- The Mass in G minor, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, derives its opening from cantata 102, while the other two choruses and three arias are taken from cantatas 187 and 72. Bach probably wrote this and three other 'Lutheran' masses to create a safe haven for some of his favourite pieces. The neutral character of a Latin Mass means it can be used on far more occasions than the one specific moment in the ecclesiastical year assigned to the cantatas written in German.

I have never heard this before today. The piece is lovely, as are all of J.S. Bach's works.
There are three more delights to discover if you don't know Bach's "Lutheran" masses. The A Major Mass which I personally call the "Pastoral Mass", The F Major Mass with the horns, which I personally call the " Hunting Mass" , and the lovely G Major Mass. I'm hoping that the NBS produces them on You Tube soon maybe as a New Year Gift.

I was thoroughly engaged and enjoyed this piece from beginning to end. It was my first hearing, and it came to its end far to quickly. Fine ensemble and solo work. I suspect that brilliant conductors like Van Veldhoven or Herreweghe have such a gift for influencing musicians that they perform their music from the heart.

I have performed a fair amount of choral music in my life, but regret that I never had the opportunity to learn this magnificent work. How beautifully performed by the orchestra and chorus and soloists. Absolutely beautiful! Thank you maestro Veldhoven.
I so love this group...they seem to effortlessly transmute what Bach probably would have intended more than any others I have heard. Great to see two English soloists there too...music collaboration across national and cultural nuances knows no bounds!
I agree, Nelson. The NBS consistently performs Bach as I think it almost certainly would have sounded when he directed his own works in the 18th century.

This work is just as great as the Mass in B-min. Stylistically, however, it is pure High Baroque without any admixture of stile antico.
Fred: I have been joyusly singing Bach in a great choral society and in church, but have not yet sung his Sanctus. What an incredible Christian composer. What a distinct privilege!

another definitive performance - i am amazed at the technical skill of the singers - the perfectly sized ensemble for a work this intricate. the gloria fugue is incredible, both as music and as performance. Bach is like no other music. Just streams of invention and challenge for the musician, singer and listener alike, constantly shifting harmonies and surprises with a surprising rhythmic drive as well. this would make a convert out of me if i heard music like this every sunday at church!

JS Bach's music always seems to have 1 or 2 extra dimensions. It saddens the heart that he must have known he was a genius but was not generally recognised as such in his life time. And also a huge thumbs up for the lead Oboe player (Stadler I think) who does not get enough credit in my view.
