Nights is the climax of the Days Of Future Past album. It is a very good listen. Done with a full orchestra. There is a poem or coda that ties the whole thing together. That flute solo will haunt you for the rest of your days. In quiet times it will pop into your head and the song will roll on thru.

“Knights” without the poem at the end is about 75% less enjoyable, IMO. If you don’t know what that means, go listen to the album version and let it continue at the “end” of that song song. It quite literally makes it at least twice as good.

Now you owe it to yourself (not to us) to listen to the entire "Days of Future Passed" album. It is considered the album that CREATED the prog rock genre, no less! (True that some claim the same distinction for "In the Court of the Crimson King", which was recorded two years later. I'd say that the King Crimson album gave the genre its final form, and all prog rock you've listened to so far follows the canon they created in that album. So, "In the Court..." is an equally important and historic album, but the Moody Blues were still the pioneers.)
"Days..." caused a complete furor when it appeared. It SHOCKED the critics with its creativity, its concept, its musicianship, its sheer beauty, and with how groundbreaking it was. It only wasn't unanimously considered the record of the year (1967) because it was the same year when the Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's", and there was no competition possible with that thermonuclear blast.
And although "Nights in White Satin" is the best-known track in the album (and the only one many people know), the entire album is awesome, and a concept album (based on the times of the day, from morning to night, something we take for granted and don't think about) --- which means that there is a definite sequence of thematically connected tracks leading to each other, as in the best Pink Floyd albums (no, they didn't invent that, the Moody Blues did!). I have it on CD in the special Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab 24-kt gold-plated edition!

"Nights in White Satin", their magnum opus. All the elements you see and hear here are in the studio production as well - and then some. This leaves out the haunting spoken word poem at the end that comes right before the crescendo. Highly recommend you listen to the full length studio version. The sound quality is excellent. It would always blow me away in the car with the swirling orchestration and my right proper sound system. Ahead of its time production wise.

@@retroreactions.... Yeah it is, but unfortunately I gave you the wrong information. They were the house orchestra for Decca Records, so whenever they needed an orchestra, they were it. Not quite at the level of major symphonies, but a legitimate orchestra, though they did not play outside of the studio. As of 1980, they set up as an independent organization and play festivals and stuff in Europe, so perhaps you will find recordings of them. But here is the part that I did not know. The Moody Blues wrote the songs and submitted them, and the orchestra director composed the music to fit around them. Michael Pindar played the melletron, which was an early synthesizer, so some of the orchestral-sounding music came from that, but the rest was composed by the orchestra conductor whose name you can look up because I forgot. On the album, the music is credited to him/the name the band used for their collective identity. So me made some nice money off of the album.

So much good stuff...one of the best album intros they did is Procession/Story in your Eyes from the Every Good Boy Deserves Favour album, you must do them together for the full effect but try and find the album version, some YT versions have that annoying 'jump' as the sampling software tries to separate tracks that weren't intended to be parted, just ruins the flow. Justin Hayward had a hit in the late 70's with the track 'Forever Autumn' from the War of the Worlds album. Now, if you ever want to do a really good album....try that one, its a classic.

The album I remember most is “Every Good Boy Deserves Favour” that is a bit more dreamy and melodic than the second song presented here

Thanks, will add to list...still not sure what to make of Question...I do know these were 2 separate song ideas put together to make 1, but still a little surprised that it was a high performing single in 1970....

@@retroreactions.... This was something Freddie Mercury did a few years later by combining different songs in Bohemian Rhapsody with a ballad section and a hard rock section.

Brandon, did you catch SslvoG’s over/the-Moon reaction to Afternoon from this album today? If you didn’t watch it, then GOOD, because then you can do a reaction to it! 😁

I just had to jump in again....as I said, true talent never grows old...like wise, true appreciation of that talent should never go unheralded - bravo. Your reactions and analyses are far more meaningful than all but a few plying this activity - don't ever change. Based on value and style, you should have 20K subs by now. Best of luck going forward. FYI, you may come to notice that I will never recommend a piece of music without a link and some explanation of why I think it would appeal to you.
Sadly, This was the last live performance by flutist/vocalist Ray Thomas (RIP). Also departed since then is drummer Graeme Edge, who wrote the album closing piece missing from this performance (see my link below).

Thank you so much for those kind words William. Means a lot to hear things like that. I think I'm doing good for just 4 months in, but filming reactions definitely can present several challenges...I hope the more I do it the easier it'll get. It's all up to the algorithm really...it can keep you at the same growth pace for years if it wants, kill the channel if it wants, or blow you up like the lucky minority get. I will just keep doing my best and picking amazing music! Thanks for all the info and your support...

Hey Brandon, if you like orchestra and Rock, there is an album from 1969, that was the very first of it's kind, titled "Deep Purple - Concerto for Group and Orchestra" 😉
As you surely can imagine it's Deep Purple...with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
All music, also the orchestral parts, was composed by Jon Lord, Deep Purple's keyboard player.
An entire album, divided in four movements (First movement, second movement - Part 1 & 2 and third movement) . In each movement one of the instruments is highlighted and has it's room to play and shine.
Won't tell more, but just choose one movement and be surprised 🙂
You can find the studio version here on YT, but there is also footage of it available from a live performance from 1970 that was aired live on British TV.
    Sounds interesting? 😋

Nicely done! If I may make another recommendation my friend: Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe (studio version). I've not seen any other reaction channel cover this tune. Not sure, but I think it was a 1-hit wonder in the late '70s. Enjoy fren. (Note: I just watched this video that reminds me of your backgrounds - th-cam.com/video/XR2oct3zeTM/w-d-xo.html )

Hi Brandon, "Nights in White Satin" was their biggest hit. When I was a teenager and we went to what we called here in Europe Disco Clubs, we invited the person we liked to dance when this song was played, and it was conducive to rapprochement LOL. I didn't know this live version until recently, the orchestral part at the end gives it a new dimension that didn't exist on the original. Thanks for your reaction.
