    When she said, "I don't need the legal system to tell me this is wrong." That resonated with me. I am in a long court trial regarding abuse and I am being judged by old men who come from a misogynistic culture. It is torture. She is inspirational.

    ballet is an art form that requires a lot of physical touching so the boundaries are crossed very easily especially when children are not knowledgeable about what is sexual harassment and what is not. the teachers correct your posture by touching you, girls are partnered by male dancers that will have to place their hands very close to the breasts or crotch, and many times grab thighs to hold the girls up. when I started partnering classes, not once was there an explicit or discretional statement about how we as girls are allowed to voice when we are uncomfortable or to reach out to faculty for help when our private parts were "accidentally touched". we were never told to speak up or seek adults for psychological mentorship in any way either. i wonder whether male dancers were taught to avoid certain areas while partnering...
    also in the ballet and dance industry, most institutions put their male dancers on a pedestal. the men get promoted 5x faster most of the time. I know this is partly due to the demand of male dancers and excess of female dancers but that shouldn't be an excuse to coddle the boys when they are young and idolize them when they are grown when the same is not happening for the females.

      It happens everywhere. In China female dancers will dance with their boy friends or trusted partners. The admission rate by gender in academies is about 50:50 but the nature of dance makes it difficult to justify. Same touching for different partners may mean differently and when the accusation happens, the institutes prefer to cover it up.

    The title is the dark reality of being a dancer but this is also the dark reality of being a woman. How do other people, both men and women, look at this situation and find a way to justify how she was treated? This is something that women, by default, have to be on guard about each time we let a man into our lives. She handled the situation with so much poise and bravery, and her story will change the world.

      This is exactly why they will continue this pattern wherever they go! Essentially they’re basically unprofessional. These dangers exist in all occupations. Some men use that kind of stuff to bond with each other. Chauvinistic attitudes and secret hatred towards women. Best to avoid parties where there might be opportunities to exploit women. It can happen when a woman is interested in the attention of a colleague, or when a colleague keeps repeating contact with a female coworker where professional lines are broken or crossed. Women need to remember always that men who are ambitious in any level of reaching or maintaining positions will try to know all levels strengths and weaknesses of all colleagues to maintain competitive advantage. This in turn is the manifestation of male bonding with other colleagues. His despicable response shows no remorse for how he betrayed the trust of another person in the dance ‘company’ nor does he show any accountability for his unprofessional behavior. That in itself is a sign of someone who will continue to do this over and over because of chauvinistic tendencies towards women.

Also, the members who were fired have been re incorporated to the NYCB except for Zachary Catazaro, whom I believe did not want to come back. Even though he said such horrible things, no one has come for him. Realistically, it's very likely his misogyny seeped into his personal relationships. Who knows how. Really too bad the video is too short. This is too serious of a topic and this story is too complicated (complicated as in there are so many more men involved in that chain and so many more women who are victimized and so many more people involved in the cover up and a lot of those people had ties to the "investigation" done by the school) to squeeze it into a 12 minute video. This needs to be at least 45 minutes long and I just feel like anything less than that isn't doing the case Justice. There is just so much more to this story. The effect of an organization not developing & applying specific policies, and informing parents & students of the risks.
    Also, it's interesting how models, actors and dancers have to leave home at a young age - imho, it shouldn't have to be the case, and the familial departure (the same warning they give to a newly wed woman; moving away after marriage increases the risk of domestic abuse) only emphasizes the obvious regressions that would eventually take place, and the potential traps that would lie waiting for future victims.
    Hopefully in good time, these matters will be resolved.

    I can't say i'm surprised, if anyone remembers the movie Center Stage and the main characters of Jodi and Cooper. Cooper did that to Jodi. There was no investigation in the movie but it doesn't take that huge of a critical thinking exercise to see where it would go. I feel incredibly sad for this young lady but also admire her tremendous courage. To take on a company so large that this has been happening for many many years takes balls. Good for her. I hope others follow her brave example. I agree with people saying this is too short as it needs to be tackled on a more grand scale. It's highly personal and invasive so I understand why there was distance and respect for this young lady's privacy while still capturing the severity of the situation.

He wants this to be kept quiet, “this matter should be litigated in the courts, not in the press”, yet HE took and shared these photos PUBLICLY. It was his actions, the actions of the other perpetrators, and the actions of the school that warranted taking this public; not the victim’s. Had any ONE of the men who received copies of the photos of any ONE of the victims stepped forward and said, “this is wrong,” this might not have gotten to this point. Had any ONE of the men not participated and encouraged this behavior, it might not have gotten to this point. The blame lies on the part of the perpetratorS, PERIOD. Alexandra is so brave, more power to her! I do hope more women are encouraged to come forward, but I also know how hard that can be. I was assaulted at 16 and I never reported it. I got close to reporting it once and was told by a male family member, “why would you want to ruin his life?” We need more brave women like this young woman to step forward and bring attention to these types of egregious behaviors and educate more young men and young women about body autonomy and consent.

    This does not surprised me. I took ballet for 2yrs. The hard work and artistry are no joke. Neither is the abuse of power. There are predators in every industry, and those predators make dam sure that those they prey upon are either too scared to come forward, or left with no recourse.

  • @thoughtsofaleo2916
    @thoughtsofaleo2916 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    She's not wrong in saying that it's very much a culture thing. You live and die as a company by the donors you appeal to and the boys are lauded far more often than the girls, where a boy can have as much talent as a girl's left toe and be promoted before her. I'm absolutely not excusing the actions that they did in any way because they're despicable. But it's sadly not too surprising that in a lot of cases, boys and donors will get slaps on the wrists at most, because of the power and value they hold.
    In a lot of ways, companies will not necessarily condone the gross actions of its donors and male dancers. It's more that they'll simply look the other way. Which, in itself, is an action and condoning it. Or even worse, sweep it under the rug. The worst thing about ballet is that, from early on, it's an unspoken rule that you grin and bear just about everything. Speaking out is not the norm, nor is expected.
    That's not to say that things aren't changing. The Me Too movement thankfully rocked a lot of the ballet world, but we are still far from done. This mindset and culture still exists today in many many companies and it needs to be carved out from the roots, which is what a lot of companies don't want to do. But the important thing is that it is changing, slowly but steadily, and it's thanks to people like Alexandra Waterbury who are speaking out against it and demanding change. It's an absolute travesty that her case was dismissed, though. I do hope she receives justice in some way soon.

      Exactly my thought. I‘m from Europe, and the murder of Amanda Knox‘ roommate was a HUGE story here. And Amanda‘s behavior was just disgusting, she never talked about poor Miranda who got stabbed to death, only about herself. And Meredith‘s parents said on live TV that they had wanted to talk to Amanda, but she refused that. Amanda never helped to find out what happened to her roommate, instead she wrote a book about herself full of self-pity. I don’t buy it that she is the the empathetic and caring person who she is playing here.

And my core belief is they speak the way they do because it inflates their self value. To bolster their masculinity of each other and very, very much how they appear amongst each of themselves. It is toxic to discuss women that have a self worth in an unworthy manner. They are to immature with their own sexual energy.

    A lot has changed since 2018. If you listen to the recent interview from Jonathan Stafford on Conversations on dance podcast, he's made efforts to revamp the company atmosphere and school, which is admirable. Keep in mind also that she wasn't a ballet dancer with New York City Ballet, but that's always how these stories are told to skew the view of the viewers. She was a student at the School of American Ballet, but she sued NYCB.
