    This is how sex feels. To finally have easily accessible videos on a super niche topic. The only other shows I see here are STG Weekly, which are long videos that most wouldn't dedicate their time to, and Bullet Heaven by Studio Mudprints, who seem to review shmups quite competently and even have episodes addressing some errors. So they're super honest.

    Scoring is all abstract. Shoot em ups jumped species when the Cave era gained momentum, Progear being a feathered dinosaur with the pretty pixel art and screen full of bullet patterns. When bullet patterns and scoring mechanics eventually became dominant, the gameplay was all about pushing past the technical limits. The rules are front and center. A 1cc run is a different experience than pure score chasing, though the shoot em up experience is always about working along the limit. It would be interesting if someone designed a shooter where the survival experience differs dramatically from the high score experience with different rewards and incentives for each. As far as I know no one has, but I’m far from an expert. The classic style shoot em ups had more shots directed at the player and environmental hazards seemed more prevalent. In Lightening Force, a phenomenal case, the enemies themselves are usually more dangerous than any shots fired. Environmental obstacles block shots too. The setting seemed to matter more in games like that. Using the whole screen by flooding it with bullet patterns creates a different mentality and it’s a full leap into abstraction. It’s a bit more psychological, remaining calm while seeing the form through all the chaos. You can’t let it shake you and you usually only need to move the ship/character slightly. There’s a Zen to it.

    Although I grew up on CAVE shmups, I've always found myself drawn to Raizing Shmups more. There something about they're artistic style that felt.... Different and refreshing. Batrider and Battle Garegga are great examples, in terms of design and setting.

      Raizing shmups are definitely unique, they have a vibe and a feel that you really can't find anywhere else. I'm starting to spend more time with them as well, especially Garegga :-D Thanks for watching!

    V・V aka Grind Stormer also from 1993 done by Ikeda had more bullets then regular STG´s back in the day. From that point on you can say, upcoming games tend to be having more and more stuff stooting at you. Now I wanna play Donpachi... I think this is the 3rd video I saw from you, now finaly subscibed. Keep that good stuff coming and hav a good one.

    I think Truxton II was already starting to build the bridge between classic shmups and bullet hell, and Toaplan released it a year before Batsugun.

    I've been intrigued with shmups since back in the early 90's, a couple years ago I found the electric underground pod cast and started listening, I will listen to him at night till I fall asleep. Had no idea he had a TH-cam! I cant stop watching! Thank you so much for what you do! I've made my custom arcade stick, and bought all cave games on steam with everything on switch. I'm only a casual player, but I play as much as I can with a 32" tate. I just have such a love for all these games, thanks to you!

    Very happy how the video tuned out! The Mahou OST info was very cool to know and the analogy between Raizing STGs and SNK King Of Fighters franchise was absolutely brilliant!
    I would like to add a nice fact: you correctly pointed out how Mahou Daisakusen was the spiritual successor of the Seirei Senshi Spriggan series. Well, Seirei Senshi Spriggan originally was meant to be the successor (as Seirei Senshi Aleste) of the great Mega Drive shmup MUSHA Aleste dating back to 1990 . Long story short, Compile steered away from the Aleste franchise since Naxat was publishing the game on PC Engine and was hoping to start his own STG franchise. Actually, if you play both MUSHA and Garegga, you can see some similarities between the two of them, most notably the "changing option formation" system.

      I'm really happy you liked the video! Man I really wanted to do that topic justice, so I hope I was able to do that :-) That's a really cool fact about MUSHA! My dude you must have a crazy in depth knowledge of the genre, especially classic shmups!

    Armed police Batrider is my favorite Raizing games! its like combining all Raizing game into one game (Mahou,Garegga,Batrider, sadly no Soukyugurentai). it's like playing shmup with Garegga mechanic, but with Mahou graphic(especially the enemy bullet visual are more visible there). also i love they're add Mahou and Garegga ost and bosses there. like you said, its like KOF of Raizing Shmup.

    Interesting to hear how combos in shooters were inspired by then in fighters. I read that combos in fighting games were coded by accident - the capability was a bug in early builds but they kept it in as part of the game because of the added depth it introduced.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah ha, I believe that is accurate. Another fun fact is that the increased gameplay speed of Super Turbo was influenced by the existence of a bootleg dubbed "rainbow edition" that sped up the gameplay and was broken in the most fun and silly way ha. Thanks for watching my dude!!

    Same, every time I see Gain or Miyamoto I think of Battle Garegga first, especially Kamui using Gain for the WRs haha, the first time I've ever seen them was while watching Jaimers 1cc on Garegga, he was playing Miyamoto and I was like 'what the heck? it seems to be someone on a jetpack, it doesnt really fit the aesthetics of the game but this is honestly pretty damn cool I wanna play with it'

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the Mahou characters in Garegga are awesome. They don't fit into the game's style necessarily, but they still do in a strange way ha, especially my boy Gain and his swords! I also really like Silversword, but wish it is a little stronger ha.

  • @bonggzilla

    This was never a problem for me because my first played spaceship Shooter was 1984 when i was four years old 😅and i never stopped playing them until nowadays!! so the way from normal Shooter to Bullet hell Shooter was a normal progress.
    some genres are evolving with time thats the way it goes.
    go and imagine playing a fighting game without supercombo specials?
    it wouldnt be the same
    there are great nu retro shooters out there (super hydorah,infinos gaiden,wolflame etc) dont get me wrong but they feel very vintage in comparison sometimes 😅

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    raizing games having such an unique style they are really special!
    the drawn sprites and the music is so damn good 😎 but i see myself playin cave games way more frequently then raizing games because of the core gameplay.

    Stage 1 and 3 can't be full chained in DDP, and this applies to both loops. (Every stage in DOJ can be full chained though)

      Oh hey I know you from somewhere, person with the Zun Youmu portrait. Probably watched your earlier 2hu vids.
      Also Stage 3 is dumb lol. You get higher boss hits than you do the actual stage if you pointblank the boss' core before the 4 turrets are targetable.

    This video is obviously for hardcore players only who know all these games. For me just playing the two Mushihimes actively, this whole video is fairly confusing with all the switching back and forth between the features of these games you mentioned. I'd probably have to google like 90% of stuff you mentioned so I basically tapped out.
