  • Hello everyone! I received a call about a Ford Focus with a prevalent oil leak. From the diagnosis, I found that it has a leaking valve cover gasket. So, in this video, I have a step-by-step process to replace the valve cover gasket.
    This was repaired on a windy day, so I am not talking in this video. Just read the captions for instructions on this repair.
    All diagrams in this video were sourced from www.alldata.com.
    Thank you all so much for watching and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments!

    Good call to not use the felpro solenoid gaskets, I got to do this twice because those seals failed almost immediately after. Bought Ford ones the second time

    I replaced plugs and air filter after I’d basted air into the wells and cleaned up. Car was running bad in idle slow to drive and smoking. Thought it was MAF but it wasn’t. Now the car runs 👍

    Is this same engine as 2016 2.0L ? I've somewhat similar problem except no oil in plugs or coils . A few oil leaks including what looks at valve cover . Mechanic and I looked at a few ones like main rear seal / gasket where it meets transmission and oil pan where AC compressor mounting bolts it's cracked . Says I need to replace PCV valve , it's causing oil to leak ?? i just cleaned it as best I could with engine degreaser at car wash and used a can from Auto Zone hosed it off afterwards to spot anything else in order to get a verry good view ..Mechanic said I could save a lil money if I did the valve cover gasket myself . He quoted me a price on the other work and looks he's trying to get that money not mess with this ..

    I noticed you used the Fel Pro valve cover gasket for this repair. Is there a reason why you chose the Fel Pro valve cover gasket over the MAHLE valve cover gasket?

    I have a 2014 Ford Focus SE w/ 2.0L engine. Not much has changed since 2012.

      Should be the same as long as it's not a Turbo. This video is on a NA engine.

      @@nizzz9501 I believe the turbos have the same fuel system, so it should be a similar process. There may be a few additional lines that may need to be removed.

    I still need to know how to replace the solenoid seals…kind of a half assed video if you aren’t doing the whole job.

    Great video! Doing this repair this weekend with new plugs too. Is it easier to get at the plugs after the valve cover is off?

    • @theaffordablemechanic
      @theaffordablemechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Thank you so much for watching! You can see the plugs easier with the cover off, but you have the same access as far as replacing them. If your tube seals are leaking badly, like this one was, use a hand pump to vacuum out the oil before pulling the plugs. That way you don't get too much oil in your combustion chamber. Thanks again!

    I loosened all the 8mm bolts for the cover and it still wont come off. Looks like the vvt o rings may be stuck or corroded. Any tips on how to get unstuck?

    • @deathshead556
      @deathshead556 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same problem. I eventually took some WD40 to the VVT sulenoids to aide in getting them off, and they still tore. Cut the ring off. And as I was reinstalling the cover, my new seals tore, now I have to redo the job! Would like some tips on the reinstall, cause I’m about ready to take a file to those vvt sulenoids.

    Sir no need put silicon gasket?

    • @theaffordablemechanic
      @theaffordablemechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With rubber gaskets there is no silicone needed. Only a small amount where the timing cover meets the cylinder head.

      @@theaffordablemechanic Hi. I noticed I need to change out my valve cover gaskets...looks relatively simple. But just a question before I buy black RTV.... I noticed you used clear while others have said black. Is there any real functional difference between the black and clear in this application?

    • @theaffordablemechanic
      @theaffordablemechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TroyaJamilyn I used Permatex Ultra Gray. The black works as well. You just need a high temp, oil resistant silicone.

      @@theaffordablemechanic Thanks again for your helpful video. I was able to swap out the seals and there's no more leaking. But here's the interesting thing: I immediately gained 3mpg fuel increase, though the coils, boots and plugs were dry. I'm not making a whole lot of sense out of that one but I'll take it!
