    I’m so glad that I found a review that isn’t just a guy saying how trash the album is for the sole reason that it’s AJR. AJR strays from the norm and tries to use all the crazy beats and these critics all take this stray from normality as a bad thing and hate the album for it. Thank you for going into this for an open mind and trying to be a decent person. You earned a Like from me

    • @cartoondimensions
      @cartoondimensions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I don't think its necessarily because it's strays from the norm, there are a lot of weird shit that are loved by a lot of critics this is just different in the wrong places imo

    • @elih2782
      @elih2782 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I somewhat agree with you, however I don't think that they are consistently 'different in the wrong places'. I think that they are very adventurous, and their music varies a lot because of this. Some of their music is bad, i'll say that. But it isn't as bad as people say. The variety means that if you hear one of their songs and you want to hear more like it, the chances are you won't. This has made it harder for them to grow, and harder for them to get fans that stay around. It also means that some will come for a type of music, but end up disliking the rest of it. That's my theory as to why there's so much hate.
      And about critics liking some 'weird shit', Please try to find a band/group that makes a huge variety of 'weird shit' and is still praised by critics. A bad apple spoils the bunch, and with so many types of music, any of them could be a bad apple in the reviewers eyes.
      Sorry for the essay, reading your reply just brought back some thoughts about this subject I've had for a while now.

      @TECfan1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@elih2782 There are plenty of bands like that which are praised by critics. King Gizard, St. Vincent, Portugal. The Man, Beck (early), Radiohead...etc...etc. The difference is those bands organized the music better and the lyrics have depth.

    I feel like AJR are unique in that they don't try to be super cerebral in how they present their lyrics. They go for the emotional resonance rather than trying to impress you with clever lyrics. They have their songs straight forward telling you how they feel and how they know a lot of other people feel as well. For example, Don't throw out my Legos. They use legos as a not so subtle indicator of youth, innocence, and lack of responsibility. The whole song is about how he's conflicted in wanting to grow up and have independence, but also wishing that he doesn't have to lose the safety net of being at home with his parents and being able to stay how he is. They go in the opposite direction of most people and instead of trying to be clever and fail, they go directly for the shared emotions. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but definitely appreciable for the effort.

    Nice critiques, I think that a lot of their lyrics are definitely more niche and for a certain crowd. Like if you’re a high school junior/senior or college kid, even if the lyrics are not particularly deep or groovy, they are honest and relatable for the demographic and that plays a big role in their kind of niche popularity

That was one of the only albums that I felt connected to, and it was irritating to see so much flack being thrown at it. Honestly, just pay it no mind. All that matters is that you enjoy it. These guys are where they’re at for a reason, because they have fans like you! And i respect u for actually being as honest as you can with this review, thanks

    I think AJR is the type of group that has a lot of potential but is always held back by trying to do wacky stuff and basic writing. I like the vocals but the writing always takes me out of the song. Honestly I felt this was more controlled in a way so that's a plus and Turning Out Pt. ii was honestly one of the best ballads I've heard and Karma is super catchy so props to them. I don't hate them I just think that the concepts aren't fully developed making the music messy

    23:12 PLOT TWIST!

  • @ianmitchell5979
    @ianmitchell5979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think AJR's lyrics say themselves how it feels to be them "They wanted heaven from me. I gave them hell! Now they want something bigger. I'm overwhelmed!"
    There was also an interview from AJR where he said "They tell us to be different, but no one told me I could go too far."
    The chaos in their music to me gives a sense of how weird and overwhelming it can be to be human, and to be around other humans in his experience.
    I found so many of their songs to be incredibly relatable for me, as I often don't know who I am. I'm a bunch of different people depending on who I'm around, in order to please them or work with them well.
    Whenever I look at myself, all I see is a bundle of different identities and I can't tell the difference between myself and the person they see.
    So whenever I listen to AJR, how they make sense of the chaos we deal with personally becomes a strong hitter for me, and even the weirdest parts end up making sense to me in my own way.

    What I would suggest you do is that in the description leave your favorite tracks, least favorite tracks, and a rating from 1-10, like how other music reviewers do, just so we get a better understanding of how you felt about the album. If you don’t want to that’s perfectly fine. Also I really liked the review :)

    This is a great review! Everyone else comes into this expecting it to be bad. You have an open mind for this. I really enjoyed this! I think another album that would be interesting is living room. It is AJR’s 1st album. I have heard a few songs in it. I don’t know how I really feel about it but it would be cool to see how you feel about it! Also, at the end of Karma did you notice that they used the melody of 100 bad days during the big finish?

    • @TheTuneUp
      @TheTuneUp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for watching!! And yeah, I feel like they get unnecessary hate. I’m not a fan, but I don’t mercilessly lay into their albums. It’s not that serious, you know? I didn’t even know they had an album before The Click, but that’s intriguing lol I didn’t catch that use of 100 Bad Days at the end of Karma actually. I’ll go back and peep it though!

    Nice video! Was there a reason you didn't mention anything after listening to Turning Out Pt II? It was probably one of the most well received songs on Neotheater, and I'm a little disappointed you didn't give much opinion on it. Still, I appreciate the video man! First time on the channel :)

      Thanks for watching!!! And yeah, I just didn’t wanna sound redundant with giving my thoughts on Turning Out Pt. ii. I just left that clip in of me shrugging because I felt that there was no need for me to say more of what I had already said. The song didn’t do anything for me, but I’m happy it’s resonating with the fans! That’s all that matters!!

    Tbh I really relate to Next Up Forever, because I’m a junior in highschool. I have those same fears they voiced in the lyrics. “I’m kinda scared of graduation, cause who am I when this is done?” and “I know I gotta grow up sometime, but I’m not fucking ready yet.” It’s part of why I like they’re music. It can definitely be for a certain crowd tho.

    I love AJR I saw them live the other day. They were great. Sometimes it takes a few listens to really appreciate their sound and get into it. And AJR are nerds lol it’s a part of their gimmick as you questioned. To me it’s what makes them lovable. I disagree with you on a lot of these opinions, it’s fine if it’s not your thing tho. You don’t seem like they’d be your style

  • @J_Lups
    @J_Lups 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Personally I’m a big AJR fan but I can see how you would disagree. It’s not for everyone. I was so exited when you liked The Entertainment’s Here cause that has definitely been my favorite song in the album so far. Even though I like Break my face too I think if they just held back on the high pitched distorted “yep”s and “ahhhhh”s it would make the song much more universally enjoyable while also giving it a completely different and more fresh feel.

    • @J_Lups
      @J_Lups 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, a hip hop kinda guy has very different musical composition values, likewise other genre preferring dude, you actually like the tracks with trap like samples on them. Overall, most people either you prefer what genre you prefer shows their musical indivalism whenever their review, blinding their expectation of what they might expected from the album. That didn't totally happened here(I'm not judging you are a hip hop kinda guy, just my observation). And I salute and enjoy your take on Neotheather. Good job, I might as well subscribe.

      You’re 100% correct!! I’m more of an R&B guy, but you’re right in our favorite genres shaping our compensation values! It’s not intentional, but everyone’s got a vibe or feeling they gravitate towards! What I like to do, is always state that, but keep my mind open to something I may truly enjoy!!
