The two best teams in the world met on Saturday, and a gap between them might just have grown. South Africa downing Ireland, proving a point and setting up an incredible second test. So, how did the Boks do it, what did we learn and what can Ireland take from a tough afternoon?
You can find our new second channel at @SquidgeRugby2, with reviews of Scotland v Canada & Wales v Australia this week!

Squidge just needs to announce he will visit South Africa like EggChasers to be added as a footnote to South Africa's constitution 😂. Maybe the upcoming All Blacks tour 🤙
Seriously, this analysis is on another level and the Squidge team should be offered the kind of access EggChasers got for this tour.

Excellent pronunciation of “een” and “twee”
Phew
Caught me off guard😭😭
@@SquidgeRugby I had to rewind because I had no idea what you were saying. Only on the second listen was I like "Oh yes perfect" 😂. Just didn't see it coming.
@@SquidgeRugby Not to mention absolute respect for shouting out the national anthem!!
Eish! No, it was not good, not even close. But it was definitely good enough for someone who, I assume, does not have an Afrikaans speaker on hand to help. In context, it was easy enough to understand.
Hulle weet nie wat Squidge weet nie
Haahhaaaaa
🤣🤣🤣
😂
hahahaha... classic👌🏻
😂
Oh how I've missed you Squidge! *I might be speaking on behalf of every South African watching this
Watched the game live - immediately saw the Tony Brown influence of passing literally everything and virtually no kicking - especially in the first half - however after watching Squidge's analysis I now have a much deeper understanding of how much Brown has already done in adapting the Springboks play - it's going to get very exciting - one man clean out with a back up - releasing two specifically chosen forwards to 'just' be out wide - with both their stats for metres gained, carries and players beaten outrageously improved (as if they weren't already impressive) and with a few tweeks here and there we are heading into another era of domination I believe - that last scrum leading to the penalty try was a thing of beauty - nice last touch...
It seems like it would be too easy to disrupt the attack by killing the ball at source and committing two defenders to the ruck to disrupt the cleanout? It can't be that simple.
From a rugby analysis point of view, no podcast gets even close to this!! Brilliant.
There is a car company called Sandy Munro that tears down new cars to every single nut and bolt and then analyses it. Squidge Rugby is the rugby equivalent of this. You sir, are an unquestionable genius! How do you have such insight? I listen to other channels do their analysis but when I watch your videos it is like the blinkers come off and every nuance makes perfect sense in a whole new enlightened manner. Well done and thank you
Love Sanday ;)
love Sandy Munro!!! spot on
Except he didn't really look at the reffing issues did he.
@@rosscoghlanwhy would he? He's never done that. There are more than enough podcasts out there to moan about the ref. He is more concerned about tactics
the square space cut scene set up is legendary😂😂😭😭
when the springbok pack attempted to build a website got me 😅
Squarespace definitely don’t pay Squidge enough! This was a sponsor section work of art 😁
We have to help him out and make it happen
I was about to go sleep 😅 so happy to see this.... Dankie Squidgy!!!!
Waiting for the “how did Ireland bowl South Africa over” video next Squidge.
Lots of Doris slow-mo’s please
Squidge isn't a fan of Ireland so that video may never emerge.
Wouldn’t hold your breath. And it won’t be as breathlessly full of praise. He’ll call them well coached (code for players not being as good) and machine-like (no creativity) like most pundits who secretly don’t rate Ireland but results won’t let them say it out loud without looking sad.
The word this week was 'system' 😂
@@Dreyno
@@cateym Always some sneaky reason the bang average Irish players keep winning. It’s so unfair 😂
I will never not laugh at Tommy Bowe's face showing up anytime a number is mentioned
Wondered about this. What’s the deal?

Who's here after the second test
As I was about to go to bed I saw this 😶
Squidge is an honorary South African 🇿🇦
Ah now he was singing the bokes praises no need for name calling 😜😂 but in all seriousness can’t wait for this weekend although we last the last game it was a cracker of a game can’t wait for round two ☘️
Have you ever considered making a video like "How Squidge Rugby Watches Rugby" or something like that? Because it's quite frustrating for new fans like me to watch a game, understand the rules but having no idea what to look at to start appreciating the strategy or the finer details.
It's hard to analyse and pick up on all the intricacies and nuance of each teams game plan during the match. It takes a deep level of knowledge and understanding to do so and it's still hard to do live. For a new fan I would recommend try not to watch and follow the ball but to force yourself to look at each teams positioning and shape. You want to try and identify the options the teams are creating at each phase and spot what they may do in the next few phases.
Rugby is a simple enough game that the same things happen every time, carry, tackle, ruck. Instead of watching the ball carrier look at the supporting players and what lines they are running. Instead of watching the initial tackler(s), look at the defensive line and try to spot any gaps and how the defenders are reacting. Instead of watching the ruck, look at the attacking team to see how they are setting up for the next phase and what options are available to them etc.
It not easy and takes time and experience watching each team to identify what they are trying to do and you will still miss a lot without re-watching the match and focusing on specific areas.
@@StevieC89 wow, thanks
@@StevieC89Excellent
the gap between "een en twee"😂😂 fokkin lovvit ou
A lot of people have been complaining about the Boks' clumsiness, which I understand. But it's amazing how well they've adopted a new system in just their second game.
thanks for speaking a bit more slowly, for those of us who arent english first language speakers. these videos kick ass bro
Put the speed on 0.75 (click on the gear icon to see it)
English is my first language and I use the playback slowed down to 0.75 speed. If I need to speed it up x2 I hold the touchscreen on the tablet.

I know you said you weren’t planning on doing the previous video - how yall have been putting out so much content lately, I’ve no idea, but it’s much MUCH appreciated. Thank you both!
Looking forward to the video on the 2nd test 😉
Wouldn't hold my breath. He's not a fan of Ireland.
"So how did South Africa bowl over Ireland?" Or "Squidge's love letter to Tony Brown"
That ad placement lol. Skipping through is risky. Well played.
Ai, wou nou gaan slaap...
I think the Boks were still very very rusty. It is scary to think how they will do, if they can tighten their defense under Flannery and find a nice balance between their conservative and attacking game.
Top notch video. All your work is. Your videos are those types where I am.pausing constantly reading all your comments...
Awesome work
great video Squidge! Except for this moment 🤣🤣 9:30 Ox is absolutely not off his feet, and Doris comes in from the side and sticks hands into the ruck hahaha clear as day
Fantastic analysis👌🏾Big things coming your way man
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was at that game and it was so hard to put what I was seeing into words. You have done that, and more, with your unparalleled analysis.
Unreal analysis, great work mate!
I loved this. Thank you for making this
If this incredible match proved the Boks are the number 1 side in the world (not that it needed proving, I think that's just another narrative Rassie and the SA media concocted), I can't help but feel it also proved what an outstanding side Ireland are. With all the narratives, altitude, emotional atmosphere, pressure, playing without 2 of its most important players in Keenan and JGP, Ireland still managed to keep the double world champions to 7 points and had two tries disallowed.
This weekend it will be different, Ireland just have way too many injuries now to be able to compete. I say Boks by 15 in another incredible match between two excellent worthy sides.
Hmmmm
Dankie Boet! Lekker video as always.
Great analysis- learnt a lot about modern rugby!
Squidge's analysis is amazing .. surely a national coaching team could use his services
Chile has acknowledged they use his analysis.
Sorry, there's a Northampton Saints Monopoly?
This comment wins! Legendary attention to detail! 🍾🎉
I have never gone back to look for the ad that I skipped through, after reading the comments. I don't know what is more genius: the always superb analysis or getting me to hunt for the advert.
Apropos of nothing, the sentence, "The *yardage* on his average carry went up by 2 *metres* ," is just peak UK imperial-metric mishmash. Part of what I love about listening to rugby commentary (being from the US) is hearing all the different ways that Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish, NZ, Aussie, and Saffa English-speakers describe sport(s) with their own accents/dialects/idioms/slang/cultural reference points while at their most excited!
The "grappled a Koch" joke was perfection
Thanks dudes! You guys are like the Brian Cox and Roger Penrose of rugby! Your pitch is their fabric of space and their star and planet formation creating the mass that influences the curvature of space-time where Galaxies colide in an expanding universe. THIS is how you see the players influence the space with their mass and speed on the field in this ever expending game of RUGBY! Genius
Thank you that was brilliant! I learned so much! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
Brilliant this ! Always love some game analysis
Another beautifully considered and balanced piece of rugby journalism. Thank you Squidge!
Your content is good lately. Good job guys
Ireland's going to have a really tough time of it with all the injuries they sustained in this game. Missing Dan Sheehan and Craig Casey, your current starting hooker and scrum half is going to be a kick in the balls.
Wonder why there injured
Rugby is a physical game? Or do you subscribe to the theory that "He knows him for heaven's sake!"?
@@fin4196not suited to Rugby? Not suited to tier 1 level Rugby? Just weak pasty rent boys who always have an excuse?
Not to mention SA won the World Cup without 2 of their starting hookers
@@fin4196 a completely obvious foul play by RG Snyman
Squidge, your videos are exceptional man.
Thanks for Scquarspace !
brilliant as usual!
Damn you Squidge, now I'm going to have to re-watch this game to fully appreciate it.
Great analysis
I dunno. I mean yeah i guess they played well. Maybe the score flattered Ireland but you can tell that Andy farrell gave his team a severe bollocking after that match.
Be very interesting to see how saturday goes.
It was very interesting 😏
I would argue that South Africas style means that, even when they are completely dominant, they never completely put good teams away on the score board. If NZ was that dominant against an opponent they score 4 more tries and win by 30+ points. It's not necessarily an issue (who cares if you win by 1 every game if you win every game?) but it is a constant for them.
Possibly that is why Brown has been brought in.
A win is by how many points ? Last time I checked one point is a win , sometimes against physical sides it is better to just win than sustain injuries . Lets take the worlds greatest side playing the current 2nd best side on rankings , how much is a win ? New zealand love to score high but sometimes that strains energy levels gives injuries and possibly even cards or sightings , it also telegraphs their plays and tactics that guys like squidge and most professional teams can observe and learn from .
The SA style was developed as a response to the referee interference in the 2011 RWC quarter final. It removes the risk of a ref being able to blow you out of the game. Frnkly with the new style it lets the "hitman" refs back in the door.
You always get me with the out-of-nowhere references to Squarespace 😄
The stadium announcer declaring “the South African national anthem will be sung by… YOU!.” Sure did put a smile on my face that fine Saturday afternoon.
Baie dankie (pronounced "buy a donkey", meaning thank you) Squidge! Lekker interpretation of last week's match 😁
