    LOL Mark. I can honestly say I've never disagreed with you more on an album. I love this whole thing start to finish. I think it's an earnest, thoroughly modern pop record about growing up and anxiety. I like how much it deals with guilt, sobriety, and career in a really smart way. (I think there's something subversive and honest about songs like "No Grass Today" and "Weak" that beg the question about why he's even singing about this stuff if it REALLY doesn't bother him.) And it's exciting to listen to. I'm into how ADD the production is. Oh well. We are NOT on the same page on this one, and that's okay!

    • @aronpuma5962
      @aronpuma5962 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Hm, personally I think part of Mark's distaste is comparison to other artists who already have done music in this mold, but to him, better. Obviously Mark sites Jon Bellion and Twenty One Pilots, but if I may share a personal example that more defines my view of the album, I decided to listen to "No Grass Today" out of curiosity, and I wasn't angry but I have no use for it. I have no use for it because I already heard this song earlier this year.
      That song is "Drugs" by Alltta. Now, Alltta is collaboration between rapper Mr. J Medeiros and producer 20syl, and their song "Drugs" is remarkably similar to "No Grass Today" in concept, execution, lyrical ideas, even some production elements. And I would say both sound about equally preachy, "Drugs" is not like my favorite song or anything. But to me it just, works a lot better. The first reason for me is that it has a better melody. I don't what to grasp onto in "No Grass Today" because the vocal melody isn't well matched by the instrumental tones. There isn't an underlying harmonic structure that sticks in my head on "No Grass Today" and I kinda struggle to call up what the songs sounds like to my memory. 20syl has a clear melodic and harmonic throughline in his song that just connects with me a lot more, and even though that song also has a lot of melodic ideas, they seem connected, they all fit the harmoic structure, and feel like logical extensions of the last. It sticks in my memory.
      And that includes Mr. J Medeiros's flow. Honestly, I feel his flow fits the song melodicaly more than in AJR (not sure of the singer's name). And the lyrics make Mr. J Medeiros a bit more of a real figure. "Drugs" has these very specific details and circumstances that flow into each other. Not perfectly, but it builds reasoning, to explain what Medeiros thinks on drugs and lets him make his statement on it. And even though that statement is a tad wishy washy, you see why. He sounds like a person who has experience with this. AJR sounds a bit less believable, and more importantly, the ideas don't really build as well to me.
      Is "No Grass Today" my worst song ever? No, I just have no use for it and when I listen to it, I can only think of songs that sound better.

    • @spyral43
      @spyral43 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      lol okay, I'm gonna say this right now: I enjoy both bands quite a bit. AJR has problems, but I really do respect them and enjoy the majority of their songs. But their original Overture (nor their new Overture) don't SOUND anything like Hand of God. The IDEA of mashing most of the songs on the album into a piece was similar, sure. But this is not a new idea in the lightest sense. A traditional Overture was mainly used in classical music at first (I believe) where it served as a prelude to the show. It, too, combined several of the ideas of the upcoming music into a single piece. My point here is that there's a difference between using a trope that's been in music for several centuries and blatantly ripping off a melody that's used in about a third of a song

While Panic at the Disco makes really good songs, and Brendon Urie is one of the most likeable celebrities of all time, they make music for a specific niche, so I can understand people not liking them. @@BingbongDeNiro the majority of the music was made by jack and Ryan who were 19 and 22 I think when this came out. they’re millennials/ gen z (I think late gen z actually) making songs. its about their experiences, so they would be relatable to an audience in that age group. i don’t understand why most of the critics “insult” them by saying it’s millennial pop music. like it’s pop music made by millennials I don’t know what they were expecting-

    I checked using Ctrl-F on the text version of the review, and the words "decent", "good" or "great" don't appear *once* in a positive context in relation to the album. Wow.
    Edit: Oh yeah, and Mark says "fuck" twelve times.

    I read the description thinking there were songs on the album titled N/A and I can't, too many I just can't.

    I love this album. It's okay if you disagree, but this review is a bit excessive.

      Maybe he should have referred to it as a review/rant, but I think everything he has to say is genuine. He has opinions on it that are strong, stronger than his other videos for sure but they're still thoughts and criticisms of an album that he wouldn't necessarily recommend to people. And to that one person who horrendously misspelled opinion, reviews are supposed to be opinions. They're supposed to showcase what people like and dislike about a specific project and what they could do better in the future. Music criticism is so important because it's showing artists flaws in their own music and how they can correct it for the future as well as allow other artists to understand the flaws of someone else so they do not release music with the same problems. And if you ask me I don't see why this review would be held at a different standard than Anthony Fantano's Not Good series, where he rips albums apart with valid concerns about why a particular artist in no way achieved the success in a project. Yes, Mark got angry but everything he had to say was well thought out and could certainly help AJR create better projects. To the person who said this video was 21 minutes of hating, you obviously didn't watch the whole video. He wasn't just sitting in front of a camera whining about how this album sucks, he offers legitimate criticism with the anger and passion he provides with his directness of what the group fails to achieve with The Click.
