"Don't have someting targeted when launching your limpets..."
That's why some of my limpets have almost no lifespan while others last a ling time. Thanks for the info.

I know you wrote this two months ago but thought I'd mention that sometimes they get stuck on a big chunk... like there's an opal clipped inside it can't get. Helps if you have the controller that runs 3 limpets at once so the other two can be actively gathering while the other makes love to the asteroid.

Advantage of a medium ship like python, you can land at the small station which may be closer offering a premium price.

    • @SepulcherGeist
      @SepulcherGeist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I love medium ships for almost all things for that reason, and no one will ever question showing up in a Python for any task. If I were to pick the best everything ship in the game, Python would be the first word on my lips. And yes, medium landing pad access can help. However, I just never needed to use one for mining. I've never been in the situation with a large mining ship where I didn't have a very near-by large station to buy at top price. If I ever do find that to becoming an issue, however, I'd strongly consider changing ships to a Python.

Very good job on the guide.
I would like to add some addional helping tips.
    1. Cores will almost always have a black mesh covering them, and 100% indication that it's a core is if parts of it turns very dark green color on the scanner.
    2. Realese limpets initially to gather original fragments that are released. Void opal fragments detiriorate over time and will disapier once they run out of hull percentage that you see when targeting them. If you shoot them off and gather them later innital ones can disapier, especially if you are running little amount of collectors or take long to shoot off the attached ones.
    3. Run high strength shields as your regen rate doesn't matter, if your shields run out just reboot the ship and you will get 50% back imidiately. Remain will recharge over time while looking for the next core.
Personally I mined with Krait Mk. 2 and was satisfied with it. Now I have upgraded to Anakonda and surely will stick with it. It can be tricky at times to get in middle of the asteroids, however that's pretty rare. Conda gives you safety due to its large shields and amazing hull. Also due to very large amount of optional compartments you can run more collectors and have a very good fuel scoop for longer travels to sell your opals. I have 256 tones of cargo space and I can fill them up in around 4-5 hours, which results in 400+ mil per run.
Konda also has a lot of hard points and you can keep guns for defence on L and H hard points. So pirates are really not a problem in case you get interdiceted.
Hope this helps out, and good luck mining!

Perhaps my favorite part of Elite Dangerous is that there are always a ton of sleeper viable options. You can almost do anything you want with decent success in nearly any ship if you try. My favorite ship is the Krait mk2 in general, but I use it for so much else that I enjoy mining in something different.

      @Paladin1034 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@solidus3168 Anaconda is going to be a good mining ship, the only tricky bit might be hitting the fissures in time since the conda is a literal yacht and can be a bit difficult to maneuver around an asteroid. Otherwise, you've got plenty of module space for mining plus survivability, plenty of hard points for combat, and a good jump range.

Though void opals deep core mining is now routine for me, I still enjoy watching guides like this, which I compliment you for.
If I may, I would like to share a further bit of "folklore" to re-mark and integrate with it:
    1) the perfect shape for the asteroid is that of the "rosetta" bread we have in Rome, Italy. Just google image "rosetta pane" (with "rosetta bread" you could get less relevant results) and enjoy your deep core asteroid made bread :-)
    2) Always remember the right asteroid comes with three things: shape, colour and fissures. Because of this, turning on the night vision is almost mandatory, because it lets you know instantly wether the asteroid has fissures (that "ostrich-ish" symbol you very clearly show in the video at 6:35) or not. As you say, if the asteroid has the right shape and colour BUT shows no fissures, don't waste half a limpet or a second more of your time on it, and just go on searching.
    3) One thing I haven't put to test yet is the position of the fissures on the asteroid as an indicator for the mineral type. I suspect that it could be relevant, e.g. "if there's a fissure on the top central pinnacle of the 'rosetta' then it's void opals rather than alexandrite (or the other way-round)" etc.
I'm gonna have to test it seriously, eventually.
See you all in the black and, again, great vid
    #Sepulcher Geist!

This guide is so much better than every single other Void Opal mining guides out there. Firstly with the color and shape trick when pulsing, then the tip about not targeting individual units when launching collector limpets. I was thinking surely something must be broken with my limpets. I wasted a whole day trying to follow those other guides and a few cargo hold full of limpets.

  • @adrian3482
    @adrian3482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    A few tips
    1. Hold down the fire button on your pulse wave scanner. Doing this will reveal the core of asteroids. An asteroid with a core will appear green with black marks on it.
    2. Two maximum strength seismic charges in two low strength fissures will almost always give optimal yield strength. Sometimes you will be just below optimal but never above it. This will save you charges. I cringed a bit watching him fire 10 charges at a single asteroid.
    3. Give the asteroid 30 seconds or so to "open" after cracking or you will lose limpets.
    4. I've mined opals with four different ships including the clipper and the cutter and have never once had an issue with damage to the ship. I've never been 'stuck' as he put it. I wouldn't have mentioned it at all but he spent a solid two minutes talking about it putting the fear in people. Don't worry about it - just don't be a moron.
    5. You only need one abrasion blaster. There was a time when having multiple abrasion blasters with close convergence yielded more void opals but this has been patched.
    6. If you want to make some real money disregard this video entirely and take up double painite hotspot mining. It's much faster and far easier, freeing up your focus to watch Netflix. Plenty of guides here on youtube.

Worth noting that you can tell from the scanner where the clusters of opals are when you see your limpits heading towards a cluster rotate your nose towards the cluster if there is rock between you and the opals you can redirect your incoming limpets manually by vertical thrusting the limpets will radically match your new vector and can often cause them to dodge the rock in the same vertical direction as your thrust. horizontal thrusting works too but vertical thrusting is more effective due to the limpets gunning for your belly not your center mass.

    1) You can use INARA to search for a place to sell the void opals. Look for the highest paying ones, INARA also lists the distance from your reference system and it's easy to find the nearest one (since there aren't that many stations that pay 1.6 million).
    2) At least nowadays, if you abandon the surplus limpets (instead of jettison them) they won't be collected anymore, so there is no need to put them on the ignore list manually.

Maybe late to the party but the tip about the closer-to-spherical trend in the shape of core asteroids really helped. After hearing that and looking at my scans, I select a particular asteroid in the distance with only faint yellow on it. Not too jaggy and closer to a sphere than an oval, I approach while scanning and it looks yellower and yellower. Prospector reports back - it's a void opal core asteroid. Thank you!

Great GREAT explanation for the shape of the core asteroids. I've just started really getting into core mining, and in about 3 days of mining have found 6 cores. Lame I know. lol. However, I was also popping limpets like crazy on bigger bright rocks, to the point where I would have to leave and restock limpets. This explains it so clearly. I saw a comment on one of your other videos where someone explained it like popcorn. My problem is, I keep overcharging my explosions. I don't know why, because I will have one solid blue line, and then some in the 2nd blue line, and it will read optimal. Nothing red at all. But, once the explosion happens, I get a red notice that says something like over optimal and that I have lost resources. Anyone experienced that? Great videos Geist!!

I like to throw on the night vision when I'm doing the ice ring. The core asteroids when you have your night vision on and you're hitting them with the pulse wave, they turn from yellow and red, to black and green color and then back to the blue color before going yellow and red then black and green again. Also, as the core asteroid is changing colors you will notice the asteroid glimmering underneath the color. Nine times out of 10 these are void opal core asteroids.

Flying around astroid field at 520 m/s (dirty drive engineering) makes scanning for cores a breeze. 96t cargo which is perfect for a single gaming session. Big jump range to traverse bubble when getting goods to market. Manoeuvrable enough to fight interdictions. It is the perfect core mining ship IMHO.

Another tip. The ones that have stuff in them are usually arranged in a triangle pattern. If you have two of them check at the point near them that makes an equilateral triangle. There is a good chance there will be one there. There seems to be some density formula. The only problems Is, I think, if someone mined one, even in solo from another game, I think it will be missing.
To be fair the alexandrite is more rounded. I think if there is a modeling issue it's a range based on value. So, I think the lower ones that aren't voids may be lower where the collection of stuff in the higher price tier potential are a different shape. Or have more subtle differences.
I think I saw some lower end resources in a longer bigger asteroid once. It may have been in a different type of belt. I think metal or something instead of ice.

And BTW, the trick to cutters is that they are very maneuverable. The problem is that their acceleration is crap. Once that is moving they are about as good as it gets. Or at least as good as you need for mining.
Although the timings can be tight. But if you are used to finding stuff fast it's not an issue. You have enough time for a few mistakes even if the worst scenario.

You can also hit one of the large slabes and mine off some of the materials after you break the rock apart. Sometimes it will get a few more Opals.

Worth noting that the demand will affect the sell price, in general only go somewhere that has 10x the amount of demand than you have in your hold. Otherwise a “bulk selling tax” is applied. I know the author will know this but this video is still coming up in my recommended and I’m a new player, only got the game last week.

I already mind void opals. Still you added further valuable information. I probably swap my Anaconda with the Clipper. The best info however was, I thought I can only sell to a station that has an equal or higher demand of void opals than what I carry. You soled all your VO in a station with only 2 demand! That was great news. Now I can sell mine at 1.6 Mill as well.

I’m using a python for core mining. It’s a bit slow and less maneuverable, but I can swing around the outside of a busted up asteroid fairly easily using the ascent/descent controls. All the hard points are also fairly centralized making aiming easier.
This video certainly reinforces my own experiences. I’ve had a hard time finding core asteroids in void opal hotspots on occasion. So this was definitely helpful.

I'd like to follow up my comment from yesterday with this - yesterday I've had an Eagle, about 500k credits and was about to give up on the game (again) for being so grindy.
I've sold the Eagle, scraped my cash together and bought an Adder, setup for core mining (no Suface scanner because no module slots). I entered an icy ring, pinged and flew around. After about 10 minutes I found an asteroid with those fissures on the surface. Prospector limpet and it's got a void opal core. I've cracked it (that sound is so much more satisfying in person than in a video). I#ve flown home, sold them for 13x1.6m or such...
I'm now in an ASP Explorer, I've only not A rated it because I haven't flown to a station that sells the 5A shields and I've still got a lot more money in the bank than I've ever had in Elite. That Python and Anaconda now look very much reachable instead of undoable. So thanks again :)

Get a Krait MK2. It is the perfect mining ship. You can put you seismic charge launcher & abrasion blaster on the two medium slots, and you still have 3 large hard points for weapons. You can also either take a fighter (96 cargo slots) to help with pirates or an extra 32 cargo bay. Tbh, I take the fighter because I hate running from a fight and usually don’t have the time or patience to farm that long in one go to fill 128 cargo bays. It is a slick ship that has the best hardpoint locations and its low profile design makes it stupid easy to get into tight spaces.

You want a nimble ship? I DO IT IN A TYPE-9! There is no less-nimble ship.
I also don't mine void opals, I mine Low temperature diamonds. They can exist as a core, but also just a standard mining resource, and can sell for over a million too. So I use a pair of mining beams, abrasion blaster, and a seismic charge launcher, so I can, and do, mine core asteroids, but also just mine other rocks with LTDs in.
Anyway, Type 9, 512 cargo space, doesn't matter if you go normal mining and get the odd "wrong" resource, you're unlikely to fill it in any comfortable run time, and if you do, just eject the junk. If not, just sell the junk for a little bonus cash.
A good alternate mining ship is the Python, it's size M, and can have a lot of cargo space with all the gear.
Also, EDDB, scroll down, lists stations buying void opals, or in my case LTDs, from best price, then look to see how far that is from you.

You need to hold the button for the second pulse and keep it pressed all the time (on PC. Don't know about others) First pulse is always the same but the second pulse is what shows you if asteroid has a core. If you let the pulse button go you cannot see the "core" indication. It looks like black squares and the whole asteroid needs to be "black". Not just a thin layer of squares. A LOT OF THEM. You will definitely know when you see the one with core.

I use an Anaconda for mining. The two class 3 hard points on top work well with gimballed beam lasers for the NPC’s with parrots and wooden legs. I always target the low strength fissures first. 2x Full power torpedoes in low strength fissures is normally all it takes to open the asteroid. EDDB is okay to use, but INARA is much better.

    • @Paladin1034

I’ve used a Cutter and it’s fine if you learn how to fly it, the reason that I still fly it after obtaining around half a billion credits is because of the cargo space, I can carry 300 limpits and have many more spaces for void opals. I can spend my limpits like candy and still have many more after my journey. The handling on the Cutter is terrible but after a couple of asteroids, I do just fine.

Great insight. Just one question though: why not check out the surface deposits before blowing up the asteroids? Sometimes, they are interesting (such as low temperature diamonds in LTD sites). It's always a little more to scrub around ;-)
And one last thing: as we can see on your video, watching the exact hour when you blow up asteroids, in general there's a 10-15 minute gap which I would think is the "hunting game" (looking for core asteroids). This is the longest part of deep core mining, in my experience. Having more or less collector limpets has a very low impact on the overall time required to totally fill your cargo. 15' looking, 1 minute setting the charges, and 3 collecting the goods. It's, very roughly a 20 minute cycle. The bulk of it is finding the asteroid. I found ONE thing only to make it quicker, and have an overall relevant impact on the time it takes to fill your cargo: a very open canopy! something like a Krait really helps, Python is bad, Anaconda terrible, and I would think Clippers and cutters just as bad. Too bad a Type-9 cannot fit between the rocks... But really, having a clear field of view, in my experience, really helps not miss the "glowing pumpkins" (you know what I mean). And that is the most efficient way to reduce the time it takes to fill my ship. Any thoughts?

The Python is far more agile than the Clipper for getting around rocks, and the Python has the highest cargo capacity of any ship that can land anywhere because it uses a medium landing pad.
Gutamaya ships have slow up/down/side thrusters, so the Clipper is not the best ship. Since it needs a large landing pad, you might as well get an Anaconda.

From what I've seen, so long as you stay in the blue zone only, you get optimal yield. I have had difficulty getting it completely in the blue with just two highs in low fissures; I normally have to drop a low in an average to edge it up there.
