Indeed, the architecture of the work speaks for itself, especially in this exquisite performance. No need for bombast to pound it home. Leave that to Mahler.
The composer of "The Well-Tempered Clavier" never wrote an "overpowering bass" line. Certain listeners might under-appreciate such a musical voice in the Bass Clef, however.
This is so far the most articulate expression of Bach's fugue in g minor I feel I have heard. So much going on in any of Bach's work but often musicians sound as if they are battling instead of dancing in their heart playing this music. Thank you for your dedication to this excellent performance. You have brought out the magnificent nuances which often are muddy and lost in so many other performances of this music.
Eleganter Vortrag von dieser schönen Fuge, und in Puncto Artikulation und Tempo fein abgestimmt auf die große Akustik in der Bovenkerk. So muss das sein! Danke sehr!
What a beautiful performance of this magnificent piece. I love that you can follow each voice at all times and yet hear how they blend to form the harmonies and meta-themes. It is the perfect performance for learning about this music, which is what I did (I’ve listened a dozen or more times, mostly with sheet music in hand). Beyond that, this performance shows the dark grandeur that most organists bring out yet goes beyond and shows Bach’s pure joy that some interpretations miss. Bravo.
Sans doute l'interprétation de la BWV 578 que je préfère avec ce tempo un peu plus lent que d'usage qui permet de remplir tout l'espace sans le saturer. Merci beaucoup.
Thank you NBS!! Fugues are such a natural musical expression to me; they're supposedly constructed under strict rules but always sound so natural... I guess when done well everything is...
I see what you’re saying. I think that an expression of brilliant creativity under the constraints of a rigid rule system is something only true artists are capable of. Bach is a perfect example, as is the organist in this video.
This one of first Bach pieces most organists learn. It has a great deal of power and helps in development of playing skills. Despite being one of the Little preludes and fuges it has great power and this interpretation lifts it to heights
The first time i heard this fugue while playing piano tiles😁, however, it stuck in my mind and the melody of it kept repeated over and over again. Beside that, i was listening it in different variations, BUT, this one is absolutely incredible and amazing;) 👌👌👌👌👌
Wonderful clarity, elegant, lively and light, yet not lacking the ‘sternness’ of the key. (Or sombre yet with a distinct ‘lightness’.) Solid yet pliable, the music breathes, something I often miss. My favourite version.
Meraviglioso.
@@bpowell875 I'm sure this is true, but if one doesn't have a name, title, or reference number...only a tune they heard decades ago, it can be a little difficult to pick out. :)
@@westsidebilling Can't exactly google the lyrics haha. On the other hand, if you know it's baroque and especially if you can remember the main theme, you could likely just ask a musician if you have one to hand. If they don't know it, someone they know will.

Imagine how skilled of a sight reader she is, on top of the fact that she must have spent years mastering an instrument that is contained in a cathedral.
These trio sonatas are so wonderfully written. Looks like a quadropedmanal sonata, [innovative use of latin & roots??] since she uses all 4 limbs to play. Takes a lot of skill but if you look carefully at the feet, you can see they are playing one line of music together, in quick succession, alternately playing each succeeding note. So Trio is right! A good thing it's quite short, but the organist must feel like she's done a 100 meter sprint! Or the equivalent of a much longer piece just written for 2 hands. Even the feet have to play quickly, not so easy when the hand parts are even more complex, the eyes can monitor the hands, but the feet play by instinct... further from the eyes. So well done Dorien, but even more well done BAch, but then he just rolls his eyes & says 'soli Deo gloria! Bach have mercy on the organist's brain!^^
Again, I am absolutely astonisht to see all this incredible information, and yet the man who built this instrument (the best part of this video) is not listed! Desperate for some satisfaction on this score, I'll hazard a desperate guess : Arp Schnitger?
Dorien begrijpt wat fraseren is. Doerien begrijpt wat een mooi touché is. Dorien begrijpt wat registreren is, en wat articuleren inhoudt. Mooie minimale agogische verhoudingen. Het orgel ademt,, zoals het hoort.
I dont know what some people feel or enjoy so much while listing to Bach's music. I just fell hypnotized, when something start to make sense.
So many things to appreciate about this performance.Tempo. Single rank of keys. No overpowering bass. Marvelous!
Bach wrote the FAT bass part for a reason. I want it to be shaking the building!

When you know you're going to be happy just by the way the fugue subject is articulated. Beautiful, thank you.

It's called "Picardy third" :) really beautiful!

@@TheBony45yes. A picardy third is very common in baroque pieces and in some late renaissance music as well.
This reignited my love for organ music.
Excellent. Controlled and accurate, yet warm and musical.
Nice, comfortable tempo in which one can clearly hear the intricate texture of Bach's counterpoint. Well done.
Bach requires a lot of energy from the musician then gives them back the ecstatic feelings of joy in the end 😮

@@worldasitis thank you. I corrected my typo.
Believe me, one has to battle with Bach, before dancing in your heart with the music becomes an option. 😂
It’s hard to be easy.
As a church organist this is an amazing performance. Quite simply flawless. Thank You.
As someone who doesn't play the organ or go to church -- I'm not Christian -- I really liked this too.
The most amazing performance of this piece I have ever heard
The standard of the Dutch classic music performers is formidable, not least those associated with the Netherlands Bach Society.
One of my very favorite short compositions by the Master. I like the tempo!
It is so wonderful what this Netherland Bach Society does here. Many thanks. And excellent organist Dorien Schouten, to be followed!

Marvelous - I very much enjoyed the tempo of this performance
First heard in "Prayer for the dying" with Mickey Rourke and ever since in love with this music. What an excellent performance. Thank you.
Superb relaxed tempo, phrasing and dynamics! Plus registration, as one would have heard Bach play it one Sunday.

The proof of their naturalness is how easy it is for kids to catch onto "Row, Row, Row your Boat"! A fugue bubbles along seemingly of itself!
This is even one of Bachs "simpler" fugues so to say :) And even this one is still such a great work!
