Pile, & a few other steps shown, are foundation moves which dancers continue to work on mastering - we work slowly on the shape of the whole leg (& upper body) in all "basic" positions, then practice them in a combination, and then slow down again to "craft" the positions, and repeat.
As an adult beginner who was fortunate to have an excellent (and patient!) teacher, going on pointe is not out of reach, BUT! Maria is so right to emphasise the basics, which most adult beginners and self-taught dancers do not have. If the self-taught dancer is following the comments, please listen to Maria and focus on placing and improving your foot and ankle strength before attempting pointe, or you risk injuring yourself and being unable to continue in your ballet studies.

I learned Ballet when in college in the late 1960s. At 81, I still do stretching, balance, and movement. Ballet is excellent in quality of life living.
She's so polite...I'm gon keep it real...people these days want all the credit for one minute of the WORK. And they're so DILLUSIONAL about what it takes to TRULY MASTER SOMETHING! You see the time she's invested in her talent has given her confidence AND humility to match. GOD BLESS HER!!
Having had the pleasure of seeing Swan Lake performed @ The Mariinsky & @ The Bolshoi while my Dad was attached to the US Embassy in Moscow. I loved ballet, and the FSB constantly gave my Dad tickets because they knew of my love for the art. I remember clearly talking with the "minders" about the differences between the dancers, staging, costumes. It was in 1981-82. I felt so lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy ballet in Russia. I still love live performances. I honestly feel like Russian trained dancers are just stunning to see perform live. I was able to see multiple casts for the same ballets. My minders helped broaden my appreciation of the Artistry of individual dancers. I was 7 when we moved to Moscow.

It was a sort of game between host contrives and diplomatic families. Their goal was to show me the best of Russia, in hopes that my dad would slip up and spill secrets. We were taught specific things before we were sent to any of my father's postings. Like eating whatever was put in front of you, using the correct utensil during meals, and that we were representatives of the United States any time we travelled on a diplomatic passport. I have a gift for languages, so I always talked to the minders. My Dad thought it was hysterical that I garnered more intelligence than most because I asked good questions, with innocence and curiosity. I was not trying to get intelligence... I just wanted to absorb knowledge.
I had an amazing childhood because of my father's career. My sister did not enjoy the adventure, as I did. She hated Moscow, her memories are of bugged apartments, bitter cold, and sad people.

Sorry to hear about your sisters experience though. Moscow probably was cold because it has continental climate and also, those days even Finland was much colder than it is nowadays. This experience of mine did not happen for real but I once had a quite interesting dream about Moscow in the late thirties (Stalins Purges era). Would you want to hear it?
I love the "slippery spot" thing... I did ballet only few years to develop more balanced muscles and better posture for figure skating, and i did not experienced that, but... as an Ice skater, this video resonates a lot, with the little habits and "manias" we did have. For us could be a "slippery spot" or a hole on the ice. It's just something we all have had to deal with...weather it was real...or not all.
I agree with you! The swans are definitely one of the most fascinating scenes in ballet, the way we have to be in sync is hard work and is tiresome it all comes together in the end and looks absolutely stunning!!
Keep doing these videos. I’m 57 and as soon as I’m done with physical therapy from my knee replacement I’m fixin to start ballet. And I’m dragging my mom and her friends with me. I don’t have friends (on purpose) so in order to get an adult class started here I had to troll my moms social circle. This was in reference to the popularity of ballet. i love watching ballet content because its nice seeing how dedicated people are to one thing. im in the veterinary field and it takes years of training and hours of studying, physical work, injuries and learning from the experience. It really gets tedious, long, dirty and tiring. When i watch ballet its like im admirative of people going through all the discipline and hardship to create something so beatiful. In medicine you dont create much though you help animals and especially people, but ballet has visual results of how good you can become after years of training....
I saw the Bolshi ballet perform many years ago. It was so beautiful i cried through many parts of it. The training and the movement was second to none. It was beautiful

14:13 I dance hip hop and lifting one pant leg up is really common when rehearsing too. Since we usually wear baggy clothes to give more movement in the choreo, it's hard to see your form and footwork when you're learning a new piece. Lifting up one pant leg lets you compare both how the choreo will "look" in a performance and how your form is looking now. We'll also put a dangling cloth like a bandana in a back pocket for the same reason. The fluttering fabric brings attention to the movement and that area.

@Maria Khoreva I'm glad you spoke on the science behind going to work/be active while not feeling well. It's definitely something that takes time to figure, should I go or should I stay home. Sometimes I went to work when I should've stayed home, while a few times I stayed home and felt later I could've went to work, so maddening. I did learn from experience, sometimes feeling mentally and/or physically unhealthy, it benefited me to go to work because the co-workers & work were a distraction from my ailments thereby allowing me to feel better at some point. What I say is, go out when in doubt, you can always come back home. Sore throats, stay at home, you can make it worse. It's always the throat that takes me out. 😒😒😒😒
In every sport, you build strength and technique by going slow. It’s literally programming an entire nervous system to know how to do something. We do it in cycling, we do it in fencing. Not surprised it’s done in ballet.
I have a special interest in independent learning and homeschooling education, I think it is WONDERFUL that people find interest in dance and independenly experiment with it, nothing wrong with taking inspiration from educational methods- as ballet is an educational method for dance. However- there is nothing like learning with a teacher- if you’re not big into social groups- private lessons- they really are wonderful- because you can be fully present in your student position- and let free on the teacher position, that way you can be free to truly engage fully in the lessons you’re taking. Point is, one likes ballet, instead of doing nothing they do something to experiment- that is to be encouraged I believe, learning from a teacher is a deeply integral learning opportunity- just consideration. I do not do ballet, I am doing gyro-tonic for pain, but since Ive been appreciating ballet a lot and kinda wanting to get into it!

After a jump or big leap sometimes we hear the noise of the point shoes on the ground when landing. 1. Is it something that a dancer should avoid? 2. Unfortunately even if you can do the hypermobile stretch, it will never be good for the body. Long term damage and pain will happen with the joints over time.
