  • For my 1120th review, AJR tones their sound from excruciating to just terrible in their pursuit of empty melodrama, gutless spectacle, and an overprivileged status quo.
Best Songs: 'Turning Out Pt. ii', 'Don't Throw Out My Legos' (maybe)
Worst Song: 'Break My Face', 'Beats', 'Birthday Party', 'The Entertainment's Here'
    2/10

iTunes bio: Formed in 2005, New York City-based indie pop trio AJR mix barbershop harmonies, electronic music, and other styles into their eclectic sound. AJR feature the talents of the Met brothers, Adam (vocals/bass), Jack (vocals/guitar), and Ryan (guitar/piano/vocals), who grew up in New York and got their start busking around the city, covering songs by such bands as Fun., Vampire Weekend, and the Beach Boys.

David Sam Hunt only got an 8/10. He said Ex to See was his favorite song of the year and singlehandedly elevated the album, but that he wished more of the album would have played in that same vein (as well as being pissed at Sam Hunt for not releasing that song as a single). That’s why he appreciated Drinkin Too Much and Body Like a Back Road so much more than any of the singles off of Montevallo.

This is something I've noticed with music reviews in general. They're often much more concerned with what a song has to say than how it sounds. This can lead to horrible auditory experiences getting high praise, while very competent and highly visual tracks get inordinately panned.
I do appreciate where it's coming from, though. It's hard to communicate how something sounds and why that sound works or doesn't, outside of extremely broad terms. More specific analysis requires a more in-depth formal understanding of music to make than I'd wager most internet reviewers have, and certainly requires a more in-depth formal understanding of music to understand than the vast majority of their audience has. So if you're stuck using vague terms, and you're reviewing a huge number songs... that discussion is going to get extremely repetitive to make and to listen to. Plus music is media with some of the lowest barriers to entry of any art form, being easy to listen to for no cost and only requiring you to spend a few minutes to do it. If you want to know how a song sounds, you can just listen to it. It makes sense that reviews would spend their time analyzing things that actually require some level of analysis, and the analysis of which can be clearly communicated to a general audience.
    I get it.
But that focus creates a more notable disconnect between what's important for reviewers and what's important for everyone else than most other types of media out there. I guess that's part of why even the most popular music critics are barely as noticed as mid-tier critics of TV, games, and movies.

It’s not that great, but I do like some of the sound-blending, even if it’s a bit tasteless at times.
And, given loads of songs just celebrate partying, The Entertainment’s Here does at least touch on the concept of bread and circuses, of only in its own goofy way.
Keep up the good reviews, Mark!

This is such a strange band for me. Spoiler alert, I'm not a fan, but their particular brand of lyricism is, not fantastic to me, but it's often fairly distinctive. And the vocals are the forefront of their mixes so well, they are not hidden in the mix, but for the life of me I can't remember how a single one of their songs goes. I can't even remember the vibe of any of their songs. And that's strange, I've certainly listened to enough of their songs multiple times.
They just strike me as an incredibly unambitious band. For some reason, my brain wants to say that this album is a bit redundant with the Toro Y Moi album that came out this year. I'm not sure how much that makes sense, but I sure felt the compulsion to be reabsorbed into music with some atmosphere and care in its mix.

    Dear Mr.Spectrum Pulse,
Your review was completely misunderstood. You gave no credit to them except for a few slithers. As an AJR fan I have listened to all of their albums more than once and I can proove they are great. Neotheater acually has a hidden connection to the other songs in the album and nobody has completely decided what it meant. Although you either love or hate the album, doesn''t mean you should verbally be smacking them in the face. I hope that you will be able to read this comment and the points that I have presented. We like it, we don't tell you to like it.
People criticizing the review might argue they think the arguments aren't valid. I personally don't like it when people say stuff like: "How could anyone be so dumb to like this?" or "I'd like to see you defend yourself, I don't think you can" because it makes fans feel guilty or stupid for liking the album when honestly, it doesn't hurt you.
I don't hate the review just because he doesn't like the album. I don't really like the review but I'm not going to hate on this guy because he dislikes AJR.
There's been one or two comments of someone telling him he should kill himself, which I think goes way too far, but other than that it's just people reviewing the review.

@@Jenny67549 yeah when clearly the album is directed towards people moving on to be adults, meaning millennials at this point, and that some people won't be able to relate and people have different opinions on what lyrics are good and what aren't, for example, billie eilish, people say her music is for depressed 14 year Olds, and a huge amount of people can relate to her music, same thing for ajr but since it's a smaller band everyone has to say that they're music is a waste of time when they are making a difference even in the slightest, I have a point of view where the album is not about dumbing down words and trying to tell the person that they're wrongs are alright and that they shouldn't fix it, and a point that isn't Pointed out in any review that also clearly changes the view of where the album is coming from is that the music that is being produced is not a song that they think people will like, cause it's not, it's ajrs personal experiences in life and, they honestly couldn't care more if people don't like their music because theyre selling out shows and being successful while critics like this guy do nothing but bash albums, no hate to this guy, everyone has their opinion🤷‍♂️

There are some ideas in this album that have potentil (such as the beat on break my face that they screw up with the trumpets imo idk what they could have done but man those trumpets are a hit or miss) but sadly the band just took those ideas into another direction. Something that they SHould DEFINITLEY improve is the songwriting. btw i dont think Jack met is that punchable lol.
