Hello Uma shipmates. I am a 61 yo Aussie man. Today, by accident, I watched your very first vlog, 26May 2015. This video took me way back to my early 20's, when I started my sailing adventure. As I grew up on a farm, I knew early on, I wanted to see so much of the world. At 18 yo, I joined the Aussie airforce. But there was not enough adventure there for me. Then I wondered, how can I see the world. After watching a news real on some guys sailing across the Pacific on a balsa wood boat (yes it floated great), I too got the inspiration to something very similiar. At 26yo I went searching for a boat and like you, knew very little about boats and sailing and mechanics and building and all the rest. As luck would have it, I found an Islander 36, a sloop, for sail at a great price. Then all the hard work started, to change a 6 birth into only one bedroom. When I first purchased the I-36, I was single, but during the build, I met and married my wife. Now as we started our sailing life, we managed to increase our family. So there needed to be other bunks for our 2 children. Around the world we travelled, 28 times, with the children on board. Teaching them as we went, as well as their own learning experiences. My sailing days ended 4 yrs ago, with the passing of my wife. Our children, now in their 30's, are settled with their own families, not sailing, but that was another part of their upbringing. If in our days, we had the internet and vloging etc, things could have been much better, at least financially. I have never regetted anything along the way. Obtaining my 2 doctorates, one whilst at sea, our 2 children obtaining their own degrees, when living on the boat. Life was and still is so full of things to do and see, that even now, I am contented to buy my first "couch" with my new wife and now 2yo daughter as we live in the Philippines. My new wife and daughter have been going thru our 2mil pictures, seeing where I have been most of my life. Enjoy your travels and hope your troubles are only little things and keep on sailing. Oh what a journey you have been on. I can relate in wishing we had had the cameras/internet etc back in the day of our particular traveling journey. But I have the memories...........

@@chankwong9911 How did we support ourselves. If at 26 yo, with no sailing experience, then putting a boat together and go world sailing, well, nothing becomes too hard. Many thousands of jobs along the way. As all UMA style sailors know, living off the ocean, is a massive plus, during the leaner times. By age 30 and with my 2nd doctorate, I felt (knew) I could do almost anything, just have put in the hard work. I have worked trawlers, been a tutor (many times, not just to my own children), learn & taught, several languages (which always comes in handy), had my fair share of working on farms (along the way). To be honest, obtaining money, for our living style, was never an issue or hard to come by. As long as I was still able to provide for my family, especially schooling for my children, nothing was ever to hard. NO, there was NEVER any bad or illegal work, all hard and honest labour. Being born/raised on a farm, showed / taught me how to be a humble person and having a happy go-lucky nature, I made friends so easily and many lasted a very long time. Be true to yourself and your beginings in life, be kind, honest and truthful to all you meet and life will give back so much more, especially when you least expect the kindness of others.,,,, Hope that answered your question.

The neatness of your installation is a testament to the amount of skull sweat that went into the job. 90% of most jobs is the prep that makes the last 10% look and work well. Very nicely done! (The videography and editing ain't too shabby either.)
You got to love their positivity. After being face with having to rip apart their whole salon, or living room really, many sailors would swear and complain and TH-cam sailor would make a whole video about the hardships of living on a boat but Kika just yells “It’s going to be like Tetris!!!” and Dan chimes in with “yeah!!” and a laugh!

Dan KNOWS stuff! But then, he also grew up where his parents did things for themselves. Self reliance is not something that you learn in a day or two. I love everything that he does. I love watching "boat projects" on all the sailing channels. They inspire me to learn more. My electronics ability is low. Gotta learn it!

@@rickkwitkoski1976 Coming from a very tight means family, I learned early to make do with non-existing "budget".If I wanted something, I had to figure out how to earn or build it. No choice. My Dad had a very tough infancy, loosing his well doing father but killed from the dreaded Spanish flue in the early 1920s. He showed me everything, making out something useful if not a necessity out or fixing other people "garbage".
I never forgot Dad's deed of not waisting stuff, food or else. I had quite a succesful life so far, at 68 y.o. But still never waste nothing still worth fixing.
Daniel and lovely Kika started with no money but with a barely floating 50 + years lump of fiberglass. Look ai it now ! A North Atlantic 😱 crossing craft ! A feat by itself, a high tech jewel now !
These talented but also oh so determined kids are my heroes. Some day, they will be marvelous parents. Showing their children the true values of life and self reliance. In short, I love those two marvelous human beings ! ❤️

You took a VERY tedious and technically challenging planning and implimentation process, and presented an animated, upbeat, well photographed and fun summary for us to kinda appreciate the process. Well done, but we want more Kika!

Not smoke test ... we call it ground hog test. When you turn it on and there is a flash and you see you shadow that means 6 more weeks of electrical work.
Tip for soldering two loose wires; take a spray can cap like spray paint. Cut two slices into either side of the cap which will pinch and hold the wires as well as catch loose solder!

You took a very basic boat and over the years you have transformed Uma into something else so unique and special that I'm sure that even if she could be duplicated ,which she can't be because you can't copy the most important part - the spirit of the people who made her, it would probably cost megabucks to do. My first video I saw was with Dan during the hurricane and since then I've been watching many of your videos and I just want to say that the life you both live and share together is something to be truly desired. Your foresight and planning always pleasantly surprises me, and your attention to detail of minimal but achievable access for servicing and repair/replacement of components really is a joy to watch. As someone who has been a Field Service Engineer for over 40 Years, and due to retire in a few short weeks, you two give me faith that there are still folk out there who can plan ahead and do things right the first time. Oh, and just as importantly, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Never Grow Up, Grown-Ups are Boring!

You could not have done this without the long-term vision you developed from the very beginning of your renovation. You are rightfully proud of your accomplishment.
Did you install a Spectra way three valve on the product line before the tank? This valve is used to test the salinity of the product before you put it into your tank but more importantly to see if the product water has any odor (rotten eggs). Do not know if Spectra changed their manual but they used to say if you had this odor to change the filters. Do not bother to change the filters, just open the valve and dump the water into the bilge, sink, or bucket for 4-5 minutes and the odor will go away. Also do not throw away your filters when they get dirty they can be cleaned and re-used. I have filters with 1000+ hours and still work. I have a Spectra Newport 400 with 2874 hrs. and been cruising Mexico since 2010.
That is great confirmation on the power consumption, 3 watt hours per liter of water. That is fabulous. I shower every day aboard in 20 to 30 liters of water. I have a high school friend whose family bathed every day in water from a wood chip heater. They would gather up some sticks outside and that is all it took for steaming hot water. Mind you that was in Australia where it rains eucalyptus sticks continuously, and water only occasionally. So all sustainable living with all comforts is doable. Side bar: I have a switch on my toilet masserator so I can run it in reverse. I found that the masserator does a far better job running backwards while still pumping out but more slowly. The next step is to take some of the watermaker brine into that two flush “holding tank”, add an ioniser, and you are getting close to minimally polluting head flushing (with the consumption of a small amount of electricity).
I pretty much fix everything in my home and yards including adding and wiring greenhouse waterfalls etc., and get bummed out when I can’t readily get parts or complications arise. I can’t imagine trouble shooting everything you do in a TIGHT space in sub freezing weather. Your the MacGyver of sailboats, both of you, with the most stoic but serene and good natured attitudes I have ever seen. If the world had a third of your “can do” attitude we would be much better off!
An excellently produced video featuring a clear explanation of a bit complicated project that seemed simple. My favorite part though was the extra pair of gesticulating hands beside Dan's head, somehow telling a different story than his mouth was.

The great thing about connecting it yourself is in the future when you need to replace / repair a part you will not need an outside repairman, you can do it yourself. Great job ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐
Good video, here in Texas we buy our drinking water as well as pay for city water and utilities which add up to about $750/yr. We use about $10.00 a week for drinking and cooking. So for total water use a year is $1,270 and for 10 years is $12,700, and no matter what day it is my view out my back door is the same. I think you have a good deal!!!

Self installed, maybe. He may be creative in diverting lines, etc, but I doubt if any one person could do all the engineering and manufacturing of such a complicated piece of equipment to be able to call it 'selfmade'. No small sailing vessel should be w/o one, for sure.

You might want to consider getting a final filter after your tank to filter out tank impurities and an ultraviolet system just before your faucet to kill any bacteria or viruses that make their way into your tank, because your tanks are perfect breeding grounds for that. Check out the video on Gone with the Wynns’s channel about their water system about that. They’re really smart about that. . Also, a remineralizing filter to add minerals back to the water that are stripped by the water maker to improve taste is a good idea if you want, and is easy and not terribly expensive.

If there is ever a museum of boat technology and design Uma will be the center piece exhibit.
I made 10's of thousands of gallons of high quality water, and probably half of it in some pretty disgusting harbors. Fortunately the 20 and 5 micron pre-filters can be scrubbed with a long bristle brush in a bucket of fresh water to get multiple cycles from them before finally discarding them for new filters. Beautiful, well though out installation guys!

You may want to add a back flow protector on your brine hose. I found it was a good idea to pull a light line along with hoses and wires on a long passages just in case you need to add another hose or wire without having to take the boat apart. Be sure to carry a lot of extra filters!
The unit has a check valve built in to prevent back flow. But it’s also plumbed we’ll above the waterline and into a drain the exits above the waterline, so there isn’t much chance of pulling a siphon.
a normal person couldn't afford a lot of these upgrades. but I am glad you two are making a go of it.

Good work! Looks like the one, most important tool you need is a headlamp!! It's involved in every of your repair-/build-videos. Look for one that uses 18650-Cells. They have much more energy than AA-Cells and even much much much more than AAA-Cells. This may become handy and might be mandatory in case of an emergency. Look for a good brand like Olight, Fenix, Armytek, Nitecore, ThruNite or Acebeam. Don’t go for the cheap ones. BlackDiamond might be ok. But, believe me: It doesn’t compare to “the real ones”. Only downside might be the lack of good red light. In this territory the BlackDiomond’s are without concurrence, as far as I know. And maybe you need a better soldering iron. I can recommend the TS100. It looks verry tiny, but it has plenty of power. And you can run it from 24V DC! Your good work deserves good tools!!
Of all the equipment on my boat the watermarked is the one I love the most. It is the second closest thing to magic I know (Google is the first).

Totally Geeking on the tech videos and go back often to review them! Great vid! and Yup, all that planing has paid off. The fit into all spaces in a word, "perfect" also what happened with the leak? Was it a bur or.....? I watch a channel for yacht electrical engineers and Dan you would totally geek out, I would love to know the difference of the safety between the diesel systems for electiral generation and your very clean and efficient systems, you have custom built! Seems also you planned all around draw and capacity! Well done! Dan the fact that you actual put those explanations that are electrial into simpler terms than the other channels aids someone like me in understanding better! Also then I can geek out! So for me in atempting to understand the power plants yachts, even small yachts use, is far more difficult than I imagined, yet worth knowing. Also I never knew how dangerous those plants are, how many deaths and shorts and fires! Again thank you both for your channel, truly a balance of all sorts of info, fun and sailing

That first small pump looks like a D5 pump used by people for computer water cooling. They use them because they are so reliable so you should be pretty good if it is. They are sold by many companies, but they are all made by the same manufacturer. They aren't cheap compared to other pumps but much more reliable.
You guys are professionals and quite the installers.
I love your channel. I installed a generator and watermaker in my boat. My watermaker was Sea Recovery., which has a big 240Volt high pressure pump installation. To be fair the generator easily provided enough power to run the system as well as charging the batteries and powering the oven to make the morning bread.
I do regret not doing the analysis to find Spectra (to be fair I didn't have time.)

You can pick up sound insulation foam fairly easily and it's not going to be expensive to fit out that little area. Easy to mould and cut too.

You definitely made the right choice! Great video! Well done job of describing the Spectra. I installed one of the very early units on my boat. All electronics consisted of an on/ off switch! Everything was manual and worked great. We had a 44 ft boat so a lot more room and access. Yes, it works in really crappy water. You just need to clean the prefilters more. We made water in a filthy small bay in Mexico near Guatemala border. The river that fed into it had dead pigs floating into the little bay! Yes we drank that water for 2 months as our transmission went out and we had to get it rebuilt. (Great job and at tenth of what would have cost in the states) We never had a problem. I’m in my late seventies now and still alive!! Another thing that most people don’t realize is that most other water makers won’t work well at all in cold water and water as cold as there, probably wouldn’t work at all. The physics of the Clark pump are quite different that the “ brute force” types. I was a Specra Technition and have repaired many out there cruising. although they are quite dependable, it is a complex device and many people are not as capable as you guys are. Again, great choice for many reasons, the biggest is the efficiency. Amazing. And quiet. Enjoy.

This video has reaffirmed my belief that Dan can build anything. Amazing and Soooo organized. Even if I ever could fig out such a thing( HiGHLY DOUBTFUL) it wld definitely leak and have a GIANT tangle of wires! Seriously amazing work.
