I can't believe someone threw that out without first trying everything that you did. They'll get a new one and won't maintain it either, so watch him you'll be getting another one very soon. Proper maintenance is the key to prolonging the life of outdoor power equipment.
I can sympathize. It can be a mess pulling apart a mower, especially if gas leaks out, take a whole day, and if you don't have a blow torch or compressed air you may not adequately clean the carburetor or spark plug after all that work & back to square one. Another part of the equation is how much your time is worth to you. If you know what you're doibg & have the proper tools, mower repair can be done in less than an hour. But if you're a novice, and your defective mower is an old war horse, you can find a new mower for $150.
If it's really 20 years old I'd say the owner got their money out of it. Some people value their time more than money, others may not be physically capable of getting down to do the maintenance. Either way this person got a good deal of being able to save the lawn mower and give it new life possibly selling or donating it and hopefully the old owner got a nice upgrade.
Similar situation. I was helping a neighbors friend who's an old lady move. She had a lawnmower that didn't work and was told it needs a carburetor. I took it home for free because she was going to throw it away. I'm definitely about to try and get it working and sell it. It's got spark and air. I did get a free mower similar to this one last fall, the only difference was that it was front wheel drive. Apparently the thing was ran on low oil it’s entire life because on the first test run it smoked so bad that it probably killed all the mosquitoes around my house. Both the piston rings and the cylinder walls were completely scored and because of that I completely gutted the machine for parts. Now I could’ve just found another engine for it but the mower itself was just too worn down to be worth it.

It didn't run when it was given to me, so I'm at a loss for what gets connected. Can you help?
Great step by step video explanation on how to tune up and maintain your lawnmower! This happened to be my exact mower! Great job! Thank you very much!
I just obtained the exact lawn mower for free today. The owner told me it doesn't start. Being my first gas lawn mower and knowing nothing about small engines, I am glad I found your channel. This lawn mower is gonna be a my multi-weekend project :D
Great video! I wish it was a little slower in some parts, but it's exactly what I needed to see how the carburetor actually comes off. Saved this video for sure for future use!
That clogged filter is a forever choke. The thing is usually they dont change that or the oil and in some cases, people run them without a filter. You might get away with that in wet grass but it's like suicide for an engine. And oil changes are Required if oil is gray /silver/dark amber/brown/ black. Silver isn't a good sign. It's not like a special edition oil.😂
When the oil was “dripping” out you should have done like the old Heinz catsup commercial & played the song ‘ Anticipation’ by Carly Simon. Other than that I loved your video.
I tipped over my mower like a fool and now it wont start. There was oil in the airfilter and I am guessing maybe on the sparkplug and carb? Didnt check yet but took out the filter and cleaned it. Next step remove and clean sparkplug? Or will it 100% be the carb?
@@KevinArcade87 Sounds like you tipped it the wrong way and tipped it with the air filter down. Best to tip it with the air filter side up! I would definitely get a new air filter and you will more than likely have to clean the carburetor. The spark plug may be okay.
@@GarageGear I cleaned out the filter as instructed by the manufacturer next task is cleaning out the carb. It does sound like there is a liquid rattle when I try to start the engine
@@GarageGear Didnt clean the carb. Just added new oil and tried to start with the air filter removed and after a few pulls it started with a huge amount of smoke! Stinked too but now it's running fine
This might be a dumb question, but where do you dispose of all the dirty carb cleaner left over? Do you put it in a container and take it to same place as you would for motor oil recycling?
I have a huskee 42" riding mower with a powermore 420 engine..runs fin but after a lil while it burns blue smoke when cutting the yard...the cylinder wall is not scored, baby smooth..piston is clean...maybe a cracked ring or head gasket leaking or cracked?
You forgot to do the most important thing: clean the small main jet hole located in the brass bowl plug, using your small wires. Yours must have been clean enough already since it ran OK when you were done, but others might not be as lucky. That small main jet hole plugging is the most likely cause of most mowers not running, or running well.
Great video JB these always come in handy. Would love to see if you could make one that fixes the self propelled mowers. I have issues with two separate ones; push them lever down and the wheels lock and the other wheels are locked all the time except for when lever is down. Always fun to watch thanks again!!
Hey Nick! Thanks for the positive feedback! You may want to try these three things for your mowers. Take the belt cover off and check to see if there is any debris around the belt jamming it up. Next try taking the wheels off and inspect the gears to make sure everything thing is moving and no teeth are broken. Spin the drive axle with the wheel off and see if there is any resistance. If so, the transmission mission will need to be inspected. Hope this can kinda get you started. 👍thanks for watching bud!
65 YOA mechanically inclined female here. I believe I can do this, BUT I don't have any compressed air. Suggestions? Canned air??? Or would it be just as easy to buy a carb on Am**** for $20?? Thank you.
Hey DK! Awesome! The knockoff carburetors are generally good for these mowers. Worst case scenario you could get a can of air or set the carb out in the hot Sun to dry out. 👍
Exactly the video I needed and fun to watch! I'll be trying this for the first time today. Quick question, what's the best way to dispose of the overspray and gunk residue from the cleaning?
@@GarageGear Thanks for the response, the carb cleanup worked great! The mower is running like clockwork. I'm careful about maintenance but have always been intimidated by carburetors, so it was fun to learn something new, and save a $90 service bill! (I utilized my backyard fire pit to eliminate the residue... that was fun too) 😁
A lot of these folks are going for the batt junk so next time there's immediately going to be an obstacle dealing with batteries. They go bad. Manufacturer discontinues them. Sometimes a safety revision requires them to make the updated battery not interchangeable. Last time i checked, gasoline don't need a bios update or special plug to burn.
It’s technically not a free mower. You need to have the tools to fix it. The gunk remover spray can, air filters, Vice, blow torch, wrenches, garage to store it all, drill, airblower…, So if you’re somebody that lives in an apartment Or you have a small house and you don’t have tools 🛠️ , 🧰 , The cost of buying all those tools to fix a mower would be the same price as buying a new mower. I still respect what you do And I think it is awesome to have that knowledge & the tools to do it. But for the average person, it’s not technically a free mower lol. Thank you for the video and the knowledge Peace be with you Trump 2024 🇺🇸✝️🕊️😎
@@GarageGear my dream one day is to learn what you do and have a house where I can have a workstation like you do. After my girlfriend and I broke up We each moved into an apartment. I chose to live two blocks away from my mom’s house so I can always be 90 seconds from her if she needs anything. (I have no brothers and sisters and my mom is one of my best friends, we have always been very close) The property management company where I live hired me five years ago (that’s how long I’ve lived here lol) to take care of the pool here on the property and all the landscaping. I absolutely love it.!!! I live at Flowerfield cottages in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. my mom and I were not wealthy when I was young, but she always said manners and cleanliness Do not cost a lot of money. I have always kept every place I’veever lived at manicured. The reason I found your video is the mulching mower that I’ve been using the last five years every time I started it stops running within three seconds. I did some research online and they said a problem could be the carburetor or the filter. I changed the oil and the filter a lot. But that’s as far as my knowledge went as far as the work I did on the motor went. Cleaning and changing the carburetor is a little above my pay grade. lol. But I love to learn. And I’m a quick learner. I am positive if I had the tools I could clean the carburetor like you did. But for me to go out and buy all that stuff to clean the carburetor, it would probably be less expensive to buy a new mower for $249. Mulching mowers are the best.!!!! I use them right now in the fall not just to cut the grass but to mulch the leaves. It makes cleaning up leaves so easy when you have a mulching mower. Thank you for your video and thank you for your time. Peace be with you and your family. 🇺🇸✝️🕊️🌾☀️🍂. Sincerely Yours, Neil Allen 🇺🇸

So, about that red gasket in the small fuel line hole. I accidentally shot it out with my air hose. Gave it a little too much pressure. Is there anything I can do about this situation? In the scenario of finding it in the grass, or not finding it? TIA
Hey James you could order a carburetor kit for your model and replace it. Kits are usually pretty cheap. Or you could visit a local shop. They should have one. 👍

I have this same mower . Mine will run for about a a half hour and then die. I cleaned the carburetor out as best I could still nothing. Any idea what could cause this?
@@GarageGear so took it off the mower brake cleaner on it wiped it all down sprayed it off with an air hose cleaned everything thinking maybe it just was greasy oily and dirty it ran for a lot longer then before. I got about an hour of continuous use out of it before it shut down again. Not ran a lot longer than it was I was wondering maybe if the whole motor was overheated and that's what caused it to stop seeing how after cleaning it I got a lot more use out of it.
@@Dave-thorfinn ok Dave if it still shuts down after some use I would recommend replacing the magneto. That’s should solve your problem. The motor itself should be able to run non stop. If it continues beyond that I would take it into a shop to be looked at!
If it's really dirty, can you give it an initial wash with water, or will that damage it? Also, where in the carb is the most likely location of a clog, the little hole in the screw on the bottom of the bowl?
I appreciate the video. Good info on how to clean a small engine carb. I'm guessing that most people needing this type of instruction are grown adults, not kids. Not sure why all of the Nickelodeon type pop-up images and kiddie talk., imo they distract from the information.
Hey wilbert! Appreciate the positive feedback! Once you clean one of these you pretty much have cleaned them all. Many carbs are pretty similar’ I run ethanol free on all my machines. Saves a lot of drama! Thanks for watching!
That mower was clearly neglected with zero maintenance from the previous owner. Another example of the "throw away" society. Would rather spend several hundred dollars to replace it instead of learning how to spend $15 and an hour of their time to keep it running tip top. The oil was so bad I would run it through a few heat cycles and change it again to try and flush out the sludge.
Hey SmallBlock! Not a hard fix at all. Crazy that people are willing to spend more money. Truth be told I ran it for a few and check the oil again. It was so sludgy at the bottom that it needed another oil change. Letting it run with fresh oil for a few minutes definitely cleaned it up. More to come next week on this! 👍
Good job buddy ! Just about oil... SAE30 always recommended for this kind of motor running in hot summer temperatures, would you say there's no difference between it and 5 or 10w30? (graphics clearly shows SAE supporting higher degrees..) What dyou think 🤔
I’ve spoken with a small engine mechanic over the years about this, who’s been at this for over 40 years and he strongly recommended 5w30 full synthetic for most small engines. This could vary depending on what’s required in the manuals but for most 5w30 full synthetic flows best! Thanks for watching Martin!
No need for an impact driver. A simple ratchet will work but will take a bit longer. You won’t need an air hose if you just let the carb sit out in the hot sun for an afternoon that should dry it up. The air jet does help blow out any remaining gunk too though! Thanks for watching
My parent's mower starts, then stops after a few seconds. I cleaned out the carburetor, float looked good and cleaned the nut. Checked the air filter, still clean. Spark plug looked clean, too. Don't think the fuel line was blocked (was leaking when I took the bowl off). What else could be the problem?
Id drink beer with you anyday....that carb tutorial was spot on, and even though Im the guy that fixes everyones mowers.....it still kept my attention. ( I have my Dads 2008 still cranking on first pull)
@@mranderson5668 hey Mr Anderson! If your carb is leaking it’s usually a bad bowl gasket or a stuck needle and float. Carb clean can usually help determine/fix those issues (or buying a new bowl gasket- only a few bucks)

This might be a dumb question, but where do you dispose of all the dirty carb cleaner left over? Do you put it in a container and take it to same place as you would for motor oil recycling?
I have a recycling container at my work that I take it to.
I have a huskee 42" riding mower with a powermore 420 engine..runs fin but after a lil while it burns blue smoke when cutting the yard...the cylinder wall is not scored, baby smooth..piston is clean...maybe a cracked ring or head gasket leaking or cracked?
Sounds like that could be the case. Let me know what you find.
I just got my old lawn mower working with some 6 dollar carb cleaner and watching this video and won't have to buy a new one. Thanks
ROCK ON GREEN! way to save that money!

I’ll give it a try thanks for the help!

Amazing what people throw away in the state of New York here in Canada we gotta buy them, very rare to find mowers for free pickup.

Exactly the video I needed and fun to watch! I'll be trying this for the first time today. Quick question, what's the best way to dispose of the overspray and gunk residue from the cleaning?
You could just absorb it with newspaper or paper towels and throw it away. I have a chemical disposal at my work that I take it to. 👍
@@GarageGear Thanks for the response, the carb cleanup worked great! The mower is running like clockwork. I'm careful about maintenance but have always been intimidated by carburetors, so it was fun to learn something new, and save a $90 service bill! (I utilized my backyard fire pit to eliminate the residue... that was fun too) 😁
@@ScottK-t4m awesome my friend great work!
I don’t have an air compressor, Will it be okay if I don’t blow out all of the parts after using the carb cleaner on them ?
Yep just place them in the sun to dry for an hour or so.

Turn it upside down to get the oil out of those. Small engines need small engine oil bc of the heat produced.

Think of how man millions of lawn mowers are needlessly thrown away that just needed this basic maintenance. Gonna do this on my snow blower
@@nunurbuisness5578 RIGHT?!?!? Saving them from the dump!
Would brake cleaner work? All I have in the shop at the moment 😂
Hey paw! That may work. Give it a shot and let me know how it works! 👍

@@Washington-y8n appreciate you sharing this Neil! I picked a lot of my tools up second hand at garage sales and flea markets. It’s a great way to save money on all of this! 👍
@GarageGear That's what I figured. So without it, the carb wouldn't function properly?

Awesome delphinium! Glad she’s running again for you! 👍
I have this same mower . Mine will run for about a a half hour and then die. I cleaned the carburetor out as best I could still nothing. Any idea what could cause this?
I would check the magneto that might need to be replaced. They can overheat and do that. You’ll have to let me know how it works out for you.
Sounds good. Thank you
If it's really dirty, can you give it an initial wash with water, or will that damage it? Also, where in the carb is the most likely location of a clog, the little hole in the screw on the bottom of the bowl?
Hey echt! I would stick with carb cleaner. Perhaps you could use water but then stick it out in the sun to dry for a few hours . Thanks for watching

I appreciate the video. Good info on how to clean a small engine carb. I'm guessing that most people needing this type of instruction are grown adults, not kids. Not sure why all of the Nickelodeon type pop-up images and kiddie talk., imo they distract from the information.
Got the make the videos entertaining somehow other wise no one would watch. Thanks for watching.
good video. us amateurs are often afraid of carburators, although we don't like to admit it. do you run ethanol free in your mowers?

(graphics clearly shows SAE supporting higher degrees..)
What dyou think 🤔
I’ve spoken with a small engine mechanic over the years about this, who’s been at this for over 40 years and he strongly recommended 5w30 full synthetic for most small engines. This could vary depending on what’s required in the manuals but for most 5w30 full synthetic flows best! Thanks for watching Martin!
Did SIMILAR but after a few hours I went to tru starting it and it started but turned off after a few seconds?
Hey Manchester just to be clear you did an entire carb clean?
Do I need to have an impact driver and air hose to do this?
No need for an impact driver. A simple ratchet will work but will take a bit longer. You won’t need an air hose if you just let the carb sit out in the hot sun for an afternoon that should dry it up. The air jet does help blow out any remaining gunk too though! Thanks for watching

What else could be the problem?
Is the gas old? Sounds like there is still a fuel related issue going on.
@GarageGear Ah yes that could be it. The gasoline they use has probably been sitting in the tank for months.
