Great musician Sunil Santha pioneered the move to set up a musical idiom truly Sri Lankan. He is the father of original Sinhala music. He was the first Sri Lankan to achieve Visharad status both in vocal & instrumental music. The very first songs he came out with in 1946, were also the songs first recorded by Radio Ceylon. These songs, Olu Pipila & Handapane, which had their lyrics written, tunes composed and the actual singing done by Sunil himself, are very popular to this day.
