I love it when y'all point out how terribly written some comics are. It's very real and honest assessment, which I don't think many comic book youtubers do. Keep it up guys.
I was a major marvel nerd back in the 80s. I slavishly bought all of Atlantis Attacks. This series was one of the things that stopped me buying comics. I found your summary painfully accurate and I laughed my arse off. Bravo lads. Keep em coming!
The intro song to every comic pop back issues makes me feel like i should watch it with a monocle, top hat, and a cane that is within a reachable distance
At the end of Secret Wars II, the Earth is being torn apart - The Molecule Man and Silver Surfer pull the Earth back together. It was one of the most vivid memories of my comic book reading youth. The Surfer's power is awesome. Also - great video; very entertaining!
“Evolutionary War, we will never do that one” -Sal Almost a decade later, guardians of the galaxy 3 made Sal break his vow! Love you guys lol always enjoy the old back issues.
OMG! I love watching you guys go over terrible stories like this on Back Issues! It's often more entertaining than discussion on good or iconic comics! Lol These are always a wonderful window into the social and creative moods of the era in which they were written! I.E. "Great scott, I hope I don't hurt these fragile lady heroes too badly!" lmao! As always you do a fascinating job celebrating comics history, for better or worse! Also I can't believe Miss Thing (Thang if you're nasty!) was an actual thing! (Pun intended!) Aww... the 80s and 90s! As always, keep up the great work!
Bless you all for reviewing this story. I remember getting a few Spider-Man annuals that crossed over with it back when it came out and was VERY confused. I think the AMS annual had the Abomination in it for some reason. Now I know it wasn't worth reading up on. The only reasons I have any knowledge of this story and Evolutionary Wars was the "What If?" comics that came out about them.
"Namor? _You're_ leading the Atlanteans now? I thought Attuma was their leader." *Namor:* "IT'S NOT ATTUMA! It's not Attuma. Not anymore." It's the same way with me. Sal also drew that parallel during the 20K Special.
Atlantis Attacks was an important hallmark in my comic reading history. For twas when Atlantis Attacked that I realized I didnt necessarily have to read every issue of my favorite comic.
Coming back, this was really an episode I was thankful of the knowledge Marvel Ultimate Alliance bestowed upon young lil' me. I clapped, I clapped when I saw Attuma in the book
amazing, I didnt know how non sensical the original story was. I think I heard this event referenced once in the avengers assemble cartoon. well it was the first time I heard of attuma and he invaded new york in the first season and then later he would look for the serpent crown.
5 years late and I'm pretty sure I already said this once, but a Wizard from Conan was also a major villain in an X-Men story arc where he trapped Manhattan in a time bubble or something I don't remember. I also don't know if he was the same one from the movie. Kulan Gath was his name I believe.
The eternals origin doesn't say they were creating to protect the earth, it just says that they were created with the deviants as an experiment and protected humans from deviants.
Set is an actual Egyptian god of evil that sounds like it took character traits from another Egyptian God Apophis who is a giant snake destined to eat the Sun and destroy the world.
I read the "what if" story about this event...man, it was really weird...everybody dies (good and bad guys), but everyone ends up as snake people at the end, i think...
The omnibus is a reprint of each issue as was originally. It was the story then a few independent stories origins etc And a few issues were side stories independent and interconnected not necessary for the main story
one issue ruined the momentum, black vortex did that for captain marvel, actually stopped reading because they literally sold me a random book without any warning that had nthing to do with the main story and was totally out of context for everything.
Since you have so many people including myself wanting you to do ultimate spider-man and since it has a lot of volumes Do you think it will take over ever ten episodes after you run out of crisis.
This is my favorite back issues, if I ever make the terrible decision to buy Atlantis Attacks, I hope to get a signature from each of the comic pop guys/gal!!
Jake Stanley It is based off of an old theory that they found Lemur fossils in both Africa and Asia (I think Asia at least) so some guy thought that there must have been a landmass bridging them once and named that landmass Lemuria; he also decided that it sank into the ocean. That theory happened somewhere between 1700 and mid-1900s. Though it is now disproved some people still think it exists, so I guess mythical?
Hi I don't mean to bother you but are you ever planning to do a Moon Knight story? He's the character that got me into comics in general and my favourite to this day and I'm wondering what all your thoughts are on any of his story arcs.
Didn't Galactus try to eat the Earth to kill the baby Celestial before it hatched..? The Eternals' purpose is to protect the baby, I think. Also, the Eternals are a Patheon of "Gods" much like the Asgardians, so they're not overly powerful. This is why I don't understand people who think Thanos is more powerful than Thor. Sure, with the Infinity Gauntlet Thor has no hope, but without it Thanos has been beaten into submission by Thor twice that I can remember. Let's be honest, Thanos wouldn't stand a chance against Odin.
isn't set in actual mythology the Egyptian god of evil? where'd the conan shit come from? marvel was pretty good at keeping the mythology basis till this.
Loved this episode, it's always great when you do one of marvel's shittiest arcs :D best time when atlantis attacks is in that shitty AvX though, when Phoenix powered Namor is just going "Screw you wakanda, go take a bath" and then all wakandinese or wakandians die, which made the hickman's new avengers run even better (because black panther and namor really dont get along :D) Keep herding those nerfs!
Pick it up right here: amzn.to/1GVCGfP
Every writer for a Marvel book that didn't want to write for this event: "Then everything changed when Atlantis Attacked."
I love it when y'all point out how terribly written some comics are. It's very real and honest assessment, which I don't think many comic book youtubers do. Keep it up guys.

20:10-21:45 is gonna be one of those classic comicpop moments. I can feel it
The intro song to every comic pop back issues makes me feel like i should watch it with a monocle, top hat, and a cane that is within a reachable distance
At the end of Secret Wars II, the Earth is being torn apart - The Molecule Man and Silver Surfer pull the Earth back together. It was one of the most vivid memories of my comic book reading youth. The Surfer's power is awesome.
Also - great video; very entertaining!
“Evolutionary War, we will never do that one”
-Sal
Almost a decade later, guardians of the galaxy 3 made Sal break his vow!
Love you guys lol always enjoy the old back issues.
I thought Sal was going to lose it when discussing the Skrull thing in Central Park lol
Did anyone else think this was an Aquaman book at first?
I would like to know how Ben and Ethan feel about comics and the comic book industry knowing what they know now.
"So. Ummm. . . Eternals, is it? What is it exactly that ya do here?"
Hmm. I'm gonna need a 15-letter phrase for "wasted effort". Also, what's another word, 8 down, for "brilliant commentators and reviewers"?
Classic Sal Rant. One of your best Back Issues. Brilliant.
OMG! I love watching you guys go over terrible stories like this on Back Issues! It's often more entertaining than discussion on good or iconic comics! This may very well be one of the funniest episodes of Back Issues ever... Could not stop laughing
Great episode guys!
The best commentary on one of the worst crossovers Marvels ever done. So so bad. Such a good episode :)
+Staff Sergeant Drew Matseshe We pride ourselves on cornering the market on in-depth discussions on obscure comic events. ;)
Thanks for doing such a classic marvel story - I love all the old school stories, come on Korvac Saga 1991 !!!
I was really hoping one of you would say, "It's not Attuma!"
Great video guys, book 13 sounds great. the audio is also much better than last weeks Back Issues!
I knew it! I could tell from the Black Bolt episode. Ethan had the book in his hand+the background. This is a great episode btw.
I love this episode so much, I think it’s the most sal laughs in one and it’s wonderful to see 😂
I don't think I've watched tv since I found this playlist you guys are great and hilarious thanks for a great show
I had the What If Atlantis Attacks where they won. Seems that it was a much better purchase.
Drinking game: Every time Sal gets righteously outraged at Marvel, take a shot.
Sal I support you.
3:35. "That's what She-Hulk said!"
That story about the snake crown at the end includes the squadron supreme
Bless you all for reviewing this story. I remember getting a few Spider-Man annuals that crossed over with it back when it came out and was VERY confused. I think the AMS annual had the Abomination in it for some reason.
Now I know it wasn't worth reading up on. The only reasons I have any knowledge of this story and Evolutionary Wars was the "What If?" comics that came out about them.
This is by far my favorite episode for all the reasons you would think
IT'S NOT A TOOMAH!!!
That's all I could think of every time you said Attuma lol.
"Namor? _You're_ leading the Atlanteans now? I thought Attuma was their leader."
*Namor:* "IT'S NOT ATTUMA! It's not Attuma. Not anymore."
It's the same way with me. Sal also drew that parallel during the 20K Special.
+Just Some Guy with a Mustache that's awesome man.
The entire video I was distracted by the buff man in a speedo.
The joke about Ego and his dexterity is REALLY ironic now after Comic-Con.
I love that this ends with an extended rant addressing the question "Why didn't the Eternals stop Hitler?" Very prescient!
Atlantis Attacks was an important hallmark in my comic reading history. For twas when Atlantis Attacked that I realized I didnt necessarily have to read every issue of my favorite comic.
Hey guys, love your work! Will you ever do a back issues on Batman Earth One Vol. 2?
Think I'm a back issues addict.. I sit waiting for next episode.. Whilst watching this weeks!
I more episode until another crisis, will it be Zero Hour, or Crisis on Infinite Earths? These are the real questions.
+Mitchell George Or Final Crisis...
or final crisis but only 3 more days because we usually get back issues on wednesdays WHICH I LOVE
Coming back, this was really an episode I was thankful of the knowledge Marvel Ultimate Alliance bestowed upon young lil' me.
I clapped, I clapped when I saw Attuma in the book
This episode was SO much fun!
Yes!! Can't wait for the 90th episode
4:04 “as good as Alex Ross.” 😭
I remember the What If from this story and at the time I thought it was awesome. I still remember Wolverine stabbing Spiderman in the back.
The Marvel Handbook describes this story better but not as funny as you guys.
amazing, I didnt know how non sensical the original story was. I think I heard this event referenced once in the avengers assemble cartoon. well it was the first time I heard of attuma and he invaded new york in the first season and then later he would look for the serpent crown.
Aw yea new back issues
+Ronnie Fernandes my thoughts exactly
5 years late and I'm pretty sure I already said this once, but a Wizard from Conan was also a major villain in an X-Men story arc where he trapped Manhattan in a time bubble or something I don't remember. I also don't know if he was the same one from the movie. Kulan Gath was his name I believe.
The eternals origin doesn't say they were creating to protect the earth, it just says that they were created with the deviants as an experiment and protected humans from deviants.
DO SUPERIOR IRONMAN. PLEASE. I ALREADY LOVE YOUR CONTENT, I'LL LOVE YOU TOO.
Set is an actual Egyptian god of evil that sounds like it took character traits from another Egyptian God Apophis who is a giant snake destined to eat the Sun and destroy the world.
Were these Lemirians created by a guy named Jeff?
+Mercy's Little Show HA THAT IS FUNNY
Wut?
ScandalousSam Jeff Lemire is a writer
I read the "what if" story about this event...man, it was really weird...everybody dies (good and bad guys), but everyone ends up as snake people at the end, i think...
+superluigiac I have it too! It was so weird!
The omnibus is a reprint of each issue as was originally.
It was the story then a few independent stories origins etc
And a few issues were side stories independent and interconnected not necessary for the main story
the episode 89 is an event from 1989, coincidence??
Can you please do Legend of the Blue Marvel? :D
Surprised they didn’t have Mole Man attack next after finding the buried crown 😂
will you guys ever do infinity gauntlet
Oh you're in for a treat: th-cam.com/video/ItzP_-4pZSQ/w-d-xo.html
Pls the 2013 event Infinity by Jonathan Hickman.
this was epic ranting amig@s!
This sounds like the same kind of crossover that Operation Galactic Storm was, to a certain extent.
one issue ruined the momentum, black vortex did that for captain marvel, actually stopped reading because they literally sold me a random book without any warning that had nthing to do with the main story and was totally out of context for everything.
This one was amazing :D But I´m so HYPED for the next one. Crisis incoming!
one could say the eternal manipulated the events for Reed Richards to save the earth from galactis, by infleucing the watcher to help ?
Enternals so powerful they don't have to save the earth, but they still are quite lame
IT got much more confusing when The Crossing happened.
That comes up in our next 5 Things video!
Sal please Final Crisis, Ben and Ethan will flip with the Batman ending.
U should read space punisher I loved it
There was one where one skrull went benedict arnold and became a true hero. And then the skrull squad just killed him.
Why did it have to be snakes?
I had the what if for this. It was pretty batshit insane
Am I the only guy left that actually likes the Eternals? Never read the old stuff but I thoroughly enjoyed Neil Gaiman's mini series about them.
This isn't the same Gorr who would come back in Thor with Aaron's run is it? Because Thor becoming a God Killer sounds way to similar lol
It's spelled Gauhr.
haha not a crisis you got us
Does Gorr from the Deviants have any connection to Gorr the God Butcher?
+brandon willis No, this guy is spelled, "Ghaur."
I wonder if they'll hit 25k subs before the 100th episode of Back Issues.
plz do acts of vengeance
I have been searching for the Atlantis Attacks omnibus for a while. Maybe the story isn't as exciting as younger me remembers.
+Andrew Voyer I think perhaps it just hasn't aged well. At the time just having a big event cross multiple titles was probably pretty exciting.
The Lemurians look like Captain Planet
Yes they are way op like molecule man , one of them has the same power one of them is also superman. love the show
I can't tell witch Atlantis is worse, Namor's or Aquamans
namor
Isn't thanos the child of a titan and an eternal? I swear I heard that somewhere before, can anyone confirm this?
The Titans WERE Eternals. Thanos is basically a Deviant born to Eternals and proceeded to kill all the Titans because he's Thanos
So where tf were the externals during galactus attacking ?
Oooffff, I actually like Mike Mayhew's art. 🥺
Just throwing this out there. Lemuria is a mythical place like Atlantis. Marvel didn't create it.
Mythical? Or just lost and forgotten? Lol
Jake Stanley My god! You're blowing my mind!
Why didn't you guys do a crisis? It's the 90th episode.
Next week, dude. Make sure to check the intros, they show the episode number.
ComicPOP! Oh sorry about that. I thought it was 90 since there's 90 episodes in the Playlist as of now.
We didn't number the live Torment episode. It's technically a Back Issues, but it's also our first live show.
they tried to interweave black vortex with like 5 titles?
Hi I don't mean to bother you but are you ever planning to do a Moon Knight story? He's the character that got me into comics in general and my favourite to this day and I'm wondering what all your thoughts are on any of his story arcs.
We get a Crisis next week
YES!!!!!!
Guys how about Final crisis?
Welp, guess I've read Atlantis Attacks!
my sentiments exactly.
cool :) episode... by the way technically thanos is an eternal
Atum is the demogorge .
Didn't Galactus try to eat the Earth to kill the baby Celestial before it hatched..? The Eternals' purpose is to protect the baby, I think. Sure, with the Infinity Gauntlet Thor has no hope, but without it Thanos has been beaten into submission by Thor twice that I can remember. Let's be honest, Thanos wouldn't stand a chance against Odin.
I didn't watch this for the longest because I thought it was about aqua man
Up for 54 seconds woo.
I have to find this punisher/moon knight team up
I meant to include the cover in the conversation but it just slipped past me.
isn't set in actual mythology the Egyptian god of evil? where'd the conan shit come from? marvel was pretty good at keeping the mythology basis till this.
set is the Egyptian God of evil but he is also in Conan and marvel isn't that good at keeping with mythology.
CORNUTS ARE DELICIOUS BEN!!!
Loved this episode, it's always great when you do one of marvel's shittiest arcs :D
best time when atlantis attacks is in that shitty AvX though, when Phoenix powered Namor is just going "Screw you wakanda, go take a bath" and then all wakandinese or wakandians die, which made the hickman's new avengers run even better (because black panther and namor really dont get along :D)
