Volkswagen Touareg R Review: More is less

- The Volkswagen Touareg is the flagship luxury SUV within the German brand's lineup. In this CarGurus UK video, Chris Knapman tests the recently facelifted Touareg R plug-in hybrid to see if it's worthy of consideration alongside rivals such as the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7.
With an electric-only range of up to 30 miles and a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds, the Touareg R certainly has some on-paper appeal, but is it worth the extra money over a standard V6 model?

Look all cars in 2024 the new prices are a joke,,, the enjoyment for me has gone ,, will never be like it use to be
The same applies to milk, eggs, electricity and everything else. Life must be unfun for you😢
Wages have also never been higher - all relevant. I had one of the first UK RHD MK1 GTi Golf for just under £5000 in 1979
The enjoyment comes from driving the car, not spending the money.
Likewise a holiday, spent in the destination not how much it cost. Not a Tuareg driver but have the Tiguan R-Line and love it
Ridiculous nonsense
It has become ridiculously expensive
Owner of this Touareg for past 6 months but the v6 petrol and its an outstanding car for me.. previous owner for cayenne and GLE43 for 3 yrs each this car for me is much better without exaggeration.. for the ones who are talking about price tag where I’m the cayenne GLE or Q7/8 are USD50k more onwards! Ion not aware of infotainment system better than the one it’s equipped with, yet it needs a good month to be on top of how to get the max out of it.. I love the car… highly recommend checking it out if you are in the market for luxury suv..
The Touaregs' lack of popularity is the ridiculous high price and shockingly poor reliability!
I have had mine since April 2019 and it hasn’t failed once. In that time aside from servicing the only additional costs have been at 60000 miles for a set of tyres and brake pads all round.
@@Trickytimes So your one positive experience discounts the majority negative experience, which is indicated repeatedly in consumer survey after consumer survey. Is that what you're saying?
@lapamful No. I didn't say that. I said that I had experienced trouble-free motoring with mine.
Matrix LED headlights are all very clever, but they are also part of the reason why everyone’s insurance is going up (yes, including those who don’t have matrix lights). All of the tech in the front bumper means that minor repairs are no longer quick & cheap to fix. Who actually asked for any of that lane assist crap in the first place? Ironic that the review spends more time on how to turn them off than whether they are any good 😂
Legal requirement in Europe maybe?
Definitely agree that it make far more sense as a used buy.
VW the company that stopped listening to customers. Everyone hates the screens but they keep doing them. £80k think how eyewatering the depreciation will be!
Its too expensive for a VW end of
Three and a half tones?????
You would need a HGV license
Aside for its expensive list price, I’d find it more appealing if it had a 7 seat option. Far more attractive as a second hand buy. But it’s the lack of a seven seat option that kills it for me.
Agree with this.
I just can't see the point of making an SUV of this size and it not being a 7 seater.
@@wainerollins2587Porsche Cayenne doesn‘t have 7 seats either and there are more models like Touareg which only have 5 seats
When one of those 38,000 leds fail you'll need a new headlight.
Wrong!
Hey how about how it drives ? Yawn
What put me off is its legendary unrelibabilty. Seems this thing was put together by Diane Abbott.
But you mention all the competition, and all those competitors provide larger engines than this v6. This thing used to look a lot different, and it used to come with engine sizes up to V10 with over 1,000 nm of torque!!!
Those were the days...
What specific issues did this car have?
Promos
Pre-facelift model has drive assist features menu on a dedicated steering wheel button, and did not require accessing a menu on the touch screen. Perhaps this was missed in the review?
I would never buy an SUV. Never! Grrrrrr.
Buy a BMW •{|||||}{||||}•
It’s less is more in any direction
Over priced, lack of 7 seat option and quality of materials not upto scratch with the Q7!
This guy is my favourite motoring journo 👍🏻😊. BMW X5 is just better looking and all round better car ❗️
Ive seen so many bad comment in my opinion its a hybrid model so it's little bit expensive... It is comfortable to drive..
Nice but would never pick it over its rivals. I'm on 4th Vw
The reason why this car failed in UK was its price. It’s the same price as Q7 even though its build quality was cheaper and a less desirable brand.
Tough segment to stand out in and, for me, the Toureg doesn't!
No eres yo para que me hagas cosas malas
A very, very unreliable vehicle...even by VW standards of unreliability .
It's hybrid
Where is Rebecca?
Where is Rebecca?
Volvo far better in every way.
The 2liter engine its to small for it and the infotainment its bit outdated
These have chronic problems with leaky sunroof leaking. It leaks into the doors and fries the entirely electric lock mechanism. Very expensive repair, the sunroof comes out and the door(s) come off. Comfortable and relaxing cruiser (wibbly wobbly horrible mess if you "push on") but a huge design flaw. Volvo far superior.
