I am working closely with my Nurse Practitioner but also doing my due diligence while taking Niacin. I am Iron/B3/B12 deficient. I had gastric bypass surgery back in 2007 which has led to a malabsorption issue. I take Flush Free Niacin Inositol Hexanicotinate 500mg every other day instead of daily. When I have my blood work done, my Nurse Practitioner will tell me whether what I am taking is adequate enough or not. My iron is already a lot better now. I only take 32.5mg instead of 65mg. Anything over 45mg is considered unsafe. So as you can see, I am working with my medical crew to not only get things at a safe level but a working level.

I was on 1500 mg for a long while and then recently noted a significant increase in my fasting BG. I stopped taking it for several months to see if it could be the cause. There was no change in my high BG but my LDL in creased over 40 points and my HDL dropped 15 points. I'm now suspending use of Repatha and low dose crestor to see if the rise in BG could be from them. Btw, I eat very low carb, unprocessed food and exercise daily. Bodyweight is normal.

I watched a video where the guy said to eat some carbs with your Niacin and then fast for 6 hours to keep from developing diabetes from Niacin. I have heard that niacin can cause diabetes. I'm taking 1000 mg each night of the slow release Niacin and get a bit of a flush from it. I don't mind the flush and hoping Niacin brings my LDL down. It went super high on Ketovore, but all my other markers significantly improved, so statins had to go and hoping Niacin will drop the number of small density LDL.

Cpeptide last month was 1.4 which I understand to be indicative of good metabolic control. @@catchristo9406According to everything I know about niacin so far, one should not use the slow release or no-flush forms but should rather use the instant-release flushing type (because the other forms can be toxic and even lethal to the body in as little as 3 weeks). I read a book called "Niacin: The Real Story" and in it the doctor explains how for different people, that might need different dosages, it does not take effect until the person reaches the dosage that his/her body might need. So some people might need lower dosages while others might have a very high deficit in niacin, and those people won't have a flush reaction unless they reach the right dosage. That is how you know how much your body needs . If there's no flush, I would increase the dosage bit by bit until I get the flush. I started with 100mg 3 times per day and today I took 500mg as my first dose and got a really huge flush that lasted a couple of hours if not even longer. I still feel a bit the sensation and it has been 3 hours now, but the redness is almost gone

I've been arguing with my doctor for years about my high ldl. Unfortunately statins cause me a great deal of pain and difficulty using my joints all over my body on a very low dose. My doctor suggested a niacin supplement and gave me a prescription of one. I took one pill and the flush was extreme. My arms felt like they were severely sunburned along with my head and legs that were jumping around. It lasted for around 90 minutes and then went away. I was feeling relieved but an hour later it started again and I was close to going to the emergency room with if finally went away. Recently I decided to try the niacin again by buying some 500 mg tablets that you can split. I started at 250mg a day for several days and only felt a small amount of heat at first. Then I increased the dose by another 250mg for most of a week. Working my way up I'm now taking 750 in the morning and 500 in the evening and have only the slightest sensation of flush. What I haven't found is info on what is the safest dose that is able to lower ldl. I've seen suggestions of from 500mg up to 6000mg.

The key to avoid flushes is to take smaller dosages more times throughout the day, and it is also important to take it right after meals as much as possible to avoid the flush. Also, take it along with vitamin C too. I discovered accidentally that taking lemon juice when I start getting the flush will reduce its intensity and duration. Maybe also why the doctor said to take it with vitamin C in the book called "Niacin: The Real Story" by Abram Hoffer.

Now a few weeks later I still get a flush usually, but sometimes I don't have a noticeable flush. Does that mean my veins are not dilating and allowing the extra oxygen to pass through? Or is that maybe because my body is acclimating to the niacin and just no longer causing the heated flush and itching. My reason for taking niacin is to get the extra oxygenation in my capillaries. Not so much interested in my high cholesterol levels at the present. Thanks for any viewpoint on this.

Blood thinners are dangerous. We've used high quality Protease (a digestive enzyme pronounced pro-t-aize). Taken between meals it will systemically metabolize blood clots at junctions & varicose veins. If you take it with meals, it metabolizes (breaks-down) proteins to be better assimilated & absorbed. After 40-50yo our bodies start producing < enzymes. Enzymes are amazing for health. For example, Bromelain is treatment for urinary tract infections.
