    Going to be doing this job with my son tomorrow. I've done plenty of valve cover gaskets over the years, but not much work on Fords, and never a gasket on a plastic valve cover, so a bit of a new experience for me. Your video certainly helps me to familiarize myself with the procedure, and what things I will need to move out of my way to get good access.

    A few other tips that helped me:
    1. You might need to use a screw driver to LIGHTLY finesse the valve cover itself loose. Mine was on there pretty good, but once I cracked the seal open it came off easy.
    2. You can rent a torque ratchet at Auto Zone. $50 deposit that they give back when you return it within 90 days.
    3. I ALWAYS flag any plug that I disconnect with painters tape and I label and number them. It only takes a few minutes to do and it makes reassembly stress free and super easy.

    Tackled this today with help from your video. I was able to buy just the boots at Advance Auto for about $5/pc. Gave me an excuse to get a small torque wrench for inch pounds, but man it didn't feel like much. I probably would have way over done it by using the German standard Goodentight. Thanks for the videos!

      Recently completed this myself for the first time & thought the exact same thing regarding the torque. I actually used a larger torque wrench for foot-pounds & did the conversion. I must have checked like 3-4 different sources to make sure it wasn't a mistake bc to me it really felt like there was still a lot of slack left.

    This is a super great video for replacing that valve cover gasket! For those back wire retaining clips, they get super brittle because of the constant heat up and cool down of the engine with them sitting right above the exhaust manifold. Plus, ultraviolet light like from the sun is really bad on plastic too. I ended up replacing both of my plastic retaining clips with rubber cushioned metal clamps, 4 x 1/4" lock washers, and 4 x 6M-1.0 nuts, it's a pretty cheap alternative and shouldn't be as susceptible to breaking like the plastic ones are. Thanks again for a great informative video!

    It's a good video, would make one suggestion though I wouldn't use a rag to wipe the gasket surface or push down near the timing chain because the rags deposit lint they don't want to get into the engine and ultimately end up in the oil pickup screen, I rebuilt transmissions for 40 years in many times I saw do-it-yourselfers wipe parts with rags and you although you can't see it once they filled it with fluid and started the thing all the lint got sucked up into the filter and I saw many times where it actually plugged the filter up. the valve cover operation probably wouldn't put that much lint into the engine but I think I would use paper towels just to avoid any possibility of lint contamination

    Really great video!!! Just bought an 05 2.0 with a 114,000 for a beater. Took home from used car lot and ran into the exact same thing. Started pulling the non oem plugs out to change with motorcraft and the last cylinder boot had oil. Not as bad as you. When pulling the plug that oil went into the cylinder. I was able to get 80% out and reinstalled the old plugs and fired up. Smoked for about 20 seconds and cleared. Ordered the gasket and will install new plugs once the gasket is installed. Thanks again for an informative video!!!

    Used this video as my guide and got it done. My hiccups/advice for others:
    1) I got sprayed with gas when removing the line since the engine was hot. Would have gone bad if it hit something hot like exhaust manifold. Need to at least wrap rags around it before removing.
    2) New gasket wouldn't stay in place, kept falling out. I used grease to hold it in place.
    3) Some of that silicone you scrape off had been in a bad spot and seemed to deform the lip around the valve cover sealing surface on mine.

    Just had to replace the valve cover gasket, coils and plugs , and I was surprised how easy it was, the ball joints were a pain lol I bypassed all the rough stuff and replaced the upper and lower control arms. These little cars are pretty easy to work on minus the pain in the neck flex pipe.

  • @BobKontak
    @BobKontak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just did this yesterday on my 2010 Focus. Two driver's side plug holes filled with oil. One on end was to the top. Anyhoo, new plugs and gasket, 80% of rough idle gone so coil packs next in line. Wet rubber boots were a little chubby.
    Side note. Leaking cover gaskets on a 2005 Subaru Outback actually displayed marks on the spark plug, a distinct brown line, where the spark was traveling down the outside of the plug into the block.

  • @DocIlpalazzo
    @DocIlpalazzo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    xD I just did my valve cover gasket watching a TH-cam video. First time pulling anything with that much shit. Was intimidating at first, but really easy to do.
    There was so much oil in those little reservoirs that you couldn’t even see the spark plug. Oddly though, it never caused interference.
    And yes, motor craft doesn’t sell boots separately. The foreman told me that you don’t need to replace the coils unless they fail.

    • @TheJuanSolid
      @TheJuanSolid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree replaceing the coil is not needed, but I would replace the rubber still, you can get aftermarket ngk ones (I got them from Rock Auto).
      I cleaned a bunch of oil off my old boots and placed them in the spare parts bin. A week later I was organizing and found beaded up oil all over them (including inside). Seemed like the rubber absorbed oil and expelled it over time, sort of like condensation but oil. I just checked the bin again now and there was a light visible film of oil over the boots up to where they were soaking in oil. It's a shame motorcraft won't sell just the boot and spring but I would definitely spend $12 to $15 for new rubber boots after a valve cover gasket change to ensure a clean connection.
      The ngk spring will not twist on to the coil like the OEM motorcraft ones. I ended up reusing the old springs because I did not like the idea of them being loose in there with just compression holding them together (probably fine). I also had a small scratch, maybe start of a crack, in a coil so I replaced that one only just to be safe. I would reuse that coil but I am very hesitant on reusing any of these boots unless I was in a severe pinch.

    Changing my whole valve cover as we speak. Had one of the dog ears where a bolt goes develop a crack. Leaking oil on the exhaust. Changed the gasket 3 times in the 300k I’ve owned the car. Spark plug holes are full of oil every time. It’s my opinion that the plastic valve cover warps over time so the seal always fail

    The #4 spark plug well is the one full of oil here. I had an issue with the #4 spark plug well full of coolant. Not sure what happened there, but I think I know why: had the engine idling for almost 15 minutes - no issues. Came back almost two hours later, consistent 1 cylinder misfire. Computer identified it as #4. Pulled the coil, full of coolant. I suspect a possible radiator fan problem causing the engine to get quite warm allowing coolant to build pressure and push thru whatever path it found.
    Checked your video about coolant in the crankcase (blown head gasket?). Didn't find evidence of that. Checked the oil cap, valve train and dipstick - all good.

    • @KardiFan2000
      @KardiFan2000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should get a coolant pressure test done on the car (on the radiator cap). If it doesn't hold pressure, or if coolant slowly seeps through the head gasket, then you've found your problem.

    Great how to. Thanks! Add me to the list of leaky valve cover gaskets needing replacement. Went to change my plugs today and 3 of the 4 plug ports had oil. I removed the plugs for now (some oil got into the cylinder...will try and remove that before I put the new plugs in) and will take the valve cover off soon to replace the gaskets. Regarding the Ultra Black Permatex gasket compound, the instructions say let it set for an hour before fully torquing down the valve cover. Not sure if it matters that much, but thought I'd mention it.

    • @TheJuanSolid
      @TheJuanSolid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking about this. I did what the instructions said and put the two globs then immediately seated the valve cover and hand tightened gradually in the order linked. I waited a bit more then an hour and torqued it down in proper order. I did check it over a week later and still no leak at the seams. I am going to keep checking because it seems to me if the rtv hardens enough it could cause a tiny gap where the gasket, rtv, and metal meet when you torque it down. I wonder if the 1 hour wait before final torque is specifically when there is no other gasket being used. If no one hears back from me assume there was still no leak detected at the seams or around the rtv.

    • @boabm6522
      @boabm6522 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheJuanSolid the wait is so the compound sets enough that it acts like a gasket itself and not just squeeze out.

    • @TheJuanSolid
      @TheJuanSolid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boabm6522 Thanks! Makes sense. I am concerned in this application though because that's a gasket on a gasket, something I was always told is bad, like double gasketing a oil filter by accident. I can say this never leaked for me from the install procedure I noted above.

    • @thomasherring6640
      @thomasherring6640 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little late with a response here, but the liquid gasket seal missing might cause an oil leak, not likely it would cause any other issues. Check the PCV hose which is connected to drivers side rear of the valve cover. If that is leaking, or you forgot to reconnect it, that could cause your problem.

      It's technically a cylinder head temperature sensor but some auto parts places will have it listed as an engine coolant temperature sensor, which is what it checks. You'll need a 19mm deep socket to remove it and not all deep sockets will fit right if the inside is tapered potentially.

    Bolts on the new FORD genuine cover I ordered are way long. 1/4" drive torque wrench with deep 8mm socket is not long enough to reach the heads. Seeking options like using an adapter so that I can use a 3//8" 8mm socket. That gets me another half inch of depth so I can remove and install the new cover. Wacky. Has been a nightmare. Unless I can find a quarter inch 8mm socket that is bored out more to fit the long bolts.

    I like working like that when I have the tools and time, but we know there are times we aren't that lucky.
    I bought my lady a 2010 ford focus out here in Mexico. Out in the country. Luckily my uncle had some tools so I didn't had to go buy sockets and a wrench. I just loosen the harness and was able to slide the cover out. Well they didn't carry the cover in the only AutoZone in town so I had to order it online. Idk why it didn't had the hole for the electrical connector between the coils, so not having a drill with the bits my lady and I decided to heat up a kitchen knife and cut it away. I removed the gasket so it wouldn't get affected by the heat. When tightening the bolts for some reason I padded my pockets and I just looked at my lady with a serious face. She asked me what happened.....I forgot to put the center gasket back in place 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. I just loosen the cover and slid in the gasket in there. But yea.....that gasket looks like they did the bare minimal to avoid oil leaks.

    FTM - On the off chance you read this and care to reply, I have a question: Recently I acquired a 2006 2.3L Escape 5 speed for a song. 158K miles. Probably very unrealistically, the goal was to make it a runner for another 80-100K miles....Pulled real strong, no smoke, only leak was from the oil box (repaired). 27.2 MPG, observed. Recently swapped out the valve cover gaskets and thermostat. Only problem now is oil consumption: 400 mi/qt. Ouch. Running 5-20 synth blend. No valve blow by, no visible signs of where or how or why I'm burning so much oil. No oil in the plugs/cylinder. No oil in the radiator, no smell...but I've done quite a bit of reading, and have found the Duratec are famous for rapid engine oil loss and then basically blowing up. Any truth to this ? is there no cure for this condition? - Reading and comments suggest it's apparently at it's end of life - it is a "throw away engine"...correct? Man, I had high hopes, been a Ford man since 1996. I think this escape is trade-in bait...lick my wounds and move on.....Your thoughts, please.

Is it not advised to be removing/cleaning plugs with the cover off? I bought a new cover because mine was obviously warped at the rear on the passenger side. BTW my engine is running pretty well.
