I enjoyed your comparison but as you mentioned then it often comes down to personal taste or a person might prioritize some aspects over others. Both the CW and Monta are both watches I'd love to own but most likely only one of them so nice to see them go head to head.

Until this video, I'd not heard of the Jack Mason and I've never seen a Monta. However, I own a C63 Sealander, 3 hand, blue on Bader bracelet. I bought it new two years ago when CW introduced the twin flag logo. It's an excellent watch, stylish and VERY comfortable and my Omegas are jealous of the amount of wrist time it gets. It also gets a lot of attention in high end watch shops, curious because they've not seen one and surprised how well it stands up against more mainstream brands. Good video as always.

Interesting. I’d have given movement to the Monta, as the 300 is a lot better than the 200 in my experience. My worry with scratch resistant coding is that long run they’ll be tricky to re-finish, but short term they definitely seem better. Interesting video!

I actually enjoy videos like this.
I think people need to understand that this of course is a somewhat a subjective opinion to a degree but coming from a reliable source. The value of subscribing to a channel is only elevated when shared perspectives can come together. Why else subscribe to a content creator. Conversation like this needs to be had more often respectfully so that we can all add more to the conversation even when coming from polar opposite views.
I think you were objective and transparent as possible and as a new content creators my self I know the leg work that goes into creating a video like this and it’s not easy.
So Thanks for your efforts and I hope you’re motivated to make more like this.

Greta video! I like that all three got a fair shake. I think a fairer comparison would be the C65 Dune against the Canton. The Sealander is the most budget watch CW makes, whereas the Dune is the next step up in finishing, so closer in price.

Great analysis. The Monta is nice however to me it feels more like a modern day Rolex Explorer and the Jack Mason is a slightly "prettier" watch with a more interesting dial and every single indice is "pretty" vs just the 12,3,6, and 9 on the Monta.

What's the best most affordable microbrand gada? With a steel bracelet 200$ -250$ ?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

These days that seems to be more Alibrand territory then micro brand. With micros you're more looking at $350 for some good ones. Like the Erebus Ascent.
Although Mark occasionally put some of his islander watches on sale for around that. So that'd be my first thing to look at. Like the isl-85 or isl-145.
Although these days San Martin is almost a microbrand. Mark recently started carrying it and that's kind of legitimized it. I picked up one of their Sn0144 watches and it's pretty great for the price. No review yet, working on it. But there are plenty of other videos out there at this point. I think those are regularly priced around $350, but over the holiday sales I got it for a little under $250. So those do drop

Not exactly... here is a short history of Jack Mason. And let me be clear, I'm writing this just to inform and not to defend the brand. Seems silly to say, but as a reviewer, I think it's important to draw a distinction. I should always stay somewhat impartial. My role here is to be an information source for those watching, and not be representing any particular brand.
Anyway... So they are a small brand that's been around for almost 10 years, but most of that time you could consider them to be a fashion brand. Even being carried in department stores for a while. About 2 years ago they really changed things up. They wanted to start building better watches with an eye on the enthusiast market. To the point that they want to be "The Microbrand of Texas".
Since then they have released five enthusiast-level watches. With the first one being the most successful, the Start-O-timer True GMT. In fact, they were one of the first micros to announce a watch with a 9075 movement. This was back when Miyota was being very selective about who was getting them.
With this last one, the Canton, they bumped up their quality as well as the price. Previously they were doing American-assembled watches for around $800-$1200. Where this one has improvements all around and went full Swiss. When they asked if I wanted to review the Canton they were pretty confident about the quality. So I said if they were that confident about it I could also do a comparison video between them and CW / Monta.
Normally I don't do "Vs" videos unless they are all watches I own, I don't think most brands would be up for that when they lend me something. But Jack Mason liked the idea, and I thought it be interesting to see how it stacked up. So here we are.

The Canton has too much dead space on the top half of the dial. That's how you ruin a good watch.

Do you think the logo is too small? Or the indices aren't big enough?

@@RelativeTime Just dead space. The balance with the bottom half is way out. It needs a logo AND name in that space.

Genuinely this is a load of BS. Are JM paying you??!!! Their watch is not in same league as the CW or Monta.

As I just replied to your other comment, what specifically do you disagree with. That's the reason I break it down into various categories so we can discuss what you don't like or disagree with.
As for accusing me of being some sort of shill, nope, there's no promotional tag here. Jack Mason has given me some watches in the past, but I'm not getting anything out of this one. They didn't offer, and I didn't ask.

@@RelativeTime ok. Case execution. Dial design. Bracelet. Features. Uniqueness. Value.
The main issue is the ranking 1/2/3 constantly. Just score on each watch independently out of 3. In some sections the differences are minimal, super subjective, or not relevant (such as features as one example) and all watches really should score the same. In other areas the difference is more stark (case design / value / movement etc) where the better watches will score better than move ahead. In need then the best watches win and not your favourite watch.
Having said all that it’s your channel. So fair enough use your metric - just seems massively flawed.

@@drdesign6886 Well let me put it this way, it's not my favorite watch. Out of the 3, the Triumph is actually my favorite. But that's beside the point. The thing is there is no perfect way to score a video like this. Different people value different things, let alone people like different types of designs, and no matter how hard I try and being completely objective there is always some amount of subjectivity to certain categories.
This is something I've thought about a lot in the past, and even at the end of one previous video I showed it by showing how different watches would win if I changed how the scoring worked. If things were independently scored, or if categories were weighted. Which is when I started saying (and maybe you missed that part here) that who wins these types of videos isn't nearly as important as the discussion that goes into it. As well as saying at the end that I don't view this as the final word, but more the beginning of a conversation.
Which is why I asked you where and how you disagree. It wasn't to try and pick a fight, but wanted to know more you were coming from. I try to do that with all these types of video and the comments that disagree. I see my role here with the channel as one to inform and facilitate discussions. Not to ever tell people what they should buy. So for me the whole Vs thing, or Competition, is more a vehicle to facilitate that.

Sorry, but normal time keepers are out of style and you don't see Rolex making a smartwatch. It's just a old fashioned style that we don't use anymore. If you compare how many watches there have been sold to smartwatches you'd be hard pressed to justify high end watches. Now I'm not saying they are bad, but if watches didn't get with the program, they will be left behind. The only reason watches are still useful if that some industries and governments still demand them as well as the military. Not because someone actually wants them. Sorry that's the reality.

Perhaps in time, but one thing to think about is how popular automatic watches are. At least within the watch collecting community. This is technology that was basicly obsolete back in the 70s, but watch collectors still prefer them.
Now I'm sure the watch-collecting community is still a fraction to the mainstream market, but seems to be big enough to support a few bigger brands, and a lot of small ones.

I have zero desire for _any_ smart watch. None. Charging them every day or every other day is absurd. I don't need or want my watch to tell me what is going on in my phone.
You are obviously watching the wrong channel.

I have a smart watch that I have worn everyday for the last five years. And it’ll still get plenty of wear. But I’m now keen to replace it with something simpler, more traditional, dare I say more mature? Classier? Either the CW Sealander or the Monta Atlas will be my first automatic watch.
Smart watches are all at the price point explored in this video but will all become obsolete to the point of being genuinely useless far sooner than any of these three does anyone still going to wear a 15 year old Apple Watch?
Sure my Garmin has way more functionality, the data it gathers and presents to me, compass, weather, all the sports tracking and fitness stuff. But to be honest I’m just… “over it”. It bores me now. It doesn’t look as good and it’ll never have the same appeal as a ‘proper’ watch.
I’m not everyone and smart watches are a huge part of the market now, like I say, I’ll still get plenty of use out of mine. But classic automatic and quartz timepieces are definitely not going away any time soon.
