Probably so. It is said many of Elros’ descendants, including Aragorn, resembled Elros. How emotional it must’ve been for Elrond to occasionally see his brother’s face within the generations of his descendants through the centuries.
The ring of Barahir is particularly interesting to me, not just because it's one of the oldest (inanimate) objects in Middle Earth at the time of the war of the ring, but also because it has been worn on so many and important hands. It was in the possession of Finrod, Beren, Elros, Elendil, Isildur, all kings of Arnor and finally of Aragorn and Arwen. It's far older than all rings of power and although it has no great power of its own, it's still mindblowingly old and important. And the story of how it survived the shipwreck of Arvedui is also pretty interesting, perhaps one day you could make a video about this and similar artifacts? I think the only objects in Middle Earth in TA 3019 that are even older are the Palantíri, which were probably made by Feanor himself. It's fascinating to think that the stone that Pippin picks up from the ground of Isengard was made in the light of the two trees by the greatest of all children of Illúvatar. (But then again they interact with Gandalf all the time and he was present during the music of the Ainur before the creation of the world...)
Awesome observation. It would have been neat, too, if Thingol's sword would have survived the downfall of Numenor. I know Rings of Power shows Turin's dragon-helm in the high tower of Numenor as a backround glimpse (sooo cool). But I don't know if the books state if this item was saved?

The most notable of these were the seven Palantíri, the stone of Erech, the last seedling of the white tree, the ring of Barahir and the sceptre of the princes of Andunië, later known as the sceptre of Annúminas (it was kept by Elrond and is handed to Aragorn at his coronation to serve as the royal symbol of Arnor). This sceptre was the oldest known man-made object in Middle Earth in 3019, but not older than the ring and the stones (made by elves). The other important heirlooms of Númenor were lost with the island or with the army of Ar-Pharazôn, so as far as I know this includes the axe of Tuor, the sword of Thingol and other things. However, Glamdring (the sword of Turgon) survived until the third age, but I think it wasn't brought to Númenor.
@@untruelie2640 I always wondered how the sword of Turgon came to be in possession of those trolls. Trolls aren't exceptionally long lived like Ents and not likely to survive multiple wars. Especially the War of Wrath lol! So how they came into possession of that sword is quite a quagmire... 🤔
I was gonna ask for an updated video on Elros, then I found this one. Definitely an interesting story with his and Elrond's decision. That and seeing how Elrond cared for his brothers lineage through the ages.
Elros and his father Earendil are Tolkein's characters I most wish we knew more about, since the story around the kingdom of Numenor is my favorite. Elros shows the potential of Man to rise to such incredible heights, and Numenor 3000 years later of how low it's fall can be.
Its really beautiful that Tolkien included the gift to give up life at will for the Numenoreans too. We can only wish for such a gift in our reality and perhaps Tolkien wished so too. When we're young, immortality seems so appealing, but the older we get, the more we realize that death is truly a gift and not a curse.

In earlier versions, the Adunaic name for Elros was Indilzar Azrabelo, and later changed to Gimilzor. Later, the name Gimilzor was given to the twenty-third king of Numenor.
Do some part videos on the leaders of the 12 houses of Gondothlim! You have done Turgon, Tuor, and Glorindel, so you don't need to worry about them if you prefer. They can be in two parts, but be sure Maeglin in the focus of one and then Ecthelion for the other one. You should probably include Salgant in the one with Maeglin, but the rest you can decide for yourself then!

There is an incomplete one, but i think it give the number of generations, at least. Aragorn is descended from Silmarien, who was the eldest child of a Numenorian king. But in those days the throne passed down the male line to her younger brother.
To me Elros deffinitely participated in the War of wrath (dunno about Elrond but Elros is must), he was 56 till the war end, that the only way i can see how he worthy enough to be chosen to become the first king of the Edain
I think there is a possibility that Elros must've formed a deeper friendship and camaraderie with the Edain during the War of Wrath hence why he choose to become a mortal man and the first King of Numenor.

Kinda funny how many if not most lotr artists use beards to separate between men and elves while the men or Numenorean decent, or at least the line of Elendil are all clean shaven if I remember correctly. Beards are more associated with Middlemen, well and Dwarfs of course
I can’t help but wonder WHY Elros chose to become mortal. We are never told why. What could have motivated him to separate from his parents and brother forever? My best guess is that he fell in love with a mortal woman who became his wife and the mother of his children (who is sadly never named), and for her, he made the same choice that Lúthien made for Beren.
To be fair, Elros and Elrond had LOADS of childhood trauma that was *specifically* caused by elves, and choosing to live as an immortal meant he’d be stuck with their self-destructive acts and petty rivalries forever, even after a possible physical death from accident or violence, since he’d inevitably be brought back to a physical form. That’s not to say men weren’t equally problematic, but Elros grew up away from them and may have viewed choosing mortality as a fresh start, and a way to live and die on his own terms instead of being defined by either his bio-family or semi-adopted family.
If Elrond and Elros were raised by a son of Feanor, why didn't the Oath of Feanor fall to them ... or was it that the Silmarils were so far out of reach by this time that the Oath was ended? I may have just answered my own question, but thanks for your answer.
Indeed she does. Her choice is to be counted among the kindred of men, so her fate will be that of men (whatever it may be - only Iluvatar knows). This makes her decision all the more heart-breaking for Elrond, because his fate is different being an elf. It's part of why I love Elrond so much - he knows the "best case scenario" is him losing his daughter forever, yet he still sets Aragorn on the path he does.
Can you explain in some video or maybe just like a few minutes how can some elves just say I want to be mortal now it is something that always interested me. Could they be like " Oh I dont want to be mortal anymore I want my immortalita now again" ?
Your average elf can't choose to be mortal - with the exception of Luthien, who managed to persuade the powers that be to let her share her human lover Beren's fate. Otherwise the choice was only offered to the children of a marriage between an elf and a human (or between one of their children and another elf), and there weren't that many of them. Love the poignancy surrounding Tolkien's idea of "The Gift of Men". Tolkien was deeply Christian and although he strongly disavowed any use of allegory in his writings, his creation is heavily steeped in the Christian ethic.
Yeah, so none of the house of Elros had beards. If you read HOME, the Numenorans did not age like normal people, they remained in full vigor until they felt the call of death. So Elros appearing like he does in that drawing is apocryphal, he would have looked the same as Elrond, up to the point that he died.
It wouldn’t surprise me to learn he has…complicated opinions about his parents. One wasn’t there when things went down (and apparently was away from them a lot) and then somehow became a star but never came back, and the other legit turned into a bird and left her children to the mercy of the Feanorians. Granted, Elwing definitely wouldn’t have won a fight against them, and said Feanorians did actually show some mercy in this one instance, but I’m pretty sure Elrond wouldn’t love that she literally flew off with a shiny rock and left them to fate. That’s not to say Eärendil and Elwing were bad people, but they made some massive mistakes as parents.
Does Tolkien explain why the Edain accepted Elros as king? He doesn't appear to have done anything particularly noteworthy for or on behalf of Men during or after the war until he becomes king. Surely there were Men who were equally deserving of the kingship. Did the Valar just decide that since he was half-elven he should be king, and force it on Men?
I don't think Tolkien specifically says why. However, there were not a whole lot of the Edain left after the wars against Morgoth. Elros almost certainly fought in the War of Wrath and his lineage included royalty and nobility from both the Noldor and Sindar and the Houses of Beor and Hador. There's a really good chance that, once he made the choice to be counted among Men, he was the highest ranking one alive.
I always feel like the whole Elwing being a bird and then Earendil flying in a skyship with a Silmaril headlight, but being a star that doesn't move as some kind of Tolkien fever dream. It's just weird.
Honest question: When Elros chose humanity, rather than waiting 1,000 of years to grow a beard, now, no longer half elven, can he grow a beard roughly at the same maturity level as a normal human?
I wish we were told her name. But regardless, he must have loved her so much. Why else would he choose to be a mortal man? He probably did not want to outlive her, just as Lúthien and Arwen did not want to outlive Beren and Aragorn.
I love the detail of Elros following the star of Earendil to get to Numenor. His father guiding him to his new home. It's beautiful in a way.

One of, if not the best human kings in the history of Middle Earth. But then again, he wasn't just another human.
I wonder how Earendil and Elwing must've felt when one of their sons choose the life of Men who were doomed to die.
Remember that Ëarendil wanted to choose as his son Elros later does, but went with Elven life because Elwing chose so.

My best guess is that he fell in love with a mortal woman who became his wife and the mother of his children (who is sadly never named), and for her, he made the same choice that Lúthien made for Beren.
To be fair, Elros and Elrond had LOADS of childhood trauma that was *specifically* caused by elves, and choosing to live as an immortal meant he’d be stuck with their self-destructive acts and petty rivalries forever, even after a possible physical death from accident or violence, since he’d inevitably be brought back to a physical form. That’s not to say men weren’t equally problematic, but Elros grew up away from them and may have viewed choosing mortality as a fresh start, and a way to live and die on his own terms instead of being defined by either his bio-family or semi-adopted family.

If Elrond and Elros were raised by a son of Feanor, why didn't the Oath of Feanor fall to them ... or was it that the Silmarils were so far out of reach by this time that the Oath was ended? I may have just answered my own question, but thanks for your answer.
If l understand that correctly the Oath of Feanor only effects those who proclaimed it, so it only takes hold of Feanor and his sons

Does Arwen have the opportunity to reunite with Aragorn upon her passing?
Indeed she does. Her choice is to be counted among the kindred of men, so her fate will be that of men (whatever it may be - only Iluvatar knows). This makes her decision all the more heart-breaking for Elrond, because his fate is different being an elf. It's part of why I love Elrond so much - he knows the "best case scenario" is him losing his daughter forever, yet he still sets Aragorn on the path he does.

No they can't do that. Those who were offered the choice could only make the decision once and they were then bound by it for the rest of their lives.
Your average elf can't choose to be mortal - with the exception of Luthien, who managed to persuade the powers that be to let her share her human lover Beren's fate. Otherwise the choice was only offered to the children of a marriage between an elf and a human (or between one of their children and another elf), and there weren't that many of them. Love the poignancy surrounding Tolkien's idea of "The Gift of Men". Tolkien was deeply Christian and although he strongly disavowed any use of allegory in his writings, his creation is heavily steeped in the Christian ethic.

Elros did not have a beard. It is one of the signature traits of the decendent's of Earendil.

Manwë, with the blessing of Eru Iluvatar, gave the half-elven the right to decide which race they would be.

If you read HOME, the Numenorans did not age like normal people, they remained in full vigor until they felt the call of death. So Elros appearing like he does in that drawing is apocryphal, he would have looked the same as Elrond, up to the point that he died.

It wouldn’t surprise me to learn he has…complicated opinions about his parents. One wasn’t there when things went down (and apparently was away from them a lot) and then somehow became a star but never came back, and the other legit turned into a bird and left her children to the mercy of the Feanorians. Granted, Elwing definitely wouldn’t have won a fight against them, and said Feanorians did actually show some mercy in this one instance, but I’m pretty sure Elrond wouldn’t love that she literally flew off with a shiny rock and left them to fate. That’s not to say Eärendil and Elwing were bad people, but they made some massive mistakes as parents.

Does Tolkien explain why the Edain accepted Elros as king? He doesn't appear to have done anything particularly noteworthy for or on behalf of Men during or after the war until he becomes king. Surely there were Men who were equally deserving of the kingship. Did the Valar just decide that since he was half-elven he should be king, and force it on Men?
I don't think Tolkien specifically says why. However, there were not a whole lot of the Edain left after the wars against Morgoth. Elros almost certainly fought in the War of Wrath and his lineage included royalty and nobility from both the Noldor and Sindar and the Houses of Beor and Hador. There's a really good chance that, once he made the choice to be counted among Men, he was the highest ranking one alive.
I always feel like the whole Elwing being a bird and then Earendil flying in a skyship with a Silmaril headlight, but being a star that doesn't move as some kind of Tolkien fever dream. It's just weird.

Honest question: When Elros chose humanity, rather than waiting 1,000 of years to grow a beard, now, no longer half elven, can he grow a beard roughly at the same maturity level as a normal human?

I wish we were told her name. But regardless, he must have loved her so much. Why else would he choose to be a mortal man? He probably did not want to outlive her, just as Lúthien and Arwen did not want to outlive Beren and Aragorn.
