the dl30/31-in-1/surge clone's always been a very good tool at a very good price-- a wonderful option for those of us on a tighter budget. i'm happy to see that bibury isn't just sticking to selling surge clones and are actually taking small steps to improve the design. hopefully they keep going forward with this and we see some more innovation and competition in the multitool scene.

I like the closed scales, the skeletonized scales on the old dl30 makes it possible to cut yourself if you accidently get a finger in one of the openings when you close the blade.

I like those scales better than the original. The original gives more grip, for example if you're wearing gloves. So I can see that as an advantage to having them for that use. But I always thought the skeletonized cutouts were a little larger and sharper than necessary. I guess it depends on your usage. These scales give the tool a more comfortable grip in the bare hand. I have the SQT2048 20-in-1 with the same grip and it is very comfortable and prefer the look. It also came with a pocket clip that I bet fits this BI2049. I also have the Leatherman surge, which is an undeniably great too; the fit and finish is superb. But the price point and evolving innovations of these tool sets makes them a great buy.

Just received mine this afternoon. Bought it for $53 or so from a local online platform where I am at in Malaysia. It is very well made. The main blade is a bit stiff swinging out from its closed position. But other than that, this should give Leatherman something to think about as far as good quality 3rd party clones are concerned eating into its market share for the Surge class units. For $53 it comes with a decent pouch, spare wire cutter blades, the torx tool to disassemble the replaceable wire cutters, a pretty decent t-shank saw and a t-shank scalpel blade holder with 3 scalpel blades, 24 size. Already in the t-shank holder is a diamond and cross-hatch file. It also comes with a 7 pcs double 1/4 inch bit complete with a bit holder. I say a very reasonable set for the price. Can't wait untill Bibury releases a pocket clip for this unit, if ever!

There are many options of the Bibury Pro which is cheaper than this version but gives you most of the same things (with the old T-shank accessories, two basic slimmer saws). But there is a Bibury kit you could purchase with the scalpel for the t-shank and additional saw bits and a few other things for $20. So get the $35~ version and buy the add on pack for decent value as well.

If only they would put a pocket clip as standard and give the Surge a P3 series look.. That would be fantastic..
