Small correction: "Daijoubu" on its own is a statement of reassurrance and actually means, "It's alright," or, "Everything's fine". "Are you okay?" would be "Daijoubu desuka?" It's still pretty funny!

In the context of the book, I prefer to call it "You'll be fine" 🤣

Strangely, unless, the localization _is_ translation from the original language but turned out to be ended up deemed *too broken* due to lack of interest and the grammars should be "TL;DR" in there but I thought it was no one whatever some-so ever at all.

I like this lengthy format with all the comparisons of versions. It's a different approach than the "Battle of the Ports" videos, or similar fare. I think it works well, and it's cool to get the historical context with each release as well. Good stuff!

You can tell that a Herculean amount of effort and detail went into this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for this. I hope to see future shmup releases that will deserve this type of deep dive.

I'm already in the midst of getting another similar one on the go. Still have some of the subject matter inbound through the mail, but I've already got at least some footage and it's probably gonna be a crowd-pleaser: Tatsujin & Truxton.

DOJ is far from my favorite CAVE game or bullet hell but I think it is one of the most important games of its genre. I sort of see Ketsui and DOJ as being the married couple royalty of bullet hell games. I may never one all either one, but it’s fun to just play even a small part of such a tightly designed, polished, brutal piece of art.

    • @StudioMudprints
      @StudioMudprints  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I can feel that, especially with Ketsui. I know for me, too, a 1-all for either would require far too much dedication for the time being, but... maybe some day. Black label tho. Gotta be.

    Great work!
Dai-Ou-Jou's been that one game from the people at Cave that took me quite a while to get into, and once I did, it became a masterpiece in my eyes. I love your dedication to seeing every single port!

I really appreciate the honesty of your take on (the many forms of) DOJ. It's often hailed as the jewel in Cave's crown, but few people are able to explain what it is exactly that makes it stand out in such a positive way in what is already an oeuvre of genre masterclasses, and it can come across as fans just aping certain authorative opinions.

Finally it's here! Really enjoyed this episode.
This was my first foray into DOJ and had such a blast with it, even if it kicked my arse. Luna Tour especially was a great way to experience harder difficulty in smaller chunks at a time.
Now to praying we get Futari or SDOJ from M2 in the future.
Excited to see the next episodes. Short or long vids, both are very enjoyable to watch!

  • @flottenheimer

    Incredible work. Thank you.
To me, the biggest fault with this release is just too many versions. 2 or 3 versions would have been more than enough in my book (just White + Black, perhaps).
Not into movies with regular releases, directors cut, extended directors cut, special edition etc, either.
I know I am probably alone on this. And it is a truly awesome release. Loving it (played only Black Label so far).
Thank you for explaining all the differences, though. Much appreciated. Keep up your great work.

Fantastic video as always, and I'd love to see more like this! I'm with you on White Label, it's just too brutal to be enjoyable, but in a lot of ways it felt like Cave was still figuring things out and it was vital to that whole process.

Holy hell this was a treat! I've always thought of this channel as more of a "shoot em up show" and this series has absolutely cemented that notion.

This is excellent. The amount of information, the editing, the format, the gameplay (you are pretty good actually!)... you are a terrific content creator, I mean it. As hard as it is to get big when you are specialised in such a niche genre, this channel deserves to be huge. In any case, as can be seen in the comments, you have many passionate followers. Thank you, and keep them coming :D
As for the game, it's a masterpiece. But yeah, not for everybody. I see your points. Besides the hardcore gameplay, which is indeed frustrating, there is something very interesting in this game that I don't think you mentioned: its sad, post-apocalyptic atmosphere. I truly love it.
And btw Kenichiro Fukui is amazing. Einhänders music is forever ingrained in my mind. What a game that is... I dream of a remaster.

Really enjoyed hearing your take on DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou, haven't taken the plunge into BL arcade yet but I had fun with the M2 port arrange modes (I felt a bit sorry for the nerfed hibachi in them though!).
I think your commitment to creating such an informative and entertaining video despite not being 100% sold on the material is commendable too, especially in this long form format (which I think is ace and would love to see more of!).
Guess the game was pretty Daijoubu for you, I'm hoping to find more from it if I go on to try the BL 1-ALL but we'll see!

Good video, nice overview of DOJ. I guess in the end, fun is totally subjective and relative though. For the insanely high-skill, technical superplayer who revels in punishment and mastery, DOJ white label is a heavenly experience. It's everything they want to see in a video game, a chance for them to express their gaming skills at the highest levels. For the average person into shmups and danmaku though, it will generally be a tour through the darkest recesses of hell, especially in trying to nab that evil, evil 2-All... Funny how that works, huh? Hahaha.

As a mobile phone player, I absolutely LOVE the iOS ports of the Cave shmups. I‘d argue that touch screen controls are the most precise input method for the genre. I just love the micro-precision. Happy to see you covered the iOS version in this great video, and liking it as well. DaiOuJou aka Blissful Death - to me - is perfect. While I initially preferred Resurrection as well, DaiOuJou grew on me, and I think there is no other shmup with a better pacing and better difficulty curve out there. Resurrection‘s last stage is simply a little too long and too annoying. Anyways, thanks for this very informative video!

I like lengthy contents like this (and the algorithm these days prefer these anyway). I'd like to see more of these.
I'm more of an SDOJ guy myself. DOJ is... too Stockholm syndrome-y to me :P. Among the 3 DDP games with Hyper, this is the only one where the Hyper fill can INCREASE DYNAMICALLY TO POSSIBLY ABSURD LEVELS, since the Hyper fill from the bee items scale directly with the Hit count when picked up! DFK and SDOJ give the Hyper fills at predictable rates, which I appreciate more. DOJ's skill floor is much higher possibly due to this.

yea white label definitely wasn't meant to be fun lol. it made a lot of bizarre decisions, like having the same hitbox as ddp despite having way more bullets, not giving you many hypers to work with, the infamous rails in stage 4, loop 1 being essentially a loading screen, not letting you continue in loop 2, suzaku and byakko being extremely dumb in loop 2, and a trash tlb that can only be beaten by spamming hypers. it's definitely harder than black label but not in a fun way imo
anyways the real masterpiece is dangun feveron

I didn't like DFK's stage obstacles that required to laser them away. There's nothing wrong with that, it just wasn't what I like in a shmup. DOJ is a much more straight forward shooter in that respect, even though I agree that it was probably meant as a quarter muncher because of the unexpected success of the outsourced/licensed DDP II. I can definitely see that DFK is class, and it's obviously much easier to get ahold of ($20, available outside of Japan), so it's probably still the best entry point to the series. No wrong choices here, and I do hope that at some point, SDOJ will also be ported. PS: The iOS version of DOJ is probably the most fun I've had with a shmup in a long time, the touch movement is awesome. It does make it a very different game, but I highly recommend it to any iOS user.

Great review. The comparison with the previous versions is not only interesting from a technical perspective but also from a historical one. Unfortunately, it also shows that some of ports are upgrades in one area and downgrades in another - I guess the switch version can't be played via touch screen like ios? While DOJ isn't my cup of tea (that distinction goes to DFK, obviously, though I've yet to try the other games in the series) it has its charm for those intrested in the thrill of difficulty, or for a causal easier approach. But yeah, cool feature covering all of its ports. And I'd would like to see other games in the future get this kind of treatment for their own episodes covering all of their ports (so far), especailly ones to revisit too, when they're also getting modern/current gen ports too. (Like maybe say...the possiblity of Exelica and Shiki 2 getting their own features down the line?)
