    Previously, scale is a big problem for me. I was very thankful for this idea. I did try pure baby oil for 3 leaves of my orchids and it was successful. The following day, i saw the scale turned black. I tried spraying as well 2 tsp of baby oil mixed with insecticide in 1 liter in lemon plant. It was also successful. Again, thank you so much for this video. scale is not a problem anymore.

After a while a sooty mold (black) appeared! I did some research regarding this and got to the conclusion that sooty mold feeds off honeydew produced by scales. My citrus scale insects are bright orange. 3 or more times a year, I have to sponge them off with soapy water using a washing-up scourer. It takes about 2hrs. I could try the baby oil thing, but it's a tree, not a little houseplant !

  • @profecarrillo6479

    Buen día, Sir... I am having a big trouble, I have oak trees, I have ornamental bushes, I have orange trees, lemon trees, granada trees and I discovered a bunch of those guys (cottony cushion scales) on the citrus (orange and lemon) the lemon one it's devastated but it lacks the guys, the guys are now mostly in the orange and it's affected, it's drying out. I also have aloe vera plants btw...
    question is, is it true that if I put a lot of nitrogen in the fertilizer it will kill the scales when they suck the goodie from the tree or plant?
    I mean, I have a bunch of trees, some of them tall, I cannot reach them all the scales.

      His spray bottle looks like a one litre bottle. I think you could use a little less oil than this, experiment like he said leaves should be shiny with oil but not sticky with oil. Then you can adjust amount. Soap is just to bind the water and oil. Too much oil and the plant can't breath through it's pores (stomata) and will die.

    If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.
    I'm having trouble distinguishing possible hard shell scale from the normal brownish spots & growths on tropical plants such as monstera deliciousa, pothos, etc.
    I grow plants in a 10x20 greenhouse so I'm used to imperfections but the past couple of years I have alot more tropical/house plants than my typical annuals & bedding plants.
    I've encountered an array of different bug infestations over the last 15 years but never hard shelled scale - at least that I know of. I believe my plants were infested by being on tables under a pine tree that I now believe was infested also. I was constantly cleaning off the pine needles, I didn't think this would be harmful bc it was just a temporary place for them summer 2021.
    Early 2022 I cut off wheelbarrows full of foliage, sprayed neem oil repeatedly, and even tediously removed what I could see but I still don't know if I am still seeing scale or just normal growths on these plants. Please help. ♡ I have researched this extensively with still no definitive answer.
    Thank you ♡

    What if the bugs are in the roots ? Do you pick off the scales 1st? How do you stop them from returning, the eggs etc?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know how to control root scale. You probably need a systemic.

    Thank you so much for this simple solution and excellently explained. I am going to try this today and am sure this will work.
    I have two doubts though. 1. The spray bottle - Is it a 500 ml ? Since nowhere you mention it to get the right proportion.
    2. Most of the scale insects are on the flowers of my Phelo orchids. Will this spray be safe to use on the flowers ?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The proportions are not that critical - too much oil and the plant is sticky. Too little and it does not work. You want to see a slight shine on the leaves. It will probably shorten the life of the flower.

    I think my indoor tree got scale bugs from a fertilizer I bought. I fought for months & months & now the tree is so bad I'm just going to put it out of it's misery. My question is how can I safely dispose of the soil, so it doesn't affect other plants? I don't want to throw it out in my yard & risk infecting any outdoor plants.

      fertilizer will not give you scale.
      Just throw it outside - scale insects are everywhere.

    Neem oil doesn't work? It has to be baby oil?

    • @Gardenfundamentals1

      Neem oil also works - but baby oil does not stink so much and is cheaper.
