*** Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. Do not spray just alcohol-diluted in water.
Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present.
It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.
Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil.
*** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home.
Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.

The mixture in the video is roughly 79% water, 20% alcohol, and 1% soap by volume, in case anyone wants to (scale) the recipe.

      Hi Sally,
I am so glad I could help to figure our what the issue is with your Dracaena plant.
TIP: As soon as the infestation is under control and minimal, switch the treatment routine:
      - Wipe leaves with moist paper towel (dipped in water with a couple of drops of dish soap) to remove visible scale.
      - Use only Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 after cleaning to spray the plant.
      - Clean and spray (Lightly) once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.

Thanks for the great video. Had to pitch several plants that were badly infected (I was very sad about that). Working on trying to save my Desert Rose. I have been addicted to house plants for 40 years and this is only my second infestation of scale. One was from a new plant added to my group, the current infestation is from being outdoors during the summer months. I have large house plants that have been with me for years and am going to fight the good fight to keep the scale isolated. Your plants are absolutely beautiful and I couldn’t stop drooling over your ZZ plant!!!

As a follow up… I saved my desert rose plants after diligent treatment for scale. They rewarded me by being absolutely beautiful this summer. I did use a systemic throughout the summer and they handled it well. The bees don’t seem interested in the desert rose flowers so I felt ok using a systemic. No scale at the end of the outdoor season. Thanks for the Neem oil advice. I’ve used before for other purposes. Plants are sometimes challenging but the rewards are always worth the extra work ❤️

Thank you for this video. I recently found several scale bugs on my orchid underneath the leaves. I first noticed the sticky sap residue. I rinsed my plant and picked off all the scale bugs I could find then went online to figure out what to do next. I'm glad I found your video on the topic. I did spray the plant with neem oil since that's what I had readily available. I never thought to use alcohol. I will follow up in seven days to clean the plant again and spray the other plants with neem just in case.

    • @vontassenfarm4813
      @vontassenfarm4813 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jeanedarc Neem oil is a great repellent. For me the smell is just too strong, so I switched to washing my plants with Safer soap. It smells good and it’s good to use for house cleaning as well. I allow the soap to dry on the plant and either put it in quarantine with the soap on, or I rinse the soap off and spray it down with alcohol and put it in quarantine. I follow up with the same procedure in a week whether the plant needs it or not. Using a cotton ball or q-tip was too time consuming, so sticking a spray nozzle in the alcohol bottle works better for me. Fingers crossed, this has kept me from having a bad infestation.

Do you know if this spray is safe to use on Senecio Crassissimus Vertical Leaf Lavender Steps succulent?
I used it on a Huernia Zebrina and it worked good for that, so do you think it would be safe to spray on newly rooted cuttings of the Zebrina? I spot treated the cuttings with full strength 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, it didn't harm them and they rooted okay. Every once in awhile a few spots of scale show up that I have to take care of. I received both these plants in the same mail order and isolated them as I do all new plants. I've never had infestations in my huge collection of house plants except for soil mites (another mail order plant) and those were taken care of with one good treatment of water and peroxide treatment poured through the soil.

I am a little late to this video, but THANK YOU SO MUCH! Very helpful information. I knew you could use Isopropyl alcohol on succulents for a mealy bug infestation I once had, but did not know that I can use this for scales as well. I've been fighting these little monsters since last summer. Like someone else who posted, I had my houseplants outside last summer, and obviously, some got infected, but I did not notice this until much later. For some reason, they love my Kalanchoe plants! I even saw one (1) on my Haworthia fasciata plant, and this plant has a hard outer body, so I am not sure how one of these nasty scale bugs was able to attach itself. As you mentioned, I will have to really look closely at all my plants and also find the time to clean them. I need to downsize my plant collection. Thank you again!

LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and topsoil with Neem Oil once a week.
Once you do not see any new signs of scale, stop dish soap cleaning and use only Neem Oil.

This article explains it the best:
"Plants are like people when it comes to health: They’re much more likely to get sick if they’re stressed and unloved, and that applies to infestations as much as disease.
Pests will always go for the weak or stressed plant that doesn’t have enough nutrition or water,” said Yvonne Savio, creator of the Gardening in LA blog and the retired coordinator of the UC Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener program in Los Angeles."
You may read the full article here: www.latimes.com/lifestyle/story/2020-02-28/plants-attract-pests-stressed-unloved
      Important tips about the treatment:
      - Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
      - Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal.
Spray Lightly once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.
      - It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants.

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Sandra,
Yes, when there are too many plants it is very time consuming to clean them all or treat them when needed.
That is why I only have about 20 plants at home - as this is the maximum number of plants I can take the responsibility for and properly care for 😀
Plants don't have to be cleaned all at once. You may clean a different group of plants each week.
Grouping plants with issues together will help you to apply treatment faster + keeping them in a separate area will protect other plants from being infested.
Grouping plants by their watering needs will help you with the watering routine and save you time as well.
I hope you find a way to keep your plants clean as it is very important not only for your green family but for the air quality and your health as well.

    Hi Juliette:
When spraying the whole plant with your special solution....you said to get into the crevices/gaps and really soak down the plant. Is there no concern for solution to pool in the crevices/gaps and cause stem rot or crown rot on some plants?

    • @Mycityplants
      @Mycityplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question!
If the infestation is light to moderate, it should not take too long to fix the issue, and spraying will not cause rotting.
If the infestation is heavy, then spraying the plant for a long periods of time can cause a problem and not only because of water seating in gaps but also because of the solution’s ingredients.
Spraying once a week should provide enough time for the solution to evaporate between treatments.

Indoor temperatures are warm, and bugs are alive and flying around. They just not as active and do not multiply as fast during cold seasons.
Fungus gnats are the most annoying! 😀
They thrive and bread in the constantly moist soil/environment.
Here is my video about how to deal with gnats: bit.ly/3aVxLwH
If you have soil/potting mix in your terrarium, consider allowing it to dry more between waterings.
Aerate the soil/potting mix with a chopstick to allow the oxygen to get in and help it to dry faster.
To get rid of gnats more quickly, use small yellow sticky traps amzn.to/2sUBuG8 Gnats will land on the trap, get stuck, and die.

It is SO hard to manage scale insects infestations. You HAVE to REGULARLY inspect and treat your plants - as the person in the video said, weekly or biweekly is best, and critically-so in growing season.
From the information I’ve found, most solutions for light/early infestations are topical. I haven’t found any that can be absorbed through the plants’ root system that would kill or ward off the scale as they try to eat from the plant. And of course, the best solution for heavily-infested plants is to throw them away.
Does anyone have knowledge to share about solutions to scale insects that could be dissolved into water and watered into the plant??????? I would love to experiment with a tag-team of topical and watered solutions.

If the issue is under control now, switch to Neem Oil. It will not only treat the "leftover" of a problem but also prevent it.

      Hi Giang,
      Thank you for your comment.
YES, Before treating a plant, spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation.
Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal.
Spray Lightly once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present.

      Hi Jama,
      Thank you for watching. 🌱
Like mosquitoes, spiders, or flies - pests, mites, and all kinds of other bugs are a part of nature's creation. :)
How do bugs get to our plants?
      - Cut Flowers: Cut flowers, whether from the store or the garden, are possible carriers of houseplant bugs like aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs.
      - Fruits and Vegetables: Whether from the grocery store or the backyard garden, fresh produce can carry all types of houseplant bugs.
      - Other Bugs: It sounds crazy, but bugs like ants are known to bring sap-sucking pests like aphids, scale, and mealybugs to a houseplant.
      - Other Plants: Bugs can travel from one plant to another.
Doors, Air Vents, and Windows: Houseplant pests, like soil gnats and spider mites, can easily come through the window screens, open windows/doors (especially during warm seasons), or from anywhere in the building through an air vent.
      - Soil: If a plant had gnat's eggs in the soil (which are invisible to the human eye), you would notice an issue very early, within the first few days, as these guys spread fast. If the gnat issue happened later, they came from outside and spread due to overwatering, as they can only thrive in the constantly moist environment.

Actually, the absolute best way to gauruntee your plants do not become infested, is to ensure they have well established roots, in the proper growing medium, and have a properly balanced soil ph. The soil ph is a SUPER well kept secret that needs to not be a secret at all. It is literally the heart and sole of a healthy thriving plant

    • @meghanjohnson1175

@@DannyTillotson actually YES! With the proper knowledge (or guidance from a professional) and the right amount of diligence, you can ensure your plants are at an optimal state of health which gives them the ability to protect themselves from threats and recover quickly from past threats or damage.
Plants actually have multiple defense mechanisms built in to their chemical and genetic makeup. Those mechanisms are only able to be activated when plants are in a state of rest (meaning they haven't been recently shocked) and are at a health threshold of 80% or above. There are hundreds of different ways they protect themselves and they vary by species. But did you know, when a plant detects a threat such as a pest, it can actually signal other nearby plants that danger is near. The receiving plant can then start shifting its energy focus from growing/blooming/acclimating etc and instead focus on pest defense.
They can ALSO send out distress signals to PREDATORY bugs such as predatory mites, lady bugs, and lace wing bugs and the bugs will come to the plants rescue!

      @DannyTillotson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@meghanjohnson1175 That's truly amazing. Is that the case for all plants then? I mostly grow Monstera Thai Constellations and I had a bad infestation of scale, that I'm still dealing with. Systemic pesticide seems to be the only thing working after trying so many methods. But yeah, I did notice some plants were perfectly fine and untouched while others completely obliviated so I did wonder why the scale like some and not others. I'll do my best to improve the quality of their health. I think I was over watering them which caused some root rot and then the infestations began. It was horrible trying to heal the plants of root rot and scale at the same time it was like a double whamming for the plants. Fortunately most have survived but they had to lose some leaves.

Can I ask What experience do you have in the field of pests, do you have an update about on how this plant reacted to the treatment and proof as to whether or not it worked, do you have other information about the particular species of scale you treated and how it responded to the treatment?
I ask these questions because your video is one of the most viewed on TH-cam but it is lacking some VERY important information. Scale is not always going to represent as shiny large bumps, nor will it always look like the majority of the magnified photos on Google search. In fact, most often it won't look like either at all. Scale has hundreds of species That will represent themselves as an infestation differently and this will vary on each plant species. Additionally, immature scale or "crawlers" will not be bumps, and mature scale change in appearance as time goes on, as does the effected portion of the plant.
For example one of the most common species to effect philodendron appear as very tiny bumps (same sheen as the plants foliage, not shiny) initially. Overtime they will cluster and become matte in sheen, and eventually they will be brown, and appear "dried" or crispy. It will look as if the plant has scarring.
I just feel like it's our duty as influencers, experienced hobbyists, and professionals, to ensure all the information is out there and available!

      Hi Olivia,
      Thank you for watching!
I have been using mild dish soap to treat pest issues for many years, and it worked well for me.....
A very early stage of an infestation ( one or two visible intruders on leaves, before it can even be called the "Light infestation") can be easily stopped by using only mild dish soap, where more advanced infestation will require an alcohol involvement :)
Nothing will change with just one application, repeating the treatment with consistency is the key when it comes to fighting with pests.
Here is a bit more info about the power of soaps:
"Soaps have been used to control insects and combat pests for hundreds of years, but their effectiveness as pesticides has been scientifically established only recently.
Researchers have been studying how soaps work in combating pests. Some soaps simply wash off the outer waxy coating of the insect's cuticle, destroying its watertight quality and causing the insect to dry up and die. Other soaps have additional insecticidal properties that may affect the nervous system. Some insects get immobilized in soapy water, making them easier to rinse off the plants." - Agriculture and Natural Resources University of California.
