Hey Chris! First of all, great job with all your videos, i learned many things from them. Second, the video you mentioned above is not accesibile (video is private). Please check why is that! All the best from Romania, keep up the good work. Can't wait to see your next videos :)
1997 Ford Ranger 3.0 L ; Had serious problem with VERY HIGH idle speed 2300RPM. Watched Chris's video and followed his advice. Vacuum leaks everywhere, literally the old hoses just crumbled in my fingers. Wear gloves when your spraying carb cleaner and handling old hoses. First I unplugged the Idle Air Control Valve, idle went to 800rpm. Removed the ( IACV), sprayed carb cleaner into the bottom holes holding the part vertical like Chris demonstrated. Soaked the valve while I went for parts. Later. Cleaned the carbon junk with Q-tip . Reinstalled everything. Started the motor, right away the motor just purred at idle 800rpm. Thanks Chris
Whatever my car, whatever my problem, I end up every time with at least one Chris Fix video. A year ago I doubt I could tell you what's what under a bonnet, now working on a car is one of my few forms of relaxation. Thanks as always Mr Fix!
I wish I had had this video 10 years ago.... My 1995 Ford Contour V6 had serious idle problems for months. Finally it had to be towed to the dealer and they replaced this idle valve.... 10 years ago I hardly new anything about "modern" cars. Thanks to TH-cam videos like this, I have substantially improved my DIY automechanic skills.
Chris Fix! Ya did it again Buddy. I was chasing vacuum leaks on a stalling idle with no luck. Saw your video. Popped the IAC, blew it clean with sensor cleaner and it idles like a Timex. Thank again.
This made a big difference in my '89 S-10 4.3L. I can't emphasize enough how important it is after working on ANY sensor to operate the vehicle several times so the computer can "relearn" the correct idle speed. My '89 idled way too fast at first, but a few starts and stops solved that; I think the old gal has another 10 years in her! (the truck, not my wife!)
some ecu learn based on time running i believe Thanks m dogg for reminder to run a while. I just chngd my idle control motor and was hoping it's fixed, but maybe it is just re-learning and will take a crap again lol uh oh
Did this to my 88 Ford Taurus, and so far it seems I didn't break anything lol and my engine doesnt seem to be stalling anymore. The only weird thing about my control valve was it had some sort of spring and plate attached to one of the bolts and had a bunch of trouble getting it off, but in the end got everything assembled to how I believe it went. Chris fix is one of the most crystal clear mechanics on youtube!
Dude just seeing how much you improved with your content, voice tone, editing, skills and everything it's amazing, it shows how no one was born with talent you just simply learn. You helped me a lot in this car journey, thank you so much for that.
+ChrisFix I have 3 cars I'm having problems with. 97 Acura CL and 2 2000 BMW 3&5 Series. What would yu say an average or good RPM at cold start should be? On average. I'm at about 1100RPM on all 3
It's interesting to see the improvement in presentation from earlier videos like this one to the more recent videos. This was still very helpful, but you have clearly upped your game over the years! Thanks for everything.
@ChrisFix Awesome Job bro. I have a 99 Pontiac Grand Am. Very rough and sometimes stalling at idle. Took it to the mechanic (should have gone to your channel first) and $500 later I was in the same boat. After watching this video, and a few minutes of labor, it's running like brand new. MANY thanks and keep up the good work!
It can be a lot of things. I would first check for a vacuum leak (listen for a whistling/sucking sound while the engine is running). Next thing i would check is your mass airflow sensor. Since it stops happening when the car goes into closed loop (it warms up), it is a problem during open loop. In open loop, the MAF sensor and computer fuel tables are used. Do you have a check engine light on?
Chris in the off chance you see this comment, i must say you made incredible strides in the production quality of your videos. What you do is a gift to the people of the world (at least those who like working on their own cars). Love from israel.
Have been following u for a couple of years, saw you in this very different avatar today, but just as effective. Saved a lot of time, energy and money yet again today following you.
Chris, I watched this when you posted it just to watch it and support you. I'm back here after 10 years to watch it again to help me with a problem on my own mustang. Thanks buddy. Keep it up.
I just replaced this in my 01 f150. Starts with more of a power sound, run better during idle, accelerates a lot better and my gas mileage has improved.
I have a 99 Expedition and the IAC looks just like the one in the video. I took it off to clean it b/c the engine would sometimes idle at 1500 rpm or so when first started. After cleaning my IAC like Chris in the video, my Expy idles as it should! The great part: I saved myself $150+ by doing it myself! Thanks +ChrisFix!!
Thanks, Chris! Ended up just replacing the entire IAC on a 94 5.7L Chevy. This and replacing the TPS and TPS connectors solved a poor idle and fluttering RPM issue. Great video!
This guy is consice and well detailed I really like that, when I watch Eric The Car guy there's tooo much unnecessary crap being said which makes him difficult to follow and Scotty he's just gets straight to the point which is also good but too fast, Chrisfix is CLEAR AND CONCISE, Good job Chris now I will do this on Monday.
IMPACTxYoungfk Thanks a lot man! I am glad you like my videos and work hard to make them the best! Remember, new automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays!
Yea, you are mistaken. OBD1 is for all cars 1995 and older (depends when they started implementing it on cars). OBD1 was pretty much a test for the govt required OBD2 system which was mandatory on all vehicles built in 1996 and earlier.
Could be a lot of stuff... Are your exhaust manafolds glowing red at all? Do you have a vacuum leak? Are there any check engine lights? Is your air filter clean?
Wow compare the tool's from then and now...But as we say in my country,"τα εργαλεία δεν κάνουν τον μάστορα" that means "if you have the tool's that doesn't mean you are a craftsman." But you have the brains that is the most important tool and even with a cheap rachet you had the job done 😀😀😀
thanks chrisfix this works i had a high idle about 900 rpm with a loud humming noise i removed the IAC Valve and cleaned it with carb cleaner and now the car idle steady at 650-700 rpm with no humming noise 2001 ford expedition 4.6 v8 thank you
Great info! I injected the (SCTBU) "shake can thoroughly before use and BAM the flux capacitor began to wiggle parse the Y2K mainframe! Thank god this is working now. You are a life saver.
In my experience I've found it much easier to use a pick tool to get the dry carbon out first. It just cracks off and falls out so much easier. For the remnant carbon then use throttle body cleaner (or other aerosol cleaner). Makes for a more efficient use of time and more thorough cleaning. You definitely know your stuff just have that tip to share.
Thanks for the tip! I didnt include the pick idea you have because a lot of viewers dont know much about cars so they might break something in the process. But yes, that is def another way of doing it! Cheers!
ChrisFix Your GM IAC looks very similar to my Ford EGR. It's weird almost the same design used for 2 completely different systems. Same piston/stopper inside too. Kinda neat. Keep up the great videos.
So throttle body cleaner will work as well or carburator cleaner? Cus i bought the throttle body cleaner and I'm not trying to buy another spray to get the same job done

Great job on this video. Made it very easy for anyone to remove and clean this component. (28 years) mech on Helicopters, Cars, Trucks, and Boats, says two thumbs up!
I will be doing this next weekend. My car was skipping and idiling rough. I've changed the plugs and wires AND the 02 sensors. Runs much better but still having idling issues but not as bad. My next check it the IAC. Thank you for posting.
When Chris was bit unsure of his content and was cleaning car parts surfaces with his fingers and pawn if his hands. Crazy times hey! Today is hey guys wearing blue gloves using micro paper towels. Congrats man on your way to development and success. I guess the life lesson is you adapt, learn, manage, achieve and grow.
Austin Griffin How long did you run the engine? The check engine light will come on for sure. Once it detects that the IAC is not connected and it checks that a few times to make sure, it will come on.
This is because the car is not adjusting for the extra load put on by the AC at idle. Check the IAC like in this video. If it is dirty or broken it wont open up all of the way and you cannot get enough air.
I’m glad he shows to clean the soot from the area where the iac valve is. Most videos show just replacing it. I recently replaced my iac valve on my subaru and it was full of carbon and oil deposits. I’m a newby and was hoping to find out what caused the buildup and fix it myself
Thank you so much for your video.im not a mechanic and I can't afford the the idle control valve as it's 45 bucks at AutoZone. and can't afford and don't trust most mechanics,no offense guys.Your video by far was the best and straight forward video thank you and God bless you.If you lived close by I would buy you a beer.
Chris can you please make a video on vaccum leaks :'//// all the vidoes on vaccum leaks are hard to follow and don't show how to actually fix the leak. I need your knowledge on this seriously
I bought a really cool smoke machine on amazon. It was designed for small parties and was like $35 and free shipping. I just put a small hose on it and inserted it into my vacuum line and turned it on. Found the vacuum leak in seconds. Smoke came out of it. Not harmful at all. Also did the same thing on another car to find an exhaust leak. Put the small hose in the tailpipe and taped it shut and hit the smoke machine a few seconds and saw the smoke coming out of a bad weld. It was an inexpensive investment and works great at small parties too. :)
i use a unlight propane torch to find the vac. leak. when you get close to the leak the engine will smooth out and increase rpm. now thats old school. lol
Fricking dumb if you ask me... minuscule spark from anything (worn sparkplug wire for example) and KA-BOOM!!! Carb cleaner is quite flammable as well but at least you have been control of it than an invisible gas. Just a thought.
Far From Perfect Actually it’s perfectly safe because the “smoke” has no spark, it’s basically like vape smoke. If anything enough of that might cause a very small percentage of moisture inside the lines, but even then the percentage of moisture is minuscule enough not to cause damage in the short amount of time one would need it hooked up. Another thing is that if you take your big head to a mechanic and ask them to find a vacuum leak they should have a machine there that will do the same exact thing as this guy stated only thing is it will cost you around $50. All that being said it isn’t dangerous for humans or engines for that matter. And his idea isn’t original, it’s a technique that mechanics have been using for quite some time in their shops. The carb cleaner technique is much more dangerous.
Watching both videos is so cool. Its like seeing your favorite Baseball player going from Little League to hitting home runs in the World Series. Chris is my favorite TH-cam person. His videos make me want to break stuff just so I can fix it!
+pei bossman Exhaust gasses. Gasses get run back through the engine for emissions purposes and are often oily and sooty. They'll coat the back of the throttle body and IAC, sometimes to the point where the passage from the IAC is mostly blocked.
In my case it was both poor ignition coil function allowing unburnt gasses back through the vacumn hose, and because the ig coil had been only partially combusting the sparks were fouled a bit and my idle control motor also needed replaced and my 02 sensor had gone bad from the soot... once you have something causing soot, you gotta go back through a lot of affected components and sensors and clean up the mess, after you resolve the firing issues. Otherwise, crap still run poor. Carbon cleaner on air sensor. Change air filter if the re-circ gasses were blackening that. Look at all the common sense stuff (whatever had air/vacumn air (stuff connected to air box with vacumn or return hoses) or exhaust (02 sensor) going over it.
My gasket was loose when I cleaned mine and throttle body cleaner seeped between it and the valve. When I re-fitted it the car was very rough and and would not idle properly for days. Don't make this mistake.
Why so many dislikes? Befuddles me. I thought this was very informative especially if there are other mechanical parts that may need cleaning like such. Look around at other potential parts controlling the air into the engine. Maybe for too rich air situations. I am at this point myself with, after, checking for vacuum leaks and finding none I still have a too rich air mixture. I am not too proud to say I need help in figuring this out. I have a 2000 Grand Marquis. I changed my intake manifold, replaced all my gas jets with reconditioned, and tested them before I installed them. I still need to test fuel pressure. I am sick of this. I can't afford to bring it to another mechanic. This shouldn't be too difficult to balance out the fuel mixture from here. I repeatedly get the P0702 or P0705. What say you, Chris?
You are the man! I was prepared to take my truck to the Ford dealer, and we all know what happens there… Excellent video you save me a bunch of money, thanks.
too harsh? i used the carb cleaner i already had. cant keep so much liquids stacked when i have just one car to maintain.. also there is no plastic part so i hoped it was ok.
I used acdelco carb cleaner/conditioner and it works wonders. I had a humming sound coming from the IAC on my 03 Grand Marquis. Use plenty of it, soak it. Then dry it off.
Hey Chris, I really appreciate all the content you’ve made on your truck! I have a 3.0l Ranger myself, and your videos have really helped me fix it up. Keep them coming!

Austin Griffin How long did you run the engine? The check engine light will come on for sure. Once it detects that the IAC is not connected and it checks that a few times to make sure, it will come on.
When the car is idling and I turn the air con on the engine revs drop low and it shudders and dies out
This is because the car is not adjusting for the extra load put on by the AC at idle. Check the IAC like in this video. If it is dirty or broken it wont open up all of the way and you cannot get enough air.
Thanks I'll check it at the weekend.

Hey Chris, it is awesome to see how much your videos have grown and also how much your TH-cam channel has grown too... congrats
You sound way more energetic in your newer videos. Also great content
Money is a good motivator......
watched both the new and old videos and I have to say they both taught me something.
I love that IAC cleaning Chris...
Thank you.
8$ fix. Easy as pie. Thanks Chris, you are in a class all by yourself
Thank you very much!!!! jus t fixed my 96 ranger!
AWESOME! Thanks for letting me know! I love hearing success stories from my viewers!
Thank you, Christ for your help. I just fixed my son's pathfinder 93, with your help. ..!
Byron Ramirez AWESOME! Thanks for letting me know!
Chris. I want to suggest you making a video on how to make a vacuum leak smoke machine.
Yes this is GOLD
Here is a possibility:

Old guy Chris wasn't energetic. The modern Chris has some kind of holy energy which lights up my soul
2024 anyone?
Hell yeah
Hell yeah
Even your old videos are great man! Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot Matthew!
My car will idle at 500 rpm. Then it will dip like its gonna stall then it will jump back up to 500. What could be the problem?
Watching both videos is so cool. Its like seeing your favorite Baseball player going from Little League to hitting home runs in the World Series. Chris is my favorite TH-cam person. His videos make me want to break stuff just so I can fix it!
ChrisFix watching in 2018
look at how the production value changed! keep up the good work
what is the source of soot in the throttle body?...
+pei bossman Exhaust gasses. Gasses get run back through the engine for emissions purposes and are often oily and sooty. They'll coat the back of the throttle body and IAC, sometimes to the point where the passage from the IAC is mostly blocked.
Cheap gas can cause carbon build up.
Look at all the common sense stuff (whatever had air/vacumn air (stuff connected to air box with vacumn or return hoses) or exhaust (02 sensor) going over it.
pei broker the source of the carbon build up is the pcv valve and to a lesser extent the EGR valve.
Dude you rock, your the best TH-cam mechanic period
My gasket was loose when I cleaned mine and throttle body cleaner seeped between it and the valve.
When I re-fitted it the car was very rough and and would not idle properly for days.
Don't make this mistake.
Hey, ChrisFix! You're absolutely right - the videos are FAR more refined now. Great job! The information you bless us with is very helpful. 👊🙌☝️
This is so old my man is using one of those $2.99 ratchets from the parts store 😄
Hahahaha
I know this comment has been used a lot but I really do love how Chris has improved on his videos over the years
Whos here from the recent vid? 🙋♂️
I did
I just watched the idle air controller valve vid.
Chris talks way more smooth after 7 years of making videos. Should make more series of video what you do different than 5-7 years ago.
Before:- no hand gloves
Now :- oil is not good for skin so wear hand gloves
Pls show how to clean the throttle body, you are so detailed it would help a lot!
Can brake cleaner be used instead?
+Armando Torres Brake cleaner is pretty strong. Everyone has a version of air intake and throttle body cleaner that is a better choice for this.
also break cleaner is great for oil mostly and carbon is totally different so it probably not worth nearly as well as you might hope.
Who else came to this vid to the newer version of this one
You are the man! I was prepared to take my truck to the Ford dealer, and we all know what happens there… Excellent video you save me a bunch of money, thanks.
Only use Throttle body cleaner to clean TB and IAC. Carb cleaner is too harsh of a chemical for this application.
He says to check your manual on what type of cleaner to use multiple times. He also mentions to throttle body cleaner of it calls for it
too harsh? i used the carb cleaner i already had. cant keep so much liquids stacked when i have just one car to maintain.. also there is no plastic part so i hoped it was ok.
Manila Kid what about MAF cleaner?
I used acdelco carb cleaner/conditioner and it works wonders. I had a humming sound coming from the IAC on my 03 Grand Marquis. Use plenty of it, soak it. Then dry it off.
lalit nagrath yeah did you end up using that? How did it work?
How Chris is still responding to comments after 9 years. Fucking Legend.
Anyone watching in 2K19
No 2020

Tech Addy Lol nice use of the NBA reference.
@Duke of Haphazard 😂
Hey Chris, I really appreciate all the content you’ve made on your truck! I have a 3.0l Ranger myself, and your videos have really helped me fix it up. Keep them coming!
same!!
