As someone who recovered from an eating disorder. She does not have one, she’s in full control and she’s so happy being mindful and careful for her athleticism.
Catstarr i know you weren’t asking me, but as someone who has gone through the same thing: lots of ~therapy~. the only way to debunk an e.d.’s incorrect ideologies is to learn the facts and have your mind rewired. if someone unfortunately doesn’t have the money for therapy tho, it’s otherwise important to avoid triggers, and avoid things online or in the media about what “healthy” is. healthy looks different for everyone. and lastly, you have to WANT to recover in order to recover. you won’t get anywhere if you’re holding yourself back and it’s not YOU making the decision to get better. it’s your life and your choice.❤️ and of course remember that recovery is not linear, there will be slip-ups, and it takes a long time, but it’s possible for anyone to get there. i hope this helped xo :)
I've watched this so many times, just completely fascinated with the way she talks about food. I noticed about the third time through that she never talks about wanting her body to look thinner or different but instead feeling the best that she can. Idk it makes me smile.
Everyone is talking about her relationship with food. But what I really love about this is she seems to just enjoy doing stuff on her own, like the hike and her evening meals. She has a great relationship with herself
Yes! But the good realationship with food may also be the result of her relationship with herself. I figured out when I have a good relatiobship with myself, I don't stress about food at all.
My friends used to think it was weird that I would ever want to see a movie by myself or go to the library. They couldnt comprehend that people can sometimes enjoy their own company
A smart tip I heard from a student ballerina in my school: *"If it feels like a diet, you're not doing it right. It's not about dieting, it's about self-control and common sense."* Another great tip my grandma, who recently retired from ballet, taught my siblings and I: *"Don't eat until you're full, eat until you're satisfied"*
I looked her up and turns out she co-founded the company where she dances and serves as its executive director. A smart cookie with lots of willpower. Big up!
counting calories while doing a middle split efortlessly and eating a granola bar. that's the most badass thing i saw someone doing this entire quarantine.
@@carolineviolet9092 it’s not that deep sis ... her job is to be a fit athlete lol she has to be fit and eat healthy , there’s nothing wrong with being disciplined. lmaoo y’all have an issue with anything and everything i swear . she has a very healthy relationship with food stop hating .
An interesting approach: She's always snacking, she eats out too, but she's smart and know what can make her feel better, what is tasty AND helps her with her goal. That is smart. It's a good method.
I like that synopsis. She truly isn’t eating horribly but it’s a lot of prepared food, which can be higher in salt and preservatives. It’s a trade off she’s willing to make
I think the reason people get upset when she says she loses weight through counting calories is because unfortunately people are looking for a quick fix. Once they realize that the trick is simple (but still requires a lot of self-control and dedication) they immediately lose interest.
Ariel Hunt So true! It’s the same reason fad diets have always been and still are so prevalent. Simple science and hard work just aren’t as appealing I guess!
@Harry Sachs Not even going to get into the practical considerations, because there are many, but the biggest problem with this is that "for a few months" has an end date. Unless you think of it as a lifestyle change rather than a temporary sacrifice, you won't succeed.
@@ramywiles I don't think they meant stop eating healthy after those few months. I think they were referring to eating less. You don't want to be in a perpetual state of eating less. Eventually, you do need to stop losing weight and work on maintaining instead.
idk what it is about this video but i’ve watched it a million times. I think it’s her authenticity; she doesn’t sugar coat her reality, and she’s deeply about what she does. First time i watch this was when I was probably 15 and i’m 21 now. I always found it inspiring ❤
Same here!! I watched it for the first time yesterday and I’m watching it for a 4th time. Really inspiring and I appreciate how straight forward and real she is.
Do you know what, I'm so happy to see calorie counting portrayed in a positive light. Everyone links calorie counting to anorexia or disordered eating but if you eat your daily calories, your body will stay at a healthy range and you will still get to indulge in foods you love.
M J Exactly!! Sometimes people that struggle with being underweight need to calorie count to keep their weight in a good healthy range. PEople don’t want to believe that tho-always think eating disorder
Yes! I need calorie counting because if I don't I tend to overeat by a lot. It's the only way for me to keep a healthy weight. I use my fitnesspal, and I even think it's kinda fun.
this was definitely an eye opening video. She has a great relationship with food, I think. It's all numbers. She isn't suffering for her art. She eats to feel full and do what she loves the best that she can. She eats to live. It's actually pretty inspiring. And damn if I were getting paid the way it seems she is, I'd work hard on my diet too. She's got a nice place in LA and a sports car and she shops at whole foods. All day she does what she loves and she seems very content. Sounds like a great life.
TheChickenRiceBowl have you been a professional athlete or dancer because not only was that a very judgemental comment but it sounded like an uneducated one as well.
J. J. If you're talking to me I'm 5'8.5, 115 lbs, and have been bullied relentlessly all my life by insecure and jealous fat women. But, sure. Go off, whatever helps you sleep at night.
@@rodolfogiogervasio2169 R1234 G5678 I'm not belittling your past disorder, as I sympathize heavily, but you and some of ur peers developing a disorder as a result of counting calories doesnt mean that counting calories necessarily cause low self esteem; the 'disorder' in eating disorders is because patients idolize food, and prioritize it over social behavior. That is where the mental illness comes in... not everyone gets an eating disorder because they have been taught earlier in childhood how to control their priorities. Just a small comment, in the future, it might seem more informal and logical if you did not use personal emotions to generalize an entire topic in an argument... ;)
because shes an animal, her mind and soul are bend together shes whole and strong thats why her confidence is always on point as shes focused on herself and her body
Huh? Because TH-cam vloggers are attention whores with no actual talents. They're all a bunch of narcissistic and self centered ego maniacs fueling the next generation of brain dead teens.
Ok, so I went through an eating disorder based on calorie counting, and it was so different from what she is doing. She's staying healthy and really controlling what goes into her body, while working out and she's doing so without starving. I never knew calorie counting could be done like this, always thought of it as something negative after what I went through, but she's doing it in a very healthy and positive way, it's just important not to lose control and listening to what your body requieres.
Get a fitbit. Tells you what your burning in a day. Eat under that. I burn about 400 calories in the gym. So I burn about 2100 calories a day at 5'4. If I don't work out I barely burn 1700 calories. I lost 80 lbs. I eat what ever I want but UNDER my burn rate.
Alot of people need calorie counting to make sure they eat enough, 200 calories not enough for a day can stop your weight from fluctuating for example 2000 calories a day will maintain your weight but 1800 calories you will gain weight and have less energy and the same with 2200 excess calories just weigh you down. I know how many calories I need in a day to have peak energy levels withought stacking on weight, because I have a physical job I will get too exausted if I haven't eaten the right amount, calorie counting can be a really useful skill
I've also struggled with an ED with obsessive calorie counting, and I am personally better off by doing intuitive eating instead of counting calories to maintain weight. Counting calories is not advisable for everyone who has dealt (or is dealing at the moment) with an ED - sure it can be healthy if done right, but that's like saying "just keep your units of alcohol to a healthy amount, it's doable!" to someone who suffers from alcoholism; it just doesn't quite work that way. If you're a professional athlete, then it is part of your job so ensure your body is performing to a certain degree, and as she explained the physical performance is directly linked to the amount of weight the body is carrying. As someone who is not an athlete, and who has suffered with an ED in the past, no I won't advise for myself counting calories even if it can be done in a healthy way (by others).
I really like your analogy. It's a good way to explain why counting calories might be okay for some, but probably not for someone with or recovering from an ED. Nicely done.
What she's doing IS what calories counting is! A healthy way to lose weight consciously even for non athletes! losing weight is just math and calories counting is the ultimate tool for that! it's just that some people took it and twisted it into something that it's not.. it all depends on how you're introduced to it and by whom/what! I was horrifed when I learned how its used by some. That's definitly not the way and is sure to cause some problems.
as someone with an eating disorder, i'm jealous of her. i'm not jealous of her body, i'm jealous of her healthy relationship with food. i wish i had that
I know it can be hard to see someone like this and think it can never be you. Just know that I totally believe in you, and the power to overcome your disorder is already within you. Sometimes it can be hard to find and bring out of yourself, but eventually you will get there. I hope you are doing well, and even if you aren’t, I wish the best for you in your future. 💜
People associate counting calories with anorexia and such but it's not always like that. This video showed that perfectly. You don't have to be hungry, it just means that you're slightly more aware of what goes in your body.
I know what anorexia is please read what i said carefully:Well bodybuilders also count their calories and they AREN'T really anorexic. Do you now see the ARE NOT? Now look at her post:"People associate counting calories with anorexia and such" enough said.
Yes ....... and in tune with what your body really needs to function optimally ..... It took me a while to realise that I was consuming more than my body actually requires ... still working on getting it right.. depending on overall anatomy some need more, some need less... counting calories and consuming quality nutrients is a good way to go....
As a former figure skater, I can tell you that this girl does not have an eating disorder. She is doing calorie counting perfectly as it should be done. I was afraid that this video was going to perpetuate the stereotype that all ballet dancers/figure skaters/gymnasts are anorexic and it’s just not true. These sports are so incredibly physically demanding that the simple truth is that you won’t last long if you have an eating disorder. You’ll be so weak that your performance will suffer or you’ll get yourself injured. When you’re an athlete, your body is your tool and you have to keep it running just right. Yes it’s very controlled - but this isn’t for the average person who isn’t an athlete. Not to say that there aren’t girls who have eating disorders who engage in those sports but it’s really not the norm.
People think artistic sports aren't as difficult as they are so they think "they must be starving themselves if they're that lean," but really, they're burning far more calories than perceived
It took me a minute to process this. Being a guy I assumed you meant Erectile Dysfunction and I was like - da fuq? On a serious note - sorry you have some struggles. Hope you heal 💙
@@getnasty08 omg i laughed a lot more than i should have as someone with ana i always have associated eds with the disorder i had no idea it could mean that
Honestly though it would start with “so in the morning I eat one blueberry, skinned, so that I cut down on my blah blah blah.” But nah she’s like “ya so I eat a corn dog and rice for breakfast”😂 loved it
Ballet dancers eat A LOT, it's a myth the whole ''anorexic'' thing. No ballet studio will hire an anorexic dancer. For people who work out about 6 hours a day, they eat way more than people think, it's just a full body workout so they look thin but it's all pure muscle :)
This is amazing! She doesn't live to eat, she eats to live. Which is something I think a lot of people confuse, including myself. She has a very positive relationship with food in that she eats what she loves but doesn't make eating the main focus of her day! I really admire and envy her for her healthy understanding of food and calories! 💛💛💛
I come back to this video every few months, it soothes me. I just love her thought process behind things. She makes it simple. She’s so healthy and positive. I love everything about this woman
my name is tara okay she's really NOT. Just basic brunette and skinny. What's so special about her? No stand out facial features. Just basic. You're reaching. Is she your cousin?
Mya Rodriguez that’s probably a bit too fast depending on how much you weigh. It isn’t really sustainable and you could lose a good bit muscle and slow down your metabolism a lot
Yeah it was easy, to be fair I train to stand on one to throw kicks for mma fights🤷♂️ and I’m not light headed from starving myself (unless I’m cutting)
I always get stared at by friends and family while I'm dieting because my diet is really effective, but includes donuts while their diets usually are pretty strict. Mine is too, I just choose to have donuts in it. . .
She also does excersize. I have a bad knee and some ballet stretches help strengthen the muscles around my knee so it doesn't go out faster. My legs burn like crazy after just a few.
On the day she ate the bowl of cereal, when you don't count the calories she burned, she consumed almost 2300 calories!! She planned her meals not to make sure she eats less to reach her goal weight, but to make sure she eats enough to meet her goal and function as an athlete. She also has a relatable approach to her diet - it's not all avocado toast and chia-mango-hemp smoothies, it's food she actually enjoys eating while also being good fuel for her body. This is the healthiest relationship to food I've ever seen.
Yes! And also the fact that she's only losing 1.5 lbs in 3 weeks, which is a very gradual and healthy way to lose weight. There's no crash-dieting or extreme measures here. It's a great way to do it because as an athlete (and everyone else!), you never ever want to lose any muscle and when you crash diet, that's what always happens. This way, she's losing the weight whilst retaining muscle. She's also not eating 'diet food' but just normal, regular food, as long as she's not going over the daily allotted amount.
recovered anorexic here, I think she has a very healthy approach to how she reaches her performance weight, and you can tell that she is obviously in good shape
Ergo Toxicosis as someone that is a professional dancer as well, not just a company member but a soloist as well, “performance weight” is not a thing anymore and this is not what dancers look like anymore.
gluecks. piratin no worries! Yes dancers and companies of all styles have a much more relaxed opinion of what bodies should look like. There isn’t really a “look” anymore. Ballet companies used to put a lot of emphasis on what a body must look like in order to “function properly” and “perform its best” but it’s different for everyone. Not that this woman isn’t strong and healthy, but it sends a bad image about what dance is. Now, I find most dancers are very muscular, have their natural curves, they have breasts and glutes.
gluecks. piratin I think that lots of people assume that most ballet dancers, or any company members in general must be extremely healthy. But in reality, actually so many of them don’t begin puberty until way after a typical human because their body is lacking necessary things to begin that change. Now, companies recognize that a massive change needed to take place.
Eric Hui she’s eating more so when she exercises by dancing her muscle gets leaner and tighter. If you look at anyone who maintains big muscles they eat a lot and frequently so they burn fat but keep muscle
the crucial difference between her counting calories and disordered calorie counting is that she doesnt view calories as harmful. they are neutral. it's just fact. the negative relationship with food comes in when you're afraid of or feel guilty about calories
Omg yes this is the perfect way to describe it! It’s just neutral math and facts. It’s the same as budgeting money. If you want to save money you have to know how much money you have, and the prices of everything you’re buying
I agree with you but I have struggled with eating disorders for around 7 years and I think why people say calories don't matter is because people put too much value into the calories they eat in a day rather than the nutritional value and despite the nutrients your body actually needs. The woman in this video is an excellent role model because she obviously has such a healthy relationship with food and exercise. Calories matter but they aren't everything and I think many people either forget that or they don't realise it. Also congrats on your weight loss journey and I don't mean to offend or upset anyone I just am trying to understand everyone's POV. Also eating disorders didn't start because calories were invented. They are mental illnesses and that's what I think everyone forgets a little. I wish you all the best on your journey. Don't give up! xx
I don’t even know her, I don’t know many professional ballerinas - but I’m so proud of them. Seriously, the dedication is unreal and mentally + physically demanding. Props to ballerinas the real tough guys.
I like the "I don't starve myself, I need to lose 1,5 pounds and I'll be there in 3 weeks and that's just fine" attitude... not that I expected her to starve herself, I just like her approach to this
@@jones2277 I think that's why she's so into the counting calories approach. As long as you pay attention and do the math, you're guaranteed the weight loss. Way better than getting on the scale everyday and feeling like it isn't working just because it's slow.
I'm actually trying the slow and healthy approach myself. Rather than trying the quick fixes (which haven't helped me so far), I'm actually eating better and cooking for myself. I get fruit, veggies, and meat, plus healthy fats everyday. I'm finally ok with only losing 1-2 pounds a week. I've wasted YEARS on "quick fixes"; now I'll spend 1 year on a lifestyle change for permanent results. Slow is best!
@@theahjensen but she doesn't see it like that. She is completely professional. It must be great to step back and see your body as a tool to accomplish your dreams
@@Dropthatpickle that isn't true. some studios might not accept you if you aren't necessarily on the skinny side but it just all depends on the proper muscle, flexibility, and how much cardio you can take. of course, being lighter would have an advantage but that would just mean you'd have to work harder than others. a good studio would take someone in based on their skill, how determined they are and how hard they work, not because of their body type. it would look better but it isn't really a rule anymore.
This video changed my life: I'm down 16+ pounds and going strong because there's no guessing anymore - I just count. And actually, my mom is now counting calories for the first time ever and finally losing the weight she's been fighting for years. No one wants to hear it, but all you have to do is count.
it's a huge expenditure of mental energy. I guess it's not the quantity but the quality of the food you eat. It doesn't work for everyone, for most people it's useless and they gain it all back. The more you try to control food, the more food controls you
I've considered counting but sadly my parents and doctors dont allow it/ recommend it because of my history with eating disorders, but i think ill do it anyways cuz ive gained 70 pounds in the past year :(
Counting calories 1,000% works if you are just trying to loose weight or maintain a thin frame. She is not trying to build curves, muscle and she’s not lifting so I think she’s 100% right! She knows what she’s doing and it’s working lovely for her. Not to mention her skin and hair look very healthy so she doesn’t look like she’s missing any meals!
Calorie counting can be super helpful when trying to gain weight/put on muscle too! Helps you realise how little you're eating but also highlights what foods you're eating and identify things you could add to your diet to improve muscle growth. Typically the rule is subtract 200 from your calorie "base" (something calculated based on your age/height, etc) if you want to lose weight and add 200 to your base if you want to gain muscle :)
a w people forget that muscles weigh some much more than fat, even as a plus size dancer I count calories and do more gentle exercise because bulky muscles can make it especially difficult to move and jump.
Alexania you are right. I have thin hair myself, but it started to look like hers when I were on the lowest weight, and it was really bad when I became slightly underweight. Even now when I am back to ok weight, it did not grow back, looks like hers. Hair is the first thing to show us whether we need more. You can tell she is in the lowest scale of normal weight for her height.
I must admit, I saw "ballerina" and "counting calories" and I had a very different idea of what I was going to watch than what I actually saw. Pleasantly surprised by how healthy and balanced this was.
How lovely and articulate she is. Surprised by how much processed food she eats though, I was expecting her to be ultra-healthy, nice to know she eats ready meals like many people do! Loving her journal of what she eats/exercises - such a good idea!
kamal gujral processed food isn’t necessarily unhealthy! As an athlete, I eat whatever foods make me feel the best to train, whether that’s a microwave lasagne for dinner or a salad 🥰
I went from 310 pounds to 125 pounds. It was all counting calories. I’ve kept it off for 16 years. It works! I’ve learned more about nutrition, so what I ate then differs from what I eat now. But I still count calories!
if you want to figure out how many calories you should be eating, download the app "myfitnesspal" and put in all your info for it to generate a number for you!.. Honestly the amount of calories you should eat to lose weight really depends on you & how much you want to lose per week. I cut my cals down to 1270 a day to lose 2 lbs/week, but like she says in the video, you can eat a lot of food even while restricting, as long as its healthy + has protein to keep you full :^) plus if you exercise you can eat more!
xmalfan *and* xxx boi I've found the best way to track your personal calorie needs is to calculate your BMR (basic metabolic rate) you can find calculators on the internet! Basically what a BMR is, is the amount of calories your body naturally burns if you stayed in bed all day with no physical activity. Whatever your BMR is, it's probably a good amount of calories to eat if you're trying to lose weight, just be semi-active during the day, do cardio when possible, and lift weights (building a little muscle boosts metabolism b/c muscle needs calories to maintain)
this is the video that has gotten me back into ballet. now i'm on pointe, recovered from my unhealthy relationship with food, have more healthy confidence than ever, and just overall happy again. weird how one person can change your life without you even knowing them
A hard pill to swallow: She can eat what she wants because she does so much exercise throughout the day as a ballerina that she burns a lot of what she eats.
Honestly, even if u ate 1800 calories a day and only did 45 minutes of exercise you can get really lean as well. You don’t need to be as lean as her, since it’s literally her job to stay in shape, I think most people will be quite happy to be even 10lbs heavier than where she is.
Florence Xu 4 weeks late but i’m going to share my stuff as an athlete. The ballerina counting her calories is actually very helpful for her sport. This is because she is making sure that she doesn’t over or under eating so that she doesn’t loose her muscle or gain fats. Having as little fat and thin but very strong muscles makes you very strong and very fast. This way, she can be more efficient in her sport. To add this, this method is what I’ve been doing as a long distance runner.
Do not understand the logic that it is ok to kill plants but not animals? Where does this logic come from? plants have been on this earth longer then most animal life, some of the plants have a higher gene pool then humans. We can not exist with out them, so why is it ok to kill them and not mammals? It really depends where you live and what can grow in your environment and what animal protein lives in the same vicinity. Being relived of the guilt of having to kill something- by going to some grocery store, who brings in produce from around the world, when it is not even in season. Is this not even worse then eating meat? Life is way more complex the just becoming a vegetarian or vegan to ease the social conscience. It is very different if it is a religious purpose but most of these religions were based in climates that made this life possible. An example of this is northern north america or any were where it is cold. In northern climates not too much vegetarianism exist all over the world. These religious groups would have been extinct years ago.
If you really do care about plants, then you should cut down on the animal products, at least meat:) The animal has to eat a lot more feed to produce meat for you to eat that it is for you to just actually eat the plant. To short it down, you "kill" a lot less plants if you dont eat meat. The argument you're using is total and utter bullshit :)
If you care about plants you care about deforestation right? Well that often is a result of farmers expanding to create land for the animals that you eat. Maybe you care about the planet as well? The number one cause of global warming is the meat industry. It's not even really about the killing of animals. It's the fact that in America 99% of meat comes from factory farms where the wellbeing of the animals are thrown out the window and they live lives based on suffering. The companies do not care if any of the animals are sick or dieing they only care about how many are still alive. These animals do not live natural lives, they do not live as they should in the wild. We, as humans, have manipulated they're evolution for our benefit, to make the most amount of money. It has gone far past the point of our survival. Oh also, if we stopped eating meat, then there would be enough food for everyone.
I love this. I love how, with all the fads and technologies out there, she just sticks with basics. Pen, paper, calculator. So basic, and so right! Her diet is very real-world with the microwave meals and so forth. Extraordinarily graceful athlete. Absolutely fascinating :)
MsCleverable I totally agree. Simple arithmetic. So many people resist the obvious. I hope people realize from this that you can enjoy eating and still maintain a healthy weight. What an inspiration.
I was a ballet dancer for 13 years and where I was taught was a very bad environment I had a eating disorder And stopped and left the studio when it became too serious and realized I needed help The way she takes control of this and it makes her happy is so so good and it makes me happy to see someone have a good experience
@@Fonzi79 I understand 100%. What I do is I drink about 6 cups of water a day and I avoid foods with lots of sodium in it. I also stop eating after 3pm and do yoga before bed.
I weighed 195 in February 2020, and hit 150 in January 2021. That’s about 1 lb of consistent weight loss per week (with some peaks & valleys along the way). It wouldn’t have been possible without calorie counting! Keep it up folks, any progress is good progress!
She is so practical. This really opened my eyes, and I loved her attitude and down to earth look on calories and eating. I would love to have her as a friend!!!
Calorie counting does not equal an eating disorder. I think people don’t realize just how important counting calories is. You may think you’re consuming 1,600 calories a day, but when you don’t accurately count your calories (this includes oils, butters, sauces, dressing), you can’t be sure. Most of us aren’t consuming one serving of pasta (trust me, it’s tiny), we aren’t eating one portion of chips.. we are eating for several people. That causes massive weight gain, and you don’t realize it until it’s too late. As they say.. it’s easier to gain than it is to lose. If you feel like nothing is working, no matter how hard you workout.. count your calories. See just how much you’ve been eating.
Doesn’t Matter totally agree. It doesnt apply to everyone but counting calories helps me to have a feeling how much i should eat... i was overweight before i started counting and realized that i ate too fast and too much. I have lost 8kg by counting calories so far 👍
Calorie counting helped me get over my eating disorders. It helped me realize I was starving myself but also gave me a realistic image of how I treated my body and what I was depriving myself of.
a w That's on the very small side - and only for a starter, too. Most sources consider a main meal pasta dish of penne, to be about 57g dry weight. That's closer to 55-60 penne pasta pieces. Even that's only 200 calories - which is fine for a main dish, as long as you don't go crazy with the sauces.
Doesn’t Matter what’s so frustrating is how one portion tends not to be filling enough for an active person :( so i just tend to eat a bigger portion of a healthier meal
just my naive opinion, but Ive always assumed ballerina with high society and upper class lifestyle. Shes eating packaged foods, corn dog for breakfast, and is pretty damn chill. Sure her lifestyle isnt cheap, but shes pretty laid back and awesome.
Yes well, ballerinas do not make much money, they preform for high society, they aren’t in an economically prosperous field themselves. They’re performers.
@@Mournful_night It's really not fair, they should get paid a lot more for what they do. Do you know if it varies by company or position? I remember watching the channel of the ballerina Alison Stroming and she lived in a super nice NYC apartment.
In another lifetime if I wasn't 5'1", I didn't develop scoliosis, and if my family had the money for dance lessons I would have been a ballerina like I dreamed of
She is everything I imagine a stereotypical professional ballerina to be. Type A, graceful, beautiful, well-muscled, toned yet svelte, exacting, dedicated to practice. It's remarkable, but also frightful in a way. She also seems very down-to-earth and well-adjusted, though, so that's really great.
TH-cam has been recommending this video to me for months now. The algorithm probably saw my constant calorie focused content and binge eating videos and decided to send this video my way. I don't know why I have not clicked on it until now. I feel like I have just had a revelation about my own relationship with food and weight loss in general. Seeing all these comments that feel the same really brings it home. The idea that you CAN have this kind of relationship with food is so refreshing. Yes, she is counting calories but she is also being mindful and listening to her body. I don't know how to explain exactly how this video makes me feel. I already know this is going to be a comfort video for me.
Peter Sagan, so you say 20-30% of vegans live longer than "meat eaters" (even though the vast majority of people who eat meat also include fruits, vegetables, diary in their diet etc which would mean they're omnivorous... Can't say I've ever really encountered someone who just eats meat) but do they live longer because of their diet or is it related more to social and environmental factors as many people who become vegan do it out of a lifestyle option and not as a necessity when compared to omnivores who probably couldn't sustain, afford or be fulfilled with a vegan diet.
Peter Sagan .... Again with a stat suggesting non-meat eaters tend to live longer implying it is largely because of their diet. What if those people in Japan who prefer a vegetarian diet live longer than others because of other factors like their lifestyle, wealth, living conditions etc? When people say vegans/vegetarians live longer than people who include meat in their diet it is too vague and too many variables are involved just to credit the difference based on diet alone. If a group of vegans and omnivores shared many similarities like health, occupation, wealth, living conditions and you're comparing their life expectancy then their diet would be more indicative since it's the major difference between their lifestyles.
So true, my roommate in in college, performing arts college, she was a dance major and ate Oreos, full fat milk, Mexican food, and during her time of the month an entire chocolate cake.!!!! God love her!!! She burned it all off dancing and staying active/busy!!
My mom is a former ballet dancer and she ate full-fat everything. If she had a salad the dressing was not non-fat or Lite. She would eat like 6-8 times a day. She's still petite. I love that her parents allowed her to pursue her dream. Man she has her calories down to a science. Really helps me see calorie counting in a whole new light.
not really. she just goes to Trader Joe's and buys all the packaged meals. a healthy relationship with food is knowing where your food came from and it's effect on the body as well as the planet. she is only looking at calories... not once did she mention micronutrients. I'm surprised as a ballerina she is not interested in bettering her athletic performance and recovery with the foods she eats. it should be a science.
what people perceive to be healthy is different for everyone. my personal opinion is that she has a very balanced diet whether or not she uses calorie counting as a method to achieve that. i can assure you that there are healthy and fit people who don't look at micronutrients either but stick to eating healthy foods. im coming from a place where calorie counting has evolved into an eating disorder and obsession, so what i am seeing here is someone who has instead used calorie counting as an indication of her progress but has not allowed calories to overtake/control her life (in the sense she isn't going to freak out for going over her calorie limit). so in this sense, she has a healthy relationship with food MENTALLY.
Yes you should totally nitpick at her for not mentioning micronutrients, even though she's eating a family-size bowl of salad with nearly every meal and ordering things like fish when she dines out. /eyeroll
Its really nice to see that she's not going hard on herself and that she eats regularly. She's healthy and it makes me smile about that she doesn't push herself.
After watching this video about 7 months ago, I decided to try counting calories, as other diets I tried didn't seem to work for me. Fast forward to today, I'm down 30 lbs and feel better than ever. Best part is I didn't have to cut out any of my favorite foods completely.
@@lechewinggum8491 you will have to figure that out yourself, it depends on your height and weight. I used Myfitnesspal, it's a website/app that will help you determine your calories you need to eat based on how much weight you want to lose. You can log your food and keep track there too.
@@vi5360 Or you could have a perfectly normal experience like me and the ballerina dancer. Everyone is different. Don't discourage people from trying something new, that could ultimately help them be healthier...
The thing is: she eats something she can measure in calories. It is a corn dog with a nutritional table. This is difficult when you eat , lets say, an organic vegan homemade blueberry cake bought at a cafe or farmers market. They don't have a nutrition fact label with calories and all that info. That is the only downside of counting calories.
If you make something by scratch, and you have a decent food weight scale, you can also still count calories. But yeah I can see such a busy professional deterred by that route. Its all about the energy intake and balance.
If you really cared about losing weight, then you’d only eat things that you can count. There isn’t a secret to weight loss. Take in less than you burn. People sit down and eat a small pizza for one meal that has 1500 calories in it and wonder why they don’t lose weight.
Yeah that’s why she eats so much prepackaged food so she just knows. There’s a diff between eating healthy and cutting calories to lose weight they are not one in the same
If you cook by yourself you can count calories too. I prefere to cook myself then eat precooked food. It is so much tasty! Just a little to get use to it, but is worse it!
Man every time I see a video of ballet and watch a ballet it just makes me so sad that I'm not a ballerina and that I didn't get to stay in ballet. Ballet is so damn beautiful.
Actually she probably does use MFP. They probably discussed it and decided to show her using pen and paper because otherwise this whole thing would then turn into a giant ad for the app.
Also, punching things into a phone is not as visually interesting as a big notebook and pen. On the other hand, there is something satisfying about the tactical element of writing things in a notebook. Perhaps she prefers it to using a phone. Plus the MFP interface can be sort of annoying sometimes.
This was absolutely fascinating. As a young girl, I often dreamt about being a ballerina (as did a lot of us!). Watching Black Swan gave us the impression ballerinas are dangerously obsessive about their weight and looks. This ballerina IS focused on her weight but solely to ensure she can do her job properly while still being healthy and enjoying a social life. What a dedication ballet dancers have, the next time I watch the ballet I'll have a higher appreciation of what they do for their art. Thanks again for this wonderful insight.
A lot of people don't realize that she is working out 6-12 hours a day. Most of us are working desk jobs and not burning a ton of calories. So you either need to really push yourself to do some sort of work out every day or cut your calories down. This took a while for me to figure out.
@spirals 73 like the girl in the vid, calorie counting! For some people exercise doesn't change anything. Calorie counting usually is something reliable to lose extra weight :D
As someone who recovered from an eating disorder. She does not have one, she’s in full control and she’s so happy being mindful and careful for her athleticism.
You don't have to answer this. But how did you recover?

She has a really charming personality, is so intelligent and well spoken, while at the same time being very warm. Lovely woman
A smart tip I heard from a student ballerina in my school: *"If it feels like a diet, you're not doing it right. It's not about dieting, it's about self-control and common sense."*
Another great tip my grandma, who recently retired from ballet, taught my siblings and I: *"Don't eat until you're full, eat until you're satisfied"*
great advice!
Brilliant. I've been beating myself up about everything I eat these days. Great things to remember
thank you!
I loved the first advice.
But isn't full and satisfied pretty close?

Not really. Full is when you can’t eat anymore. Satisfied is when you’re not hungry anymore.

An interesting approach: She's always snacking, she eats out too, but she's smart and know what can make her feel better, what is tasty AND helps her with her goal. That is smart. It's a good method.
usagilamperouge thats such a good summary of what she said, this is actually so inspiring im gonna screen shot 😬
I mean she's snacking because she's burning a lot of calories, if someones not really active they shouldn't be having snacks often.

She needs a man that can do homefood for her :)
@@bltnbros122 how do you know she's not a lesbian?
I think the reason people get upset when she says she loses weight through counting calories is because unfortunately people are looking for a quick fix. Once they realize that the trick is simple (but still requires a lot of self-control and dedication) they immediately lose interest.
Ariel Hunt So true! It’s the same reason fad diets have always been and still are so prevalent. Simple science and hard work just aren’t as appealing I guess!
@Harry Sachs Tell me about it, I'd eat so much in a day and I'd gain nothing
@Harry Sachs Not even going to get into the practical considerations, because there are many, but the biggest problem with this is that "for a few months" has an end date. Unless you think of it as a lifestyle change rather than a temporary sacrifice, you won't succeed.
I like how honest she is about her lifestyle and food intake.
@@ramywiles I don't think they meant stop eating healthy after those few months. I think they were referring to eating less. You don't want to be in a perpetual state of eating less. Eventually, you do need to stop losing weight and work on maintaining instead.

this was definitely an eye opening video.

Just a small comment, in the future, it might seem more informal and logical if you did not use personal emotions to generalize an entire topic in an argument... ;)

That's definitly not the way and is sure to cause some problems.
as someone with an eating disorder, i'm jealous of her. i'm not jealous of her body, i'm jealous of her healthy relationship with food. i wish i had that
yeah. i really wish it was that easy
thats how i felt the whole time i was watching this
Same
I know it can be hard to see someone like this and think it can never be you. Just know that I totally believe in you, and the power to overcome your disorder is already within you. Sometimes it can be hard to find and bring out of yourself, but eventually you will get there. I hope you are doing well, and even if you aren’t, I wish the best for you in your future. 💜

Yes ....... and in tune with what your body really needs to function optimally .....
I do wonder if this is why so many of the young skaters are getting injured now.
That said, 1600 seems damn low for an athlete. That's what I eat, as a coach potato, to lose weight!
I’m also a figure skater and I had the same thoughts
this is so true and more people need to read this.
People think artistic sports aren't as difficult as they are so they think "they must be starving themselves if they're that lean," but really, they're burning far more calories than perceived

LawriLuvsLemonade Lol😂😂.
Chloe Sandrelli So, what is the approach now? Do they look more muscular? I’m just asking out of interest, not to criticize you 😊
gluecks. piratin no worries!
Always nice to see a Hugo profile pic

the crucial difference between her counting calories and disordered calorie counting is that she doesnt view calories as harmful. they are neutral. it's just fact. the negative relationship with food comes in when you're afraid of or feel guilty about calories
Omg yes this is the perfect way to describe it! It’s just neutral math and facts. It’s the same as budgeting money. If you want to save money you have to know how much money you have, and the prices of everything you’re buying
This girl helped me start my weight loss journey. Never let anyone tell you calories don’t matter.
You better look up dr Berg. His advice and knowledge really helped me out. I would start with looking into "insulin resistance."
Calories didn't matter when dinosaurs roamed because they didn't exist 😂
so how much have you lost?

I like the "I don't starve myself, I need to lose 1,5 pounds and I'll be there in 3 weeks and that's just fine" attitude... not that I expected her to starve herself, I just like her approach to this
what if she doesn't get there?
@@jones2277 she will if she’s committed. Or maybe it will take 4 weeks, or 5 weeks. But it doesn’t matter, she will still get there eventually!
Slow is best!
how do you know she isn't gonna gain it back after 3 weeks?

The more you try to control food, the more food controls you
That she awesome! 😊
I've considered counting but sadly my parents and doctors dont allow it/ recommend it because of my history with eating disorders, but i think ill do it anyways cuz ive gained 70 pounds in the past year :(
@@devynrwilson dont risk it. chances are you'll end up with an ed.
how do i count correctly? i can never get the numbers correct
Typically the rule is subtract 200 from your calorie "base" (something calculated based on your age/height, etc) if you want to lose weight and add 200 to your base if you want to gain muscle :)
her hair does look a little thin, she may be a little lacking
Maj if you have something racist to say, keep it at home
a w people forget that muscles weigh some much more than fat, even as a plus size dancer I count calories and do more gentle exercise because bulky muscles can make it especially difficult to move and jump.
She’s so down to earth

I must admit, I saw "ballerina" and "counting calories" and I had a very different idea of what I was going to watch than what I actually saw. Pleasantly surprised by how healthy and balanced this was.
How lovely and articulate she is. Surprised by how much processed food she eats though, I was expecting her to be ultra-healthy, nice to know she eats ready meals like many people do! Loving her journal of what she eats/exercises - such a good idea!
It's actually way easier to count calories with processed food because it's all on the label

Tieia Middleton I'm just curious if you lost weight by hugely reducing your calories or were you eating quite a bit?
if you want to figure out how many calories you should be eating, download the app "myfitnesspal" and put in all your info for it to generate a number for you!..
Tieia Middleton how much calories do you eat in a day
xmalfan *and* xxx boi I've found the best way to track your personal calorie needs is to calculate your BMR (basic metabolic rate) you can find calculators on the internet!
Did you work out a lot?

I think with quick she meant her walking pace, that she is walking fast, but not running
She was doing a quick hike that day,. She said on Saturdays she does a 10 mile hike... I watched the video.
A hard pill to swallow:
She can eat what she wants because she does so much exercise throughout the day as a ballerina that she burns a lot of what she eats.
Honestly, even if u ate 1800 calories a day and only did 45 minutes of exercise you can get really lean as well. You don’t need to be as lean as her, since it’s literally her job to stay in shape, I think most people will be quite happy to be even 10lbs heavier than where she is.
Brah moment for Americans
Florence Xu 4 weeks late but i’m going to share my stuff as an athlete. The ballerina counting her calories is actually very helpful for her sport. This is because she is making sure that she doesn’t over or under eating so that she doesn’t loose her muscle or gain fats. Having as little fat and thin but very strong muscles makes you very strong and very fast. This way, she can be more efficient in her sport. To add this, this method is what I’ve been doing as a long distance runner.
I eat whatever I want and I dont exercise a lot!

so why not throw some rice in a cooker, some beans and veggies in the steamer basket and call it a night? no harm to her body or planet or animals...

It’s been four years since I first watched this video and I still come back and watch it. I love it - so fascinating.
Yes one serving of pasta is VERY tiny for example with penne it’s like less than 20 penne pastas
Causally sits in a full split looking like a ballerina boss while eating a granola bar-GOALS!!

@@Mournful_night It's really not fair, they should get paid a lot more for what they do. Do you know if it varies by company or position? I remember watching the channel of the ballerina Alison Stroming and she lived in a super nice NYC apartment.

SHE ATE A CORN DOG FOR BREAKFAST LMFAO
Yeah and those corndogs have protein and carbs both of which she needs a lot of so it's fine idiots.
Fucking annoying vegans. Talk about eating disorders , gawd.

Nothing is more fascinating to me than days in the lives of ballet dancers. Thanks.
She has a very healthy relationship with food.
she actually does, usually with counting calories it can create disordered eating patterns but she has a very good relationship with eating
not really. she just goes to Trader Joe's and buys all the packaged meals. a healthy relationship with food is knowing where your food came from and it's effect on the body as well as the planet. she is only looking at calories... not once did she mention micronutrients.
/eyeroll
Vee X honey, health is not a perception wtf
Its really nice to see that she's not going hard on herself and that she eats regularly. She's healthy and it makes me smile about that she doesn't push herself.

Just eat a corn dog rather than a vegan blueberry cake.

Actually she probably does use MFP. They probably discussed it and decided to show her using pen and paper because otherwise this whole thing would then turn into a giant ad for the app.
You're like..the only person with that common sense here.
