interior unit too noisy there are alternative head units. Mine is wisper quiet. On mine, the compressor is mounted on the underside to the frame and even though there are rubber mounts you still hear it as the sounds will resonate through the steel frame. I think I still prefer it to mounting on the outside though. And one thing that I really got out of this that resonated with me is keeping yourself busy. I too love to build vans (53 years as a woodworker). It keeps my mind occupied and gives me something to look forward to. I've gotten into using cad programs and CNC machines, but I also do tons of hand work. You can do some amazing things these days with technology and portable setups. Track saws, etc. I use a shaper origin, which is a hand held CNC. For anything really custom I'll design the piece in CAD software and cut it out anywhere. More recent creations was a recirculating showers that run on a gallon of water and then a portable foldable shower base for outdoor showering. A lot of it for me is just in the doing. I love it. I travel over to Thailand once a year and even though it's paradise I'm bored out of my mind, and 30 hours worth of plane travel is exhausting. Again what I really got out of this video is doing what you love to do and living the life you want. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what that is.
Cool van. Many great ideas. I've learned on sailboats that Jabsco fans (or anything like them) anywhere in a space can move the warm or cool or fresh air all around the space. Always really good to have in a confined space. And they can be mounted where they are not in the way, then pivoted to get the air right where you need it. In China in almost every hostile, house, etc... I've stayed in there's a Heir split on the wall. They seem really reliable.
Cool set up. I have 2000 Chevy express G350 high top. I added a 12kBTU 110 mini split, the Ultra efficient Pioneer and put in an upright 85L Bodega frige/freezer. Love the solar set up .. brilliant. I too, am a former chef but do not cook in the van either, only coffee made sometimes before getting out the van in the early morning hours. I love camp cooking. outdoors!
really great set up Kirk buikd; the bed is a really cool idea - specious and comfortable. He did really well for himself. Very friendly nice guy too. Thanks for sharing Kirk and Bob and wish you many happy trails and adventures on the road. Greetings, JAson
I was a former personal chef, now I'm semi-retired and build Vans and such. I use them for a season then sell them. I like to build a new one each year
Some great features, many to which I am interested. At 2:40 he begins speaking of build principles that I hold in high regard- and I like his results. He's kind of sounding like maybe it could be for sale- and I would be interested.
"The whole idea is to live out of the van, not in it".....wise statement Kurt.....beautifully done.....true freedom and bliss of solitude.....
Great story phenomenal guy unbelievable van what a way to live

1) An old Dodge which will now run forever. 2) Live out of the van, not in the van...This man is pure genius...
Kirk's van is as 'articulate' as he is. Creative, original, organised, neat. I'm impressed!
@micheleparadis2808 very well said, I was going to say almost the exact thing. He is a talented man.

This is a BRILLIANT build!!!
Also- a 12 volt mini split!! I did NOT know that was a thing!

I like Kirk man......... Passionate, straight shooter...........
Very inspiring & creative! “WHY NOT”

Awesome 😊
Thank you for sharing, Bob. I love what he said about his situation, "I let the universe guide me."
Beautiful setup.
I really liked this guys "can do" attitude, realistic, down to earth DIY. Helluva nice van build!
Great van! He (and the van) seems like a goodman/character you'd run into in an apocalypse movie.
Great van build and demonstration. The creativity and craftsmanship is some of the best. I still see many of the 90s Dodge van on the road, they are very durable.
Freakin genius design for a van like this.

Very nice rig. And he built it himself hats off

First time I've seen a mirror under a bed as opposed to overhead.
I have the same cushion covers. I feel validated! 😂 The van looks nice and cosy.
