TJH3113 Your attitude and approach to the Bass rocks. I agree with J.J.....keeping the Music REAL is important. Remembering Jessica Simpson's epic fail when her autotone/ clic tracks went out is priceless. My Wife teases me and calls me an elitist when I complain about stuff being fake or copied but I tell her I'm an average bassist who DOES play my own bass. I'm so glad to see other musicians feel that way too.
Mate, not only do you play it very, VERY well but your slower renditions are very clear due to your technique. I've only watched two of your videos so far, and your the first person to get me anywhere NEAR to understanding that goddamn 2nd Bass solo for a start!!! Well done and thanks
Thank you for taking the time to show these. You make better bass players of us all! I've struggled with this song for a while, but this is very helpful! Keep up the awesome work!
agreed! This also is the video that finally taught me that Middle Bass Solo or the second solo riff.. which I was trying to learn for 30 years!! Thank You!!
I've been watching both videos numerous times and this one in particular I gotta say, when you play it slowly, I kept track of your time with the metronome and IT IS FLAWLESS!!.. Two thumbs up. Edit: We all know you must've played this piece at least 50 times to achieve this perfection.LOL
Hola, I've been playing this song for years and if I put it down for awhile, I have to regain my chops for it! lol.. what I like about you is the fact that you can play it about as good as it can be played and your forthcoming about your own interpretations. Its hard to speak somebody's distinct language (especially like Geddy) perfectly. So many people out there posting vids of themselves "confidently hacking" this tune like they own it!
robert swearingen You hit it out of the park, a lot of people actually get really pissed when you ask ...'Are you sure that's on the money???' Nothing wrong with someone saying..' This is as close (IMO) as I can get...so see what you can add to it.' The above Bassist s damned good, it's not like he picked some simple pop music to take apart and learn. The ass clown who thought his playing was beyond reproach or critique is (aptly named ) a hack who calls himself.. PUDSY. I tried to explain to him that we're ALL works in progress and practice along with lessons works in a positive way.
I totally agree and after All these years. Thanks to you for your instructional videos. Even a 40 year bass player myself. Needs a little help now & then. Thanks again my Bass brother. Soon after my left thumb heals from my Trigger Thumb operation. I’m gonna put my video of YYZ on You Tube. Thanks Again!
@c033954 Thanks a lot. I'm really glad you found it useful. I'll give some thought to Territories. I haven't covered that one because of the long segments where the bass sits out. Aside from that I like that song a lot.
@TJH3113 - I agree! Very tough to nail that slide once you get into the "groove", and when figuring it out, (even slowed down) it's difficult to pick out the last few notes as he barely plays them. I recall messing with that one for an hour once and nothing sounded right. I've also heard the "many incarnations" of that riff on different performances.
Perfect ...part by part !! I´ve spent a lot of time before, searching for, listening to master tracks,videos and one tab from Alvabass that seeemed for me the most accurate..to "study" YYZ..and your job....is perfect !!! Thanks my friend.. This makes me want to take this song again...and work on it again..=)
@TheNitto25 Gee, thanks a lot. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and always feel I can do better but I'm glad you found the video helpful. I had a mid 80's Ibanez Roadstar 2 as well. It had 2 humbuckers and the tuners were two to a side. Did a lot of gigging and recording with that bass.
Dude! Whenever I have a great song that gives me trouble I open your channel and see if you covered the song. I have figured out many parts with your help.
Great job on the solos. Been looking for an explaination like yours for a long time. Lots of videos out there just don't sound right. You break it down to the most basic level which is what alot of us need. Thanks again for putting the time in and creating an excellent tutorial of this legendary song. Please consider doing "Territories" from Power Windows. I would really like to see that one.
Thanks Troy for doing that.. is very nice from you..i learned this one probally like 3 or 4 months ago but i realize that i have some mistakes in some of the bass solos so thats very very helpfull...you are doing it very good..
I've been using the sheet music/ bass tab from the Deluxe Bass Tab Collection and it is not perfect either. Thanks for giving me more insite to how to riff that stuff. I will definitly use some of your techniques. This was very helpful. This is a tough song.
@vtx1300dave Thank you Dave and while I have gone to great lengths to learn and play these songs "note for note" this is one of the few which I adapted to suit my abilities. As my playing progressed, I really put a lot of focus on the very things you mentioned - clarity, timing and unwanted noise. It's important to not only play the correct notes but to achieve as "quality" a sound out of each individual note as possible and keeping strings from ringing out - proper muting techniques etc...
Nice work. Those 1st two solos have always been a bear to pick out. It's funny, when we all first heard them, we were blown away by the 3rd one, but it's the easiest one to pick by far! In contrast, the first two go by so darned fast you wonder just what the heck he played. IIRC, the song is done on the jazz, but the rick was used for the solos and was a bit more distorted. this is easier to pick out with the track slow and solo. I play the 1st a bit different, but just by a note or 2.
@CosmoKrameryyz Thanks. I'm not sure if I'll get the 30th anniversary disc. I have a surround system but never ever find myself sitting down and just listening to music. This is enough website for me thanks.
Thank you for this :) I found this incredibly useful as well as thorough ! I never quite understood the dynamic of this song as well as I do now thanks to you.
@WelshPhantom Thanks. Same here with choking on the second solo. Usually happens if I'm digging in too hard. Trust me when I say that you don't want to know what I'm doing at the end of the song - complete fabrication. I should listen to the isolated bass track to see if I can tell what's really happening there, but at this point I'll probably stick with what I've come up with.
@boothsgardenstudios I know he used both basses on that album but I'm not sure which songs he used which bass on. I've seen the discussion on-line before so you should be able to find out if you do a little digging.
Awesome tutorial! This has helped a ton. I know its been so long since you posted this video, but do you think you could possibly do a tutorial/breakdown of the little part right before the end of the song where Geddy goes into playing those incredibly fast triplets? That's the only part I can't seem to get.
***** Thanks. It never occurred to me to do that last riff because I'm totally hacking it myself and don't think what I'm playing would be worth showing anyone. I just came up with something that fit the rhythm and what notes I "could" decipher.
Nice video. Ive always been a musician, but only started bass a few days ago. I've already had an understanding of the notes, and stuff, and I'm a big rush fan, and this video definitely helped clarify the bass part for me. not perfect, but nice job, and thanks alot.
@ivanmike1968 The middle one is the one that always gave me trouble. The first solo I play my own way so I'm pretty confident playing it. The last one is fairly straightforward but the middle one...even if you listen to ten different clips of Geddy himself playing it, you can hear that even he has varying degrees of success nailing it.
nice, between this and the isolated bass track, I'm well on my way to learning this one. I slow down the isolated track to get the notes exactly correct, but these 2 videos helped get me off the ground
for anyone else that may stumble here, this video is also invaluable, it's geddy's isolated track from the album: th-cam.com/video/hPAqEQ1_ctQ/w-d-xo.html
in this video you said that you try to learn your covers as closely to how the artist plays it as you can. i really respect that... and i could tell you do that before you said anything about it. it really shows... thanks
"I'm just happy that I made it to that point" as a comment on the third solo it's waaaaay too accurate of a feeling. It's so hard to get your hands to move so damn fast!
On this, I used the treble and bass knobs on the amp. On some later videos I used my SansAmp Bass Driver. I go over how I record briefly in the information section of my channel if you're interested.
Hey I'd like to say a couple things. I picked up a bass last month, and i figured I'd give myself a headstart by learning this song. Your videos helped me figure out the song when online tabs weren't helping much. Keep up the great work, you've helped out more people than what the comment board says. Second, I have a B50 bass. The bridge pickup has a twangy noise, but nowhere near the growl yours has. What pickup would you recommend me replacing it with? Thanks
Fantastic Troy, and I have a huge favour to ask. Can you post a video like this teaching that fast part at the very end of the song? I have no idea what is going on there. Thanks
Thank you man...you are awesome!! i have one question: the first bass solo is taken by the original song? or the live performance? (sorry for my English...i am Chilean) (=
You know Troy, It seems we all want to hear our favorite songs the exact way we first heard them. Fact is, by the time these songs go on stage they all almost get recreated by their origonal authors. This is done because as musicians we are always changing things up for a couple of reasons. First reason is to always challange our selves. Second is to keep from becoming bored and complacent. Third and I quote the great JPJ is "Mainly because I cant remember how I did it" So we need not worry:)
me again , I know its not a real fender, but I found a squire jazz that moded more put some seymore Duncan quarter pounders, a high mass bridge an a .047 bumblebee cap an it sounds great, pretty sure with a little work I'll have that tone down, thanks again for writing an helping me find my way thru this music. this squire does play great. I have 11 Spector's so I know what a great bass plays like an for what this Squire bass cost it's fantastic
Thanks Troy, I was waiting for part 2, it was very helpful to see it done slow and very hard as i can guess... anyway great job as usual and have you had time for the tempus fugit song?
I just found this, and I have to say that it's helpful, and it made me reconsider trying to master YYZ within a year of starting on bass. I cknowledge your disclaimer, and I feel like someone else has said it, but would it be easier to hit the high notes on the 3rd solo by playing 5th and 4th fret of the G string? I only say this after watching some live videos. Other than that, this is definitely a help, and I'm looking forward to the next NTBL.
I haven’t done a proper one but I did something as a personal favor for a friend. You can find it in my “Unlisted” playlist. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.
I really like how many RUSH tracks you do because, besides a little heavy stuff, that is all I listen to. Whenever I try to learn something or if I am just screwing around with something hard like YYZ then I can watch your channel and I can see how it is played. Today I spent about two hours on lakeside park, and watching you really helped. Thank you so much. Btw, do you like it or hate it when the string hits the open pickup? I like it in some things, (I have a '79 4001 so I hear it a lot) but in other things, it just makes me cringe.
Thanks. I'm glad to hear that you find the videos helpful. Do you mean the clack you get when the string hits the magnet? I don't mind it unless it really sticks out. My black bass had a problem with that. I thought about putting a small piece of electrical tape over the pole but didn't want a sticky mess left behind when it wore off. I wound up putting a drop of my wife's clear coat nail polish on it and it seemed to soften it a bit.
Yeah, I play parts of it slightly differently, but then so does Ged live. I watch you do these things seemingly effortlessly and I think, Damn, whats wrong with me? So its good to hear you discus your difficulties and approximations lol I like to add a bend to the harmonics on the solo too, no one else ever does that, but its fun. Press on the back of the neck forward and the front of the body back and release
great job! one question: i play a fender jazz as well - are you dialing down the neck pick-up at all to get a more punchy sound or are the volume knobs all the way up? thanks.
I'm finding the hardest part of this is learning to pluck those triplets! I'm practicing it every day, and my right hand is having a hell of a time getting used to that muscle motion. So, I'm wondering something: when you pluck the triplets, would it be okay to pluck using middle finger first, then the index (in other words, M-I-I instead of I-M-M)?
Most definitely - use whichever finger feels most natural to use is fine. It doesn't matter which one it is, it still works out the same. Remember, you are only plucking the first two notes. The third note is played, courtesy of gravity, when your finger lands on the string below.
I appreciate your videos, you are the first "you tuber" I have actually followed. You must have a really good job to afford that awesome bass collection! I look forward to your song breakdowns! Question - what amp are you playing through for this?
Thank you for your support. My wife and I are strictly middle class, I drive a Class B truck for a living. We do not have children and have been able to remain, pretty much, debt-free. I think I got off pretty cheap for my mid-life crisis. Fortunately, my tastes were never too terribly extravagant. For this video, I was using my old/original method of recording. I was playing straight into a small Fender SP-10 guitar practice amp. A small, desktop microphone was capturing the music, as well as the bass.
From what my Brother tells me you would be absolutely correct! I have never had the great fortune to actually see them live:( I hear it said you could put the CD in duiring one of their concerts and they would in perfect time and note for note! With that said I just believe it is important for folks not to get wound up to tight, at least at first with being perfect with the recording. But in time I believe you should for the challenge as well as for the lessons in it.
Not clear on why you use the word "attempt"... You're very accomplished. These are great performances. The guitar volume and vocal volume could be more even but I'm grateful. Just a guitar player learning these songs for a 3-piece in which the other guitarist and I switch bass/guitar duties. I love playing RUSH on bass...Who wouldn't :-)
I'm 19 and I've been working on this song for a year and I still haven't gotten it under my fingers :( I don't know if I ever will. This song is on my bucket list but I doubt I'll ever be able to play it no matter how long I've been playing bass. No matter what practice methods I use I can't play it at the record speed like everyone else on TH-cam.
+bdmstrings Some content holders don't allow videos to be played on mobil devices so that might explain some of the missing videos. Others may have been blocked without me knowing. Are there any videos in particular that you were looking for that are not available?
I get very distracted when watching your videos for some reason... lol - even so, great bass skills sir. I would hope that Geddy himself would be proud.
DUDE YOU ARE NOT MISREPRESENTING ANYTHING. YOUR RENDITIONS ARE INCREDIBLE!!!!
Thanks.
I love this tutorial, slowly played and well recorded. This works so much better than many other tutorials on TH-cam. Hope to see more! Thanks a lot!
I been listening to YYZ for many, many years and your interpretation sounds absolutely bang on! Wonderful playing!!! Thank you for uploading!!
Thanks a lot.
so awesome to see that real music and real dedication to real art is still alive. I cant say enough about your bass playing dude.
Thanks a lot. That was nice of you to say.
TJH3113 Your attitude and approach to the Bass rocks. I agree with J.J.....keeping the Music REAL is important. You should get the Nobel Peace Prize for this video! Thanks so much, I couldn't get past these parts before. You did a great thing here!
Aw, you think? Thanks a lot. I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thank you.
50 times? More like 500. Haha.
Perfect or not, this is still by far the best explanation video for the song I've ever found! Thanks for the help, great playing too
The second of Geddy’s bass fills has baffled me constantly. Thank you for showing me how I should have been doing it. You are awesome indeed. ✌🏻❤️
I'm very glad to hear that you found the video helpful. Thanks for letting me know.
I've been playing this song for years and I did come away with a riff. Excellent job.
Where would I be without your videos - I wouldn't have a hope in hell at learning YYZ without this video, thanks so much!
This is a great ....nice to hear the two different bass tones between the Rick and the Jazz ,thanks for posting
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Thank you a lot, kind sir! I was having a hard time deciphering what he would do in the bass solo's and you've really cleared up the fog.
Hola, I've been playing this song for years and if I put it down for awhile, I have to regain my chops for it! lol.. what I like about you is the fact that you can play it about as good as it can be played and your forthcoming about your own interpretations. This is as close (IMO) as I can get...so see what you can add to it.' The above Bassist s damned good, it's not like he picked some simple pop music to take apart and learn. The ass clown who thought his playing was beyond reproach or critique is (aptly named ) a hack who calls himself.. PUDSY. I tried to explain to him that we're ALL works in progress and practice along with lessons works in a positive way.
I love your bass tone. You are very gifted. I will master this by the end of the year
Thanks.
Thank you very much. I'm really glad that you found the video useful.
I'll be sure to check out the CTTH video.
Glad to help, Steve! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@c033954
Thanks a lot. I'm really glad you found it useful. I'll give some thought to Territories. I haven't covered that one because of the long segments where the bass sits out. Aside from that I like that song a lot.
Thank you, for slowing it down. I still had to play it at .25x speed on the bass solo at 3:10 but I got it now! You're the bomb!
I'm so glad that you found it helpful. Thanks.
@TJH3113 - I agree! Very tough to nail that slide once you get into the "groove", and when figuring it out, (even slowed down) it's difficult to pick out the last few notes as he barely plays them. I recall messing with that one for an hour once and nothing sounded right. I've also heard the "many incarnations" of that riff on different performances.

this guy here is far the best on doing bass covers and is very inspirational bass player and an extremely accurate bass player. AWSOME!
Dude! Whenever I have a great song that gives me trouble I open your channel and see if you covered the song. I have figured out many parts with your help.
Dry Clean Super Center Thanks. I'm glad if you found some of the videos helpful.
Hmmmm...me too...hahaa..thx dude...great job !!!
Thank you for all of your videos! I really needed a real close-up view of this tune!
Its my pleasure! I hope it helps.
@kswee
Thank you. No, I haven't spent any time on Tempus Fugit but I'll try.
Great job on the solos. Been looking for an explaination like yours for a long time. Lots of videos out there just don't sound right. That's exactly what I do - use those last four C hits to set the tempo and then follow up with a silent four count.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us, I will always be in your debt Sir.
@CosmoKrameryyz
Thanks. I'm not sure if I'll get the 30th anniversary disc. I have a surround system but never ever find myself sitting down and just listening to music. This is enough website for me thanks.

@MrShelo09
Thank you. I learned it off the album, but, like I said, it's only as close as I could get it.
Seriously, you are really good and really on the dot. And your guitars always sound great, very jealous. lol....keep it coming
I'm glad you found it helpful and thanks for letting me know.
Take care and keep up the good work.
Excellent and accurate tutorial. Great playing
@boothsgardenstudios
I know he used both basses on that album but I'm not sure which songs he used which bass on. I've seen the discussion on-line before so you should be able to find out if you do a little digging.
@madrobotfan

Awesome tutorial! This has helped a ton. I know its been so long since you posted this video, but do you think you could possibly do a tutorial/breakdown of the little part right before the end of the song where Geddy goes into playing those incredibly fast triplets? Awesome! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Well done sir!!! Thank you for clarifying this monumental song!!!!
Thank you very much. I hope you found it helpful.
My pleasure. In this video I'm using a SansAmp Bass Driver which helps a bit.
in this video you said that you try to learn your covers as closely to how the artist plays it as you can. i really respect that... and i could tell you do that before you said anything about it. it really shows... thanks
Nice job Troy. Your NY accent is abundently clear here, along with the nicely played accents of this song.....lol
"I'm just happy that I made it to that point" as a comment on the third solo it's waaaaay too accurate of a feeling. It's so hard to get your hands to move so damn fast!

Thank you. I hope it was of some help.
You're a monster, man (in the good way, of course). Amazing tutorial.
@BrianSchultzBass
Thank you, I'm glad you found it helpful. I'm just a collector.
Fantastic Troy, and I have a huge favour to ask. Can you post a video like this teaching that fast part at the very end of the song? I have no idea what is going on there. Thanks
Thomas Seixas Thanks. I actually just do my own thing at the end.
Thanks a bunch for posting this. It's nearly impossible to hear precisely what Geddy is doing at many points on the recording.
I hope it was helpful.

Other than that, this is definitely a help, and I'm looking forward to the next NTBL.
Thanks for letting me know that you found it helpful.
Could you please consider doing a breakdown of the bass solo for Freewill???
I haven’t done a proper one but I did something as a personal favor for a friend. You can find it in my “Unlisted” playlist. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.
@frosty2none1
Good points all. RUSH probably plays their material, live, closer to the recorded music than most other bands.
So its good to hear you discus your difficulties and approximations lol
I like to add a bend to the harmonics on the solo too, no one else ever does that, but its fun. Press on the back of the neck forward and the front of the body back and release
We can only get so close to what Geddy does.
@MrAAO21
Thanks, I'm glad.
great job! one question: i play a fender jazz as well - are you dialing down the neck pick-up at all to get a more punchy sound or are the volume knobs all the way up? thanks.
@Dan441734
Thanks. And, what accent?
@magnafeye
Thank you very much and your welcome.
The third note is played, courtesy of gravity, when your finger lands on the string below.
did geddy use a jazz or a ricky on Moving Pictures - do u know?
@EZCreepin
Thank you.
Also i was wondering how you count into the climb? I tend to do it by repeating the 1-2-3-4 beat played on the c for the intro, but is that proper?
@@TJH3113 Amp sounds really good. I appreciate you taking time to share.
Bring the Ricky back! These vids are great, very helpful! Also enjoying the masks in the background...
@nozfe7
Glad it was of some help to you. Thanks.
Gracias a tus videos pude terminar de aprender YYZ, gracias!
¡Es bueno oir eso! Gracias por hacérmelo saber.
@Fezthelonebassist
Thank you. It was my pleasure.
hi mate, thanks for the lesson. I was wondering how you get that tone. its beautiful.
Keep at it and you'll get there.
I noticed some videos of yours are not available anymore... I wander what has happened
+bdmstrings Some content holders don't allow videos to be played on mobil devices so that might explain some of the missing videos. Others may have been blocked without me knowing. Are there any videos in particular that you were looking for that are not available?
+TJH3113 A few, actually... But specially Freewill, there's a tricky bass line during the guitar solo!
This is a great tutorial. Finaly learning to play this great song. Thanks!
Did you programm the drum track?
Thanks. No, it's the isolated drum tracks from TH-cam.
Thank you for commenting. It was my pleasure.
I get very distracted when watching your videos for some reason...
lol - even so, great bass skills sir. I would hope that Geddy himself would be proud.
Thanks.
@chrisrusty99
Thanks. I'm glad it helped.
