I immediately started crying when she did because I understand exactly what she is saying. I have sever L5/S1 disc degeneration, to the point that it is bone on bone. Displaced disc material is pushing on the nerves on both sides, causing severe sciatic pain down both legs. I too was active and enjoyed working out, which I can no longer do, so I know what it is to feel like you are no longer yourself. That said, I am still very apprehensive about this surgery. I have never had surgery of any kind and something this invasive absolutely terrifies me because of everything that can go wrong.

@@user-rx5kr7xr2z A lot has changed since I made that comment. I am now nearly pain free WITHOUT SURGERY. My pain has gone from 9 out of 10 down to 2 or 3 out of 10.
I use an inversion table for 10 min everyday to decompress my spine, I do a lot of stretching and core strengthening exercises everyday, and I also take supplements to help with nerve healing (B Complex, R-lipoic acid, Acetyl-L-carnitine, N-acetyl cysteine, turmeric/curcumin, fish oil. I am amazed at how much these things have reduced my pain. Yes, it is a lot to do, but if you devote just 45-60 min a day to stretching and core strengthening, it absolutely will help...and definitely try the supplements! They really do help and they provide many other health benefits besides just nerve healing.

I am really sorry about it. In fact, I am exactly at the same point, I have never been under any kind of surgery and it terrifies me. So… my neurosurgeon is being patient with me and told me to try some specific movements and exercise… I think he is waiting for me to be ready. I guess for them, that operate on brains and so on, this is just routine… one thing that helps me is thinking about how many people I know has been through a major back surgery and everything went well… may we have the courage and strength to take the best decisions for us wether this means surgery or not (sorry for my English, I am Spanish).

Since then it flares up once or twice a year. I never usually comment but I’ll share my story since when my disc injury happened I turned to TH-cam and found some stories helpful.
I am 35 yr old professional athlete. My injury I believe happened over time. A number of things probably contributed, maybe not getting the right nutrition for the amount of strenuous working out, not warming up or warming down properly, many movements from basketball that tax the body. Two practices a day plus traveling on buses and planes. We lift weights throughout the week as well.
It begins for me (I think) with an SI joint problem, core instability. It caused back pain, I went to therapy and it became better. But then I went into the season again pushing harder for a longer time. The back pain went away and I thought it was getting better. Instead of getting better my back went numb and my legs began to feel weaker. The right leg specifically. So that summer I went to train harder thinking my legs just needed to become stronger. Mistake.
Before the season started, one particular workout I twisted my right knee. I knew it felt off but I couldn’t really feel the pain for the leg was partially numb. I got to my team and was treated for the knee. It started to get better. I was having some inner ankle pain and hip pain maybe for months now as well but thought it was unrelated. (With sports were always banged up so we get treated often). I have seen 3 physiotherapist who diagnosed with piriformis syndrome. (I think some had an idea of a herniated disc but didn’t want to say since the team I played for there are well known).
Anyways fast forward 2 1/2 months on a game day. I felt a pressure in my right leg and could not stand for long. After this day I spent 3 weeks in the bed not being able to care for myself or stand for more than 10 seconds. I had to crawl backward to get to the bathroom and shower on the floor. Miserable. All my teammates came to visit me and give me encouragement but it hurt them to see me this way since I sometimes have a tough persona. I got an mri and was diagnosed with L5 S1 extrusion, and L4-l5 disc bulge.
It’s 6 am I’ll finish the post later today to put some of the questions I wondered for over a year I think I have found some answers to.

Had microdiscectomy on one side of l4-l5 five years ago for heavy sciatica on the left leg and couldn't straighten my back out. Since that time I would have 1-2 flareups a year which usually took about 1-2 months of ibuprofen or prednisone to bring down and then I was fine again. This year I had a flare up and it hasn't gone away but instead is giving me the same symptoms on the opposite side. Even worse pain across my hip and constant pain even when laying down. I developed a DVT clot in my leg that went to my lungs and almost took me out. Its theorized that my reduction in activity due to the back/leg pain may have been a contributing factor. Now that i am on blood thinners I can't take ibuprofen/naproxen and Tylenol is just not cutting it so basically I am stuck in pain. I am guessing they won't do surgery until I get to around the 6 month time from my pulmonary embolism. Going to get a MRI soon and get the ball rolling to see what can be done. Contemplating steroid injections in the back. I get some type of pop in my body now when I walk relating to that side and I am not sure if that is in my hip or in the back. It definitely gives you a shorter trigger point when you are already in pain. Trying to stay positive. Both my father and brother had back issues as well so seems to be hereditary. I am healthy and active otherwise at age 47 but now trying to cut some weight at 237 lbs.

Yup truth. The muscles can handle the weight and will continue to strengthen and grow but the connective tissues (knees, shoulders etc) and especially the spinal discs will wear out and they do NOT regenerate. They are like (adult) teeth. You get one set so take care of em. Avoid heavy lifts.

I had this problem in my l3-l4 disc since 19 I’m 23 now and I’d say it’s not as bad when it was first injured but it’s never Healed and I’m in pain every day I can cough and my back is blown out and it’s at the point I know I need to fix it with surgery I truly don’t care if it’s a small fortune but I refuse to fuse my spine. I did powerlifting around the time sq 500 deadlifting 635 so I know what led to it as well as crushing my L7 at 17y old I was just asking for it but what set my disc into my nerve wasn’t lifting weights but a Pt that could walk. Tried suing the hospital I worked for and the lawyers I had ended up quitting because they wouldn’t get any money and I would get us a free surgery but they only offered me a fusion which at the time my insurance covered anyway so now with covid I’m just overwhelmed with pain and wrong turns every go around.
