    The tip about switching out cargo size for more collector limpets depending on how long you like to spend mining is a great one. There's no point having a 500 ton cargo-hold which takes 2 hours to fill if you only like to mine in one hour sessions. Something so simple is yet often overlooked. I always end up picking up at least one or two tips from most of your tutorial vids

      If mining only for about an hour is desirable, I would use an Anaconda.
      Besides, it has better larger distro which easily powers 5 lasers, maybe even 6 if using weapon focused.

      Planning on getting the cutter, how much empire rank grind does it require?

    • @tommcsally4427
      @tommcsally4427 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to advance to the Empire rank of Duke, a fairly long process to be sure.
      But the grind is easy: it's called the Ngallin Run.
      You do Courier Data Delivery Missions between Hickam Survey in Ngallin and Mies Van Der Rohe's Claim in Mainani. The two systems are only 4 ly away from each other and there is only one station in each system so it's easy to grab a bunch of missions at each station and just shuttle back and forth.
      You need a small or medium ship because they are small stations. I used a Python with a bunch of cargo bays since you might have to do a cargo mission to rank up.
      There are plenty of "Empire grind" videos that explain the process, this one is short and to the point:

    Agreed, I can confirm this works, in fact I was rolling back to the station with over 250M, I think just 2 Mining lasers is fine, you do need at least 2 collector controllers, tried it with one and took a LOT longer. I am using a Cutter. Pirates will show up, I had 5 hitting me at the same time, but once you shoot back they will usually run. But allow space for some regular weapons.

    FYI you can also use a Keelback to do this on a (much) smaller scale:
    1x Class 5 Cargo Bay
    1x Class 5 SLF Hangar (optional, otherwise another cargo bay)
    2x Class 2 Fixed Mining Lasers
    1x Class 4D Shield
    1x Class 3A Collector Limpet
    1x Class 2 Refinery (any grade, you only need like 3 bins.)
    1x Class 1 Prospector
    1x Class 1 DSS Scanner
    2x Class 1 Turreted weapons (I recommend MCs, but your choice. Drag Munitions Frag turrets also a good choice.)
    I used this to unlock Selene Jean last week. In a regular painite hotspot (not even overlapping) I got 20t in less than 15 minutes. I used 10t to unlock her, then sold her the other 10t and made over 2.3mil credits on it. If I had filled the entire 32t cargo hold, I could've paid for the entire build in a single trip.
    So yeah, even if you aren't trying to pay for an A-rated Cutter and don't want to invest in a Type-9, just a cheap little Keelback can give you a couple million any time you need it.

    You can go into contacts and add the unwanted materials to ignore list, the limpets will still pick up any fragments with Painite and the unwanted material, but the refinery will ONLY process the Painite in the fragment. This makes it so you only get Painite out of your mining session.

    Why 4 class 1 mining lasers vs. 2 class 2 mining lasers? I've been using 2 class 2 forever. It never occurred to me that perhaps 4 small lasers might be better. I use the other 2 hardpoints for defensive weaponry. With 3x class 5A collector limpet controllers, I get 9 collectors, and the 2 lasers still outpace the limpets. My build is similar except I have a big fuel scoop fitted. I have 256t of cargo available, and I usually buy 175 limpets before embarking on a session. Most times, if the RNG is smiling on me, that's too many limpets. If I jump into a place where the pickings are thin, then it's not enough and I usually turn in when they run out. If a session is really good, I fill up the cargo hold as well as all the bins in the refinery. Another pro tip: If you do head to a system with a full cargo hold and refinery, sell 10 painite units first, let the refinery dump its contents into the cargo hold, then sell the remaining amount. If you sell the 500t of painite, it will impact the sell price, sometimes dramatically. Your last 10 units will be discounted. Conversely, selling the 10 initially won't impact the sell price, so you can get full sale price for everything.

      @@josa310 Ah, thanks a bunch. I don't have mining lances ( not much of a power play enthusiast ) Makes perfect sense. Do you know if anyone has any empirical data regarding the 4x class 1 vs. 2x class 2 mining lasers? A very, very long time ago, I did a 2x class 1 vs. 1x class 2 by equipping them on a python in different groups and timing the yield. It was close in time, and I didn't try checking power draw, or make any special note of heat buildup. Truthfully, I wouldn't change to 4x class 1 mining lasers though because I need some defensive weaponry, you know, in case of pirates. I know the mining lances have some defensive capability, but I can't imagine landing any shots on a viper while trying to swing around a cutter or anaconda. its tough enough keeping turrets on them.

      @josa310 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@therealstubot I'm not aware of any empiracal data regarding what you ask.
      I personaly use 2x class 2 mining lasers , which i find adequate with 7/9 collector limpets, ( i use type 10 and type 9 for mining ) so i can use the remaining hard points for defensive weaponry
      what i know for sure is that 4x class 1 mining lasers use more power than 2x class 2 mining lasers

    • @davidentz7440
      @davidentz7440 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@therealstubot Although I prefer void opal mining I did build a Type-9 for painite and gave it a try. I used 2 mining lancers only and had 6 collector limpets. The mining lancers ripped the asteroid faster than the collectors could collect the minerals. Also I only needed 2 pips in each system. The weapons one never lost more than 3 bars by the time the asteroid was empty. Also no need for defense because pirates only appear if
      1. You first drop into a system (so don't start mining till they go away).
      2. Restart a new instance or start of a session in the rings
      3. someone else joins your instance.
      as long as you avoid those things you will never need weapons
      I also avoid pirates when traveling to a system to sell the painite, by charging my fsd as soon as I see a pirate, even while fuel scooping. They can't get to you quick enough, and rather take some internal heat damage than loose the ship during an interdiction.

      @@davidentz7440 I'm not very good at the new mining style. I've tried a few times, but never have successfully gotten a subsurface deposit, or cracked an asteroid open. I make plenty of money doing old style mining, so i'm not that concerned about learning it.
      Even fully loaded in my anaconda or cutter, I can evade interdiction about 95% of the time. My tactic when interdicted in the cutter is run, it's silly fast so I can usually get distance and wake out before losing the shield. In the anaconda, I fight. Its too slow to run, and it's tanky enough to put up with a lot of abuse. Its also armed to the teeth. The majority of the time, pilots that interdict are at least deadly ranked and in a Chieftan, FDL or better.
      A very common scenario I encounter is I jump into a ring, mine for a while and get next to nothing, like 5t. I stow gear and go to another part of the ring. As you mentioned, of course, when you enter the ring, you get a pirate or two ( although not always, sometimes you'll get another miner ). With a few tons of product in the hold, they attack, and in that case, I always fight them. I would much rather lose my ship and cargo than be extorted like that. Most of the time, the pirates you encounter in ring outside of the resource extraction sites are low level, flying small class ships, so not a big deal. Rarely are they badass opponents. But sometimes you'll get a dangerous ranked pilot in a python and that can be a fight.
      But even my exploration ship has weapons, a shield, and point defense. I got ganked early in my elite days coming back from a 30kly exploration run by a pair of sidewinders. Lost a month's worth of data within 100ls from the station. I'm not going down without a fight.

There is just no cross-play, if you play open you'll only meet other Xbox commanders. So the answers is yes if it's there for PC players then it will be there for xbox & ps4 players.

    For you guys that don't play all that one session.. how do you deal with pirates in a Type-9 man, because I like to use 3 mining lasers so should I get rid of one?
    Even with good engineering it just feels like it's made out of paper..I would take breaks while I'm mining but then I worry about coming back to pirates..at least with Void Opals I can take the Corvette.
    People recommend the Type 9 but how do you fend off pirates because it's too slow to run even with G5 Dirty Drives and Drag Drives.. if you take mining lasers it sucks trying to defend itself.. it's probably the only ship I question actually purchasing.
    Money is not an issue for me in ED but still..for a decently expensive ship I can't find a good use for it, I want to use it for this but it sucks defending itself.

    • @davidentz7440
      @davidentz7440 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      no need for defense because pirates only appear if
      1. You first drop into a system (so don't start mining till they go away).
      2. Restart a new instance or start of a new (log off then log back on hours/days later) session in the rings
      3. someone else joins your instance.
      as long as you avoid those things you will never need weapons
      I also avoid pirates when traveling to a system to sell the painite, by charging my fsd as soon as I see a pirate, even while fuel scooping. They can't get to you quick enough, and rather take some internal heat damage than loose the ship during an interdiction.
      Personally I prefer void opal mining and use a clipper for that. Although It does have 2 large multi-canons and 620m/s boost as defense I never really need it. Though sometimes I do kill the pirates just for fun :)
