    Squidge basically nailing why Leo Cullen won’t play Frawley at 10. He’s not a system robot like the Byrne brothers, he’s a game breaking 10 who takes games into his own hands.

    • @frankquinn6872
      @frankquinn6872 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly. Cullen has a simple choice - does he want to indulge the Byrne brothers or does he want to win titles? Because he can’t do both.

    • @ColmM36
      @ColmM36 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      It may also be down to the Byrne Bros father being one of the largest donors to Leinster rugby over the years, and if rumour is to be believed, also the reason behind Carberry being moved to Munster. Despite having a superior 10 in Frawley, the Byrnes are consistently started.
      Hopefully a wake up call for Leinster

      @@ColmM36 Colm, Carberry was moved to Munster because he wasn't getting game time with Sexton as the 1st choice out half. The IRFU recognised Carberry as the then future replacement and wanted to ensure he got to play regularly.

    Loved seeing Frawley get his more than deserved flowers. I know it most have been incredibly hard on him missing those two drop goals vs Toulouse but as you mentioned, if it wasn't for him, Leinster wouldn't have been in a position to win. It was a 'shot to nothing' having gotten us to a draw score line in the first place, and it was only whiskers away! Similarly, in ET, with the game having already slipped away, it was a second 'shot to nothing' to try get back into it (and Toulouse defended it so well that it made it an even harder kick). But Frawley is a pro and bc he's actually older than one would think (given his lack of intl caps ig) he's able to compartmentalize it. He knows he's a great kicker and he's shown us before on the big stage he can do it, as with his 60 odd meter penalty vs La Rochelle in the groups. He has nothing to prove to us as Leinster, and indeed Ireland fans, just that he wanted to show the rest of the world what he's capable of.
    As an aside, I don't fully buy the idea that Frawley dumbfounded SA into not thinking he was going for a drop goal. Yes, he did everything he could to do so, but you can see the look Blade takes before going to the ruck to see if Frawley is in the pocket. Kolbe noticed it, but bc of the skullduggery taking place that you pointed out, Koch is in his way, a Koch block if you will! (The ref also kinda in Kolbe's way but he has to stand somewhere in fairness). There's just no way imo that such an analytical team like SA, and the one team in world rugby who know the importance of having a clutch kicker in big matches didn't see the possibility of the drop goal before it was too late. Moreso it just being so difficult to prevent such a well executed play.
    Great vid as always, apologies for the rambling

      It's both surprising and unsurprising that it took Frawley so long to get capped. He was involved in Irish squads for two years before he got capped but cancelled games and injuries probably cost him a couple of caps in that period.

    Look at the All-Ireland Gaelic football final next Sunday. Now also know that most of the Irish team played the game when they were growing up. Remember ZinZan Brook he learned his drop goal technique through Gaelic football which the Irish brought to New Zealand. Frawley would have played for his local GAA team Skerries Harps as a young child.

      @fawltyoldboybasil.2178 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Natedawg38 Sexton prevented nothing when it comes to the development of a new 10. Johnny Sexton was quite simply one of the 2-3 greatest players EVER to wear the Ireland Jersey. I expect more time will have to pass before people come to recognize how good he actually was - he was playing Chess while his competition played Draughts. Throughout his time in the 10 Jersey (Ireland & Leinster) there wasn't another Out-half close to his skill level in the NH - Ian Madigan & Joey Carberry & Ross Byrne couldn't unseat him. The only player who had potential to push him was Paddy Jackson, whose playing career was derailed by that infamous trial. Sexton's predecessor, Ronan O'Gara was equally unopposed in Irish rugby as Out-half in his prime. Ireland has rarely produced situations like the Ollie Cambell vs Tony Ward one.
      We might have one now though on our hands with Crowley, Frawley and, Prendergast (very early days in his case). Just got to hope that the 2 Leinster boys actually get the opportunities to develop their game - situation at Leinster currently is not conducive towards that outcome and unless there is some change in that regard, Frawley might have to look to move to another province.

    I think the manner of the win rather than the win itself will prove to be of real value to Ireland going forward. Coming from behind and playing to the very last second is different to previous Irish statement victories. To do this at the end of an incredibly long season and minus some of our most significant players gives further value.

The Irish tests were an enormous spectical and for a very long time we got two of our huge stadiums packed to the brink, and it was worth it. As a SAFFA all tributes to the Irish #irishrugby and their great fans and also to our fans that were gracious in defete and are not these trolls on the web. I think these two test matches set us up for what is going to be a eye-opener for who is the best in the Southern Hemesphere, with the ABs and Wallabies with a new beginning and the Springboks bringing in fresh new talent but keeping the basis of the RWC team. Keep up the good work and maybe we will see you in Africa some day. There is nothing like a test match between the Boks and the ABs. Slightly negative regarding Ireland, but I think they problem solve really well, Farrell appears to have learnt from the WC, leaving players on to get the maximum time out of them, we saw SA replacing players before half time, top players subbed off early, and that injected a bit of energy into the team. Keeping Sexton on for the 80 mins v NZ a perfect example of not trusting replacements fully, not last weekend, Frawley, Blade and others given plenty of time to show their metal, and it worked, May not come off every time, but replacing a player with 2 or 3 mins to go is asking a bit much.

    • @FinbarrAherne
      @FinbarrAherne 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Couldn't agree more. For the last 3 world cups, Ireland have kept playing the same starting 15 with the replacements rarely getting 15 minutes to make a difference. The teams that win world cups just don't do that, as fatigue from playing the Samoa's and Georgia's of the world in the group stages means that your top players fade as they progress to the knockout stages.

    5:47 Boks get 3 free points. Ireland stuffed 3 more possible try chances in that game. The Boks to be fair stuffed one themselves. It was the same in the first game. Ireland Stuffed or denied 2 tries more. Boks just learned that you can’t win games on just penalties and mistakes of others alone.

    This made me wonder if Johnny Sexton's retirement might actually be something that frees ireland of the chains of an immense personality. BOD, ROG, Sexton, now who? Peter O'Mahony for sure but not held on the same level of deity as the previous three. very interesting to now have 2 more than competent 10s

      @@tephisawayrightnow as an Ireland fan I think the issue isn’t that they stay in the team too long it’s more that the gameplan was build specifically around sexton and no other 10 in Ireland was able to recreate what he did so we went to shit when he was off.
      We had zero depth in the backline at the World Cup and as a result the star players were left on for the full 80 mins.

    • @magbrian
      @magbrian 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Farrell started building the gameplan to rely on Sexton less. All of a sudden the Irish forwards were creating their own line breaks with intricate passing... The problem was that they didn't have the faith in a young substitute against NZ in the world cup. Sexton was dead on his feet.
      What we learned since is that both Crowley and Frawley were likely capable of taking the reigns for the last 20-30 mins of the quarter final. What could have been.

    Great breakdown Squidge. As a side bar, I know it happened a while ago, but I was wondering if you could cover some of the results of the Rugby Europe Championship as some big things happened in that tournament. Most notably the performance that Belgium had over that tournament in which they scored an upset victory over Portugal and came so close to advancing to the Grand Finals stage of the competition until losing out on tiebreaker to Romania. On top of that, Spain had a very good tournament as well with Los Leones scoring a third place by beating Romania after losing to Portugal by only three points in the semis. Belgium and Spain's performances provide an interesting story line to follow going into 2027 qualification as both could be dark horses to qualify given the expansion of the tournament.

      As Pollard lines up the PG kick you can hear the ref say he can't hear - I think the TMO was trying to tell him he's a muppet as SFM taps the ball back to McCarthy. TMO's routinely intervene when there are mistakes about who knocked on. Given the circumstances, I can't imagine the TMO missed it, but if the ref ignores him and/or let's things slide for long enough, there's no going back.
