Just some detailing: 1) LANCIA was effectively shut down by FIAT in favor of ALFA ROMEO during the early '90s, when the company decided to pursue a different brand image through racing ALFA ROMEO at the DTM, which still had a FWD but was based on a much more "sellable" platform, the Alfa Romeo 155, which was a front wheeling car on the market 2) LANCIA kept on producing low volumes car for police forces and, mainly, key figures of the Italian government 3) "Ypsilon" is the italian spelling of the letter "Y". At the time of the launch back in 2003 it was some sort of a breakout car among young females, and has been kept alive through 2020's basically just for the italian market LANCIA, as well as ALFA ROMEO, are just proof of the very short sighted management performed by the FIAT group. God bless Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo for saving FERRARI, otherwise it would have ended in the same bad fashion of these 2 once glorious brands
Thank you for this insight: the fact that you know more about Lancia's racing pedigree than actual Italians like myself (yes, I admit it 😅) speaks volumes about your passion for motor sports! 🙏🇮🇹
TG's efforts to explain about Saab also hits deep. Knowing someone who has a Saab 9-3 Viggin and prior to that a gen 1 900, Saabs were a riot of a little car. Sad to see them gone right now and suffering the same fate as Lancia where overengineering things killed themselves.
Dear Josh great ,great work BUUUT the Delta S4 was the replacement for the 037 in Group B after 1984 , the S4 raced in the 1985 and 86 seasons and in the latter a fatal accident occured to the Delta S4 driven By Henri Toivonen with Sergio Cresto at the Tour de Corse Rally stage , Balestre decided to cut off Group B in favor of Group A. So Lancia entered the Delta 4wd , then all the later models that ended with the almighty Delta Integrale of the early 90s ! :)

Lovely video, Josh! Some stuff that you got wrong about "Warthog" Ascari's demise: He died riding a Ferrari 750 Monza Sporstcar, not a D50. You might got confused with the crash he had during the Monaco GP, where he went to the bottom of the Mediterrenian Sea with his car! Three days later, he was in Monza and got his fatal crash. In fact, he wasn't suppose to be there. They thought he would rest after that crash, but as he only suffered some bruises, he was in Monza watching Eugenio Castelotti driving that car. At lunchtime, he asked Ferrari to let him driving the car, he spun out and the car fell over him. The Variante Ascari was named, not only at his honor, but because it's the place of his fatal crash.
The S4 was a Group B car and released in 85 or 86. In 87, the Group B class was killed and WRC moved to Group A regulations thus making Lancia build the Delta Integrale which gave Lancia many wins in WRC.
Gotta love Jeremy, Hammond, and May those trio are legendary in the automobile community. Also while Lancia is down on the very bottom they still left behind a history with them
One slight mistake that I thought I should mention was that the Delta S4 ran on the RAC rally in 1985 and 1986 and then Group A took over from Group B in 87' but apart from that a brilliant video as usual Josh!
Really nice topic not about a driver but a brand, i liked it. Should you do this again, i would love to see it about Opel, another car maker that once stood on the top steps.
The actual Ypsilon is the Lancia Ypsilon of 12 years ago but with some new details in the interiors or in the look and of course the FIAT 500 engines. It sells a lot beacuse is good in town and because italian car culture is dead with the 2008 crisis where italian governement decided to increase the numeber and price cars taxes (that's why in Italy cars costs more of the cars in many european states or othe states in the world) sports cars and luxury cars were penalizated and many people stopped buying new cars. FIAT tried to bring back Lancia as a european Chrysler seller failing (they renamend the 300 as Thema, the Thema was a luxury sedan with a Ferrari engine), if someone want to task me why FIAT did that.the answer os that FIAT always has bad commercial idea.

awesome video, would be great if Lancia could go back to rallying. A fun Lancia related fact is that Inspector Morse drove one in the books despite being more famous for driving red MK2 Jaguar in the TV films
0:32 finally! That’s the correct pronunciation, thank you! 👍🏻
I always love how Clarkson, Hammond and May do a history on either famous car manufactures, racing rivalries or even racing drivers (Jim Clark or Ayrton Senna). They are so good to watch.
I like this!! Not just history and random jokes about racing drivers, but cars themselves now!! The channel has come a long way, and it's so great to see ^^. Keep it up Josh
The ‘83 WRC season is one of the best motorsports stories of all time! Looking forward to the video
Just some detailing:
1) LANCIA was effectively shut down by FIAT in favor of ALFA ROMEO during the early '90s, when the company decided to pursue a different brand image through racing ALFA ROMEO at the DTM, which still had a FWD but was based on a much more "sellable" platform, the Alfa Romeo 155, which was a front wheeling car on the market
2) LANCIA kept on producing low volumes car for police forces and, mainly, key figures of the Italian government
3) "Ypsilon" is the italian spelling of the letter "Y". At the time of the launch back in 2003 it was some sort of a breakout car among young females, and has been kept alive through 2020's basically just for the italian market
LANCIA, as well as ALFA ROMEO, are just proof of the very short sighted management performed by the FIAT group.
God bless Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo for saving FERRARI, otherwise it would have ended in the same bad fashion of these 2 once glorious brands
Great vid. Thanks Josh 😁
yes YES i was waiting for top gear and you opened with it and now my day is made
That rusty soviet steel did a real number on the Italian car industry.
The fact Josh used past tense when addressing top gear says a lot
I really enjoyed this video. I had no idea about Lancia’s history. You should do more videos on auto history!! 🏎
Jesus man, your video quality has skyrocketed since I started watching you, keep it going.
As an italian, I'm crying spaghetti... more or less since FIAT bought, you know, something like every car manufacturer in Italy. So, I started crying far too soon before even been born.
Damn you, FIAT.
Fiat are like Volkswagen but poor and not rich everytime they buy a car making companythey ruin it unlike Volkswagen who everytime they buy a car making company they make it better and powerful
@@Darko_Milosevski03 sad but true
Lovely video, Josh!
Some stuff that you got wrong about "Warthog" Ascari's demise:
He died riding a Ferrari 750 Monza Sporstcar, not a D50.
F1 now the history of a car brand
Gotta love Jeremy, Hammond, and May those trio are legendary in the automobile community. Also while Lancia is down on the very bottom they still left behind a history with them
the lancia story by clarkson is some of the best story telling i’ve heard
"when the world cup was over"
Oh you're a dark little anzac aint ya xD
They never won with the Delta S4 they won with the delta Integrale, Delta S4 was a Group B car
They won races with the S4. Just not a championship.
@@davids2361 Yeah my bad, should have specified that
One slight mistake that I thought I should mention was that the Delta S4 ran on the RAC rally in 1985 and 1986 and then Group A took over from Group B in 87' but apart from that a brilliant video as usual Josh!
@ 6:40 that's Markku Alén
Lancia delta is our family car and so i feel somewhat honoured wity this video
Really nice topic not about a driver but a brand, i liked it. Should you do this again, i would love to see it about Opel, another car maker that once stood on the top steps.
One of my buddies drives a Lancia Delta in matte black. And honestly, it's a sexy car and drives very nice.
I love Lancia and I really hope the new owners bring them back from just making the Ypsilon. This was a pretty awesome video, Josh! Good job!
It looks you are from Italy...one question..Why Fiat doesn't makes Punto any more?
@@maxster10 Because they are planning to make a new one with an EV version based on a Peugeot platform. The last Punto was produced from 2006 to 2018.
Good news! They're reentering the WRC in the Rally4 Class with the new Lancia Ypsilon HF!
Video Ideas:
1 Could F1 Race At Le Mans
2 Could F1 return to the old hockenheimring
3 WTF Happened to Mercedes
4 Wtf happened to Renault in 2007-2018 not lotus
5 Could F1 return to Jerez
1. No(Le Mans is a Grade 2 circuit)
2. No(the old layout is physically impossible to rebuild)
5. It depends on promoters
Uploaded right after i saw the kimera at goodwood
The first 30 seconds are pure gold
mega love for your content bra ...... and all the way from Eswatini i say keep it up!!!
This was great!, but I'm still waiting for ranking of 1990s Drivers!
The Grand Tour's Lancia vs Audi documentary was sooo brilliant.
Also... I'd honestly kill for a Lancia 037
i want more of these type of videos, luckily many car companies have gone bust in the last 50 years
Would love more car videos like this
Josh needs 1 mil by the end of the year
Replace subtopewdiepie with subtojoshrevell
Do more rally please rally and f1 are my two favorite automotive sports and you make really good videos so I have no doubt that
Holy crap, been waiting for this for a long time.
I like how you mentioned the old top gear 😄
Surely do a 'What happened to Holden' video for the lads down under
I never heard of Lancia before the dirt rally but when I bought that delta S4, everything about rallying just clicked.
0:32 Yes man, it's correct!
Cheers from Italy🇮🇹
Ascari died whilst testing a Ferrari sports car, not the Lancia D50.
Imagine if Lancia decided to enter Extreme E.
Lancia's history will ALWAYS ...ALWAYS... be Magical. btw.. a genuine Stratos (as I saw one at the gates of Spa) running casually, sounds jaw dropping!
My dad asks this as he uploaded this I am litteraly amazed!
