- I field test Canons RF200-800mm lens with good mate Jan Wegener and share loads of photos showing what is possible with this lens. Can you take nice shots at f/13 with and extender? You bet you can! I had loads of fun testing the lens and I hope you enjoy, Cheers, Duade

A fun day for sure and some great images. Hopefully we can repeat it soon. The lenses did really well.
I hope everyone enjoyed this little BTS video, lucky we didn’t lose it all 😂
Great video. One question - I gather you find the R5 with the 1.4 converter preferable to using the R7 without a converter?
@@terryallen4088personally I do. It just doesn’t jump office the R7 does. I don’t get all sharp shots but I feel like it’s more consistent
But it’s close and may be personal preference in the end. Obviously using the bare lens have advatanges like faster stop etc
Thanks mate, so much fun for sure, I can't wait to do it again. Cheers, Duade
@@jan_wegener Thanks. I've taken some photos with the R& and this lens and have been generally satisfied, but I'll certainly now be trying it with the R5 and the converter for comparison. As far as I'm concerned you and Duade provide the best, most informative videos for my purposes. My wife is a bird watcher so I'm generally tasked with trying to get photos of birds she spots.
Jan and Duade! My two favorite bird photographers in one video!!
Absolutely love to see you two together collaborating and not being competitive! 2 of my favorite you tube stars! I also appreciate your honesty on how the process works! The raw shots then edited are priceless. I’m not great at flight shots. I’m not sure if it’s settings or skill. I’d love to see a video on that! Happy New Year!
There’s way too much competitiveness going on in nature photography. In the end it should be about having fun out in the field and with good friends and getting some nice photos along the way
While my wife won’t like this video when I go out and buy one of these lenses. I love this video on the other hand, very informative.
@@jan_wegener This!!! It's common here in NJ, USA. I wish it wasn't so.
Thanks, it is my pleasure and yes so much fun, BIF is very difficult and I still take lots of soft shots. Ultimately its about shooting at a high shutter speed, tracking the bird and taking lots of shots. Good luck, Cheers, Duade
You two had way too much fun. I enjoyed your excitement. Thank you.
Thanks mate, it was a lot of fun, Cheers, Duade
Jan and Duade, I've been waiting for you fellows to break-out with your Canon gear. You guys are an excellent team in collaborative wildlife photography. My advice to any of your Canon or other camera model viewers is to grab a hot cup of coffee and find a comfortable chair to view the best RF wildlife video of 2024! The fact that you show the specific information for RAW and the edited images is a plus gift. Can't discount the excellent weather for your shoot. Glad your BTS video did not crash.
Wow, thank you!
So lovely see you to together. 1+1= 3! You both clearly love what you doing and being together. And at the same time you have different style and focus. Perfect!
As a Canon user and a big fan of both channels, this video is simply perfect. Those shots were just jaw-dropping, particularly the baby surrounded by the adults and the gull challenging the mother with the baby nearby. Just phenomenal. Thank you for sharing
Duade! 35,000 photos? You are almost obligated to tell us how on earth you pare that down to a manageable amount, haha
I wonder if Duade was on electronic shutter and Jan on mechanical. Of course could be the photographer. 13:41
Thanks mate, it was a lot of fun that is for sure. Jan was joking about the number, but I did end up taking a lot of photos whichwas a lot to go through :-) Cheers, Duade
Fess up Duade. How many?
G'day Andrew, I think over the two days it was around 16,000 so Jan wasn't far off :-) Cheers, Duade
@@Duade I am going to a similar place tomorrow here in Taiwan, hoping I have half the luck you two had! And definitely packing my extender~
Hi Duade, you guys had a great day. Thank you both for taking us with you! Very impressive. Again a field test what shows that the RF 200-800 mm is a good lens. It seems a lens with a good price-performance ratio. I think I’ll buy this lens over this year.
Thanks a lot guys!
Regards
Uwe

Great seeing the dynamic duo back together again 😁
Thanks, guys!!! Greetings from Slovenia! 👋
Great to see you guys together again. It's what its all about. And the birds, of course.
Thanks Scott, yes, always fun to have a shared experience, photos were a bonus, Cheers, Duade
My two favourite bird photographers with my new favourite lens….good way to start the new year! We see the Caspian tern occasionally here, also lots of fun to watch.
Awesome bird photographs.. 🐦 and let's see more videos like this one 😊
8:08 wow what a fantastic image!!! This is an awesome video that has it all: fun, photography and friendship. 👏
I watched the entire movie with a smile on my face. Thank you, gentlemen
Great video from you both. Really liked it Duade, thank you for sharing. And i am not even a canon shooter...😅 It is just all about just having fun with photographing birds👍 Well done😊
It is my pleasure, always fun to catch up with mates and have a shared experience. Cheers, Duade
Like watching Thomas Heaton and Mads Iverson together for landscape, but it's my birds/wildlife favorites instead! Nice to see the interaction and collaboration!
Thanks, yes, I love watching them too, Cheers, Duade
Fun times guys , great shots. My lens is still on backorder. If it wasn't for the fact I'm on the East coast of the US and with this bad weather I'll would have been upset over not having mine.
The final shot followed by the original raw, is so helpful. Really great idea to showcase your thought process and end result.
Enjoyable photoshoot Duade and Jan. Loved the shots of the terns and chicks
Thanks, it was a lot of fun, can't wait to do it again, Cheers, Duade
Fun video with some great photos. Thanks for going to all the trouble to take us along.
Lol... Jan is hilarious! 😂😂 love this collab!!! Great great video! Lol! That was fun to watch!
Great to hear you enjoyed it Desire, it was a lot of fun, Cheers, Duade
Wonderful work with the 200-800 showing what's possible with it alone and with the extender. The unscripted natural exchanges and joking around between you two truly make this a fantastic video. One of your best!
Canon should give each of you guys a years sponsorship for this effort. Very enjoyable video. Thank you, Duade.
Much appreciated!
Marvel eat your heart out, this is the most ambitious crossover event in history
Amazing to watch two legends together
11:40 What a picture! 👏
Great video you guys work so well together it’s so natural and I enjoy the banter between mates. I also really like the way Duade shows the actual raw shot then the crop and final shot
Thanks Steven, it is fun that is for sure, hopefully we can do it again one day. Glad you enjoy the raw overlays, Cheers, Duade
Agreed! The raw overlays are fantastic. Thanks for taking time to insert them into the video. @@Duade
I love seeing my two favorite photographers together. You each have great insights, and I love that you show the RAW file and the finished image.
It is my pleasure, always fun that is for sure. Cheers, Duade
Great job, guys! I can always relate to two friends shooting together. It's not just the photos you take, it's the friends getting together and enjoying both the photography and the friendship. Well done!
Thanks, totally agree, it is always fun when we head out together. Cheers, Duade
Hey Jan and Duade. Spectacular Images. Looks as good to me as anything I’ve seen on the internet. Bravo !
Many thanks!
Very good.Mouth watering place for bird photography.Happy to see Jan in good health condition.
Is there a trick to following birds in flight? I have a very hard time finding birds with long zooms. Great video, Duade! Good to see Jan, too!
Hey from Mombasa, Kenya
These two guys are best wildlife photographers I watch and I can’t be happier to see them collaborating. I wish to see more of these
I have learned a lot from Jan and Duade and they actually got me into bird photography
That is wonderful to hear, you live in a wonderful place for photography, Cheers, Duade
That was fun to watch as well! Almost like being there.... ;-)
Thank you both!
Our pleasure!
Beautiful video and place Duade. And with some amazing photos from both you and Jan. Always great to see you two together in this videos. Also happy to see that this lens works so well as it does. Wishing you both a great week, with some wonderful moments out there in the nature.
Cheers, Bjoern
Thanks mate, yes, a lot of fun and a shared experience is always nice. Cheers, Duade
I follow you both! cheers from the other side of the world, dominican republic 💪
Super cool you both photographing together. Amazing photos and video as always!
Thanks mate, it was a lot of fun, Cheers, Duade
Nice to see you both having fun and making wonderful pictures as well! Sharing a lot of info on this combination!
Great video - I really appreciate that you show the raw file, then the cropped and sweetened version. Keep up the great work.
Now that was very fun! You two were like a kid in a candy shop! 😁 And some great shots! The gull with the tern and the chick was an amazing shot.
Thanks, yes, it was a lot of fun and I agree we were both very happy with that gull vs tern shot. Cheers, Duade
You two are my favorite TH-cam creators!
Pretty amazing results. Thanks Mates.
The Video is absolutely amazing! I cant wait to order my 200-800!
Thanks Duade & Jan 👍🏻
There is nothing like the joy you can get from photographing wildlife.
A couple of times when you were facing the camera and talking I wanted to say, "turn around there's a great in flight shot you're missing!" LOL. What a great location. Thanks for a fun video. Makes me really look forward to spring here in Colorado when all the babies will start to appear.
I LOVE the video, so good to see 2 good mates enjoying photography!
Thank you both for reminding us that wildlife photography is above all fun and sometimes sharing with others which gives another dimension to the day! As for the softness of the zoom ring, my RF200-800 must be a little special but the ring is so much softer than my Sigma 150-600 that I have the impression that the RF200-800 is 2 at 3 times more flexible so it doesn't bother me, on the contrary!
Yes, totally agree, always fun to shoot with mates, great to hear your zoom ring is not as stiff as your Sigma, I think I am just used to the Sony and 100-500 which are much quicker. Cheers, Duade
Wonderful video! It’s great to see the two of you together!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow!’ Nice job you guys… great to see the collaboration ❤
Thanks Rich, it was a lot of fun, Cheers, Duade
Great to see you both doing a shoot together. Awesome video as always Duade, you both nailed some cracking shots.
Thanks Judy, it was a lot of fun that is for sure. Cheers, Duade
Really enjoyed seeing you and Jan testing out the big new canon zoom in varying light and different flight and roosting scenarios. Beautiful results at f13 with the tight portrait shots all with impressive blurred backgrounds. The versatility and sheer reach with the 1.4x extender were obvious without noticeable drop-off in quality. No trouble locking on with bird in flight shots once you worked out the flight pattern of the Terns. Thanks for sharing all the tips too from both of you. Cheers mate.
My pleasure Mike, in reality the 1.4 is too much for BIF but great for the portrait shots. Overall a very enjoyble time, Cheers, Duade
You two both ( you and Jan ) need to go to AZ In July or August I would love to show you guys some of the places to go see the Hummingbirds I think you guys would have a great time coming over and seeing that .
Thanks Gary, we would love to, maybe one day. Cheers, Duade
Great to see a couple of good mates and photographers together. What an awesome spot for bird photography. Fantastic vid Duade and Jan. That 200-800mm looks like it's a winner.
Thanks, yes a wonderful spot, and yes lens is working well so far. Cheers, Duade
One word: Beautiful! The close ups were amazing and such stunning landscape vistas. Very informative to see the RF 2-8 in action, and at a variety of focal lengths. Kind regards.
Thanks Jeffery, yes, it was a lot of fun, the lens is not perfect but for the price it does a great job, Cheers, Duade
Amazing, fast reaction (lens and photographer)😂!
Hey mate, I follow both of you...good to see both talents come together....we would like to see more videos with you 2 together....thanks
(They live so far away from each other now, since Jan moved way up to Queensland from Melbourne. So, it's a practicality issue.)
We ducks, geese, gulls, and the occasional coot bird, but... Nothing like those falcons. Beautiful shots! Love that you guys laid down because my brain was like hoping for that. Best shot I ever saw - my daughter got. She's 10. She even setup he shot and laid down to get the best angle on a sunset over a cliff. Such a simple trick and most tourists never feel comfortable or crosses their minds to do that for the shots.
Really liking these format of videos. Having best buds at the same spot. I watched Morten Hilmer's video last night with Morten and Jostein and truly enjoyed the adventure. Keep it up guys!
Nice to see you taking terns with your shots, good cobbers
First thing I see is that you have really fun, and sharing the passion of wildlife photography, I was trying to reach some youtubers in Europe, but they even bother to reply. So happy you are always replying and sharing with each other. You are the best, I am hoping to get my 200-800 on 19th January so I can take it on my trip to Bulgaria and Greece. Have fun and keep doing such a great job.
Thanks so much!
great video with both of you. my two favorite youtubers. great to know you have the great crested terns. at last one bird we share. i live by the red sea.
It’s great to see two of my favorites together. Thank you both for a fun and informative video. I’m glad you’re mates!
Dynamic Duo! Great to see my 2 favorite birders all in one show! Fantastic results from 200-800 + 1.4x. I love the Tern vs. Gull shot... just amazing! You 2 have just made this lens a lot harder to get! Thanks! I better get my order in to have any chance of getting a copy before summer!
Thanks Winston, it was a lot of fun and yes I too love that gull vs tern shot. The lens for its price is great, a few weaknesses which I will mention in the review but happy so far. Cheers, Duade
You need more crossover vlogs with Jan. You guys have great chemistry.
Thanks, yes, it was a lot of fun and I would love to do it again. Cheers, Duade
My two favorite Aussies! I'm delighted to see the two of you out shooting together. I'm still waiting on my RF 200-800. It's crazy to me that Canon didn't produce enough inventory, as usual. I already own the 1.4x. Thanks for taking shots with it so I could see it works with the lens.
Jan about time you came back to Victoria, love it when you both link up. I’ve been shooting (mainly out at Winton Wetlands) with the R6ii and 100-500 with a 1.4 extender but I think you’ve convinced me to go with the 200-800. Thanks for another top video Duade.
Another excellent video, full of useful tips and humor.
Fantastic guys. great to see you just enjoying the day and a lovely bit of sunshine to brighten a dull grey winter in the uk. Hopefully it brightens up tomorrow to put my new r7 and 100/500 through its paces
Tern, tern, tern; to everything there is a season. Great to see you two together.
Wonderfull, wonderfull, wonderfull video… We like it very much ❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Cheers!
I think i have never seen you so excited duade...
Out of curiosity why did you suddenly stop posting on your Instagram 😂, it's been like 3 years
Two of my favorite guys having a great time and capturing so many wonderful images. The joy exudes from both of you and makes the entire video all the more beautiful and enjoyable. Many, many thanks for sharing this terrific experience!
Thanks Ray, it was a lot of fun and always nice to have someone else who shares the same passion. Cheers, Duade
I've been there loads of times racing on the track, I forget how beautiful it is
Well that was fun. As soon as the video was over, I jumped on Google Maps to check out where you were. Zoomed in on the "Nobbies View Point" Thanks for the continuing accolades on the 200-800 lens. Getting closer to actually pulling the trigger on ordering one for myself. Guess I'll be on a waiting list ! Nice work boys !
You two look like you had a ball. How refreshing to watch a couple pros simply enjoying themselves. Thanks for sharing the time with us
Our pleasure!
Am loving it . Am
In the Galápagos Islands and it’s doing a great job supporting me
Gorgeous photos gentlemen! Surprised that Duade is not using a battery grip with the R5.
Thanks Trevor, it is a good question, I think I have always questioned the value as they are quite expensive and adds weight. I just change the battery when needed, I also dont shoot vertical very often. But in saying that, perhaps if I did get a grip that would change. I think there are after market grips as well but not sure how good they are. What is your experience? Cheers, Duade
You need more new members to help you with a grip. (Hint hint viewers!) The grip is so versatile and works on so many of your cameras - R6ii & R5 and hopefully the R5ii. Maybe the battery life gets better with the R5ii and maybe not. Battery life is really good with the R7, but my R5 needs my grip to get through the day.
@7:59 WOW! Great shot.
Hi Duade, certainly looks like you had a great time, and some of the pictures look superb. I am always amazed how good the eye tracking is on these mirrorless cameras when is it shown, the lens sounds and looks like it is winner. I wish I had known about this location last month when I was visiting, never mind there is always next time.
Thanks mate, yes, the eye tracking is very helpful for sure, yes, that was the first year for the colony so I am sure it will continue. Cheers, Duade
To see You two ( the dream team ) are having lots of fun is a joy for every viewer. Thanks !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff guys . You did a great job !
Duade, what a wonderful experience with these nesting terns! I guess this colony is very used to people standing on the boardwalk there. Least terns that nest at beaches near me will buzz right by you very aggressively and actually poop on you sometimes, when you get close enough for a respectfully-distanced shot. But, when you're able to get the pictures of them feeding and caring for the chicks, it's all worth it. The 200-800 continues to impress, even with the TC!
Thanks, yes, a very popular tourist location so the birds would be used to people, literally hundreds per day. Yes, the lens is not perfect but I have been impressed so far given the cost. Cheers, Duade
Great review! I'm looking forward to picking one of these up!
You two never fail to inspire!
Great again, the FuN MoNSTeRs of Photo. This joyful sharing is why you both survived medical stuff, hey, as I have , too- 3 Stents in Heart-Rt, C. A. Keep sharing KNow How and KaPoW Pix - from urban LA, CA USA
I always enjoy when you produce videos with Jan. What a blast of an episode!
Used to see peregrines sitting at the lookouts along that road all the time. Got some great portraits
Quel plaisir de partager cette session de photographie avec vous deux. C’est incroyable, thank you very much for this living and lovely video 😊
What a great video presentation of this session!
Thank you Duade+Jan
You're very welcome!
Best way to start off the New Year! Great to see.
Thanks guys!!! Great stuff
Excellent shots. You both were brave to add 1.4x to do BIF shots. Well, with good light, f13 is doable. I am impressed. I just got the RF 200-800 and tried that in storm lighting situation and it performed well. It is as sharp as the RF 100-500. Some people despise the 200-800 because of f9. They just don't know what they are talking about.
It’s surprisingly workable. I didnt think it would be good but I have used it a lot
Whan should i do, love the canon strategy with its f7.1,f8,f9, f 11 lenses ? You can do it. Canon users are just like apple ones. They will buy it, no mather what.
Great video! Good to see you and Jan together again. I just got my 200-800 yesterday and took it out for a quick test run and I am impressed. Very sharp and great reach. Can't wait to use it more with my R5 and R7! Cheers.
Congrats on the lens, for the price its great, a few weaknesses but overall a great lens for people to enjoy. Cheers, Duade
Loved watching you two enjoy the morning! What a perfect video, made me smile the whole time.
Excellent video you two some great images.
Loved the back-lit shots and the variety, trying to take different photos keeps life interesting. Great video, thank you both!
Oh, how good it is to see The Dynamic Duo together once more! As always I hoped for more, I'm a greedy bastard, I never get enough!🥰😍🤩Such a good video, vibrant with positivism AND excellent footage/photos👌👍Words ain't enough, it made me go crazy with emojis😂
Just in case my fave emojis gets envious/jealous:
Thanks Pia, it was a lot of fun and I wish we got to do it more often, unfortunately Jan just lives too far away. Hopefully I will get the chance to fly up and see him at some stage this year. Cheers, Duade
Beautiful video. The two of you together is a winner. It should happen again. You're both great photographers, obviously. But it's personality that makes or breaks a TH-cam channel, and both of you are always enjoyable. When you work together, it's a pleasure to watch.
I have to make a comment. You guys are in Australia in high summer. The light is as strong as it will ever be. Go to that same spot in 6 months and shoot at F/13 (or F/18) and it's going to be a different experience. Go someplace like Scotland right now, and the lack of light will be even more extreme. Even in high summer, the quality of your shots takes a dramatic uptick as the sun gets a bit more prominent. (Don't forget around 13:05 where you actually mention that there wasn't enough light, resulting in a poor quality shot.)
I finally got my hands on one of the 200-800's, and pretty much everything I said early on stands. This is something of a specialty lens, even with the huge zoom range. I wouldn't lug it long distances unless I knew for certain that I was going to have substantial light. And that might very well turn out to mean using it predominantly in the warmer half of the year, when the sun is strongest. You two are professionals who shoot every day, but even you felt the arm fatigue. Amateurs will feel it much sooner, and muscle fatigue brings jitters that are a killer with a super-long lens.
You guys had the perfect situation for this lens - and that's always the name of the game. I just think it's fair to let amateurs understand that while the lens may be "versatile" in terms of focal range, it's not nearly as versatile in terms of use scenarios. I had a guy tell me the other day that F/9 "isn't a problem". To which I responded, "Really... so you would buy a 24-70 F/9 lens if they made one?" Dead silence. The fact is, F/9 (or 13, or 18) IS a problem that has to be worked around and planned for. And sometimes... just not used.
It's great that you both had so much fun. I envy you the beautiful weather and the place where you live. It's -5 degrees Celsius here in Vienna 🙂
Great video as always! Such cool birds. It makes me want to make it to Australia even more!
@11:27 artistically this is one of the best bird shots I've seen... ✌🏻
