Doctor: Sorry, Nico. I have diagnosed you with migraines Nico: (celebrates) Doctor: Why are you celebrating? Nico: You could’ve diagnosed me with coins!
Who else screamed at the screen when he said that the 2nd coin is impossible. I think it's possible with right timing with bouncing off the jumping thing.
About the final level, there's a glitch that allows you to go from the left of the screen to the right by getting "crushed" by the level's geometry, see it like in the original Mario Bros. where you could do the same thing. I don't know how it works, nor do I say it seems easy to do, but there's that.
One thing is that if you hold left whilst getting cut off to the left side of the screen, you will end up on the other side. The coins in 4-3 can be dodged with this technique.
Yes, it is. If and only if you're playing v1.0, whereby you can glitch your way out of the mandatory coin collection in level 4-3. If you're playing v 1.1, you're not finishing this game coinless.
7:25 my reaction was the same as Nico's I was "Oh no not again but wait there is platform and Nico could jump off the enemy." Then a few seconds later I was like "what another one well so much for collecting for one coin." This isn't possible anyways at least Nico got through that hell I bet he is glad that he is
Fun fact: you don't need to collect any coin in the first half of the game. In the second half there is no level where you can make it without collecting a coin.
Ooh, Super Mario Land coinless now? I did that (and even uploaded videos of doing it) about 9 months ago, so I can immediately say that YES, you can beat SML without touching a single coin! However, certain coins in world 3 are extremely tricky to avoid, and there's a spot in world 4-3 which requires a version-specific glitch to get past. (1:52) It is possible to slip past those coins while big (I did so in my video playthrough), but yeah, it's much easier to run under them while small. (4:10) Nice! I believe I did it with a running jump from the previous step, carefully aimed such that I didn't bonk my head on the ? blocks above. (4:59) False. You _can_ successfully jump above them, which is what I did in my playthrough. If you're big Mario, and you jump while ducking, you go 5 tiles high, and it's possible to barely clear those coins that way. It's also possible to time it so that you bounce off the fishbone enemy while doing a running jump from further to the left, and clear the coins that way. (5:14, 5:36) Wow, nice. I figured it was possible to go under those, but I found it easier to go above them. (6:38) This part was a true stumper for me at first, but I found a way to get past these coins, which I showed at the end of my final episode. (7:02) Making use of that jumping winged statue enemy is exactly how I cleared those coins, and it fortunately works on all three such formations in the level, because that enemy is present in the same way each time! (7:13) I guess I should link you to the video where I show that I cleared those coins. I'll make a separate comment containing the video link as a reply to this comment. (7:45) Oh, that's clever! Too bad it doesn't work for the first such coin formation in the level. However, the method I used _does_ work for all three of them. (8:16, 8:38) These coins in 3-2 were the hardest for me to figure out how to dodge. It requires getting up to the top path early in the level (via a hidden block above the first quartet of ? blocks), and making like pixel-perfect frame-perfect jumps to stay up there. (9:20) This platform jump is indeed possible without touching a coin, but it took me several dozen tries to do so (thank god I was on an emulator and using savestates). (9:35) LOL. I did show off which pipes you didn't want to enter during the game, as well as which pipes were safe to enter. (10:21) "Le epic troll coin wall LOL" can be cleared with a ducking jump as big Mario to jump 5 tiles high from the platform while it's at its highest, which is just enough to clear the block wall above. (Be careful not to hit the hidden 1-up block just above that coin wall, and be careful of the square of coins just on the other side of that wall.) (11:50) NOOOOO!!!!! ...Except, you _CAN_ avoid those with a glitch on version 1.0! Hold left as a wall pushes you off the left edge of the screen, and you won't die, and will instead eventually reappear on the right. You can use this to completely skip that coin room! You'll then be "out of bounds", but if you perform the glitch again, you should be able to get back "in bounds". (12:28) You can skip all these coins with that same glitch too!
Here's my 4-episode playlist of completing all of Super Mario Land totally coinless: th-cam.com/play/PLSPzYBb2VSjHTdw_eXBk6Z8my896fN_pm.html Episode 3 shows me eventually succeeding at the pixel-perfect jump at the start of 3-3, and episode 4 shows how I got past the seemingly unavoidable coins in 3-1, 3-2, and 4-3.
There's a bug in one of the versions of the game where you can screenwrap in the plane to the right side of the screen. Maybe try again to skip the huge box at the end to see the actual number?
I remember this game. When I was young I played this game so often, but I failed every day. Suddenly I came to the spider world but then I lost. I was very sad about this. Thank you for sharing this great experience
I think this might help improve the total amount of coins needed to beat Super Mario Land! World 1: th-cam.com/video/2Af-7IwPCtA/w-d-xo.html World 2: th-cam.com/video/JWTPR2TKriM/w-d-xo.html World 3: th-cam.com/video/vxn19-maCxA/w-d-xo.html World 4: th-cam.com/video/ShL5jaVcFXY/w-d-xo.html
This was very nostalgic for me as I owned this game back in the day and was sufficiently good at it to beat it twice consecutively reaching the level jump feature I wouldn't want to try and do it with minimum coins though!
That room with 13 unavoidable coins was just the perfect troll. Obviously, the devs didn't make the game with any regard to coinless runs. The chaos of life, however, had other plans...
10:02 to be precise, Pionpis (yes, it's their official name) are based around a Jiang Shi, which is kinda like a Chinese vampire. They move by bouncing around and are controlled through a seal of paper on their frown
Super Mario Land has a surprisingly great soundtrack for a Game Boy game. Every track is memorable and catchy, and I think it’s better than the soundtracks of the other 8-bit Mario games, even Mario 3.
7:13 It's possible to dodge that coin, but it's SO HARD you need to manipulate Mario and everything, a TAS could do it, but it's VERY HARD!!!!! (but possible) 10:10 Nintendo was making hot garbage even in Super Mario Bros. (4-4, 7-4 and 8-4) and a LOT MORE in the Lost Levels (find the hidden blocks, and also dumb pick-a-path) 11:50 Use the screen wrapping trick!!! (it's actually SUPER EASY) 13:11 The total is only of 1 coin, all the others can be skipped. The tight jump in 1-3 can be skipped completely, and don't worry, it won't softlock you, but trigger an exit.
8:02 There actually _is_ a platform the that I believe you can manage to get on by replicating the same trick to avoid the coin from before (by timing your jump for the moving platform at the right time and jumping off the enemy as it falls) You're welcome :]
11:52 im not sure if this will work. But im pretty sure that there was a glitch where you can stay behind a wall while the screen is scrolling. Then, mario teleports to the right side of the screen. You could stay behind the bottom of the wall and wait for the screen to scroll and teleport you. But im not sure
On the topic of 4-3... Are you aware of the screen wrap glitch? On that level specifically you can get pushed off the left side of the screen by a wall and end up on the right side of the screen, which would allow you to skip all those coins in 4-3.
The one where you had to position the enemy so you can walk off and jump off the enemy and then reach the ledge, the one after that might be possible if you time the enemy with the moving platform. The one you were talking about earlier could be possible as well but IDK, so I think 19 or 20 is the total
Pretty good video, but there are a few things I wanna point out Spoilers below: It actually is possible to beat the game coinless, but everything is just really precise In 3-1, you can jump from the question mark block near the coin walls In 3-2, there are invisible blocks near the start of the stage that let you run across the top of the screen and skip everything, but there are some precise jumps in there 3-3 is possible, but the jump is nearly pixel perfect In 4-1, you can jump on the block platform above the coin wall to avoid it 4-3 is possible. Near the walls by the coins, you have to hold left and/or down so you can clip through the ground and avoid the coins Only in version 1.0 tho, it got patched out in v 1.1 Might show these off actually, who knows ;)
For the second coin collected in 3-1, it looks like there's a moving platform on the right. The timing for it would be ATROCIOUS but could you use the jumping enemy to fall off and land on that platform? If so, it would cut out that coin completely, dropping you down to 20 coins instead of 21. It's...not much, but hey, every deadly coin avoided counts, right? Please thumbs up this so Nico sees!
10:15 could'nt you go under those coins whit some timing🤔 8:00 and there's that moving platform, you could use that '' bounsing enemy'' to get there 7:40 🙄

Pretty good video, but there are a few things I wanna point out
Spoilers below:
It actually is possible to beat the game coinless, but everything is just really precise
In 3-1, you can jump from the question mark block near the coin walls
In 3-2, there are invisible blocks near the start of the stage that let you run across the top of the screen and skip everything, but there are some precise jumps in there
3-3 is possible, but the jump is nearly pixel perfect
In 4-1, you can jump on the block platform above the coin wall to avoid it
4-3 is possible. Near the walls by the coins, you have to hold left and/or down so you can clip through the ground and avoid the coins
Only in version 1.0 tho, it got patched out in v 1.1
Might show these off actually, who knows ;)
I do a coinful run where I collect a load of coins
21 coins, enough to go bowling with Roman!
At 11:50, you can perform a glitch where you are on top of the entire coin room thing.

If so, it would cut out that coin completely, dropping you down to 20 coins instead of 21. It's...not much, but hey, every deadly coin avoided counts, right? Please thumbs up this so Nico sees!
Nico here is trying to beat it while not touching a single coin while I’m sitting here trying to beat 2-2.
