Dear Heart: you play this magnificently. The organ is a gorgeous instrument. This piece has sentimental value to me. When I was in college (my freshman year), I was friends with a music student who was an organ major. He was gifted - a true musical artist. Many women pursued him (he was gay...) but I never did. We understood each other. He was preparing for a upcoming recital and he invited me to hear him rehearse one evening(he never invited anybody...). He was going to play the Little Fugue as his encore....and he dedicated it to me. He died in the early 2000's. Sharing in loving memory of Leander Chapin Claflin III (Biff).

The organ was restored again in the years 2014/2015. The Flentrop company carried out this work. This mainly concerned a restoration of the old pipework, which had been seriously affected by lead corrosion.

Lovely rendition of one of Bach's most delightful pieces! It's particularly nice to hear it played on a European organ of his time! It's fun to imagine that one could have heard this fugue on this organ, sitting in this church around the years 1703-1707 and it would have sounded almost the same! Thanks to Jonathan for this, and to Tom for the views of this beautiful old church!

the only complaints I heard about old organs was about response after hitting a key and how quick the tone produced. Once spoke to prof organplayer telling me that some organs it lasts 0.2 to 0.3 sec or even more. He said that playing such organs was a psin in the @ss as your fingers are pressing keys but your ears hear something completely else....for some its impossible to play such organs as one can get mixed up completely. He said : just play by heart, dont listen as it will wreck your performance...😉

Absolutely fantastic rendition on one of the world's greatest organs! I've loved this organ ever since I bought a CD back in the '90s of Piet Kee playing it! If only Schnitger had retained the original function of the Pedal 24' Principaal as a 32' rather than reconfiguring it as a much less useful 21-1/3' quint, even if it had to stop at the original low-F if there was no practical way to add 5 additional pipes to complete the newer 1725 pedal range to low-C.

    • @MusicfromStAndrews
      @MusicfromStAndrews 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The Pedal 24' was originally a manual stop beginning on Contra F in Van Hagerbeer's concept of 1645, not a pedal stop. the organ builder Strumphler tried to convert it into a 32' stop in the 1780s but it didn't work and his wooden pipes lie dormant at the bottom of the staircase. The 24' and 12' quints (64' and 32' harmonics) provide an extraordinary richness in homophonic music.

    To David James:
Your original comment about a slowing down of the tempo, just before the entry of the left hand, seems to have disappeared, from my screen, at least.
Perhaps you were picking up on an agogic accent - the last kind mentioned in this quote from Wikepedia?
    >
"There are four kinds of agogic accents :
    .
Longer notated duration of a note, for example, a whole note/semibreve (four beats in common time) among quarter notes/crotchets (each of which gets one beat).
    .
Extended duration of a note within its full-time value (without altering the tempo). For example, players of organ and harpsichord (which do not allow the use of dynamic accents) can emphasize one of a sequence of staccato quarter notes by making it less staccato (that is, making one note longer to emphasize it).
    .
Extended duration of a note with the effect of temporarily slowing down the tempo (rubato or rallentando).
    .
Delayed onset of a note, for example by doing a pause before starting a note."
